Adam Savage's One Day Builds: Laundry Folding Table!

- This build is an infrastructure improvement--not for Adam's workshop--but for his home! Adam furnishes a large piece of butcher block and turns it into a laundry folding table for his home laundry room. Adam cuts it to size to sit across the top of his washer and dryer, adds a small backsplash lip, and finishes the whole thing in tung oil before getting it into place. A quick and easy project for the weekend!

Haha , that's the wrong way to pick shit up .. had me rolling , so glad I'm not the only one who does that and then tells himself what I did wrong .
Way cheaper just to buy it at homedepot or local lumber yard.
Lowes & Home Depot is where you can find them in the countertop areas. not sure why he said they are hard to find....
You can find those off the shelf’s at most Home Depot’s depending on the region. Most of the ones I’ve seen were maple. Also fun to make on your own!

As a former cabinet maker/wood worker, putting a sealant on the underside will help with warping due to humidity from the washer. Just keep an eye on it over time.

I personally would have used some small rubber feet on it instead of the VHB. With the weight of the block, that should be more than enough to keep it in place, and allows it to move a little when the machines vibrate in use. Plus you can just pick it up if you need to move it for maintenance/replacement. Also most Home Depots now carry butcher block countertops in store these days.
I was also concerned about the vibrations. Washing machines vibrate a LOT. So to have something in a fixed position sitting on top of two of them sounds a bit problematic.
On the butcher block hardware shop though... it depends on locale. Maybe these things are easy to find in the US but over here you'd pay a royal prenium for butcher block countertops when you could buy the timber and make one yourself for a third of the price.
I'd be afraid I'd have to pull it out for maintenance/repair etc. I'd just use a couple of lengths of the waffle style rubbery shelf/drawer liner. It works great for holding workpieces in place.
also, you're mechanically coupling the two machines, which both vibrate. I have a feeling the system as a whole will be noisier this way.
Vhb sucks to remove
VHB comes in quite thick sizes to provide dampening from vibrations. I've used it in lots of automotive applications without issue for years.
Adam has never given me anxiety before, but balancing a table top on its side on an uneven surface and then going here is my circular saw is doing just that now. After Decades of watching him. Thank you for the 3 way boxes/ clamps as I type this.

Even with the boxes it was still a beyond stupid cut, he has a table saw he could have used for that cut.
@@kz.irudimen A tablesaw with a dado stack or a router would be a way easier and more precise way to do that. He really doesn’t think through his steps sometimes. Love his videos, but holy crap…
And why use a rebate at all? The backsplash isn't going to take any stress, just plant it on there plain style, just glue it and screw it. Adam often makes me nervous, the way he handles woodwork

BTW, those cardboard channels that protect the edge are really useful. I cut them up into shorter sections and use them to lift boards off the bench when applying varnish and paint.
I like to keep used tp rolls in the shop for the same purpose, and many more.
Would LOVE a follow-up on this in a couple months to see how the different vibrations of the units impacted the attachment of the top!
I just did a very similar upgrade! But I decided to suspend the butcher block over the machines as I was worried about vibration. Additional utility: I fabricated a rather attractive metal and wood hanging rack above - on a pulley system. So good to get these spaces right in the house. Defo going to steal those laundry organization cubbies from you Adam!
Not that anyone cares, but as someone from the kitchen world, I appreciate Adam really making sure to correctly categorize the slab as bowling alley style versus butcherblock. Butcherblock can come in a variety of sizes, but the most crucial aspect is that end grain is up. Why Adam may have had trouble finding that type of slab is because unfortunately the big blue and orange box stores don't care as much, and refer to what he uses as butcherblock counter tops, and it irks me to no end. Rant over, this video is great, Adam is awesome, whoever is reading this, have a great day!

I have to say you brought a smile to my face when you were trimming the backsplash. You made me remember that my Mom always used her tongue when she was doing something intricate. She never thought about it, but she said it gave her better control. 💖☺
We are all well acquainted with Adams workshop but not so much his home. It was an exuberant feeling to have another small glimpse into his home, once before with his home office. It would be an honor to have the opportunity to see more of Adams home and see how his and his wife's personality fill the space. Love you Adam!
Watching the movie and prop stuff is always enjoyable, but these practical organization and home improvement videos are exceptional.
I can simultaneously enjoy Adam's commentary and suggestions, and appreciate a beautiful bit of work that I could also find practical for my own uses.
Adam, after seeing a bit of struggling with the sawhorses... BORA Speedhorse (Saw Horse)... I didn't know I needed it so bad until I owned a pair.. Makes a huge difference. I always dreading getting my sawhorses out... Now it's not a chore to do it, so I reach for them frequently in my shop. :-)

"Bowling alley floor"- I've never heard that but it's a good description. Most retailers call that "butcher block" even though it's not real butcher block. I wanted to build a table for my office to use as a desk, I couldn't find a premade piece in the size and cost range I wanted to I made my own by laminating strips cut from 2x6 lumber. It's not as precisely made as the commercial material but I have the pleasure of knowing that I made it.
we've gone full circle now, from how to build amazing props to solving basic furniture problems... and i still love every second of the process. Being meticulous about the smallest thing, even the completely benign or ordinary is a sign of a good maker.
Been wanting to do this in my laundry room. I was stuck trying to figure out how to build legs, attach it to the wall, etc... Such a simple solution. Thanks for sharing.

Definitely thought the table was gonna be folding… not a folding table. I was waiting to see the hinges and how it was going to work with the space but this makes much more sense. 🤣

Cordless track saws have revolutionized how I work with sheet goods in the shop. The precision, speed, and cut accuracy are light years ahead of trying to wrestle large materials through a table saw or using a straightedge and a "normal" circular saw. Mine is a Makita. The tracks are even compatible with Festool.
I love all the background noises. I know a lot of people try and block it out or have noise cancelling software etc, but the simple sounds of the chair rolling around the floor is 👌
I don't mind the chair noise, but whenever hosts use music while the narration is taking place, well, let's just I am not a happy camper. Music is not needed unless it's a dance or music video.
My office desk is made of two sections of that butcher block countertop from Home Depot, stained and sealed with polyurethane, then mounted to an Uplift adjustable L-shaped frame that I stretched. It's absolutely beautiful.
My sitting/standing desk was made using the same method, the motorized frames are about 150 on amazon and the top didnt bring it over the cost of a premade one by much at all. the result is a much more durable desk that was thick enough to embed a usb dock, wireless charger, and one of those 2 inch circle outlet things.
I just built a new desk with my dad, used ikea alex drawers and 2 legs to make an L shape. 6'x25" butcherblock was half off so it was actually relatively affordable

A quick tip: when you do wood work for outside or dam places, use boat transparent varnish instead of oil. If you do use oil you'll have to redo it every year or so, if not the wood will puff up.
$700 festool gets Trumped by a 1/3 price ac mains saw! Priceless!! That is one lovely bit of engineered timber board. Gives me some ideas for a new workbench.

I just love the "realness" of your videos. This really takes me back to being a kid, watching my dad tinker and build and create in his workshop in our basement. I can smell the sawdust and glue and varnish, I can see all the cans and plastic bins filled with nails and screws, the piles of wood scraps, the bundles of extension cords! I loved being down there with him, watching him work and asking him questions- he ALWAYS has time to share with me. The only way this video could be more perfect would be classic rock on the radio and the damn air compressor kicking on and scaring the shit out of me. 🤣🤣

I feel like if you raised the shelf above the work surface about 12 inches it would make the work surface much more ergonomic for its purpose. Love the project.

Only 2 minutes in, but this is something I've been wanting to do for years in my laundry room.
I was thinking of just a piece of plywood or painted MDF, but I believe I've got 23 minutes left to be convinced of making it a solid wood top!
It adds a lot of warmth to a very white room!

Love these little home projects! I'm surprised you didn't put a keel fin along the underneath to slat in between the washers and hold it in place, providing an easily removable solution.

thank you for allowing us into your home even if its was just in spirit. I did something along those same lines with my washer dryer unfortunately since my washer is a top loader i had to extend the table from the top of the dryer but i built legs to stabilize it. made that room so much more productive. that looks so good!

Hmm, all washer and driers I have seen have adjustable feets, so check if those legs are adjustable and ditch the shim that eventually going to be kicked out or moved out by the vibration.
As soon as I saw the wood you were talking about, before scrolling down to read the description, I thought "Oh, that's Birch Butcherblock. We have that at Home Depot". Scrolling down I see indeed it's birch.
Folding table is great and all, but I am going to need way more info about that cool linen storage cabinet.

Adam using a piece of scrap clamped to the foot of the circular saw to act as a fence blew my mind. Never seen that technique before
Hey Adam, I would suggest mounting it to the wall or giving it legs framing the washer and dryer. The reason being the machines will vibrate a lot making the top vibrate and move around. It would be nice to have a solid surface while the machines are going.
Yup, I would have added legs and made it a table that goes over the machines as well. Avoids all the possible vibration issues and framing it close wouldn’t take up much space.

*our laundry(ish) room also is an impromptu workshop/repair station/bench...dad built an wrap about over lay for the washer and dryer so that we can utilize its surface for what we need to do if its small without having to go down to the backyard shop which is equipped for larger more labor intensive activities...we still have reasons to go down to the shop but for on the spot fixing the diminutive scale of our in house set up works very well*

is it me or the small things you do like throw things or the shuffle that just makes me smile so much.. all the little quirks that I have not only done but seen so many do.. hope you are able to find the random screws or brushes. anyway keep up the fun vids cheers.
As a maker I have worked around many of my home's infrastructure. I have always, nearly instantly, regretted something (even) semi-permanent. Such as with VHB tape to a surface. We both know you're not supposed to cram anything up against the wall of plugs and wires, so keep the gap. But make a separator. That holds the work surface in one direction. Then keep the 6" overhang, split left and right for a wooden gripper with squishy rubber on the insides, so that you have to mush it into position. Now it will stay put with minor clothes-folding tussle. A backsplash is essential but--! one needs a gap to get at the power sockets.
BECAUSE, as sure as Milwaukee made little red handles, one of those bastards is going to start coughing up blood real soon. With my plan, you just whip it off to gain access. With your plan you have to dig out a crow bar-- or let the tech do it...

Adam you might want to level that dryer with its feet. They screw in and out for that purpose. That clothes pin will vibrate out eventually.
It sure brings the room together, man.
We used to have a similar (less elegant) worktop mounted on top of the washer and dryer for a similar purpose, but a dryer fault made it all go up in flames. I’d factor in some cooling/ventilation between the top of the machines and the wood. Those things get hot!
I just finished making some butcher block shelves and cutting boards just to open you you’ve and see the great savage working with butcher block
Instead of tape you could use forstner bits and embed some rare earth magnets, since washer/dryers are usually steel
I have similar washing machine and setup. I added a tablet above the piping on the back splash. In my case it was in a closet type of space, so two walls on the side, so the main board is supported on L angles.
Adam, no idea about how the washing machines work in California but here in Europe I certainly would not attach anything directly to or on top of one. Once they start the spinning cycle, they tend to jump and vibrate around, especially if not fully or evenly loaded. I can't imagine that board is going to help matters - it will likely beat the crap out of the surface of both your machines and possibly the wall once the dance starts.
If you want such folding table, fix the board either to the wall or on legs around the machines so that the vibrations won't transfer to it.

I used a piece of butcher block countertop atop my dogs kennel to turn it into more of a piece of furniture than wire cage in the corner of my house. Keep houseplants on top of it.

I assume the laundry room is in the garage, which makes sense since he said they lost a spot to park in the garage for the bins. Interior garage doors have to be self closing.
I think a plain tung oil finish may be prone to water spotting given it's proximity to the wash sink. I would suggest waiting for the tung oil to fully cure and then giving it a topcoat of clear water based acrylic.
Tested is really poplar today. Also should get some reusable silicone brushes for your glue applications. That way you don’t have to throw away so many of your acid brushes.
Silicone brushes are okay, and they’re super easy to clean. For this one, I’d just use my finger.
With those brushes I always have to pick shed bristles out of the glue, so for my next project I bought the silicone brush kit.

Birch Ply would be my next best thing, but I fancy the look of that top. Staining & finishing that would be my jam!
I understand the need for flexibility, but you might want to revisit this design soon Adam. If your washer/dryers have any wobble to them while in use, the top might end up sliding off from the vibrations. You could solve it by building a back and sides surround for the machines that you can attach the top to. essentially, it would be a cupboard that encloses 4/5 faces of the machines and allow the top to float above them.
