How Kingsman Pulled Off One Of The CRAZIEST Fight Scenes In History

- The Kingsman: Secret Service blew audiences away with its modern approach to the James Bond era of spy thrillers. One scene in particular though stuck with movie goers long after the credits rolled. The famous Church Brawl in The Kingsman is a perfect example of how the perfect director, editor, cinematographer, stunt coordinator, and music direction, can take a fight sequence to a place we've never seen before.

Kingsman even took the time to have a dialog between 2 characters about the classic 007 movies, one talked about how the modern ones are "too serious" and that a villain with a crazy plot is more enjoyable
SPECTRE
Well, I can tell you in my honest opinion.
I'm getting tired of villains like Thanos, for example, who sees himself as the hero of the story and complicated plots.
Where is the villain who is evil by evil, who steals the baby's candy and laughs like a maniac? Oh, kidnap the girl (or the man if you can enjoy that kind of story) from the hero and tie her up on the train rails.
Today's movies need to bring in the villains who do simple things to have variety, otherwise everything ends up being the same story with a twist there or there.
@@joxerd "You see, I'm a guy of simple taste. I enjoy dynamite, and gunpowder, and gasoline! And do you know what they all have in common? They're cheap."
The newer ones are more faithful.
So...heath ledger was our last great villain?
The way Harry used literally everything at his disposal is also a nice detail for them to add because it tells the viewer that this man is really trained killing people, and he is trained to do it with anything he has at his disposal. Bravo
the part where he field stripped a gun and used it to stab a dude was fucking awesome lol

Fun fact: This scene was actually added to the movie after Colin decided to kill everyone and they were already rolling.
Turns out George was filming the whole time
I really respect when actors go the extra mile to get into character!
It's a secret tool Hollywood uses to not pay extras for their performances.
Bruh 🤣🤣🤣
Colin is an method actor for a reason.
"controlled chaos", the most underrated aspect of action movies, especially in scenes like these.
Fury Road nailes it.
Underrated
I remember i watched this movie in the cinema when i was in high school and was so confused why Harry suddenly came out of the church bloody. Then I watched the movie again on Blu Ray and was shocked to see this scene. Turns out this scene was cut because it was deemed 'too violent' and had to be cut out in my country, sad I couldn't see it in the big screen.
Country?
cringe European
Lol
I'm guessing Indonesia, Vietnam, or Argentina.
Damn, that's pinacle of bad luck.
By far one of my favorite fight scenes from a sheer cinematography stand point
Brilliant
The cut covers are beautiful
shares the first place with original old boy corridor fight for me.
I think I enjoy the long fightscene during the demonstration from Atomic Blonde a bit more. The way she is just giving it her all and is completely at the end of it all when the scene ends is just marvelously done.
This scene pretty much made kings man what it is today
Agree
"Manners maketh man" was a tad more memorable for me, but this is a close second..
@@aravindvissamsetty yeah true
@@aravindvissamsetty this scene works BECAUSE of that! The juxtaposition between "manners maketh man" and this pure, unbridled rage, and the fact that it comes not from a "hero vs villain" comparison, but from the very same character is amazing.
@@aravindvissamsetty so you forgot that he is a "good guy" and he normally doesnt go berzerk on "innocents"?
This fight toes the line between fun and disturbing. I spend the whole time smiling and wincing
Same when I first watched it
Yeah it's almost comical and the music just adds to that
@@levifontaine8186free bird was an insane choice for this scene, I usually hate it when movies use an old classic to manipulate the viewers but the guitar solo works extremely well for this scene and I wouldn't want it any other way
The one thing you forgot was the context of the szene in the movie. Putting the mentor of the hero into an almost impossible to survive situation, then giving us hope by allowing him to put all stops to fight out of that situation just for him to be shot right afterwards is an emotional rollercoaster. And it allows us to empaphice even more with Eggsy when he reacts to the death of Harry.
Just imagine Harry standing somewhere being randomly shot. I honestly don't even think the movie would work that way.
it gives mixed feelings. on one hand, we see one of our protaganists hold his own in this hell, and as you say it gives us hope. yet we arent sure whether we want the harry that comes out of that massacre, after all that killing and fall from grace, and we also arent sure whether harry would actually live with himself after committing those atrocious acts
Fights are more often directed by the 2nd Unit Director, who in this case was the AMAZING Bradley James Allan (former member of the Jackie Chan Stunt Team). I'm a long time fan of this channel, but it's disappointing to not see Allan come up given that he passed away less than a month ago. He was one of the greatest fight choreographers and action designers of the last 20 years, and was heavily involved in this scene. He worked on every Kingsman movie including the upcoming The King's Man.
RIP to one of the all time greats.
I did know he worked this movie, his scenes in gorgeous are legendary
Now knowing this, it makes so much sense. I always thought this scene has some Jackie Chan influence.
This scene is also amazing thanks to the dedication of Colin Firth, who accepted to do all his stunts himself (something really rare in the industry) and trained for weeks to be able to interpret the choreography perfectly. This allowed the director to follow him constantly without needing to use tricks to hide the stuntman’s face, thus adding to the emotional and physical impact of the scene.
Watching Kingsman, my dad comes in and asks what I'm watching, I tell him it's one of my favorite movies, he joins me in watching, this scene comes on, and he wonders what's wrong with his daughter.
Like… “Holy crap, how is she not traumatized?! What drew her to this movie?!” kind of upset?
Kingsman is no joke my comfort movie and I’m barely old enough to legally own this account
That is a really low treshold for wondering that. The news is more chocking every day. Wonder how he'd react to the ending of Hereditary or some of the diner scenes in Twin Peaks. Or what about the 12 minute ininterupted graphic rape scene in Irreversible. Kingsman is not a groundbreaking movie or shocking. The violence is, as the narrator says, hyperviolence which removes the shock value as it is immediately identified as theatrical.

"A gigantic dude in a purple suit would look ridiculous on screen."
*Celestial in the final trailer for The Eternals*
It's ironic that a giant guy in a purple suit is considered ridiculous but not the mofo who literally looks like silver...surfing in the air...on a silver surf board.
Maybe ... but also True!
Too much effort toward the wrong things. Directors need to put more time building characters and less time worrying about their suit. The guy behind the silly looking suit is more important.
The fact that we'll probably never see the uncut version of this scene breaks my heart
In the UK you can buy the director's cut of the film. It has the full uncut version of this scene.

The type of shaky cam they employ reminds me of the shakes I usually get when my adrenaline spikes.
And the shaking itself is more subtle than other films'.

@@k3v1n73 i believe tyler
This guy to me sounds more pro. Just my opinion.
The great thing about what they do as opposed to fight scenes in other action movies at the time is it has a focus point. Theres so much chaos going on around them but the camera always moves with the person its focused on so you can see exactly whats going on with them instead of like you said with the Bourne scene where it looks like they’re fighting in an earthquake which is kinda nauseating and makes it incredibly difficult to see whats going on
I remember the first time I saw this movie. I was on a first date, and there wasn't anything else to see, and he wanted to see this. I don't like James Bond movies and figured it'd be another one of those, but I said okay. I was so in awe of this movie. It was so good and funny and tongue-in-cheek. I loved it, and I went to see it multiple times in theaters. The guy actually didn't like it in the end, and I absolutely cannot understand how that was possible.
I watched it at my buddy’s house and didn’t think I’d like it either since I wasn’t crazy over James Bond but my buddies told me it gets better and it did. I was so hooked. I’ve watched this movie a few x already and with my current bf he loves James Bond so I’m so excited to show him this cause he hasn’t seen it yet
Lmfao reminds me when I took my ex to see once upon a time in Hollywood and she hated it 🤣
I also really loved the build up to this scene! Harry's line with the hail satan, the woman screaming at him, and the pastor spouting awful things added to the impact of the scene, really making the whole thing very cathartic and satisfying.
What makes the shakeycam work in this movie is that it doesn't hide any of the action. There is no blurring or elements out of shot or even focus which would make the scene look not so nice. And this is possible because they didn't physically shake the camera, they kept the camera movements as smooth as possible and added in the shake during post.
This is one thing I love about being alive in this era. A hyper violent action scene can exist, be as bloody as the director wants, and can be executed so perfectly that it’s dissected online and admired for its art.
Meanwhile early in film history showing a thigh was suggestive. And psycho was “shocking “.
It definitely was shocking for the time, don't get it twisted, it's cause of movies like psycho we can even have kingsmen, I dislike jerking off old stuff just cause its classic (Seinfeld) as much as the next guy but it still deserves credit right? For example I don't like slayer or iron maiden but I have to give them credit for helping create the metal I like today
It was planned and performed amazingly. The best scene in the entire movie.
This scene also sets up the stakes for the climax. The long shot of the beach wouldn't work if we didn't have this close-up scene. While the climax featured everyday locations, this scene shows us a church, which should be thought of as safe and peaceful in body, violent chaos. By doing so, we really feel that it could happen anywhere.
It was also brilliant to show us a racist church, so we have no sympathy for the everyday people getting killed in incredibly gruesome ways. Our focus remains on Harry and we have the cognitive dissonance of knowing this is wrong, but also accepting they are bad people getting what "they deserve."
Like the characters affected, you find yourself enjoying the violence and maybe even cheering the deaths on, only to later realize how horrific it is.
I wouldnt say i accepted their deaths well just because they were racist lmao
@@exploman6382 the point isn't just that they're racist, the point is the degree to which they're racist and horrible human beings, which is shown prior to the fight breakout. That being said, I would still accept their deaths just because they were racist.

i like the fact that there is a short time in the middle where harry seems to come to his senses in the middle of the fight. right after the grenade goes off he loses hearing for a few seconds and can't hear the signal and his expression is amazing.
Kingsman was defintely a sleeper hit. Absolutely loved it watching it in theaters.
This scene was a cinematic masterpiece. I was actually convinced that it is a one take
Absolutely can not think of a more badass movie scene that kept me glued to my tv screen every time I've ever seen it.
I would love to do some fantastic editing like that one day! So seamless, so beautiful, so magnificent!
The entirety of Fury Road.
Shaky cam, when used correctly can bring a lot to a scene. It's nauseating watching it nowadays however. Directors use it in tight spaces with the camera zoomed right in, or when the actor is just walking along. It should he used sparingly.
From a cinematography viewpoint, notice also the quick exposure. When there's fast movement, it doesn't give you the motion blur of cinema photography and it's difficult to describe it's effect, but it's there.
I know what you mean. It gives it a high energy kinetic feel. The opposite is done with strong motion blur to create a dreamy hallucinating feel
You can see it also in a lot of war movies--Saving Private Ryan, Blackhawk Down--anywhere there is exploding sand. It looks like you can count the grains of sand individually. Instead of a brown cloud, you get to feel that texture as it rains down.
@@robot_spider I can imagine, it creates frantic action, but it's not cinematic.
@@FatNorthernBigot Are you referring to the 'shaky cam'? Or the quick-cuts? I was referring to the quick exposure you mentioned--I assumed you meant the shutter speed/exposure of the film (plate, sensor, whatever). Lets you better see the detail in each frame. I think it is beautifully cinematic, used in the right shots.
@@robot_spider the fast exposure in a bizarrely low frame rate that removes the motion blur, but makes the action look a bit choppy.
Love how they set up the pub scene's too, 'Manners maketh man.' Along with the actions of locking the doors, echoing Rorschach's words in the prison fight scene, "None of you understand. I'm not locked up in here with you. You're locked up in here with me."
something i never noticed watching this movie.
at 8:07 the two people fighting in front of the pulpit that harry pins his victim to weren't there at first. you can see, in the moment harry's victim passes over the camera, they're suddenly there, even though they weren't before the victim passed over the camera.
Wow, we need the 7 minute cut of that scene. Also great video, as always.
Yes that is one crazy memorable scene I put it up there with that large gang fight at the beginning of the movie Gangs of New York.

The part of that scene I remember most vividly was some guy getting fish hooked so hard it starts to tear his cheek away from his face.

A great analysis and another brilliant video. Keep up the good work!
Awesome analysis as always! Such a great scene and so well executed!
Literally my favorite action scene and action movie of all time it’s just so AWESOME
This scene is actually what made me watch Kingsman in the first place -- I've seen a showcase in another video and decided I just have to watch a movie with such perfectly executed fight scenes. XD
This fight scene encapsulated everything I've wanted to see in a fight scene, it's beautiful
this scene is a master class on why creating a scene with editor, music, stunt and performers all involved in the preproduction is so important
That reference to The Mist was S-class. That ending made the whole movie.
This is the greatest and most brutal fight scene I have ever seen in a film. Love it!
Great information, really enjoyed it!!
I actually watched this film for the first time at a stunt performer training program. We were working on fight choreo the first two weeks, and at some point a bunch of us decided to have a movie night together and watch this. I remember during this scene we were just FLOORED. We’d been trying to memorize and execute fights about a minute in length between two or three people, and then there’s this extended, multi-person sequence of brilliant choreography with so much precision and such creative choices. We were Al just like “HOW????????”
Phenomenal work - outstanding. I wish I could have been there to watch!
Absolutely phenomenal scene. Easily the highlight of an excellent moment.
editor of this did such a great job. i've been 100% sure they some how pulled it off in one take without cuts. even when i watched it back looking for cuts there's nothing that stands out to me as "well, THAT'S where the cut was.". even after being told by this video, i can't notice any cuts.
I rather enjoyed some of the attention to detail in this. Specifically, they didn't fall into the action movie trope of having weapons with unlimited ammunition. Every weapon he used had only ten or eleven shots before needing to be reloaded. They kept that consistent throughout the scene, even when he grabbed someone else's gun.
Hands down one of my favourite scenes, also the bar fight after the classic “Manners Maketh Man”. Love Kingsman!
I’m so proud to say it was filmed right next to my house
One of my favourite scenes in cinema history
Bro I freaking love this scene it's so iconic!
This scene is so incredible; I remember sitting in the theater absolutely gobsmacked and audibly saying 'wow, holy shit' and then sitting in awe at the completion...then being flabbergasted as I looked around to see the non existent reactions of others in the audience. This movie is an absolute gem and will be a favorite for the rest of my time.
Saw this in theaters when it first came out. The entire audience in the theater was Silent in that quiet part right after the scene when someone yelled out "Hallelujah!". It's my favorite theater memory ever XD
You literally don't ever forget this scene after seeing it for the first time, it just stuns you into a 4 min trance of violence and mayhem!
This was mind blowing watching it first on the big screen. It's still amazing.
And the free bird solo adds the final touch 🔥
i genuinely think that the editor for this should've been nominated for an oscar
Such a great movie. I only just recently watched all three and I was blown away at just how entertaining it was. A sheer joy to watch.
This scene was very ahead of its time. Loved it the first time I saw it. This was before The Raid, before John Wick, before Daredevil. It set the bar very high on action choreography for me going forward.
and something else people don't notice. Harry holds his composure far better than the others under the influence of the sim card's effects, and only starts killing when it's turned to max. Then, when the explosion happens partway through, he's temporarily deafened and somewhat regains his composure.
I have watched The Kingsman twice, but the church scene over 50 times. Every single time is mindblowing perfect.
This is one of the best scenes I've seen in my whole life

this fight scene and the prision fight scene from the raid 2 are the ones that blew my mind more than any other fight scene till this day
This is one of the best fight scenes I have ever seen in a movie. It reminds me of the over-the-top fights and movies in general, like the old west bar fights, Etc. I can't get enough of this movie scene. it seems seamless and one take. It's one of the scenes that will go down in movie history. Whenever you look up epic fight scenes, this is one of them. I don't think I would have remembered The Kingsmen without the church Massacre scene. People went to see this movie for the ultra-violent death that this scene produced. I am willing to bet, this church scene was also the most expensive scene to film for the entire movie. Looking back, I would have loved to have had the 7 minutes of violence in here.
You barely even acknowledged Free Bird, arguably the greatest song of all time. The slow consistent build until the dramatic "turning up to 11" (they literally turn the dial on the sim card machine all the way up) the snap into the riff of the song and the snap into the riff of violence is beautifully synchronised.
I dont have the words to emphasise how much of a perfect fit the song is.
