The Kingsman movies are directed by Mathew Vaughn and when the first one dropped in 2014 it was seen as a breathe of fresh air for the action/spy genre, as well as a very unique comic book movie. It laid the groundwork for a new spy franchise to be explored and expanded upon. But now after three entries it's become mostly a mixed bag for fans, with many moving on entirely. But a 4th installment is still happening called Kingsman Blue Blood, so I wanted to take another look back all the current three films to give my thoughts on each one. Then explain why the series lost hype and fans.

The biggest flaw about the Golden Circle is Harry being alive again. I love his character, but his death in the first movie was well-executed. Bringing him back jumps the shark even by this film’s standards but also undermines the tragedy of the first film.

My biggest problem for me with the second movie is that the device used to revive people with bullets in the head took away any kind of tension. Harry’s death ultimately meant nothing since he’s back and anyone shot in the head can just come back to life now. That’s really what soured my experience with the second movie. The prequel looked interesting since the device would not be in the movie, but the movie ended up having an identity crisis, because it couldn’t decide if it should lean more towards WW1 drama or kingsmen shit. That’s just me tho, but I do agree that the movies can still be fun even with its flaws, but I can’t say they’re that good of movies.

For me, The Golden Circle ruined pretty much any chance of this franchise growing into the potential the first one set it up to have. Like you I have no complaints of the first one, but the second film begins with the entire Kingsman organisation being completely destroyed, as well as bringing Harry back to life which takes away from his death in the first film. Plot devices that bring characters back to life rarely ever work for me, especially when introduced last minute and the Kingsman organisation being destroyed is something that honestly should have been saved for a later movie rather than a direct sequel due to how devastating it is.

Loved loved loved the first two, couldn't even get through the third one. Very excited for Blue Bloods and the focus back on Harry and Eggsy. Matthew Vaugn has said in an interview that the focus will be on their relationship...that something is going to happen between them that will "piss off a certain type of fan" and that they're either going to fall in love with each other or never speak to each other again. My guess? Vaughn is going to fridge Tilde in some accident where Harry is put into an impossible situation of either saving her life or some other action critical to a mission and chooses not to, therefore causing a rift in his relationship with Eggsy, and then the two are going to have to relearn how to work with each other while saving the world.

You lose something original when you link your written characters and stories to something that really happen.

It's also a tricky line to walk when incorporating "controversial" (aka terrible and horrific) historical figures and/or historical events and making sure you're not glorifying them or their horrible actions (hitler, jeffrey dahmer etc.) because the last thing you want is to end up looking like an idiot who supports them or encouraging others to.

I felt the contrary - it showed, that the kingsmen and kingswomen actually were the maids, clerks, servants of all countries, working together, doing their job to ensure peace, despite the madness created by the people wielding the power, aristocrats and crazy men. The reveal that the son wasn't even the main protagonist, but just cannon fodder like any other young person in any war, b my opinion showed, that the dividing line is not between the classes but between the morally upright, the peace-loving, the upstanding - regardless of background - and those working against that.

I thought the 3rd was by far the best. The Trench Knife scene was the best fight scene of them all. And Rasputin using the "Cossack Dance" as his fighting style. It was a prequel in a far less technologically advanced time. Ingenuity and Industriousness and Resolve were their greatest weapons.

  • @itszaque5031

The first movie was so well done, I really only had a couple minor complaints. The second one definitely had more issues, it feels like they got wrapped up trying to improve on what was already a solid formula which ultimately made it worse (though it was still fun). By the third movie these issues were really compounded, I thought the surprise villain was fun but they had so many pacing changes getting there that it was hard to stay engaged. I really liked the father/son dynamic but again they surprised us by removing that halfway through the film and it didn’t feel fully explored. Hopefully we get more Kingsman in the future as I don’t think the franchise is a bust, but the biggest lesson I think filmmakers should take away is that sometimes you don’t have to reinvent the wheel with each film. The original bond movies these are based on are a great example, no bond movie felt a need to go “bigger” or change genres. The same is true for the marvel franchise. It’s fair to critique these and say their villains all feel the same and the plots are similar, but at the end of the day they work at entertaining, which is the primary purpose of movies.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I actually like the 3rd film more than the 2nd. Plots and motivations seemed a bit less convoluted. Plus the film managed to flip to a more grounded story without losing comedic moments and big action set pieces, so it didn’t really lose what makes Kingsman Kingsman in my books.
Also like to point out WW1 is a far too underutilized era for movies and games, which is strange because warfare as people knew it then quite literally changed before their eyes and went to a scale never before seen

Tbh, I liked all 3 Kingsman movies. I dont get making trilogies following the same character cause most seem forced unless you have a good story, ie John Wick and Fast Furious. Even the Mission Impossible movies are boring without the action sequences.
The second movie gave context of d8fferent International organizations working together, while the 3rd gave an origin story.
I feel the Kingsman franchise didnt get the Studio backing other movies had such as MCU and aforementioned movies. Hopefully with the pandemic over we can see more such as a WW2 / cold war and Egsy rebuilding / training future Kingsman with the help of Roxy. Maybe have more characters such as the 3rd movie with the butler and maid. Each character can have a specialisation instead of being a master of all. Kinda like GI Joe. Each bringing their own over the top gadgets and personalities. The whole Egsy and wife story doesnt work cause she will always be clueless on what he really does.

I am not into spy movies in general but I like the series. The trend seems to be correct with the first one being the best one and the others falling a bit behind. Would love to see the next one as one drawn out fight, lasting the whole movie, being basically just one long ass day in the field filled with improvised weapons and lots of blood. Think in the lines of a church scene but 2 hours long... That would be a dream come through. Something like The Birdman with grenades ;)

    @marsredacted7188 Před rokem +2

i basically just watch kingsman movies for the fight scenes because holy shit they're so good. the first two especially really lean into doing this very campy violence and i fucking love it
my gripe with the franchise is just. the story. it's not like it has to be deep at all, it's a silly spy movie series. the secret service was fairly straightforward and had some really fun takes on spy movie tropes and a good cast of characters, and i felt like in killing the alive cast and reviving the dead cast the golden circle kind of took everything that made the plot of the secret service good and threw it away. what i would've wanted from a sequel was a deeper exploration of the kingsman agency- if they were going to introduce more characters i would've preferred they give percival and a new arthur places in the story as opposed to introducing an entirely new spy agency, and also focusing a little more on roxy. taking them all out in the first 10 or so minutes of the film just closed off such a great avenue for exploring the world the franchise built more so it ruined basically the entire story for me going forward
the king's man story was also not good imo. fight scenes stellar as usual and honestly i'm surprised the final sword duel doesn't get more attention because i think there were some really creative shots in it, but the story was slow to begin and i think it couldn't really decide what kind of movie it wanted to be what with it trying to juggle the war story with in some sense the legacy of the kingsman franchise up to this point. i'll be honest i hated everything about rasputin except the fight scene, i think it was supposed to be funny but most of it didn't land imo. and what was up with that random kiss scene after conrad dies. it came out of nowhere and immediately retreated back into nowhere, because there was never any buildup about it and then it never got brought up again. ???????????? i do think the conflict between oxford and conrad was all right, it just felt out of place for a kingsman movie and because it only became a proper spy agency plot in the third act to me it just didn't really feel like a kingsman movie.
finally this isn't really a commentary on anything worthwhile; the king's man introduced what i think is a really compelling alternate idea for a spy agency and i think it'd be cool to explore in another non-kingsman universe. tell me a spy ring comprised of domestic workers in the powerful households across the world wouldn't be cool as fuck

I think one of the reasons that kingsman 3 didnt have a big box office income could be that in alot of places in the world during that time cinemas where actualy closed atleast here in the netherlands the where so the movie never played in the theaters at all here and could only be seen via disney plus

  • @analogicaleuphimism2078

My problem with the 3rd movie is the lack of special devices.
Imagine if the son was a smart inventor type, creating all sorts of tools from his toys and household items from a young age, then he carried his skills into adulthood and created the prototype versions of the modern Kingsman items. It could explain how they're so great at concealing weapons into mundane items like the umbrella shield or the watch. As well as other devices to fit the setting.
Instead of they're spy network utilising only maids and butlers, they could've also used a primitive bugging device that was invented by the mother, explaining who the son gets it from too.
The biggest invention in the made a deal about in the movie was the parachute and the precursor blade shoes.

It needed a charismatic young hero, it needed a better setting than the most unnecessary world war in history, it needed a better villain, it needed a better story... what else...
The Rasputin fight should have been the climax, the "but you were my friend" reveal should have been halfway, it needed better agents than "well, you're working for me already so good thing you're capable somehow"... is there more? Oh right, the ending bit on the plateau SUCKED, from getting on, to staying on and not to forget being on in the first place.

It was supposed to be eggsys show at the end of the first one. He was supposed to be on his own now that Harry's gone, along with the organization's setbacks, but eggsy courageously goes on another mission to honor the memory of his mentor. But no they just had to straight up destroy the Kingsman organization, had to bring back Harry. I hate that the spy genre has devolved into their protagonist becoming "rogue spies" outside of all jurisdiction, and how the antagonist has to have a personal vendetta against the spy and/or their organization right from the start. The movies were never about that before, it was about an agent going on an adventure, outwitting his overwhelmingly well resourced opponents and the women who try to resist his charms.
On a personal note, I really hate how they killed Roxy, she would have been great as an ongoing Pepper Potts kind of thing where they have a friendly rivalry, but MIGHT have something more, yet it is hard to tell considering the 'perks' of some of the assignments, etc.

They didn't need Harry coming back to hint at Whiskey turning traitor. All it meant was that they didn't have faith in Taron Egerton being able to bring get tickets rolling or fit to scene with someone like Pascal on his own.

tf I didn't know that a third movie was out, though I'm not surprised that there's one that flew under my radar, it honestly looks good. The second Kingsman was indeed to wacky and tried too many things at once, then this prequel looks like it overcompensated for that lol. Though personally, just from this review and trailer clips, I think it's a fitting installation for the franchise. It's not the wacky adventures of the modern Kingsman with Egsy, it's a prequel set in the past so even the shift in tone is understandable. If they were to do that tonal shift with Egsy, then that might be an issue, but it's a new set of characters. For people that has gotten interested with the Kingsman lore, this prequel seems to be a great installation without turning it into a flashback infodump episode.
