Redfish Crack - The fluke of flies - McFly Angler Saltwater Fly Tying Tutorials

- Redfish are a fish that are tough on flies, so a redfish fly should be very durable. The redfish crack is an all synthetic take on the redfish slider, so it’s much more durable. This fly can withstand a pounding and still comes up looking great! And the fish love them. In fact, my friend Paul from the CZcams channel killer fuzz uses these in a smaller size to catch sunfish. Also I’ve used them for other saltwater species like speckled trout, and flounder. They fish a lot like a jigged fluke if you ever fish conventionally. And if so, you would know the soft plastic fluke is definitely a fish catcher!
I was told a guy by the name of Andy Packmore is the inventor of this fly. He sure made a good pattern!

Nice looking brackish water fly. Good to see you posting more patterns again. Cheers
Hey thanks! Yeah I’ve been posting most every week for the last 6 months... are they not showing up in your feed? Would be good to know if not, so I can fix how these are posted in hopes youtube actually promotes them.
Great video! I'll be tying this up and testing it out this coming week!
Let me know how you do on it
Watching this I need to schedule a salt water trip. Redfish in LA or TX sounds like fun!
Yes it does! I need to schedule one as well! Haha!
McFly- Captain Scott Null is the inventor of this fly and did an article on it in Texas Saltwater Fishing magazine several years ago. Scott guides out of Port O’Conner, TX.
Great thank you! I’ll add this in the description section
@@McFlyAngler I was only partly right it turns out. I sent you an email with a link to clarify.
Thanks! Yes I updated it already, thanks again!
Awesome build. I love it. I'm sure Me Redfish would eat that fly.
Hopefully mr redfish likes it! Haha! I mean it’s one of the most popular flies for the gulf around here, at least I’m told... glad you like it man, thanks
Great fly. Good for pompano and permit to.
Thanks! Yeah absolutely! It’s good for a lot of saltwater fish. Dude, Paul from killer fuzz says he uses these for Rios, a freshwater fish in Texas creeks. Of course he ties them small...
nice
Thanks
Got my fly rod from risin in the mail today. It's pretty. But I was a goof and forgot to buy backing and a leader so have to wait for it to come.
Oh haha! Yeah their backing is a good price, but unfortunate you have to wait again. Sorry to hear that. Glad you got it though, when you get to cast it let me know what you think. It is a moderate action rod, so keep that in mind with your casts. Slow down the cast a bit, and it will treat you very good. I used it a couple days ago on a small Creak and it was so accurate! Love this type of action!
@@McFlyAngler Yep, might figure out how to send it to you on Instagram to show you what I all got.
Oh cool yeah send me a pic for sure!
where do you get the congo hair?
I have a link in the description section
What size wire do you use to make your brushes?
Currently I’m using uni brush wire. I think medium size. I’ll check later and tell you.
@@McFlyAngler great. I want to start making some but was not sure on the size of the wire.
I think it’s .006, I wanna say that. Dang man I could be wrong. Lol! I’m not in front of my brush table so...
Ok so it’s uni DBW stainless medium size .006 wire. I can send a picture to you if you message me on Instagram
@@McFlyAngler I don't have an Instagram account. I think that's all the information I need. Thank you very much.
What's the spinning tool thing ? Where do ya get one ?
Sorry, what spinning tool? The dubbing spinner? Whip finisher?
@@McFlyAngler dubbing spinner ? TIA
Cool, yeah just a common simple dubbing spinner. You should be able to get it at any fly shop. If you can’t at your local fly shop, ask www.Dooleysflyfishing.com for one. They are an online fly shop that will have whatever you need.
@@McFlyAngler Looked on line found one thank you. I'll have to put one of those in my gear tying kits .
Cool man, have fun tying
Did you come across this article about the origins of the pattern?
www.texassaltwaterfishingmagazine.com/fishing/by-type/fly-fishing/introducing-redfish-crack
In Mississippi and Louisiana I have done well with an all black or purple and black version for reds and
an all white version for specks.
also since big reds are prone to show up at any time I use 1/0 tarpon hooks for mine
Robert, no I didn't see that one I don't think. Thanks for the info.
It's looks like a more dressed up lefty's y2k shrimp.
Yeh you could say it “looks” like it. But it is tied way different. As with any pattern, there are only a handful of original patterns, then new ones are variations of the original few. Sometimes they use different materials or different ways of tying it. In a way, many people would say anything with dumbbell eyes on it looks like a Clouser minnow. That y2k shrimp is a good pattern also! Very easy to tie. Not quite as durable as this though but who cares cause you can tie them so quick. Lol
