    I just spent weeks trying to fix a 71 Evinrude 4HP which has an idle stall problem. I replaced the coils (twice), points, condensers, and wires. I even swapped flywheels. I narrowed the problem down to loosing spark on the bottom cylinder which was intermittently either strong or absent. After watching one of your videos, I decided to try shrink tube and dielectric grease on the coil connection. This immediately fixed the problem. The motor idles around 600 rpm without stalling as opposed to around 1,400 RPM before. Thank you for the good advice. In the future, I'm never going to install a coil without heat shrink.

      I'm glad that helped you out. Great to hear you got your motor running well again. I have had very good luck with the dielectric grease and heat shrink on coils. Thanks for watching!

    Like the HEAT SHRINK over the coil secondary wire. Great idea 👍

    I like the dieelectric idea...Do they still make the 172523 ignition kit? Looks like the 172522 covers them all now, but used to have different condensers for the bigger engines....The darn leads on the new OMC coils tend to be a little too long, this is a delicate/precise operation that has to be right, sometimes the new screws that come with the coils are a tad too long also, hope they have corrected these issues by now...

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 5 lety

      I have had excellent luck using the dielectric grease onnthe spark plug terminals. Even running in the small tank and throwing water all over the back of the engine with the cover off, they never miss a beat.
      I could be wrong but I believe they stopped making the different condensers for the big motors when they stopped making different coils for the big motors. I think the only condensers now are the universal magneto condensers and the Lo-tension condensers. I don't know the capacitance of the big motor condensers though. Could be the same as the Lo-tension condensers. They are about 0.3ufd.
      Yes, the leads are important to take care to keep them routed properly. I always reuse the old coil screws unless they are damaged somehow. I figure they are never torqued enough to damage the screws and they fit and worked at the factory (assuming they are factory screws). I have had some of the coil screws that were a little long and bound up the mag. Hasn't happened in a while though. Thanks for watching Don!

    Awesome video...do you have a video to finish the tune up including the points & condenser for the 1963 5.5 hp. Johnson.

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 2 lety +1

      All but lower unit service, the 5.5 is done the same as this 18hp. Chrysleroutboarddude has a great video of a 55 Johnson 5.5 tune up. That is exactly the same other than your 63 has a fuel pump and uses a single line fuel tank. Thank you and thanks for watching!

    I’m looking to replace some of these parts on my 1953 evinrude super fastwin 15hp, some of the part numbers you have on here come up. Will most of the 50s motors replacement parts fit a 1953? Or do you have some part numbers you’d recommend as far as coils points condensers?

      So I have a 53 fastwin 15hp and for the longest time I thought it was just underpowered for my boat. It would plane out just would hardly get more then 10mph. Well 1 night I was out fishing and heading back to the launch and just out of the blue it all of a sudden started climbing in speed and flattened right out and hit 19.5mph on the graph.
      So I’m curious what would cause that? I just recently ordered new points condensers coils and plug wire. Going to do a full rebuild because I posted on the aomci fb page and those guys said it sounds like an ignition problem.
      It idles great fires up first or 2nd pull and has around 90psi in both cylinders

      There is zero difference mechanically between a 1961 and a 1966 18hp that would affect anything in the kit. The parts are the same. Thanks for watching!

    • @oldjohnnyrude8404
      @oldjohnnyrude8404  Před 5 lety

      There is only one ignition repair kit and one coil still being produced for the OMC Universal Magneto. If you replace the coils with new production BRP Evinrude coils everything will be matched properly. If your old coils are still good and you use the new condensers, I doubt you will notice the difference. The values were never that different anyway.
