Did Bumblebee Save The Transformers Franchise?

  • For many fans of the Transformers, the franchise has been headed in a downward spiral for years and years. With each new chapter from Michael Bay the Transformers franchise has just become a mangled mess of explosions and shaky camera work. Until 2018 when the studio opted for a soft reboot of the series with a stand alone Bumblebee movie. Taking Transformers back to square one has been the best thing to keep the series from completely bottoming out.

    Something subtle they did with this movie that I really enjoy is scale the transformers more realistically. Bumblebee is about the size of a robot that would transform into a vw beetle while he's dense in robot mode and 80% air in vehicle mode.
    Also, the triple changers are bigger in robot mode so they can turn into bigger aircraft. But their car modes are smaller. So they blacked out their windows and never showed anyone riding in them. Makes it easier to believe you could fit a giant robot in a little car when they don't need to make room for people.
    Subtle, but effective at making a believable transformer.
    Hopefully they keep it going in later films, but I won't be mad if they don't. Just glad they did it here.

      @christianc.christian5025 Před 2 lety +21

      I’m not even hyper-picky about them making certain robots a certain size based on what they transform into, I just want them to remain consistent on a couple of basic ideas.
      The Decepticons were very animalistic/monster-like, so Megatron makes sense as their leader because he’s the largest, hence the strongest… but then, we get Grindor, Shockwave, some of the Constructicons, etc.
      Which is fine, but then they couldn’t even keep track of how *many* Constructicons there were… It originally seemed like there were about 8 only then, you notice that there are about 3 different copies of each of those 8. I don’t think Shockwave ever actually interacts with Megatron. So, you don’t even see if his massive size and power are a threat to Megatron’s authority.
      Which is funny because in the thrown together video game prequel (which is almost definitely not canonical) Megatron seems very hesitant to resort to having to work with Shockwave, given how dangerous he is.
      Basically, a 7-level, hastily made video game was better thought out than Michael Bay’s nonsense.

      they'd have to get rid of the "human" aspect of the story (which I think is a stupid argument, you can "humanize" the struggle for cybertron and make character studies of the transformer characters). I think the civil war is interesting enough, but there's a lot of legwork to make the autobots and deciptcons interesting for casual viewers. They could pull the class struggle story. Easily doable with Mirage's character since he was from a well to do family before the war and cares less about whole civil war and cares more about returning back to a life of normalcy. Truly, a centrist POV which could make this whole civil war thing SO much more dynamic and interesting

    I really like the simplified look of the designs as well. Yeah they have the mechanical details, wires, pistons etc. that make them more realistic. But toning them down was a big step over how the Bayverse added tiny details to every single part, making them hard to look at, and hard to pick out where parts on the face or body are.

  • @shovelmp4971
    @shovelmp4971 Před 2 lety +27

    Another thing worth mentioning: the decepticons, if anyone has seen the animated series from G1 to prime to cyberverse, you would know how much character EVERYONE has, decepticons included. It made them different because people didn't see it as a story of good battling evil but two sides battling for their own morals.
    We can see that the characters especially decepticons were butchered in Bayverse, every singhle decepticon was silver/chromeish and all looked the same, the reboot version however seemed to add more character to them and lets it stays that way.

    I love this movie exactly as much as I disliked the Bayformers, that it to say, a whole lot! It stands with Detective Pikachu and the Sonic the Hedgehog movie as fantastic, fun, colourful events that are far, far better than they probably deserve to be. John Cena's character was supposed to be the stereotypical bad guy, even getting the bad guy facial scar linked to Bumblebee, but he's such a nice, charismatic guy, and such a pleasure to work with, that's they rewrote his arc so he redeems himself by the ending.
    My worry with movie like the three I mention earlier is that perhaps the studio expected nothing of them initially, and let the director and writer and extended team the freedom to do as they wanted without too much studio executive involvement. But sequels will be pressured in to adding this thing or that thing, because focus groups say it's "hot" right now. It seems to happen too often (see Wonder Woman).

I still enjoy the movie and respect it for showing restraint characters wise but the cybertron scene definitely stole the show; which is why currently we're getting a bunch of toys of characters that appeared in that scene for 3 seconds and even a CG animated cybertron film now.

    I still feel the original Trilogy is a good group of films. Heck Dark of the Moon (TF3) is still my favourite film of all time. I feel that 4&5 were the ones that started to just take it too far and started the franchise downhill. Because honestly I would suggest that the golden age of transformers was from around 2009-2013. Also, I am getting tired of the “I can’t see what’s going on complaint”. I’ve never understood it. If my 6 year old self could understand what was going on and could see the action fine then I don’t think it was the movies problem. I’m just getting really tired of the cliche hating on the Bayverse. However I do feel like Bumblebee is a proper step in the right direction. I think if we can get a perfect mix of the bay movies and Bumblebee, We can actually get an all around really good and enjoyable film. Not just on a cool action movie level but possibly something even greater. Really hoping that Rise of the Beasts can deliver on that.

      @sashabraus9422 Před 2 lety +6

      Agreed 100%. Especially with the DOTM being my favorite. It's not hard to see what's going on, you just need to pay a minimal amount of attention. I find it ironic that people claim Bayverse is hard to follow yet also complain about how simplistic It can be. I feel like at this point the hate on Bayformers is just there to be there. There's no rhyme or reason other than It's mainstream and people hate it because at this point "why not." All of the real complaints that I've seen aren't prominent at all, like the corny jokes and short moments. I just hope that Transformers won't go down the hole that Star Wars did and make everything the original generation but new. Since while I like G1, I don't want to see the same designs and stories forever y'know?

  • @The_Story_Of_Us
    @The_Story_Of_Us Před 2 lety +2

    impressively enough, this movie actually has a coherent story about trauma that it explores through “the girl and her car” that it develops simultaneously in the main duo. Both hide away from the world due to traumatic events (Charlie’s father’s death and Bumblebee getting separated from his kind, attacked by the military and mutilated by Blitzwing) and through their attachment open back up again and return to their worlds after consecrating their growth by making the difficult yet necessary choice to part ways.
    There a few flaws along the way, but… The other movies never even TRIED to give any of the TITULAR CHARACTERS… a character arc.
    Unless the sub 500 million dollar returns (despite being over a threefold return on investment) cause the studio to stupidly regress, I think we have ourselves a working Transformers series for the first time.

    I've heard they're also making a Cybertron movie too, it should show: who was Megatron before the war; who was Optimus before the war; lower, middle and higher classes; the high council meeting that started it all; Megatron meeting Starscream near the Trypticon station; Optimus gaining the Matrix of Leadership; finish on Transformers entering the Ark.
    So it would be a prequel to Rise of the Beasts or something like that, and that movie would start with the classical Ark scene, that was present in g1 and TFoC.

It was everything I'd been waiting 10 years to see in a Transformers movie.. If that had been all there was to the movie it would have been enough, but that it was part of a genuinely nuanced, resonant story made it hands-down the strongest entry in the franchise. My vote is on Starscream for the next one, which can also feature Jetfire and, of course, Megatron.
