I flew in from Sydney Australia to Michigan and visited the Mack Brush factory ... I'm retired but I've been using pin stripping brushes and "French" quills since the 60's... I actually have brushes from 1973 in my box...never using dish soap(?). I use motor oil, and really hand work it into the brush and then us Vaseline and flatten out the brush and trim any out of place hairs and store it. The quills haven't seen daylight in almost 48 years ... no joke, I cleaned them with lacquer thinners and re-oiled it... worked just like new. ... to be hones I was truly surprised!

I usually sit and watch Sunday football (Monday here in Sydney) and while doing that, I work motor oil into the brush after I clean with thinners.
My Australian wife who is also an art teacher is helping me set up to do some antiques reverse image (including gold leaf) signs for weddings and some shops... ideas from the time of depression. The local trades school asked me to film the processes for his classes and explain those minor details.
The displays at Mack brush were amazing (going back to day 1) and their brushes are all hand made to this day, they just let us wonder around watching them.
I should mention I spent 9 years Army, including a combat tour in Vietnam (2/502 Infantry, 101st Airborne). Australia asked me to come down under as a teacher in 1979, been here ever since. I do wish back in the day they had those newer style scrolling brushes they offer now ... I bought two small sets of those new ones😀 for my wife and myself.@@villapinstriping

Thanks a lot for this video. I have paint stuck in the ferrule of two of my brushes cause I did not think of oiling them before I started any lines. Thanks again.
No problem :) just make sure to clean well before and after using them. Oil is only for when you aren't using them.

Fortunately I had a brand new liner brush that i wanted to break in. And the roll trick with the pencil is awesome. Its an instant difference

Got my first lettering quill today, I'm glad I saw this video before I dipped it in paint. It doesn't have the goo on it keeping the bristles stiff; in fact it's a bit frayed but maybe that'll work itself out! I'm gonna soak mine in coconut oil and hope that does the trick.

Coconut oil ?.never heard of that one,let use know how it works, my guess is that it will draw all kinds of bugs…
the brushes are coated with hair gel, just soak in hot water and a few drops shampoo. it is water based. DO not dip in laquer thinner , it is VERY HARSH on the hair. use mineral spirits or turpentine after soaking in hot water and shampoo for 10 minutes. lacquer thinner ruins brushes. I make my own brushes and learned this. only use lacquer thinner when absolutely needed Also NEVER PULL on the hairs, PINCH and squeeze. pulling on the hair also ruins brushes. your pulling the hairs loose. these brushes arent usually even glued, the thread just wraps around the ferrule the its epoxy coated.

I am just found you on CZcams and am watching all your videos is chronological order from the beginning to your most recent. I just watched this video (haven’t watched any further videos). When you store your brush when not being used for a week to a few months, do you leave them in your aluminum storage brush box and the brushes still have oil in them? Are they stored with having oil or are they store dry with nothing on the brush hairs?
Completely soaked in oil. Always when not using. Keeps the hairs from drying out

I have a video called "practice board options" that can better explain, but I use glass to practice on. You can get them "shop towels" at any car parts store or Walmart. You can also order them on Amazon.
I'm working on getting a table lathe for wood turning then I think I will try to make me some brushes after squirrel season.... And I'm pretty sure I can get a raccoon tail so wonder if that'll be any good...ty for your tips

Richard - Striping and lettering brushes are made out of squirrel hair but not the squirrels you have access to. The proper hairs come from Russia/North China and are measurably longer than the squirrels you might find. Making a brush is a talent that isn't as simple as aligning and binding the hairs. The natural ends must be perfectly aligned not cut, then the right fullness needs to be achieved to shape the brush body. This is more complicated for striping brushes as the hairs align on an angle. Honestly it takes a minimum of 3 years full time to be qualified to make a brush of sufficient quality. They cost less than 15-20 dollars each so save yourself the effort, order one online and get to striping!
Hey mr. Villa,my new brushes got delivered yesterday so I had to replay this video of yours,good instructions! I wish I new this before I used my first brushes. What I was wondering was you tell about warm water and soap but doenst soap contain some sort of silicon that can create fisheyes in the paint? (I understand you have to wash it out but I still would be affraid it will get into the ferrule) and is there a difference between synthetic brushes and natural hair brushes like squirrel? Thanks again for this video and I hope you can answer my questions.

TheRemyleon I honestly don't know if the soap has silicon or not. The only difference I see between synthetic and natural is how they hold/release the paint differently.. they also require a different amount of reducing. I have a difficult time with fully synthetic brushes. But that's just me

But what I actually ment with the difference between the two sorts of brushes was about the maintenance,do you threat the two differently? Wipe off and thoroughly clean with Lacquer thinner and mineral spirits. Before painting with it.
The oil is only for storing the brushes

How often do you have to do this? Especially with the oil? Is it just the first time? An than clean it with acetone after each use?
I have never cleaned with Acetone personally. I used mineral spirits or paint thinner.
But the oil gets placed on the brushes after each use. Then cleaned off before each use
Yo Villa I got a question for you. Have you ever needed to trim the tip on a scroll striping brush? I have a set of wizard black widows I think a couple could use a slight trim on the tip.
I've only really practiced with sword brushes and never quite liked these brushes. Also wanting a Kafka what size would you recommend.
Kafka #1 for sure.
I've never trimmed a scroller. I have had a few "funny ones" before. Trimming never helped. I just had to move onto something else.
But it never hurts to try.

Tim Foster Mack brush sells official brush oil. I'd look up their website an grab some of that. So you won't worrie about using the "wrong stuff"

If you’re not going to paint with the brushes the day you prep them do you just leave the brushes with the oil they soaked? Or do you just wipe off the oil and put them away? Or do you clean them with lacquer thinner and mineral spirit?
The idea behind the oil is to soak them and leave them soaked in oil when you're not using them. The oil I only so the brushes don't dry out.

My brush oil is made especially to nurture the natural hair that are in them.
Rule is never put an oil based paint brush in water…the sizing is best removed with hardware store lacquer thinner, then spirits,then in my oil.
Would I use this same process with the scroller brushes? Just picked up a #3 nd #6
@@thatmobsta yes, any natural hair brush would benefit from an oil bath when not in use, I dip the hair ,gently squeeze out the excess oil and lay them flat.

Neatsfoot oil is the best option. Mineral oil works too. Old timers use motor oil. It's kind of a point of controversy...

Yes. They are good. I would highly recommend a (Mack 10 series Number 00) or a (kafka scroller #3)

@@potror9289 "Better" is an opinion that only the person using it can make. They are all high quality brushes. Everyone has a different opinion on which one they like "better".... It's like Pepsi vs Coke or Ford vs Chevy.
The sizes usually go from smallest to biggest like ( 0000,000,00,0,1,2)
Size #00 just happens to be the middle one. And usually most recommend

Now. Since saying that I can answer somewhat clearly.
You should try to find brush oil from companies like (Mack brush, Steve Kafka or Von Von Dago) just google them.
But many different pinstripers use many different products such as mineral oil, neatfoot oil, transmission fluid, motor oil, lard, baby oil among other stuff

@@villapinstriping Well, my opinion is no good, I'm trying to buy a nice brush for touch up work when we make a minor scratch on a customers car upon reassembly. The painter came here, sanded with 1500 used brush like yours and made it perfect. Next day a drop of clear. I'm trying to buy a brush, I'm TOTALLY confused. They make a million of these brushes, maybe more. So many numbers so many choices, different sizes different types, different names...I give up. What ever I buy will be wrong. Then...the brush has to be PREPPED! I'll screw that up for sure. How could buying a damn brush be so complicated, THEN you can't even USE it without fixing it up. Never mind the email. I'll leave the brush work to you guys. I'll just continue to build Panteras for customers & try as I might, keep the scratches to a minimum. :-(

@@jacksharkey2010 not rocket science. Kafka #3 or an Xcaliber and wash it out and oil. Then in a couple of days clean it with lacquer thinner. If you are putting it under clear, use House of Color Pinstriping paint (or in your case base coat with reducer/hardener) so NO Mineral Spirits.
