Sandy’s Crabby Patty - FLY tying tutorial, sand crab or mole crab imitation - McFly Angler

- So I recently went out and fished the surf for surf perch. I looked up what flies are best to use for them and it seemed like sand flea (commonly called sand crabs or mole crabs) are their favorite food, so I tied this fly up for them and really liked it! I looked up common flies, and took a few different styles and merged them together to make my own. It came out looking just like the little creatures, and it’s really not too difficult to tie either.

Brilliant fly pattern you always come up with new methods of tying . You definitely haven't lossed your touch !!
Thanks man! I appreciate it. :).
Some really helpful techniques in this video. Thanks for posting.
Glad you like it and it helped. :)
great tie!
Thanks
Nice pattern... looks great
Thanks
I love this fly! It looks like the duck flank crab fly by sandbar flies
Similar yes
great looking bug!
Thanks 👍
That's a great imitation! I like the extra heavy eyes, it seems like it will make a nice dust cloud when it hits bottom, like a sand crab furiously digging to escape... I imagine that will trigger some ferocious strikes!
Hopefully!
Love it !
Thanks
Love this! Thanks
That's awesome...👍
Thanks
Крутая Кракозябла получилась.
Hey Shawn, nice fly. Bob Clouser had a family emergency the other night when he was supposed to teach the tying class so we got Greg Senyo instead. I wish it would have been Bob but Greg was a good stand in.
Awesome man! Sorry to hear about not getting bob, but sounds like it turned out ok. Hope he and his family is ok.
Brilliant
Thank you
Neat pattern
Thanks
Great fly!!! Been looking how to make a good sand flea hook
Thanks! Let me know how it works for you. You fish sand flea's often? Go to the beach much from Colorado? LOL.
Yeah when I go to NC once a year and there are tons there. King fish and pompano love em
Oh cool! Lol. I lived in Colorado up until about a month ago and unless you travel, there isn’t any ocean. Haha
Nice tie McFly
Thanks! :)
@@McFlyAngler have not been to Lake Perris this year I understand you recently fished it do you think it's worth the trip?
I didn’t catch, and everyone I talked to (mainly boaters driving by) said they didn’t either. Could have just been a bad day.
You should post a materials list under the description... great looking fly! Eh,..... never mind! I found it haha
Lol... glad you found it:...
Wow! Would this pattern work with Carp with colors that resemble a crayfish or dragonfly nymphs perhaps?
Great idea on stiffening the mallard flank with UV resin! I will have to try that!
I am sure it could work yeah. Give it a try and tell me how it does for you
I definitely wanna give this a try out here in the East Coast surf. Might be able to get a bluefish or a false albacore.
Also your vids have really helped me improve as a tyer and your materials lists are really useful.
Let me know how you do
Thanks man! Glad you enjoy them
@@McFlyAngler Definitely!
That looks like a good fly! I also have a fly tying channel =)
Cool man
@@McFlyAngler Go check it out =) do you have any tips for me?
Have tied many of these since I seen your video.., but now I am cooking them with fake nails as shell instead of mallard flank... so much easier and durable
For sure! I saw someone recently use fake nails. Thought it was genius! Glad you liked the video. Catch any fish on them?
@@McFlyAngler ... caught walleye perch on them... will be going to central coast Cali this weekend in search of barred surf perch
Walleye? Crazy! Haha! Well tell me how it does on the coast also. Good luck.
Little wall eye perch ... not speaking of the big wall eye Martian species lol
Are those saltwater fish? Like do they eat sand crabs?
Nice pattern.. curious if De barbed hook... I'm thinking no....also thinking for surf fishng the surf you need a barbed hook. I honestly think un barbed hooks loose fish.....
No I actually end up de-barbing all my hooks before fishing... glad you liked the video
I’m assuming this fly works good in the surf? How durable is it?
Seemed pretty durable to me. However I ended up moving after only getting to fish it once with no bites. So I don’t know really. But I can’t imagine it’s gonna get tore up too bad.
You should make a video about how to tie a goby fly, i am sure alot of people wpuld appreciate it.
Yeah I’ll look into it. Similar to a sculpin fly I’m guessing?
McFly Angler kind of yeah.
Already have a sculpin pattern coming out next week... see if that’s what your looking for...
Have you ever caught whiting on these?
Nope.
Great looking sand crab fly!! I Don't tie but i live in and fish socal beaches weekly. Would you be into selling some to me? Also.. I'm looking for some Piconi's Prowler's but hard to find. Id be willing to buy some as well if you'd tie em. Thanks
Yes I can tie whatever you want. Can you find me and private message me on Instagram? If not Instagram, then Facebook? We can exchange emails and I’ll be able to send you invoices.
@ Sand Bar Flies next time to give him credit for his pattern
This is not his pattern. Lol
Not even close to the marbled or hard shell version they do…
McFly, Why are you tying eyes at the rear of the Crab's body. Otherwise looks awesome and correct.
Lol. It just is for the weight. If you can get the flu to ride hook point up and figure out how to get the eyes towards the front, please let me know. Thanks!
@@McFlyAngler I'll work on it. What is the eye weight you used?
Pretty heavy, it was the small size lead eyes which are quite heavy for this size.
@@McFlyAngler Thanks. 1 more please; when tying on the feather, mine wants to stand up off the fly. How can I tie it to lay down?
1st make sure you trim the dubbing material well before tying in. 2nd, when you tie in the feather, don’t tie down too tight. Make one or two tight wraps by the head, then make light wraps behind those wraps. That will insure it lays flatter. Good luck.
I would think that someone who calls themselves McFly would be able to pronounce "O'Shawnnessy" correctly!!!
Just kidding, blowing you a line of crap!!! This is my favorite sand flea/mole crab pattern.
Thanks, and get this, I’m adopted into an Irish family. I’m the only red head in the Irish family. And turns out when I met my birth mother she told me I wasn’t Irish. Haha! I’m like mostly German and a little Italian. Go figure!
