that surprise has been there for 50. I drive both today..a 2016 gmc and a 96 with a 5 speed.. 305. I'd rather put a king pin on my 96. I am the "welder steel guy" for family vehicles.. I guess i do have some cheating involved, but I digress.

6.0 is an insane engine that doesn’t get nearly enough respect or reputation for what it does. It’s just as reliable as the Chevy 350 and makes more power. Much more power.

The gas saves you 10k dollars when purchasing this truck and if you're towing less than 14k and not doing it for a job every day it is great. This motor will last forever. I've towed an 11k fifth wheel about 1-2 weekends a month all over for a year now with this gasser. Love this truck. If you're driving these extreme inclines, at altitude, with the max towing weight every day, or just have the excess cash, you might want the diesel.

+Bunz21 I've been reading that Ford's new engine might be part of the modular family. If that's the case, why can't GM build a V8 using the Gen V small-block? They were making aluminum 7.0L engines, and 7.4L engines with CGI in the LS family, so why not make something 7.0+ liters in displacement but using a CGI version of the Gen V engine small- block? Big-blocks would be awesome, but I understand the cost of having two different blocks.

It's a long bed so I can put whole sheets of plywood and close the tailgate. I had 12 hardipanels loaded and it only squat like half an inch. The extra cab is roomy I can put all my tools in the back even my compressor. From now on im sticking to cheby 3/4 ton trucks and vans. When my truck dies I'll get a newer 2500hd gas. This is great information. I have noticed on newer trucks, even with a 6 speed transmission, the first to second and second to third gear shifts have way too much space between them. for towing they should make the ratios closer together, but then make the last couple gears spaced wide for empty cruising. Do you know why they do this? I have a 2016 F150 and that's my only thing I would change is the first three gears are very long and set up to keep the truck under about 2,000 rpm. Doesn't seem like fuel economy in an HD truck should be to the detriment of good towing.

The Bridge is a formula, and uses several variables, such as kingpin to the center of the rear axle group, spread within an axle group, the number of axle groups. It isn't calculated based on measuring the load itself but on how it affects the overall truck and trailer. Kent is wrong is saying this load has a "very big bridge".

I just bought a 2018 Chevy 2500hd LT 4x4 double cab. I get 15 to 15.5mpg back and forth to work religiously. And around town not much stop and go at 45mph I'll get around 17 to 18mpg. That big front end kills the highway miles. But my recent road trip down to valley here in Arizona I got 19mpg once I hit Phoenix that's at 150 miles one way. But mostly down hill. On the way back up I got 14.5 on the gas up hill. Average would put me at 16.7ish mpg. It's does alot Better then I thought it would.

Y’all are saying it’s a work truck. That meaning it’s a WT? Looks awesome with the LTZ wheels. We run a crew cab wt with the 6.0. The 2017 is a little more sluggish than the 2012 it replaced. We still have the 2012 and it’s still running strong with 220k on it. Stock they’re all a little on the weak side but after all it isn’t the flagship power plant but with a tune it really wakes up. The new WTs are surprisingly comfortable and ride great.

pretty good test for this chevy, first off though the power brakes running off the power steering pump has been around at least since 94, my 2500 suburban with the 454 had it. anyway, i think that transmission gear ratio is just bad in these trucks. my work van is a 2012 chevy 3500 express with the same motor ( i believe) loaded down with all our crap it came in at around 9500 pounds, it is always bogging down between gears or it is running to the redline just like in this video, granted not 5500 rpm like this one. i will always only own chevy trucks, but they really need to do something different with these. i have had a 2000 3500 gas 454 and currently have a 2001 3500 lb7 diesel dually and neither of these would of had the bogging down issues that this truck had, and thats with the 4 speed in the gas and 5 in the diesel. i have even towed my 1988 26 foot trailer over that same route on i70 and it never acted like this truck did.

Also, the new 6.7L Power Stroke was having turbo and def problems. So, I told myself, for the 5 times I tow heavy a year, the 6.2L gas will work just fine. Plus, it will save me a boat load of money. I bought reliability over power.

I would like to see the gas HD trucks compared more closely with half tons. I think the diesel is the way to go if towing heavy, but I think a lot of weekenders are towing weights that are right in between 1/2 and 3/4s. Do you buy a half ton that is better for day to day and stress it more for towing or do you buy a 3/4 gas that isn't as good for commuting but is better suited for towing? How do the gas HDs tow closer to the 6-9k lb range?

I'm a Mopar guy but honestly for that weight, grade, and altitude once they are up there a ways, that's not bad really for a NA gas V8 that's original dates back to over a decade ago. It's obviously not a close-ratio 6-speed seeing how many RPM's were lost dropping gears -- what was the final drive ratio on that truck? (I missed it if they said it) Gearing is noticeably closer on new 8-spd and 10-spd trannies. 6-speeds will suffice in an occasional tow vehicle (especially at that price). They still make the old 4-spds look like childs' play.

The 6.0's specs don't quiet stack up to the Ford 6.2 or Ram 6.4 but unlike those two motors the GM motor will still be running in 10 years. Diesels are awesome for rich guys and heavy hauling but the reliability and maintenance problems you encounter with the modern diesels make the gas trucks a very viable option for guys like me that never tow anything but want the looks of a 3/4 ton.

I'm just saying that the 6.0 and the 5.3 engines have been proven to be basically indestructible. By the "has 345k miles on it" comment, I'd guessing you've got a "slightly older" that maybe doesn't ride as nice as the newer ones, but I'm shopping around for my first truck so I wanted to confirm and see if you had any other feedback to share (especially if it would apply to a newer year-model)? I'm seriously considering a Diesel Dually so I can go all the way on a 5th wheel and never worry that I can't get somewhere because I went cheap on the truck, but I also don't want to spend $75k to get what I want OR go cheap when a bit more would have really helped.
Anyone else with helpful advice/facts, I'll all ears. I have family that works for GM so I'll be hung if I buy anything else (on top of NOT getting the GM family price I get otherwise), but I really want tech/features I don't see in the Chevy and I like the style of Ford and Dodge more. To boot, the Dodge mega-cab would be HUGE for us if I do end up hauling around the fmaily (2 adults, 3 kids) and have to live in the truck for days while driving because we will be able to keep SO much more accessible (food, changes of clothes, entertainment, blankets for naps, etc..).
Said another way, the goal is a truck I can use to travel the family with, while pulling a 5th wheel (with everything we'll be living with). This will also be my daily vehicle when not traveling and I'm a project guy so this truck will be busy and likely end up pulling other (lighter) loads regulalry.
