    Very educational, certainly observing your work build my confidence watching your detailed gentle sequence of procedure were nuts strip and screw stems break which did not happen to you was creating suspense for me as i am impatient with these aluminim parts, extracting can be a living hell, especially if we chose to fix car in the streets. Appreciated the explanation of the Toyota's timing chain metal instead of rubber belt is preferred and the metal chain's strength with care can last 500 thosand miles, if oil is changed regularly. The service, the status of the timing chain identifying the symptom of rattling sound was good awareness, when distinguishing the strange sound an older car may make.Variable value timing principals was missing in your presentation, which i would have loved to hear you speak about in-order to grasp that principal repetition is always necessary as it reviews basic principals, that may reconnect properly in the learning process inside our thinking mind, as we confuse many ideas in our head, that is why sharing knowledge in this forum can enhance our learning and mastery of the car. Another fine video on exactly what I sought for my best engineered car ever. I was looking for timing chain info and was pleased to get cover gasket info, mine leaks in the plug areas so I'll try sealant as well. I think it's better to put gasket on cover first, because it usually has a groove which is more important to install properly than the flat engine block. Though some would say to just replace the gasket, I suspect Toyota OEM will be better than the cheap aftermarket stuff I was looking at. A little sealant should be best. Regardless, these vids keep me from having the shop monkeys do it.

    Thanks Toyota for this very instructive video - However, it struck me that since both the outer camshaft cover gasket and the inner spark plug gasket are clearly meant to be 'seated' in the preformed channels in the cover, then it would have been easier to replace the cover if a narrow bead of silicone gasket sealant had been run into the base of the outer and inner channels before pressing the associated gaskets (after cleaning all mating surfaces of the gasket and cover with the proverbial 'lint free' cloth) into their respective channels. Then once satisfactorily 'seated' another narrow bead of sealant could have been run along the undersides of the two gaskets. The cover would then have gone straight on in a single move with no possibility of any portion of the gasket being trapped or pinched between the cover and the machined faces of the cylinder head.

    The engine noise sounds bad so what was the fix for that?
    I have a 2000 yaris 1.0 with a worse noise but i think its the timing chain/tensioner.
    It has only 36,000 miles hard to understand why that chain would give toruble.
    Do you need gasket seal with a new gasket or just old ones?

    • @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor
      @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor  Před 10 lety

      If you have the bad noise from timing chain, it is good to check tensioner and timing chain. Maybe replace the tensioner.
      And good quality gasket glue works well, but the new gasket is always better choice.

Figured I would check on weather or not I need to do the timing chain while I'm at it? So I watched this to see how to check if it needs replaced or not. By 138,000 miles you would have snapped two belts,
      more if you are unlucky.
      Timing belts are silent killers - they don't tell you when
      they ware going to give way. If oil gets onto it from a leaking seal, good luck - they'll snap in no time at all.

      I only had good opinion about Toyota until now -60k miles on Prius and chain has to be changed -throwing engine check pointing car sensor but in fact it’s stretched chain - hard to believe at 60k

      bailer1971 Ok and not a nice thing. Please check again your ignition coil wires and then again the chain position.

    How much of slag is tolerable in a timing chain? I wish you could show pressing down (or up) slightly with your finger in the timming chain to show that tension

    can you help with an enquiry? my car, which is 2003 a toyota corolla verso 1.6 vvti, was off the road and with a flat battery for 10 months. last week i got it started and road worthy again but i noticed after 1 week the yellow engine light is on even though i have checked everything. the owners manual just says if this happens to go to the toyota dealer. do you know an easier explanation for what is happening? thanks in advance for any advice and thanks also for the upload

    Please help me. My 07Yaris has all of the symptoms of timing chain out, how much is too much for a mechanic to fix?

  • @williamfswann

    These Toyota engines do not require silicone sealer on the valve cover, the rubber seal fits in the recessed groves, this might cause a leak sooner than later; the timing chain cover does require silicone sealer at certain points.

    I have a bad VVT-i gear or (two gears total) on my Wife's 09 corolla /
    at least one is making noise on cold startup. I know that's the problem,
    but i cannot for the life of me find out if I can do this work myself
    and save 8-900 bucks. I speculate that the timing chain cover has to be
    removed. And maybe i wont have to take the cam shaft off which would be
    better.

      i would not mess with it ...you cand damage the vvti and it will cost you more...better have the dealer fix it or drive it until it dies and put a new engine...

    can a timing chain with slack cause a p0171 on these engines?

    • @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor
      @PeterFinnTheCarDoctor  Před 10 lety

      Hi, the there are possible issues p0171: Mass air flow sensor is dirty or faulty, faulty oxygen sensor, failed fuel injector, low fuel pressure, dirty fuel filter, exhaust leak between engine and first oxygen sensor and leaks in seals and pipes fuel intake area.
