My hot take: education isn’t about educating. It’s about finding those with strong memory and “weeding them out” from those “destined to be working class.” School is about finding those that shouldn’t be workers. It’s disgusting
Cold take: college should be free and “mandatory” like high school.
exactly... college is to learn outside of your field.
i.e. my college education was in criminal justice... but ... i had classes in religion, theatre, philosophy, and strict law reading. ..... each of those were framed within criminal justice but the point was to keep a base level of knowledge of outside topics.
specificity of skill is great but IMO a jack of all trades is fantastic and should be a BASE level of knowledge. just enough for people to be able to say " oh yeah i recognize that".
i dont know the class but but yess...... we read a bunch of comic with a criminal justice bend. V for vendetta, The Watchmen etc
What u said about alfie kohn- I think that applies to the term progressive education, in general, too, though i havent figured out a way to break out of that. Now that i thimk of it, dewey hated being clumped together into progressive education, probably THE progressive educator...
It can be super muddy! People avoid using the label for lots of reasons. We embrace it in part, perhaps ironically, because it connects us to this rich historical tradition from Dewey, through critical pedagogues, to the practitioners, caregivers, educators, scholars, and activists of today.
None of these are hot takes.
Tomato tomahto
I think it's a play on words, and it was effectively done, in my opinion..
