I enjoy you video and work on my corolla after watching with great success!
Ed W. Thanks and You are welcome.
Thanks for the video I have the Toyota Celica GT 2001 and I used your video to check my time chain, it is fantastic to see there is this type of help and information on CZcams. Great quality video very well done!!
Thank You.
it is so good of you to use english when you could so easily use your home language . Thank you so much for the hard work you put in to these videos . You give such good and careful advice . Kind regards from South Africa

Yes Sir. :-)
great job mr I graduate fro school this videos help to do better.tanks
+edwin sandoval Thanks for feedback. :-)
Excellent video, great job
Thanks Sir. Toyota's engine's are like master piece.
When you added the glue could you have added the glue to the indented area on the valve cover instead of the actual motor this was a very good video and i enjoyed the experience
Hi. You are right. You can add glue also to the indented area or actual motor.
thanks pete your videos are awesome
Very good information but for the cost of a gasket I would of changed it not just cleaned because you can bet when you put it back together at some time later it will leak but still a very good video 👍
Thanks for posting!
Thanks, Sir. :-)
Very educational, certainly observing your work build my confidence watching your detailed gentle sequence of procedure were nuts strip and screw stems break which did not happen to you was creating suspense for me as i am impatient with these aluminim parts, extracting can be a living hell, especially if we chose to fix car in the streets. Appreciated the explanation of the Toyota's timing chain metal instead of rubber belt is preferred and the metal chain's strength with care can last 500 thosand miles, if oil is changed regularly. The service, the status of the timing chain identifying the symptom of rattling sound was good awareness, when distinguishing the strange sound an older car may make.Variable value timing principals was missing in your presentation, which i would have loved to hear you speak about in-order to grasp that principal repetition is always necessary as it reviews basic principals, that may reconnect properly in the learning process inside our thinking mind, as we confuse many ideas in our head, that is why sharing knowledge in this forum can enhance our learning and mastery of the car. I have a question for you Peter, what is "over drive," button, what is it used for Mr.? Many thanks, to you sir!
Bob Bishop Hello and Thank You for your comments. I will do also new video: How over drive works and what is it's purpose.
Oh wonderful Mr. Finn, can't wait to see it!
Nice. Worked for 99 toyota too. That 1zz engine is in everything.
Right on!
Nice video! Very helpful :-)
Thanks.
Another fine video on exactly what I sought for my best engineered car ever. I was looking for timing chain info and was pleased to get cover gasket info, mine leaks in the plug areas so I'll try sealant as well. I think it's better to put gasket on cover first, because it usually has a groove which is more important to install properly than the flat engine block. Though some would say to just replace the gasket, I suspect Toyota OEM will be better than the cheap aftermarket stuff I was looking at. A little sealant should be best. Regardless, these vids keep me from having the shop monkeys do it.
Thank You for Your comment. :-)
Yes, I will do that soon. Sorry my delay.
Hi, thanks for the video. before I take the rocker cover off I always steam clean or at least degrease and waterblast the motor first.......then you don't have to wory about sand and dust
Thanks, excellent hint.
Great video, love your accent you remind me of Count Dracula ha haaa on Sesame Street (no offence intended) thanks for a very informative video :)
Haggy58 Thanks. But I am not a Dracula, I am professional engineer. :-)
Bone Head 7:27 hahaha!
iJIMBUG now that was hilarious !
thank you
شكرا لك علي هذا الفديو الرائع
You are welcome.
Very nice, thanks for sharing. Let me know when you can share your skills on adjusting the door. The shift lever gets locked in park and I have to push the little button to release it after starting the car. Do you have any tips on this?
Nice play with engine. My 12 years old 1ZR-FE probably need change a gasket... Maybe in one sunny weekend 🤔
I do not know if you still frequently check the comments but ive had an issue of my 1zzfe jumping time a couple notches and ruining the top end. Would that possibly be due to a stretched timing chain, bad tensioner or something else? I replaced whole top end, but reused old chain and tensioner.
Thank You :) i have a corolla verso 3zz fe and i really was afraid that timing its old . Now i can sleep well :))
You're welcome!
My friend has this engine in his car. It has over 500000 miles, original chain. Head gasket changed once.
Good ! And Thanks.
were the guides every replaced ? Does this engine have plastic guides ?
bobl78, the engine does have plastic valve guides seals, I don't know if they were changed but they are usually fine, it's usually the bottom piston ring that gets stuck and causes oil consumption. 2az-fe
This was the worst lid opening and closing I've ever seen. This model gasket must be placed in the cover groove, and then the cover installed. That silicone that leaked inside the head and the pinched gasket....guys I'm speechless. Otherwise, thanks for the effort to make a video.
Ok 👍
Great job
Hello, and many thanks for your comment. :-)
Thanks Toyota for this very instructive video - However, it struck me that since both the outer camshaft cover gasket and the inner spark plug gasket are clearly meant to be 'seated' in the preformed channels in the cover, then it would have been easier to replace the cover if a narrow bead of silicone gasket sealant had been run into the base of the outer and inner channels before pressing the associated gaskets (after cleaning all mating surfaces of the gasket and cover with the proverbial 'lint free' cloth) into their respective channels. Then once satisfactorily 'seated' another narrow bead of sealant could have been run along the undersides of the two gaskets. The cover would then have gone straight on in a single move with no possibility of any portion of the gasket being trapped or pinched between the cover and the machined faces of the cylinder head.
Hi, Thanks for comment.
Nice video
Hi. Did your check engine light come on?
I little bit hammer this is a cool video
Lee Riley Thanks. Hammer is good tool. :-)
Nice good job
+Mark Ritchie Hello and Thanks Your comment. :-)
I really like your video I need job for this
Stay connected
Is rotating the engine 360 degrees and it matching up still as important as getting the marks right without rotating the crank?
Great video, you should change gasket ,looks and you can hear is hard like a plastic, not rubber
Yes, good comment and Thanks Sir.
You welcome Pete,
Hi, The videos that you downloaded more than wonderful .Is it possible to download a video showing how to change vvt gear 2zr-fe ...... with thanks and appreciation
Hi, Peter, this engine has a little of varnish in the valve cover internals. Would you know the oil change interval and oil brand used on it?
Oil change 7000 miles and oil Mobil 1
Where is the oil leak close to the alternator of a 2004 RAV4 coming from and how to fix it, please and thank you in advance.
Take the gasket off completely, clean it and put it back in the cover with a lil silicone to hold it on since it''s used, the way he did could crush the gasket and not get a good seal, good vid tho ;)
Good comment. 😀👍
good video
kevin kingo Thanks for comment.
Would it have been easier to install the gasket into the cover and then install cover with gasket onto the cylinder head?
+deemdoubleu Yes, if you could install it.
+deemdoubleu ...you right, it should be that way.... install the gasket into the cover at first....
Initial check
that's very good
Thanks !
Great video anf the way you explain it.
The engine noise sounds bad so what was the fix for that?
I have a 2000 yaris 1.0 with a worse noise but i think its the timing chain/tensioner.
It has only 36,000 miles hard to understand why that chain would give toruble.
Do you need gasket seal with a new gasket or just old ones?
If you have the bad noise from timing chain, it is good to check tensioner and timing chain. Maybe replace the tensioner.
And good quality gasket glue works well, but the new gasket is always better choice.
I wish you worked in the Portland Oregon area. I would pay you to work on my Mr2 SPyder. I want to put in a Honda Vtech Engine into my mr2 spyder.
Thank you very much sr, I find your videos very helpful, I'm planning to replace my timing chain soon and this is just great, like & subscribe 👍👍👍
Hi, Thanks for comment. :-)
Thank you for making this video. Very informative! I'm curious about why you keep the head cover gasket facing up? Instead of inserting it in the head cover grooves? I've seen other videos showing inserting the gasket in the cover. Is there any particular reason you do it this way? Thanks
Hello. I reuse my gasket.
Yes but your not inserting the gasket into the cover.. By the way I successfully changed my head gasket!!! Yay!!
So good
Thank You. :-) BR Peter
Instead of using half of the RVT tube, a new cover gasket should be used. New gasket should be installed dry except certain joint areas. It definitly less messy. You will be spending half an hour to clean up the left over mess if you need to fix it again. Read some instruction on the gasket package, please.
+lamdafan Thanks, good info.
and I found I lose cable with a connector lose, this cable comes from under the engine cover is by the first spark plug on your left side do you know where go? thanks!!
Please take video and send link to me.
nice work Mr fin
I have a toyota allion 2007 valve 16 vvt-i engine.
Has the toyota allion a timing belt or timing chain?
Jeteen Amar Krishnasing Hello. There is chain in all engines in Allion 2001-2007.
From your experience, what is the most reliable good engineered engines ,toyota ,ford, hundai. Etc,?
Suliman Alali Toyota is Best. Engineering and materials are super.
I like so much.
+Kyaw Than Soe Thank You very much Your feedback. :-)
Mr Finn, Do you also work on Hyundai's? My grandson needs a 2005 Hyundai timing belt replaced.
Yes, I will do videos in future. Koreans are good Japanish copies
Hi mate I open Toyota. Pruis. 1.8. Head gasket. But intake cam gear move ⚙️. Little. If I put timing chain mark same place it’s gear ⚙️ not Male problem ?
I. Know not all Americans speak English well even if where born in the old usa shame on themselves for criticism keep up good work I like people that think out box
Thanks !
Rumor has it his hummer actually helps with production.
Thanks. 👍
peter can the ignition timing be checked with a timing light and the harmonic balancer mark?
Maybe Yes
+Peter Finn have you ever seen the timing marks on the harmonic balancer?
That sounds for the timing belt area is the water pump; very usual problem in corollas specially 2007-2009 and the cost is cheaper than timing belt, can be ready in two hours, parts and labor can be 400.00
Thanks! :-)
Hi Peter, thanks for the video, I have a 2011 Toyota Corolla at what mileage do you recommend changing the timing chain?
About 400 000 miles
Hey Peter. Would timing chain being slack cause jump in timing and multiple cylinder misfire code?
Yes
the vvti cam gear can be changed with out pulling out the cam correct? I have to replace mine this weekend
wiilam snyder Ok, good work.
Hy Mr Peter, great work you are doing I hope you keep doing it, I have a cuestion I hope you can help, I have a Toyota Matrix 2005 1.8L vvt i 16 v, started to shake on Drive, not in Parking not Driving around not in Neutral, just in Drive shift when I stops , the check light show up with P0016 I already changed both sensors but it stills doing that, what would be the cause? I hope you can help, thanks your friend Yuriy from Mexico.
julio marquez
Hi, I should clean the sensors and check electric cables connections.
Also possible causes
- Dirty Oil
- Faulty Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor
- Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor circuit is open or shorted
- Variable Valve Timing (VVT) sensor poor electrical connection
- Damaged Engine Control Module (ECM)
please help. I just replaced my chain on the 1zz and it restored the power n throttle response. A day later, the power is lagging n i have to double tap the accelerator to get it going... what could be the problem? My electronics like spark plugs n coil plugs are all new - please help
I have a 2011 Camry with 71k miles. At what mileage would you recommend replacing the timing chain? 90k?
Hi, I recommend timing chain replace within about 300 000 miles.
@@garyrush2454 are you sure you are not talking about a timing belt? as far as I know the chain is for the life of the engine...i never replaced any and had a few toyotas with over 200k miles...
Thank you for ur vid ,, any help i have a corolla 2010 1.8 .
It makes a rattle noise olny when cold start ,runs Great tho
Normal sound for older engine. Valve adjusting keep sound small time
Hello sir. Is it possible to change timing chain while engine in the vehicle ? I have the Toyota Runx 2005 1.4rs (4zz engine)
I don't think so
after how many kms you have to change the timing chain
Hi Peter, I have a Corolla 2001 and it burns some oil. Do you think it could be those O rings by the spark plugs or the valve steems of the valves? TIA
Piston oil ring is stuck.
So that means that they need to be replace ?
Yes
If it only does it at start up, it could just be the valve stem seals. I'm hoping that's all it is on my son's car? Figured I would check on weather or not I need to do the timing chain while I'm at it? So I watched this to see how to check if it needs replaced or not. About at 200,000 miles, not sure if it's been changed yet. Most likely not. Oh, I see the question about burning oil was 11 months ago. My response could be too late.
most of them burn oil. especially at this age. keep feeding them oil and they will keep going.
how was the torquer q vc use p tightens the valves cover .Thank
10 NM per bolt
Thanks for this video I want to know where is ambient air tempratur sensor toyota camry2003
it should be the small plug going into the intake tube next to the mass airflow sensor
hi. great video.
i m having problems with my corolla 06 1,4 sedan. when the car is cold (1100) or hot (640) the ralenti works ok but in the meantime ralenti falls ( under 600) and engine turn off. do you have any ideas? thanks
Hi, This is not a easy job, but please check all air leaks in hoses and pipes what are linked to fuel injection system. Also you should check and clean fuel injection air sensors.
Peter Finn well i cleaned maf, iac and pcv valve, throttle boby. also no air leaks. i haven't check oxygen sensors yet.i change the starters. now after 2 weeks the problem is on driving.
if i leave the ralenti without press the pedal and move the car nothing (no turn off) . when i'm driving ralenti falls ( under 600) and engine either turn off or ralenti goes at 650-700.but i can't say that the engine works like a clock.
hi Peter! I have a 2006 corolla 1zzfe engine and every time I start the car the first time in the morning is a noise by the timing chain area, I already change the tensioner and still the same noise, any idea? thanks!!
Your valves clearance needs to be setup. I will do new video.
hi Peter!! thanks for reply!! I take out the valve cover and the timing chain is a little loose you think is the valve clearance?
the noise is jus 1 or 2 seconds when the engine starts
checo282 even ma car runx 2000 the same problem
Also, did you saw the sprockets at vvti? I had a rattle at startup and endup being the exhaust cam sprocket worn out.
Peter, what are your thoughts about this engine vs 4EFE and 4AFE? Which one is more reliable?
Hi, I beat the 4AFE
My 2001 Corolla has only 138,000 miles and my timing chain has play. I replaced the tensioner and still have play in the chain. So much for the reliability of the timiming chain I always here about. At this point I wish I had a belt instead of a chain, much easier to fix than a chain and cheaper. A quote from a mechanic was $700.00.
+LMAO77598 I am sorry, you had a bad luck. I have only good experiences on Toyota timing chains. :-)
+WoodsMan
By 138,000 miles you would have snapped two belts,
more if you are unlucky.
Timing belts are silent killers - they don't tell you when
they ware going to give way. If oil gets onto it from a leaking seal, good luck - they'll snap in no time at all.
never had chain problems on vvti. and had 4 of them over 200 k miles
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor He should try his luck with BMW engines and timing chains. Hahhaha
Peter Finn the Car Doctor
I only had good opinion about Toyota until now -60k miles on Prius and chain has to be changed -throwing engine check pointing car sensor but in fact it’s stretched chain - hard to believe at 60k
I replaced a timing chain and gear on this style engine, ran good before I started, now I lost spark on #2 and #3 cylinders. any advice?
bailer1971 Ok and not a nice thing. Please check again your ignition coil wires and then again the chain position.
Hello Peter! Is the 1ZZFBE (flex fuel) included on this procedure?
Yes
@@PeterFinnTheCarDoctor Thank you Peter
How much of slag is tolerable in a timing chain? I wish you could show pressing down (or up) slightly with your finger in the timming chain to show that tension
Hi, I will do this. New video
hi, please help, i have a toyota corolla 2008 1.6 vvti.. it has a tatling sound when ever press the accelerator... like somethingis breaking.. or diesel kind of noise.. please help what could be causing this
frank makhabane Hello. Your issue is complex and I need to do more investigation.
can you help with an enquiry? my car, which is 2003 a toyota corolla verso 1.6 vvti, was off the road and with a flat battery for 10 months. last week i got it started and road worthy again but i noticed after 1 week the yellow engine light is on even though i have checked everything. the owners manual just says if this happens to go to the toyota dealer. do you know an easier explanation for what is happening? thanks in advance for any advice and thanks also for the upload
Hello. Please try to reset your VVT-i system. Here is video link: czcams.com/video/rohi9UOToKY/video.html
thank you very much for your reply and assistance
I've got a question on a 2013 5.7 Toyota no one I mean no one can answer my question please help
Yes
So does my 2005 Toyota Corolla S have a rubber timing belt or Chain?
GibbyGuyGo Chain
would a timing chain tensioner make the timing chain lose and make a noise inside the car
Yes, common issue in some cars like Nissan and BMW.
Thumbs up
Micro Master Thank You.
I timed my car the other day.it took a long time to get anywhere.
Ok and Thanks Sir.
Very interesting. At what mileage should you need to check the timing chain?
Every 100 000 km or 70 000 miles
Please help me. My 07Yaris has all of the symptoms of timing chain out, how much is too much for a mechanic to fix?
Hi, timing chain replace costs about 1000 USD
These Toyota engines do not require silicone sealer on the valve cover, the rubber seal fits in the recessed groves, this might cause a leak sooner than later; the timing chain cover does require silicone sealer at certain points.
I have a bad VVT-i gear or (two gears total) on my Wife's 09 corolla /
at least one is making noise on cold startup. I know that's the problem,
but i cannot for the life of me find out if I can do this work myself
and save 8-900 bucks. I speculate that the timing chain cover has to be
removed. And maybe i wont have to take the cam shaft off which would be
better.
HI and Thanks.
i would not mess with it ...you cand damage the vvti and it will cost you more...better have the dealer fix it or drive it until it dies and put a new engine...
Merci
You're welcome 👍
good
Thanks for feedback. :-)
It's 10mm on the black cover and the coils
can a timing chain with slack cause a p0171 on these engines?
Hi, the there are possible issues p0171: Mass air flow sensor is dirty or faulty, faulty oxygen sensor, failed fuel injector, low fuel pressure, dirty fuel filter, exhaust leak between engine and first oxygen sensor and leaks in seals and pipes fuel intake area.
Peter, you can learn how to pronounce words by typing them in google and clicking the small speaker button. Tight is pronounced (taait) no (tee ghht). Your effort in making the videos is appreciated.
john21031 Thank You very much for this Great comment. I will improve my pronounce words. Like "taait".
john21031 you are Up tee ghht.......
I have a 2007 toyota matrix xr with 260K miles and my question is should I replace the timing chain or leave it alone?
Leave it alone
well done!! Is it possible to replace timing chain without removing engine
Raymond Suddaby yes
Raymond Suddaby Hello. It is very difficult, but maybe possible.
