One lesson I learned was to snap a ton of photos when I disassemble anything. These compensate for my ageing memory. The task of splitting these tractors maybe why they give them to you Warren.
Thank you for sharing honestly with us. Everyone makes mistakes, how else do you learn and have grey hair. Every good mechanic has had a few bolts held in their teeth a flashlight in the mouth and several liters of oil and other petroleum passed through his own system ! success is measured not by your mistakes but by your ability to rectify them. Impressed with how you manage to make sense of the manuals, which make things as clear as mud with all the alternative models written into one block of text rather than a section for each.
especially in a computerized format where it can be tabbed to the separate models, but I can see why in a paper format it is mixed, to thin out a manual and saves cost.
The computer versions are offern worse Theyre usually just photo copied directly into a pdf But you can't skip pages and use the contents pages properly
It takes a strong person to admitted they screwed up, and you are a strong person. We all mess up, but when you admitt in open and are willing to share the rebuilding like you have done says a lot about his character. We need more people like you in our country today. Stay safe!
Doing go back work is a tough thing to do. I commend you for sharing. At times I find myself getting frustrated when trying to follow directions on a laptop screen when working on machinery. Often I'll print out the applicable shop manual pages, put it on a clip board, and check things off as I go. Good Work Warren, glad you got the tractor back together.
Thanks Warren, good job troubleshooting the error and sticking with it without all your pride getting in the way. Sometimes I have to take a couple of steps back and regroup to get my mind back to fixing and not becoming a victim in a wtf did you do now game; especially when working by yourself. So many fixers cannot get past that personal mountain, that is the difference in being good at what you do and knowing you are without folks telling you. I hate when folks try to put me on a pedestal; I am no different than they are I just know how due diligence works in the things I enjoy doing and keeps you going over the lumps and bumps that happen. It is also good to hear from folks with similar experiences and what worked for them. Looks like you have a team Warren out there with your channel... Take care of you and yours.

First off I'd like to take the time to thank you Warren. Now I'll tell you why. My son once asked me for words of wisdom when he was ready to get out on his own. The essence of which you do naturally. In short my words were "Don't stop moving or trying, the only true sin is to stay stangnet. ... The only time we learn is when we make mistakes so we should learn form them do not be embarrassed nor proud of them but acknowledged them and adjust accordingly." I have heard and seen you preach and live by a similar message. Good on ya bud. "O God it's hard to be humble when you're perfect in every way!" As Mac Davis would say. Seen the video and had to pull myself away from working on the roof to tell you thanks for shearing your education, experience and for showing others there is more to being a good human then being slightly embarrassed by an innocent mistake. Want to stay and say more but I too have to get moving again and get back to work on the roof.
Yep warren I also agree you have it, good on you for showing all the trouble it caused you it takes a true mechanic and man to do that and identify his failure which you did, it’s so easy for things to happen, I know of other trans that bearing with the retainer ring does go around the other way ( certain CAT loader trans are like that ) anyway warren a good recovery and a job well done.
As Warren says at 16:00, "I'm going to read the directions here, okay?" I admire this guy so much for being willing to take on crazy repair work he's never done before. I could never bill the hours it would take me to figure this stuff out. I'm glad there are some talented guys out there. Not as many in this country as there used to be, but there are still a few. I wonder if my old buddy Leon Morphew is watching this.
A job like that always feels so good when you start it up and it works like it's supposed to. I'm glad for you Warren, I know what it's like. What counts is the bottom line, The customer will get his tractor back working like it did when it was new and he'll be happy.
Glad you are getting it done. Nothing like finally getting a headache done. I had a Duramax that fought me like that. I was so glad to get it out of my shop. Glad to know I am not the only one that has machines fight you. Keep up the good work and I enjoy following your channel.
Atta boy ! Perseverance and determination will win in the end. I once had to take a clutch apart 3 times on a dodge 4x4 because the new disc was a few thousands larger than the stepped flywheel . But it seemed to fit perfectly when assembling. But the disc wasn't sitting flush on the flywheel so I couldn't get it to engage correctly. End up getting oem disc and it fixed the problem . We wrench , we learn . Great job figuring it out 👍😎

Yeah, vertical assembly is the way to go. That’s how I did it on bench work. Just building a component on a steel table with a hole in the middle. In your case, the housing is the table.
So glad you sorted it out. Kind of made it clear how it all fits in the tractor when you pointed out the holes that the feed tubes connect with from the valve body. Also at about 37 minutes when you are standing next to the back tyre and its as tall as you are and you are holding the clutch discs in your hand. I know its all down to torque multiplication but they still dont look big enough to drive the thing. Once again , great that its fixed.
It sucks when you screw up, but sure is satisfying to find what you did wrong instead of guessing. Several years ago we split my son’s agco 175 with front wheel assist because the shift fork came apart. We could not get it back together, finally figured out the splines on the clutches for front assist drive were not lining up. Ugh. I worked for a small tractor shop in high school, learned a lot. Fun times

Them goofy case’s I did a 1070 a long time ago. No wonder case bought IH. Tenico needed someone that had a real Powershift. You did a great job I had to take that 1070 apart 4 times before I figure it out.

In our part of the country those old power shift cases have 0 resale. Because of that stupid design. Most have been parted for the engines to use in dozers or older case tractors. I put a 504 out of a powershift in a an 1175 straight 8sp .To bad case ih didn't continue the ih 88 series much better design. I have to print manuals so I can refer to the pages side by side. I can't stand to try to do that on the computer . I get so frustrated. Age I guess. I have alot of respect for you even taking on that job. Thanks for the content.
This makes me want to be REALLY kind to my one remaining gear drive big frame tractor. When every other power shift and quad range takes a dump at once around here I’ll be left with the old trusty International.
I've done exactly 1 of those powershift units in my life, and I swore I would *NEVER* do another one! What a royal pain in the ass these things are to assemble (correctly). Between the timing marks, home-made jigs and what not to hold everything in place, I had mine apart and together no less than 4 or 5 times before it finally worked right.😝 I'm pretty well convinced that some poor mechanic at Case was sleeping with an engineer's wife, and this was how the engineer got his revenge.😤 Those powershifts are great when they work right, but it seems the old style friction plates were the weak link in most all I've seen. They definitely could have found a better home for the pickup screen on these too, since you can't even get to it without pulling the PTO cover off. Would have probably saved a lot of pumps, drive plates and premature failures due to low pressure. I admire anyone that has the guts to tear into one of these! Great video man.👍
Yeah we all make mistakes. I did one with my tractor and a 2 month old $800 tire. Loading onto my old trl i caught my fender and sliced the sidewall bad. Ran it 8 yrs before first flat. Ive gotten new rims since old ones rusted bad. Went flat twice now. New rims and a boot inside and going strong 11 yrs now
If somebody walked in and said " How do you stand those trains?" You would probably say "what trains?" I know, I grew up 200 yards from the railroad myself. Never heatd 'em Lol. Todd the retired trucker.
I moved to the city from a farm to do my apprenticeship Thought the traffic would annoy me But It sounds just like a distant ocean (we farm on the coast) It was actually the Sunday mornings when it was dead quite that really got me Growing up i just got used to grouling swell all day and night
unfortunately we humans make mistakes , thats being human, but after we figure what the mistake was/is , we learn and SHARE this ! That I am sure is what we call "teaching" and we learn what happen when we make ERRORS . Life learning , now in the end Warren "learned" what was ... not right as to the clutch issue . It is nice to see " what was wrong. Good video !

Sometimes I think engineers put all their worth into coming up with the most complicated SOB on the market….it’s like their coup de grace on the engineering world….
I noticed that you had your flashlight in your mouth...I do that a lot as well, and I put a wrap of gray duct tape around the light at the end. Then when I grip it with my teeth it's not teeth on metal, the tape acts as a "dental" cushion.
Might have been able to use some safety wire and run it through the bolt holes and around the plates, twist it tight, set the assembly in then cut the wire and pull it out through
Was just thinking.....use some wire to hold together. I've done the impossible using wire. Keep a spool on hand and have used for various issues over 69 years. Learned in USN. Being a former submariner, Like duck tape, wire is next in the tool boc.
I always wonder if engineers could simplify a unit like that and still make it strong enough and efficient enough for the application or if it was researched from every direction and this was found to be the only possible way to build it.
"Think that book might be wrong",,, not in this case but iv'e seen it wrong before.. always double check. Ask me why i know. hahaha... but in some cases ... its just hard to read because they write things in a hard way to understand.
Expensive lesson for you but I can see how it happened. Makes sense when you showed it the second time and a good thing you didn't force the problem sooner when you started the tractor and wouldn't operate properly or you would have been replacing the whole thing which would have cost you considerably more. Everybody makes mistakes and it is only the honest who will say so.

Here’s a question When you make a mistake like this for example Do you give up your labour ? I’m asking because I as well and self employed mobile mechanic I recently made a bad diagnostic choice Took aux box off Eaton 18spd Anyway nothing was wrong I resealed it and installed found the real problem repaired it and truck is working again I know what I’m gonna do but I wanted to know your opinion on similar things I will give up my labour to reseal box I had the gaskets so no big deal

In our part of the country those old power shift cases have 0 resale. Because of that stupid design. Most have been parted for the engines to use in dozers or older case tractors. I put a 504 out of a powershift in a an 1175 straight 8sp .To bad case ih didn't continue the ih 88 series much better design. I have to print manuals so I can refer to the pages side by side. I can't stand to try to do that on the computer . I get so frustrated. Age I guess. I have alot of respect for you even taking on that job. Thanks for the content.
This makes me want to be REALLY kind to my one remaining gear drive big frame tractor. When every other power shift and quad range takes a dump at once around here I’ll be left with the old trusty International.
I've done exactly 1 of those powershift units in my life, and I swore I would *NEVER* do another one! What a royal pain in the ass these things are to assemble (correctly). Between the timing marks, home-made jigs and what not to hold everything in place, I had mine apart and together no less than 4 or 5 times before it finally worked right.😝 I'm pretty well convinced that some poor mechanic at Case was sleeping with an engineer's wife, and this was how the engineer got his revenge.😤 Those powershifts are great when they work right, but it seems the old style friction plates were the weak link in most all I've seen. They definitely could have found a better home for the pickup screen on these too, since you can't even get to it without pulling the PTO cover off. Would have probably saved a lot of pumps, drive plates and premature failures due to low pressure. I admire anyone that has the guts to tear into one of these! Great video man.👍

Yeah we all make mistakes. I did one with my tractor and a 2 month old $800 tire. Loading onto my old trl i caught my fender and sliced the sidewall bad. Ran it 8 yrs before first flat. Ive gotten new rims since old ones rusted bad. Went flat twice now. New rims and a boot inside and going strong 11 yrs now

unfortunately we humans make mistakes , thats being human, but after we figure what the mistake was/is , we learn and SHARE this ! That I am sure is what we call "teaching" and we learn what happen when we make ERRORS . Life learning , now in the end Warren "learned" what was ... not right as to the clutch issue . I noticed that you had your flashlight in your mouth...I do that a lot as well, and I put a wrap of gray duct tape around the light at the end. Then when I grip it with my teeth it's not teeth on metal, the tape acts as a "dental" cushion.

Might have been able to use some safety wire and run it through the bolt holes and around the plates, twist it tight, set the assembly in then cut the wire and pull it out through

Was just thinking.....use some wire to hold together. I've done the impossible using wire. Keep a spool on hand and have used for various issues over 69 years. Learned in USN. Being a former submariner, Like duck tape, wire is next in the tool boc.
I always wonder if engineers could simplify a unit like that and still make it strong enough and efficient enough for the application or if it was researched from every direction and this was found to be the only possible way to build it.

Not all technical writers are equal. Every once in a rare while you find some wonderfully clear writing in a technical document though.
True I had manual error mess me up from on a JCB transmission seal .
CAT seems to notify quickly of errors in tech manual.
It happens, I say I’m not perfect and never will be. But there is people that take pride in what they do.
Expensive lesson for you but I can see how it happened. Makes sense when you showed it the second time and a good thing you didn't force the problem sooner when you started the tractor and wouldn't operate properly or you would have been replacing the whole thing which would have cost you considerably more. Everybody makes mistakes and it is only the honest who will say so.

found the real problem repaired it and truck is working again

I ate about 30 hours of labor and a 750 dollar shaft. It was my mistake.
