  • People often ask me about the curtains I made for my work room - acres of postage stamp blocks! Well, I am giving my back porch a makeover and so I need more postage stamp curtains! Here is the full tutorial from start to finish! I hope you enjoy making this block but don't feel you have to make as much as this!
I will show you the curtains once they are hung and the Porch Project is finished!

    Dearest Kate,
I am so blessed I have found your channel. I have learned so much from you. I have silently been watching and finally subscribed to the channel. For the last 3 weeks, my children and I have been binge watching all your old videos. This weekend we watched the series you did on “mom’s quilts.” I don’t think I have cried as much as I did watching it. What a beautiful legacy your mom left for you!! What a beautiful job you did finishing her work. They were all simply stunning!! ❤ My name is Misty Dutton and I am the momma of 12 kids, for the state of Ohio in the United States. 11 girls 1 boy. I see a lot of myself in you. I love seeing you excited about a project! I get the same way! Anyway sorry for the long post, just wanted to say I love your channel and all the great things you are doing! You are such a blessing to us all. I hope you have a blessed week. We will be in touch soon. Blessings from Ohio❤

I like that...."I can do it, I know I can." I had to change a flat tire on my car. First time with this car. The tire is up under the back end, and I had never had to change one like that. It defeated me for a while, but then I just decided, that I could do it, so armed with the not so easy instruction manual, I persevered, and changed the tire! The tire man couldn't believe I did it by myself.

Hands up - I guessed pink as well. Don't forget gardening, your family, your cooking, decorating and so much more. I think being able to learn and enjoy many different things indicates intelligence, as does an interest in the world around us - science is my addiction but there are so many interesting things in the world. I watch a fellow in Florida make old fashioned candies - the ones with the picture in the middle - I'll never make candy but it's fun to see how he does it. Your interests are part of your charm. I'd be bored if you only did one thing. Today (July 4) I saw a photo of the Queen wishing us a Happy Treason day for our Independence day. She called us Peasants. It made me laugh because she's entirely too polite to say such a thing in public. I did like the video of her interacting with American tourists who didn't recognize her, but asked her to photograph them with her assistant because he had actually met the Queen! LOL Lots of interesting things in the world and thanks to the Internet, we can meet lovely people all over and learn many new things.

I've learned that there are a few ways to call your scraps. Anything under 10 inches square and under is called cabbage. And I decided that strips and small squares must be coleslaw! Coleslaw can be used to stuff pillows or 🧸! In other words, a cat cushion can be made with cabbage and stuffed with coleslaw.

I've wondered about those curtains and and am significantly pleased to hear how you came to put them together. I love them... and they clearly reflect you! I love how you don't let anything go to waste. As you said you'll be doing something with the small scrap strips from the curtains project, I thought of pillow covers. If you had those curtains in a bedroom or living room, it would be lovely to have just a couple of pillows covered in the same design. 3 or 4 might be too many, but 1 to 2 would add just the right touch for cohesion. I'm eager to see what you decide to do with the scraps!

Hello Kate. Just finished watching your postage stamp quilt. Knowing how much you enjoy your birds in the garden, I have a tip for you to help birds in general, make their nests. I keep an empty tissue box by my machine and when I cut stray pieces of thread, I just keep them on the box. Come spring time I set the box on my patio and watch the birds land and pick pieces of thread for their nests. Love watching you show. Keep up the good work. I have had this comment from someone in the past as well. While it wasn't my mother, it still got to me. But I too love the process of so many things, so finishing them is lovely, but like losing am old friend! The only thing that stresses my making mind out is if I have to do something on a timetable. It actually makes me take longer to finish these things ad they have a negative connotation to them then and I don't enjoy the making process. I've learned with my grandchildren to make things a lot larger so I don't have to get stressed it's not going too for them by the time I finish. My kids are getting used to how I work now they are adults! Enjoy your makes!

Hi Kate, I’ve not been on the limegreen sofa for a while. I lost all my enthusiasm following the death of my beloved mother in law on 30 December this year. I was surprised that when you asked what colour the back porch would be, I said pink, then obediently put my hand up. I’m still not ‘right’ I was making a paper pieced hanging of anemones for her. It’s unfinished yet, still in the bag, she was bedbound and she loved the colours. I don’t know when I’ll be able to carry on with it, I spent many happy hours in my front bedroom/sewing room with her, listening to books, chatting, sewing. She was 93, a good age, a very precious friend. That project just has to wait until I’m ready. Some things, there’s no rushing them. Take care xxx

I admire those of you that can keep several projects going. I used to try, but ended up not getting them done when I had hoped, if at all, when our girls were young, and I was working.
So, I just ditched some hobbies, and mainly do papercrafting and quilting/sewing. Finished my last cross stitch kit last summer. I put my papercrafting away for awhile, since boxes of fabric scraps were haunting me. I've wanted to try EPP, since I have a machine now that will cut the hexagons quickly. I am arranging the hexies into diamond motifs, some with 4 (2 different fabrics), and some with 9 that have a center surrounded by a different fabric. Just letting my scraps tell me what to do. I just cut them into 2 1/2" squares, and wrap each cardstock hexie, basting on the back. No trimming into hexagons shapes at all. I'm not even planning on removing the basting. I can pop out the cardstock hexies easily since I punched holes in the centers to insert my blunt scissors and just pull them out.☺️
I am also repairing a quilt for our daughter and SIL. I hope to have that nearly finished by the time I go for ten days to pet/house sit while they are on their longer vacation. I will take my extra scraps I had leftover from making the quilt 16 years ago. It has seen a lot of loving, and a lot of laundering.😊 Both that, and my hexie project will go with me, and I hope to be able to leave the fully repaired quilt when I come back home.😊

I find I tell fewer and fewer people what I am doing as they don't seem to "get it". I asked one of my neighbors what she did for a hobby and she said "nothing". maybe watched an occasional thing on the TV. I take care of my husband who is ill and in a wheelchair. I love to cook and try new recipes, I sew (clothing, toys, quilts and small quilted projects) , I knit, crochet, needlepoint, embroider, cross stitch, refinish furniture, upholster, paint (acrylics and watercolors), keep house, shop, lots of gardening (I am currently hardscaping a walking path around the house and garden)...but I am never ever bored. Oh Kate I'm right there with you..my husband ask why don't I finish a project before I start another one...silly what fun is that. My favorite seat in my house is in front of my sewing machine. I also love hand sewing and knitting. Love taking that outside and knitting or hand sewing. So Kate that's why the LGS survives.

I know this was a year ago, but I wanted to tell you, I often stop watching videos because the person is telling viewers how they use this or that product to make it a faster project, even though the end result doesn't look so good.
I enjoy the process, sometimes I get to the end and, yes there's satisfaction that it's finished, it looks the way I wanted it to. But I also feel a little flat, it's done, finished, almost like a goodbye.
So I too have a butterfly mind, knitting sewing, hand and machine, and quite a bit more, just to enjoy the journey ❤

Been a long tough last week and a half, then I found Kate's new video last night. Decided to watch today after a good night's rest. So glad I did. I too work like you Kate. The things I do bring me much joy. Thank you for sharing what brings you joy. Many of us enjoy the same things. I still love your curtains, too. Maybe I should do the same and make a lap quilt for the porch swing. Hmmm....

YES! Never feel bad about cutting off a video you don‘t enjoy, or possibly just aren‘t in the right headspace for. Either save it for later, or skip ahead until the last seconds and let it finish (it‘s important for the algorithm… aka determines whether the specific creator is recommended to others). =)

I approach my "projects" like I do my reading. I have several, sometimes as many as 5, book that I'm in the process of reading. I have one on my bike, one at my bed stand, one at the sofa, and a couple more scattered here and there...........Mostly because I have different moods and opportunities. My projects take on a similar vision. So , Kate, you're not out of sorts with the way that you do things. Makes perfect sense to me..........lol lol lol. I LOVE that you involve all of us in whatEVER project you're currently working on. It's inspiring. Blessings to you from the New Hampshire/Vermont border, USA.

Dear Kate. I am delighted to hear that you like having several projects on the go at any one time! I have always berated myself for being so butterfly with things which, I think, stops me actually completing them. I will now work on changing my mindset to embrace my scatterbrain and see if it will help to get something finished. Hugs, lovely lady. Kx

Your leisurely habit of doing the big projects is really so relaxing and a joy to participate in. Makes for good viewing :) As you often remind us, these are not tutorials that viewers can watch in 27 minutes and know how to do a quilt. It's a delight to make the quilt/curtain/jacket/sweater with you, over real time. I'm spinning new wool for a jumper right now, just beginning. There is joy in the long process, and more reward.

Love you Kate, and your ideas! I’ve loved your curtains from the first time I saw them. One day watching your video, you were sitting on your sofa with a quilt draped over the back. I got out my scraps and adding machine tape and started sewing away and away and away till I had enough to start adding a one and a half inch solid color sashing strip, also making it multicolored. I made four pairs and put finished borders all around. I have them in my sewing room with clip hooks that slide on a rod. I love the light shing through and get lots of great comments on them, thank you!,

I’m so glad you have given us instructions on your lovely “mosaic tile” curtains which I have admired. I would have cut up small 2” squares and tediously sewn them together !! What a lot of unnecessary work on my part. So, thank you. I plan on starting mine soon. You have another video I’ve seen on the “stained glass” piecing with the French seams. I can’t wait to do those too. So,so pretty. Your videos are so calming. I really enjoy them.

I can identify SO STRONGLY with the way you like to work, it has been lovely for me to watch you create all the things, making use of resources on hand, and exploring so many different crafts and interests. I also have loads of projects going all at once, in many different stages of completion, in many different areas of interest. I have never before come across someone who so readily embraces that as the valid and productive way to work. your work space is organized and colorful and inviting. I am going to love following along with you and learning and creating whatever and whenever the spirit moves. -Jeanne D
