Imagining a Solarpunk Education

  • If solarpunk is the future with humanity put back in, achieving it means taking control of that future from economic, social, & political forces that seem to be on autopilot to self-destruction, utterly divorced from human desires & human intervention. One path we've imagined already, and its grimy survivalist individualism was the defining feature of Reagan-era science fiction classics. However, in its radical reimagination of economic & social structures, solarpunk resists the nihilism & doomerism of the grim dehumanized technological dystopias that dominate the worlds of Blade Runner, Robocop, & William Gibson's Neuromancer.
Do we have the willingness to challenge the predominant social, economic, & political structures & systems that need to be challenged? To change the very nature of humanity's relationship to the planet? What role does education play in all of this?

the craziest part is between 2004-2013 solarpunk was a huge mainstream idea and concept for society going forward post y2k crisis, we were so very close but backed out for any number of reasons, I can only imagine how much better everything would have turned out if we stayed the course for a more eco conscious society utilizing nature and technology from energy collected from solar and hydro electric sources far more, quality of life would probably be far greater than it currently is and climate damage would be far less reducing the impact of climate change resulting in less drastic damages to the ecosystem, economic opportunities would have grown even more within the leap into what jobs and advancements we could have made in a solarpunk society. a future we almost had and seeing what we once developed keeps me hopeful maybe one day we'll pick it back up.

@@apoorhorseabusedbycenk It seems that you've gotten solarpunk confused with greenwashing in the neoliberal present. Solarpunk is a radical re-imagination of economic, political, and social systems toward both social community & sustainability.

Reading Octavia Butler since the early 90's is the reason I've been obsessed with Solarpunk once the subculture finally received a name. Afrofuturism books are on another level of creativity.
Thanks for the video. I agree with your takes, and appreciate your research and thoughtful presentation. I've always believed that a Solarpunk society was all too possible. The problem is that we have too many people with money and power addicted to more money and power. These are also the same people who don't see all manner of life as valuable. The world will never improve with these folks breathing the same air as us 😢

Butler's Afrofuturism, and that of many others - Jemisin, Okorafor, brown, etc. - is a HUGE influence for us. If we can't think differently about the future we don't have anything worthwhile to aim for.

Thanks Felix! It's definitely and understandably a cycle ("it's so over", "we're back!") of feeling helpless and overwhelmed by the scope and magnitude of the problems, then recognizing how important and impactful small changes and solidarity actually are to achieving larger change. This is why we bring in adrienne maree brown's Emergent Strategy, recognizing that something as simple as a conversation can propagate into an entire movement for change. Can't lose sight of solidarity either. We're gonna need everyone working together, so everyone counts!

Love this. This gives me new power to go teach tomorrow. I currently work in a school that has been drained of all creativity and students just need to fall in line. I don't like to teach in that directive, topdown way that's being asked of me. Besides the fact that it doesn't fit me, it also clashes with my solarpunk ideals. since this is my first year as a teacher I struggle a lot to find my own ways and students abuse the freedom I try to give them. But now I want to keep trying
Luckily, I'm going to a Montessori school next year, that aligns much better with those ideals: student ownership, inspiration amd collaboration. Hopefully I can learn a more horizontal teaching style then and really learn to inspire. Buuut, baby steps.

Great video! I've been psychologically preparing for societal collapse since reading about peak oil around 2007, but I'm an eternal optimist, and when I discovered Solarpunk it lit me up. I'm writing a Solarpunk novel at the moment, and education is one of the things I've been thinking about a lot. I really like the way Starhawk's novels describe their learning pathways, and I also feel that time outside buildings in nature is important for all students (and people in general), so I like the idea of a curriculum that breaks down the 'silos' of different subjects and teaches more holistically... for example kids building raised garden beds could combine maths, carpentry, biology and even cooking, plus a sense of responsibility in terms of keeping plants alive until harvest time.

i believe, there shouldn't be "one" curriculum. rather school should offer a variety of courses and everyone can learn what interests them and dive as deep into it as they want. though there probably are things that are good to learn/experience, that one (a pupil) might not opt for voluntarily. no idea how to solve that, escpecially determining what unpleasant experiences and learnings are good for life and general education and which should be optional

The side by side display of visually connected documents is what cannot be done on paper - quite different than a world wide webpage whose notion of linking isn't anything but an accelerated retrieval from the relevant library shelf. What is part of a modern cottage industry of literacy is that, when viewing a particular document, that you can see the conversations elsewhere which quote or otherwise excerpt passages from the work you're reading. This disrupts the prevailing broadcast organization of attention into self organized networks of conversations increasingly coordinating solidaritiously. No one will have a monopoly on the forefront of, as if there's a

Let me get some words that I thought about as you were describing the school system: you didn't really take any of the consumerist issues into account. Anything from papers and pencils do the furniture and especially the food we would serve at the schools cafeterias wouldn't be at all what we would have today. The Books in the gothic literature class would be likely browned and second hand, probably rugged and seldom new. The notes would be written on notepads, screens yellowed out for the protection of the student eyes and covered in scratches from the hundreds of students that it have alternated between. Furniture is of varying fabrics as they have been stiched and patched over and over again in order to cover stains and cracks. Wooden planks and armchairs, tables and chairs would be replaced per necessary. The whole aesthetic of the school would be incredibly rustique, almost like a big old cottage.
The food served in the cafeteria would be from local farms, but limited by them as well. There would seldom be fresh meat and fish and if they did it would be a first come first serve. Main protein is likely to be lentils and chic peas or soy, carbs would depending on the region be a breed of potatoes and vegetables would be only what is available in season. The dishes would be a standard rather than a free of choice; a new recipe adapted to our more sustainable world, probably unlike anything we have today

Thank you for the video. I'm happy to see solarpunk gaining traction. Metamodernism has always seemed like a liminal philosophical state, instead of a movement, due to being defined by 'oscillations'. Although maybe there's a post-metamodernism? 😂Solarpunk is productive because it's looking forward. Media has done a thorough job of describing our extinction, but we need to stoke our collective imagination for a realistic, non-utopic future. I say non-utopic, becuase that's too easy to dismiss as fantasy. We need something that can compete with the realism of dystopia and extinction narratives.

Most of this, I love. I think the one thing that's still harder to imagine than the end of the world even in this vision, is how little students actually need classes and schedules. The conversation style free exploration to "class and curriculum" learning ratio, if you truly allow student autonomy, will vary enormously from student to student, but I confidently predict that it is a small minority of students who would use as much scheduling as you describe here. So, LOTS of space and time is needed for free emergent activity....

also, for the few off the grid vehicles needed, use methanol produced via combining co2 in the air with water, using electricity from the nuclear plants during low power consumption times.
There, everything fixed except for planes, and that can be mitigated by banning planes for anything but long distance flights.

      @LucidiaRising Před 8 měsíci +1

Sudbury goes a bit further and more radical than your ideas tho, because it says there should be no formal structure around the students practice other than that which they create for themselves - no structured lessons at all, they are allowed and encouraged to be self-lead in their educational exploration, and the teacher becomes a facilitator of the childs learning to teach themselves whatever they wish to learn.
its similar to the parable about teaching a man how to fish - if you show a child how to learn in the way that is most effective for them, everything else will follow quite naturally, like dominoes falling.

Oury consumerist culture have turned the average person into passive consuming cogs in the system.
No system will work that doesn't allow humanity to be dynamic, producers. Humans are only happy when they are part of a dynamic community.
To break this system people need to gather, visualize, create and grow their futures. Once we, in groups take back our agency, they system as we have had sold to us will begin to change, without the epic loss of life other systems seem to celebrate.
Our school system has been consumerized as well. Forcing students to become consumers and cogs, devoid of agency in our lives.

Oh my God is it harder to imagine an end to capitalism. I'm trying to do a solarpunk idea and while I am not someone who likes presenting pure utopias the solarpunk societies are trying their best to really change, but one of the things that was non-negotiable was that it had to not happen after a hard-reset apocalypse and it has to be post-capitalist and the closest thing I can think is that there is a required amount of raw GDP that has to be produced but they use automation, better educational practices, and syndicalized unions, and a robust system of accolades, recognition, and community awards based on progress.
And even if the apocalypse is around the corner, apocalypse is only a revelation. The apocalypse is never the end.

i love this solarpunk education, but what stops all the students from becoming professional sports athlete, professional gamer, professional writers and professional artists. some of these are good, but what will they do after school if there isn't enough of these jobs for them. these jobs are already rare, highly sought after and underplayed.
math might be more boring then reading Gothic horror, but its hard to build a house or write code with Dracula information.
On the other side, if this is after all jobs has been taken over by AI and robots(the friendly solarpunk friendly kind) this could be a fulfilling life for humans after the removal of boring jobs.
All that said, this was a very good video and very inspiring. hope to see some of these ideas implemented in my country.

  • @resilientfarmsanddesignstu1702

All species in the universe that existed, exist or will ever exist (including humans) share three mandates which I call my three “Ethical Laws of the Universe”: First, to create a sustainable world (that is ecologically-based and ecologically-constrained) that has greater health, resilience, diversity, capacity and productivity to sustain human life and it’s ecologically-based life support system - which I call the “means of subsistence”, than what was provided to them by their parents. Second, to propagate that human and Terran life throughout the Universe wherever alien life has not already done so. Third, to protect and defend all life (but, being Terrans, especially human and Terran life) from anything, be it hazardous phenomena or threats, whether originating from inside or outside, to the system. TO ensure humanities long-term survival, in order to receive funding and other resources, all human activities, including education OUGHT to be required to explicitly state how it will further these three overarching objectives. The requirements for sustainable human and ecological life are broad and extend far beyond food, water, and shelter, thus the means of fulfilling these mandates should be equally broad and inclusive. The point is to both draw attention to the purpose of life and the Ethics that underpin and sustain that life - this purpose being to create an ethical being. Liberty is the expression of free Will. It is the freedom to act responsibly and sustainably in accordance with our conscience to do the ethical thing. (This distinguishes it from simple hedonism - promoted by consumer capitalism, as the freedom to do whatever you want, regardless of the harm that this may cause to other humans or to the ecological commons.) Only the pursuit of liberty is ethical and sustainable, thus only the pursuit of liberty should be supported.

Great video but one of solarpunk's key ideas is a lack of capitalism. The ending of your video talks about "paying teachers more" and "more educational funding" rather than moving away from those obsessive capitalist behaviors. A solarpunk society values education as much as clean water and air but has removed it from the capitalistic rail guards that value economic production over individual enrichment.

Totally! I think until that is achieved, until we stop valuing education through a capitalist lens, a way to begin to shift the value system, and toward the value of educators, is to raise teacher wages. Until we get to a point where it isn't important, ensuring material conditions IS important.

I'm half-way through your video, but I have a question about 'the doom-loop'. You claim that it is a result of the modern capitalism culture. However, when we look at historical records we see that in every culture (or at least Indo-European cultures) there is an idea of 'the golden age'. The 4 Yugas. The neverending circle of ages (in Ovid, for example).
I think that the idea of eschatology in an essential part of human psyche and not simply an ideology.

As to the specifics of education, Schools should be designed to self-actualize students and produce ecologically literate and ethical citizens. Rather than being designed in accordance with Henry Ford’s model to produce more dependent workers and less independent and critical thinkers, they should be designed according to MY model to produce more independent and critical thinkers and LESS dependent workers. As part of their responsibility, teachers should act as content providers to build up an maintain a virtual library of knowledge content that students can select from. This will ultimately free up teachers from their current roles as teaching these standard courses to a much better role as coaches assisting students in HOW to self-learn, innovate and create new knowledge. They will act as mentors and coaches assisting students with similar interests to learn. All projects should be designed to fulfill my triple mandate of sustainable “Laws of the Universe” detailed in my earlier post. To receive a college degree, you must write a thesis or conduct a project that fulfills my sustainability laws, develop a feasible business plan to implement the idea in the society, community and ecologically-based and ecologically-constrained sustainable economy and the university business incubators should be repurposed to by fund and launch these new student led businesses.

Consider that starting from a tried and tested base may be better than 'back to the drawing board' type proposals. I think your proposal of how it would look will fall flat for the following reasons:
    - reliance on government for leadership and funding
    - belief that people are all inherently good but simply misguided

I'm not trying to be mean, and I like that you are making these types of videos, but part of the problem I've seen with videos like this is that you talked about a lot of interesting things, but didn't give anyone solid advice for making any change themselves. A good start to fixing climate change would be for more people to go out and talk to some of the old hippies and people that society has labeled as "weird". They knew something was wrong with our world and actually went out there to try and create the change they talked about. They've built earthships, eco villages, underground houses, crazy solar powered contraptions, and "crazy" alternative lifestyles. I would recommend searching for "Tamera solar village" "earthships" or check out "Kirsten dirksen" her channel interviews different people living a wide variety of lifestyles.

Your use of AI imagery is antithetical to your message. If you aren't prepared to stand in solidarity with the artists and creative people who are needed to help envision a better future, then why are you making a video about solarpunk?
I sincerely hope that you don't get defensive over this criticism, and instead use it as an opportunity to grow. Andrewism sets a great example for respecting and even collaborating with artists. You don't need a ton of flashy visuals to inspire people, a few well-chosen (and credited) images will suffice if what you have to say is compelling.

Hey, Nick from HRP here. All good points, honestly. We absolutely do pay artists for commissioned work and believe in compensating contributors for their time & labor (where many education orgs do not). Solidarity *is* the most important thing and we definitely realize the use of AI art can be a barrier to that. Since this video we've also used tools, like Shutterstock's image generator, that actually do compensate & provide royalties to artists. We're trying to be responsive & responsible in our use of these tools, thanks for helping keep our focus.

    • @verdigrii
      @verdigrii Před 9 měsíci +1

@@nickcovington8005 I'm glad to hear that this is something you care about and that you commission artists!
Tbh solidarity rn looks like not using AI. None of the mainstream AI image generators are ethical. Shutterstock's one sounds better on the surface but what they did was create a competing platform in their own market which uses artists' work against them. TINY bi-annual 'compensation' payments aren't preferable to more users paying directly per original image. Worst of all, this wasn't implemented on an opt-in basis, and there was no warning so people only found out when it was too late to avoid being included in the dataset.
Putting all that aside for a moment, I think the video serves as a really great intro to solarpunk and adjacent ideas for people who need to see how these things relate to their own lives :)

Cute pictures and story. The education part was relevant, but the UBI, and other stuff is unecessary. The missing piece in all of this is socialism. Without socialism you can't have any of this because the ruling class won't allow it. And the most efficient strategy for realizing the socialist revolution is to unite, organize and build new cities from scratch. While building new cities (circular shape, see TVP or TZM) we would also build a new educational system from scratch, new schools and a new university. And all the goods and services produced and consumed within the city would be produced and distributed by the university, which would function as a cooperative as well. So instead of a lot of different private comapnies producing the goods and services, they would all be produced by a single cooperative entity, the university. That means that the means of production are truly in the hands of the people. And we would use science and automation to gradually make every good and service available for free and eventually, stop usin money and trades of any kind altogether.

There was a sci-fi series that I forget the name of but the crew was in space on a long voyage and I was very impressed with each of their intelligence in not only their own field of expertise but in other fields as well. It means that if any one person goes down, someone else can take their spot and keep operations going. In other words, everyone is a leader. We would be raising a generation that are never mindless followers but thinks for themselves and takes up personal power. There’s power in community. All power to all people.
