    This is a pretty easy job. The parts cost $15.

    Thanks for posting this. I just rebuilt the starter on my 1960 Ford 601 tonight, and referred to your video before and during the process... it was very helpful. Love all your tractor videos!

    Thanks for the useful post, we are working on a 53 Jubilee that just plain worked for 20+ years. We put off buying a 6 volt battery too long and as you know volts down cause amps up and killed the starter and never having a book on it we went looking for vids today and I suspected we had to pull the oil filter but working on it in the rain at 45F went in to learn more, seems hard to find folks that even know of these now. Yes ours is 6 volt positive ground with an original generator

    Thanks. In the end, I used a propane torch to heat the posts, put a puddle of solder on it, let it cool, then soldered the copper wire into the puddle. The solder appears to have a solid bond now.

    My starter quit right in the middle of planting potatoes. Your video waved the day! I was able to disassemble the starter, clean it up and get it working again. Something i noticed is that the prongs that hold the springs were twisted a little to keep the springs from falling off while you slip the end back onto the brush after assembly.

    I have a 57 Ford 860 and the bendix has hung up on the starter flywheel the last time I started. The Highpitch noise alerted me to an issue & immediate shutdown. I have since attempted to remove the starter with no luck. once unbolted it will slide out about 1/2-3/4 inch then hangs up on something internally. Other than splitting the tractor any suggestions on removal?

    Thanks for posting. I'm having difficulty with attaching the new bushings with solder, not getting a good solder ..... did you have any problems there? - I should note my starter is slightly different, doesn't have the bending post.

  • @edzgarage
    @edzgarage  Před 11 lety

    You need a lot of heat. Use a propane torch with a soldering attachment to get enough heat to make the solder flow.

  • @edzgarage
    @edzgarage  Před 13 lety

    @chuckgibson0 No, didn't have any trouble getting it apart. You many have to apply a little force, but be careful, the end cap is cast. I used 60/40 solder. Thanks for the comment and good luck on your starter.

  • @edzgarage

    Great video Ed but I will advise you to not use Fram oil filters as they are notorious for collapsing internally which of course will restrict flow.

    I have the same starter in a 1955 ford f250. for the life of me I cannot get this started. I replace the spark plugs, the coil, rebuild the carburetor, and new fuel pump. it's on a 6 volt system. the engine turns but really slowly and it still won't start. I took out the starter and I saw a really large rats nest behind it in the Bell housing area. I cleaned it out as much as possible. and the engine is still dragging. I'm wondering if there is something wrong with the starter or if I need to separate the transmission from the engine to clean that area out. any ideas?

    The video does not address cleaning up the commutator. Obviously that was done while working on this starter. Do you have a technique suitable for the average home shop? The 8N starter I am repairing also has a loose brush holder.
