- Earlier this year, filmmaker @ZachKing and his team reached out to Adam with an idea for a collaboration. We won't give the gag away -- you can watch it on Zach's TikTok channel ( / zachking ) -- but let's just say it required a particular and somewhat challenging practical effect involving the Leaning Tower of Pisa, bringing Adam back to his TV commercial days. What a fun build AND day with our new friends!

Always nice to see collaborations like these.
I'd love to see Adam collaborate with Colin Furze one day.
Should have just went to Furze for a new Mythbusters series
I want Adam in on Maker Secret Santa
Yes absolutely
I watched a documentary once about the Tower and they measured all of the wedges in the foundation and calculated the lean over time and plotted it with a computer and animated it. It was comical. The tower has basically been doing a dance back and forth over the centuries. What they finally did was pump concrete slurry around the tower into the ground to stabilize the ground. It's built on sand.
it always makes me laugh out loud when adam talks to his tools like pets:
"hey! ho! where are you going?! you, sit there and think about what you've done!"
😂😂😂😂🤣🤣🤣🤣
I was like, yeah I'm glad I'm not the only one that does this xDDDD
Seeing Adam talking about his build at the end in an almost apologetic manner, just brings home (to me at least) just how unaffected by fame he is!
It's truly humbling to witness and makes me love him even more, if that were actually possible!
He is literally one of my most favourite people on the planet.
He's a genuine people person, and a raconteur with no modern day equal.
I would listen to him reminisce all day, every day, if given the chance.
I need so much more of this content in my life! 😁
It's the neverending attitude when you are always displeased on some level by your own work that makes you good.
@@S.... if you are an artist who looks at their work and says its perfect or amazing then you are probably not a good artist, the great artists are the ones who can always see room for improvement, infact some of the greatest artists of all time often hated their work
Holding up a level to a model of the Leaning Tower of Pisa is top tier comedy in and of itself.
Top ‘tier’ comedy. 😂
15:41 - had to rewind and watch that like 4 times to really appreciate it. Just what I needed today!

heads up the link to Zachs channel is broken by the parenthesis! which people can just delete but...
might want to pin this
I love that we got those seconds of behind the scenes at the end! Realising that they look of in the distance to sell the perspective effect was an awesome insight 😃
Every time I see Adam’s shop I am both envious and excited! It’s like a hoard or creativity! Just every wall, shelf, desk, drawer from floor to ceiling is just countless, parts, pieces, materials, bits and bobs and tools and just… AMAZING!! I wish to one day have a shop of possibilities like his.
Like a real life super hero of gadgets and creations.

The video you speak of is not to be found at this time.
@@Lethgar_Smith Nope, we see that. We'll check in with them re: the delay. They'd confirmed last night.
@@tested Okee dokee, thanks for the update.
And how do those of us who refuse to use tiktok watch it?
@@Lethgar_Smith They thought we were going live at 10 am PT ... here is the video on Instagram! instagram.com/p/CryR-mQJ1r0/
"How is it possible that I screwed this up that badly?" is painfully relatable LOL
honestly if you guys released a video that was entirely adam's thinking shots (maybe with the occasional "hmm" or "what if....") we'd still watch the hecc out of it.
Ha!
The imagery of Adam holding a giant level against a replica of the Leaning Tower of Pisa was quite amusing to me 19:10
I love the shoutout to other CZcams creators like Corrior and Derek. Adam Savage, truly a gentleman.
I feel like in this video we get to see more of Adam the engineer as opposed to Adam the artist (to the degree they can even be separated). Aside from the sintered nylon tower (which Adam acknowledges even he did not make), this is all using materials and techniques that feel approachable even to someone like me whose "shop" is a drawer in a dorm room. Watching him place the cross braces to limit the range of motion of the tower was the perfect combination of aspirational and attainable, and reinforced me that cleverness is more important than equipment
More of this please!
I love the T-shirt I found on a merch page for a webcomic. It has four other towers that are actually in Pisa, and the caption reads, "The Upright Towers of Pisa: Quietly celebrating competence."
I climbed the real thing once... and it's so unsettling.
I usually don't have any problems with heights, and the leaning tower isn't all that high to begin with. But I was on edge the entire time I was up there because part of me thought the entire time the whole thing was about to fall over.
I knew it was safe and wouldn't just tip over... but every fiber of my body was telling me to get the hell off that thing because 'something' was off.
Didn't feel as unsettled by tower of Pisa as much as i felt in the Taipei 101moving and looking at the damper.
Use Compressed air to keep the bit cool and the hole clear while cutting. You could set up one of the flexi coolant lines on the bench (same as the black ones you have on the lights) and have a valve as a flow regulator
The Collab we didn't expect but needed
Maybe you needed it, but then again, I bet your entertainment standards are very low that's the reason for your pointless comment.
Exactly i didn't even notice the end of the title at first
Now we need the Collab with @CorridorCrew
Awesome!!! Collab between two awesome individuals. :) and the end result (final video) on Zacks channel is amazing.
I visited the tower today (!) Came home to the holiday home and saw this video 🤯
The actual tower is curved. The thing took some time to build. By the time they got funding to finish it, the base had started to lean. So they built the rest of it to be straight when viewed from the ground, which meant it wasn't in line with the base.
I have stood where you placed yourself. I was 10, you were being born. University of Pisa was my mom's alma mater.
This is a treat Adam, keep up the great collabs.
He just seems like the most genuine guy and it's a true pleasure getting to see him share his projects.
Sooooo glad I found your CZcams page! HUGE Mythbusters fan
You are AWESOME
Hey That Clip was awesome I loved it I thought it was just going to loop
But it went the other way 😂
Also the foreign concept of it being leveled made my brain remember its dumb and the comedy story telling made this a heart wearing and joyful experience Thank you
3:01 I can see om *major* detail that's different. The architects compensated for the lean when designing the bell chamber.
The bell chamber should not be at the same angle as the rest of the tower.
Zach actually mentions that at one point. It makes me wonder who made the computer model.
This got me thinking how you could extend this build to accommodate that, feel like it'd be possible by making the bell chamber a separate piece on its own pivot with its own counterweight hanging inside the rest of the tower...
@@HunterJE I like the idea of a bell chamber on its own pivot.
I believe it might be difficult to have it balanced.
Maybe linking the pivots through some gears, to make the bell chamber alignment to be vertical at any angle
Maaaaannnn.... I got literally goosebumps now.... so good
Love to hear Adam’s best ‘Otto’ admitting to using the old hole, man. Great moment
I’m pumped for the “collab” era of Savage. I hear he’s doing one with @twoodfrd soon. Puuuuuuuuumped!!🎉🎉
Love how you leave your Apple Watch face on. We can see how much time it’s taking to create. Thank you Adam! And thanks to everyone on his team
Reminds me of the Superman III gag where Supes under the affects of red kryptonite went and straightened the tower, causing the cart guy selling souvenirs to get angry.
love this collab!
Love the little 'tip gems' like the one at 3:41. xoxo
I love the slowly turning disk sander in the background
New Subscriber ... but very very long time fan and appreciator of your (and MB Team on the whole) amazing work and dedication to science, project management, proof through engineering, test, evaluation, and that bit o'magic that just makes us all tingle a bit; and beyond all else, your openness, kindness, and amazing capacity for story telling. Could not appreciate you more, Brother!
Hence my questions to know a bit more about you, and only if/as you wish to share. So here they are.... 1) What literature and/or stories (real life or fiction, and regardless of tech discipline) inspired you? 2) Which ones scared you? 3) Which ones worried you? and, 4) Which ones gave you the most joy and happiness?
A most appreciative friend and fan. 42-Jack.
Ps... I'm a fellow admirer of Kurtis, Karin and Homeless at CEE AUS. Thank you for reaching out to them. If you get to isit ... please video and post it. I'll be so happy to see you all together ... and just wish I could be there to share a visit and pint. They ... like you Dear Brother ... are just amazing. Could not appreciate you all more. God Bless. 42-Jack.
During Adam's thinking montage I heard a voice in my head: " It was at right about this time that Adam thought to himself that he probably should have trimmed the ring from the model before sending STL to be printed."
Could've built most of it before it was even printed. But that doesn't make for a very interesting One Day Build.
Adam: "This is the Leaning Tower of Pisa."
Me: "... it always looked so much bigger on TV."
What a fun build and the final video came out great!
The guy holding the weights under the tower while they filmed is a friend of mine hahah 43:44
Very cool build the timelapse music was a nice touch
For those carbide bits, they make wide flute variants these work a lot better on plastic and aluminum. The standard ones clog up with aluminum and plastics.
You just cut under water.
Love the content Adam, just a little idea for filming, would be to add a insta360 camera in the room when recording that way you always will have a shot with what you are doing, for those occasions when you get in the zone and forget to move the Camera 😉.
That has to be the best description of Zach King I've ever heard.
There was some missed humor in looking at a model of the Tower of Pisa and stating, "that's not level". I for sure chuckled!
I've been to Pisa, and seen the leaning tower ... and I've been up to the top of it (it was closed to the public for a long time, but when I went in 2006, it had been opened to the public again).
Good gag! Very fun to watch.
I went to the same film school as Zack. They showed a lot of his student films in my classes.
14:30 Sanding wheel just slowly going by itself in the background lol
15ish minutes in and it looks like Adam is wielding a weapon I'd half expect to see a giant use in Elden Ring.
When Adam said that watching it swing back and forth seemed funny, I thought it was ironic, because the discovery of a pendulum as a timekeeper was made in the cathedral of Pisa across the square from the Tower!
Seeing Adam Savage impersonating nylon made my day. Thanks Adam!
Awesome. Just awesome!
Your videos are amazing
Love seeing this
The tricks our mind plays on us - the whole time I was watching the beginning, it felt like the camera or the room was tilted.
Amazing!!
I love how Adam as fully embraced the CZcamsr jump cuts
When I see the Pisa tower, Superman III is what comes to mind.
Been having a rough few days, but this video and yesterday's live Q+A have been keeping my head above water. I am *so grateful* for the Tested crew and all their hard work in producing such excellent content. ❤ 🙏
We really appreciate your comment AND support. Thank YOU.
At 20 minutes in, the model on the bench with the pipe sticking out made me think Pisa Pop.
Watching that tower swing back and forth while Adam was talking 30:30 I thought that would make a cool clock.
I love how they sent someone to Italy for a 30 second video!
This is awesome
After all the painting you have done in your shop do you notice your equipment in the shop taking on interesting shades and colors over time with the minor overspray that happens normally?
Adam is the best, but man I don’t know how he doesn’t have catastrophic finger injuries or breaks more of his projects😂
He is soooooooo carefree in a workshop. 😂
I assume it's a product of being very familiar with one's tools and space. When you know exactly what you can get away with, the situation can look pretty haphazard and still be perfectly safe. That said, luck is also a factor.
Something like the leaning tower occurred in Barbados on the original clock tower on the Parliament buildings in Bridgetown, the original eastern and very beautiful tower was taken down due to it sinking and starting to lean and a smaller clock tower was built on the west wing of Parliament.
awsome as always adam.
isnt it time to move to a bigger place one day?
Adam cuts the _lower_ railing off at 27:50 but it's back and the _upper_ railing is gone at the end. You thought the internet wouldn't notice? We noticed.
Love the Music interludes...
I visited the Tower in 1982.
The worn spiral stairs that you walk up and down on the inside were scary as you lean right, forward, left, and back, over and over as you go up, then down those stairs. 😬😳
Well done. Greetings from Pisa.
Hog trough?
Wow that took my brains cells a will to find the memory that understands that reference!
❤ ❤love ur show
I always watch Adam at 2x speed, and his little voices and musical bits are much more entertaining when he's an octave higher lol
Hold up, changing the video speed doesn't affect the pitch on youtube
@@patu8010 But it does tho...
@@DanielLopez-up6os Really? I can't come up with a reason why it work differently for you. I'm using youtube on a desktop browser and I don't get the chipmunk effect.
i live in pisa, congratulation! good work! i like it! bravo!
The bottom work was fascinating
Oh thats cool! (And actually i live in Pisa and this video popped up in my youtube home just randomly lol)
Using magnets for constructions always makes me shiver too >,.,
Adam randomly bursting into song at 8:14 reminded me so much of Ben Heck
I’ll always remember when I was a kid and before they closed the tower to people. I was fortunate to go to top. Believe when you were by the down hill side. It was scary.
Wish it wasn't only on TikTok.
I'd love to see it
What you said about client brief and actual build, is very much like high end architectural building. The architect's drawings are just a concept, they hardly ever work in practice.
One piece of the tower almost rolled off the table. Another time Adam was hammering on part of piece. I was half expecting to see one of those tower sections break. Hehe... love the music that kicks in at the 22 minute mark. How appropriate to the build. :D Sure, take the railings off. They are amongst the small details that won't really be noticed on camera. One thing that occured to me is that you could have had the tower 3D printed without that base that got cut off. That would have saved a lot of work. I would like to see the finished video but I don't use TikTok.
Hey Adam! Did you guys every do anything with the "wave tank" you guys reached out to me about years ago? Still love your channel! -Torrey
what an effin brain. look at that shop so incredible XDDD badass af
I love all your videos and the sounds you like I like some of them the tings and metel
“How did I screw up so badly?” - every maker on every project ever lol.
7:40 - Watching Adam struggle with cutting the nylon and mention it's predisposition to melting made me wonder whether a heated wire might be less effort and produce a cleaner cut...
Hi Adam, for future reference. You CAN machine sintered nylon on your lathe with HSS tools. Save you a lot of headache.
hey Adam how long does it take to build a model Plus there's the question that I had in my mind for a long time how much did it cost to buy buster for the TV show MythBusters back then
"That's not level!" They don't call it leaning tower of Piza for nothin!
I was convinced the tower on the table was poorly rotoscopped cgi until Adam actually touched it.
I can't find the Pisa video on Zach's channel. Did I miss something or is it not released yet?
This seems like the lead up to an Igor's Moving Hump gag. Can't wait.
What hump?
31:54 I think that can also apply to other industries, such as software development in which you have to anticipate (almost) all the ways the software could be used (or misused/abused) and program in configurability and account for user preference prior to release. On many occasion I find some particular behavior of a program not customizable and it frustrates me so much when the program in question is not open-source.
31:35 what "works for the shot" I was wondering when that, vs current historical, would come home to roost. The whole de-lean, counterweight rotation project was the key. The itrw object was going to keep on tipping till it fell over, if it was not arrested.
18:39 "It's a lot of weight" - true, but maybe even more importantly it's a lot of arm (the addition of the higher tiers has greater impact on the balance compared to the same mass on lower ones because they are further from the fulcrum)
A little Pisa Tower trivia. The tower started to lean as it was being built, so the upper levels lean at a different angle than the bottom levels since the builders tried to keep the tower vertical as they built up. The current angle of 3.97 degrees is the result of corrections made between 1993 to 2001. Prior to that it's lean reached 5.5 degrees. The official name is _Il campanile di Cattedrale Metropolitana Primaziale di Santa Maria Assunta; Duomo di Pisa._
I was in Pisa somewhere around 93-95. Its massive. There were some works in progress at time, lead counterweights on outside ring as they tried to stabilize it. It was leaning heavilly at time, miracle it survived for so long.
That is the longest small diameter drill bit I've seen in my entire life.
