Nourishing Caregiver Collaborations w/ Nawal Qarooni
Today we are joined by Nawal Qarooni. Nawal is an educator, writer, and adjunct professor based in Jersey City, who founded and operates NQC Literacy, a consultancy firm serving PreK-8 school leaders and teachers in holistic literacy instruction, equity-driven practice, and family engagement. She also serves on several committees, including the National Council for Teachers of English Committee Against Racism and Bias, evaluates manuscripts for Reese Witherspoon's LitUp program, and advises the Library of Congress Literacy Awards Advisory Board. Her recent book, Nourishing Caregiver Collaborations: Elevating Home Experiences and Classroom Practices for Collective Care is a deep dive into how educators can celebrate and elevate students’ families, while encouraging shared reflections and connections to what’s happening in schools.
We talk about building a collective culture of care that invites in families to build a better education system that supports all learners. We're combining the lens of progressive education lens of the classroom to the greater support structures that raise children toward a better future.

    This McMaster University (Hamilton, Ontario, Canada) academic tells us that "policies which produce racial cleansing [...] have become the defining features of everyday life." [6:15] It's obvious that this gentleman has built a career out of making fashionably outrageous claims without ever having to defend them. That was pretty clear to me from the title of his talk, but I wanted to be sure (because I know what having epistemological standards means). A free market economy (or whatever disparaging name he'd rather give it) is not without its faults, but his 100+year-old Marxist revolutionary rhetoric doesn't help at all. The fact that he's earning over $350,000 in this "Time of Fascist Tyranny" tells us more than his entire 40-minute talk does. While on the topics of freedom, and the human spirit, and open discussion, and the free marketplace of ideas, let's see if my little bit of reasonable criticism is allowed to appear in this forum! The comment section at the moment is oddly uniform in its praise of Giroux, so I'm guessing my dissent won't make the cut -- which, ironically, will confirm a suspicion I have about the true nature of this "Time of Fascist Tyranny"!

    Look, I hate to be that person but honestly, I can say this. People don't care because the people who screech the loudest about this don't act in a way that backs up their words. You can have people like Gretta Tunberg, and other rich people say "We need action on climate change"..... And that's all well and good. ....But. The way that these same people act, buying multi million dollar beach front property that they themselves say will be underwater in x amount of years, also taking yachts, private planes, driving combustion cars, and having planes to transport those combustion cars, show entirely to most if not everyone who sees the issue, that those screaming about it, are full of it. They're shown as liars. And for all intents and purposes, it's believed that they are liars. You can say "data shows this, that or the other" or "scientists say this that or the other" but at the end of the day. The regular person who does not know, does not care, only sees that these people who are the faces of the movement, are acting in a directly different measure to what they preach.

    I wonder how much of this is intended for homeschooling parents rather than professional teachers. That would explain things like the John Adams/president project if it's meant to be for a small group of children rather than an entire traditional classroom. Most homeschooling parents do not have a formal educational background, and as a result many look for pre-made lesson plans & curricula made by professionals (or those claiming to be). Like you said towards the start of the video, a good lesson plan is something anyone can pick up and use - that's even more important in a homeschooling environment. Some of that material is pretty well-done, but others are even worse than this. The average homeschooling parent wouldn't know what Bloom verbs are or that “appreciate” isn't one of them, but they might think this looks like professional teachers' lesson plans and use it because of that.

    To me, viewed from the outside even if i agree in principle with the second amendment as a good and desirable right in paper, we humans are complicated messy things and ideals dont always translate properly to reality. What do i mean by this? I mean that over 20-30-45 years of owning a gun you only need 1 mistake. Not even a bad decision. You accidentally leave a gun accessible to your kid and thats it. You snap, depression, your wife cheats whatever and even in absence of previous psychological issues you have a gun at your disposal. Allowing you to make a mistake you wouldnt be able to otherwise. Your gun gets stolen. Policemen are more alert and prone to shoot than in other countries BECAUSE citizens have guns, and you could die at a bad encounter with them.. There are infinite possible ways to die or harm due to guns availability that are just impossible to predict even with the strictest tests that even if i could say yes, the second amendment is commendable in what it tries to achieve, the risks and harm are just completely disproportionate.

    How would that work for nicknames? My name Christiaan van Schalkwyk was seldom used. The nicknames that most kids and teachers knew were: Chris Skallas Skallie (pronounced Skull Lee which became my gaming name) Ballas (Afrikaans for bolox and rhymes with Skallas which was one of my favourite names.) Ballie (rhymes with Skallie often used for an old man) Apie (monkey) Then I had a few that was more temporary and not used so widely. That list basically stuck at least 9 years of school and into uni. I would not have liked it if my parents had to agree to any of these names, though I think my dad knew them. I think that my parents wouldn't even have known what to fill in.

  • @xane3767
    @xane3767 Před měsícem

    Old stream, but... when you started talking about how kids might actually react to this stuff, I started thinking of all those memes about "the mitochondria is the powerhouse of the cell". Teens and tweens are well aware of the poor pedagogy they're drowning in! They want to learn things that are useful and interesting, but they're presented with key phrases to memorize. The memes I've seen lean towards writing off these subjects entirely - because all these lessons do is convince kids that there's nothing worth learning, that the whole field is boring and stupid. At worst, this can lead to a sort of anti-intellectualism, writing off people with knowledge... But as you also pointed out, there's a niche here for better educators. Kids _love_ catching their teachers out on mistakes! I mean, can you imagine the giggles in an 8th-grade classroom when that one nerdy kid points out that John Quincy Adams was the _6th_ president, actually? (hell, some of these classrooms are gonna have big posters listing every president, and bored students tend to look at anything but the teacher...) Seriously. Can you imagine a better pitch to a middle-school class than "dunk on your teachers by knowing more than they do?" Or, if you're the teacher forced to show these videos in class... "want me to explain why this is stupid?" That thrill of seeing Prager's BS torn apart - they can have it live! Either way, nobody is falling down the PragerU rabbithole because their least favorite teacher made them watch a video of some lady reading a children's book, then handed out a braindead worksheet. And if you happen to be a cool middle-school English teacher... maybe have everyone read The Strange Case of Origami Yoda. Then the other books, where the kids have to fight back against their new test-prep curriculum consisting mostly of terrible, mind-numbing videos giving the answers to equally terrible worksheets. I'm sure Darth Prager would disapprove.

    Maybe someone has already mentioned this but I want to point out that cueing is not about guessing because a child looks at a picture. That's a misconception. Also, visual information is not when a child is looking at the pictures. It's when the child is processing how words look. I think this science of reading movement is political propaganda. Human beings process text thru meaning, structure and visual information. That's a fact. It's not about fulfilling an agenda to force children how to become readers by dissecting words into unrealistic syllables, or parts. Interesting video until the speaker began what seemed like a political rant against conservatives.

    Everything you are saying is pure garbage. This man is a left wing lunatic. The state itself is our biggest problem and you are part of the state. Without the current state apparatus you would not have a job. You are supposed to be a teacher but you don't realize the the fart right and left are the same? All government is authoritarian. We don't need teachers of pedagogy or "intellectuals" who push this and critical theory. We must remember state education is brainwashing and no one needs it. We don't need better schools, we need to get rid of the entire system. And why do you keep talking about white supremacy? How many times do you need to mention that? Why don't you critique Israel with the same lens you view America. You are right, genocide does not only exist in the past, it is happening right now in Palestine. 5 points against pedagogy- Critical pedagogy aims to challenge traditional educational practices and promote social justice, it often falls short in several key areas. Firstly, its overemphasis on power dynamics and oppression can lead to an overly politicized classroom environment, where education becomes a platform for advancing ideological agendas rather than fostering genuine learning and critical thinking. This can result in a biased presentation of information and stifled intellectual diversity. Secondly, critical pedagogy's focus on group identity and collective rights may overshadow the importance of individual agency and responsibility. By framing educational experiences primarily in terms of oppressor-oppressed dichotomies, critical pedagogy risks perpetuating a victim mentality among students and inhibiting their ability to develop resilience and problem-solving skills. Thirdly, the rejection of objective truth and promotion of subjective perspectives in critical pedagogy can undermine academic rigor and scholarly inquiry. By prioritizing personal experiences and subjective interpretations over empirical evidence and logical reasoning, critical pedagogy may hinder students' ability to engage critically with complex issues and develop a nuanced understanding of the world. Furthermore, critical pedagogy's tendency to prioritize social justice outcomes over educational outcomes may result in a neglect of academic standards and essential skills development. While it is important to address social inequalities within education, this should not come at the expense of academic excellence and the cultivation of essential competencies needed for success in various fields. Lastly, critical pedagogy's promotion of dialogue and collaboration among students and educators may inadvertently suppress dissenting voices and alternative perspectives. In an environment where certain viewpoints are privileged over others based on their alignment with critical pedagogical principles, genuine intellectual exchange and open-minded inquiry may be stifled.

    So your problems with Teach Like a Champion seem to be: 1. Students work hard at what seems like boring work. 2. There's no collaboration or student voice on how or what they learn. 3. Students listen to others and do what they're asked by the teacher. 4. Students work quickly in timed portions. 5. The language Lemov uses makes you uncomfortable. None of these really seem that bad to me. I would love to see a filmed example of what you think an ideal classroom should look like.

    Watching through right now while I'm home sick - I play a variation of mafia/werewolf with my students in my history lessons about the German Democratic Republic called "Stasi". There are 2 Stasi agents and in the night cycle they can imprison one of the citizens, or make them an informal "mitarbeiter". During the day phase everyone makes accusations about who the Stasi are. There is no mechanic for them to capture a Stasi agent. So normally the Stasi arrest the most vociferous anti-state agitator. Eventually the students learn to stay quiet, and the lesson is that there aren't simple recourses to oppressive state power beyond complying, being oppressed, or staying quiet.

I have another game I play called "Kapital und Arbeiter" that is meant to sort of convey why socialism would have been appealing to European workers, and why the capitalist would have fought against it, and there's a similar mini-game like "werewolf". BUT the imprisoned communist is able to smuggle out manifestos to rally workers to his cause.

I'm trying to do a solarpunk idea and while I am not someone who likes presenting pure utopias the solarpunk societies are trying their best to really change, but one of the things that was non-negotiable was that it had to not happen after a hard-reset apocalypse and it has to be post-capitalist and the closest thing I can think is that there is a required amount of raw GDP that has to be produced but they use automation, better educational practices, and syndicalized unions, and a robust system of accolades, recognition, and community awards based on progress. And even if the apocalypse is around the corner, apocalypse is only a revelation. The apocalypse is never the end.

    Fighting the future is a very wrong statement.. the more correct term is a bright and ecological future

    If you really look at how People thrive and live its not been much better.. the Old romantic dream of 1800-1900 or earlier was totally wrong.. it was harsh unfair and no chance for the common people to have any influence.. its been evolving in the right direction but we are still to focus to growth without limits.. I do not believe in the rural utopia but a balance and mix .. where technology goes hand in hand with a sensible use of resources.. f

    Fredrick Douglas supported a radical idea at the time which was ending slavery but he wanted Congress to approve the 13th amendment including other amendments that guarentee further rights to former slaves including rights to vote, property etc. By contrast John Brown supported violence to bring about the liberation of slaves by slaves taking matters into their own hands and that through his actions it would inspire a slave revolt across the south violently ending the practice similar to what Nat turners slave rebellion tried to do. Abolition had different points of view on how to bring about the ending of slavery in America but while Fredrick Douglas disliked Americas governmental institutions he still believed that the government itself is the only practical way to bring about change since he pushed Abraham Lincoln to adopt the emancipation proclamation quickly including the congressional amendments to the constitution to guarentee rights to former slaves. What these people in the video are forgetting is what Fredrick Douglas did because he can throw shade at Americas government all he wanted in his speeches but what he did was use the government as a means to end slavery which is less radical than John Browns tear slavery down through violence. The people on this panel are looking at what Fredrick Douglas says and ignoring what he did or wanted to do in actual history.
