We're lucky that we have river rock and quary rock available here, 3/4"- is the standard in the valley in oregon.

Take 10 plus inches of soil out. Hopefully you are through the topsoil. If not, remove until the topsoil is gone (topsoil just doesn’t pack). Then if you are deeper than 12 inches, fill with clay. Pack it, THEN put fabric down. Fabric needs to be buried or it does like what you experienced here. After the fabric, if you even put it down, then put down crusher run or 3-6” rock. Put 4-6” of it down! Then you can start with the gravel. With the base you have created 5he gravel camps now go down and retain a pack of 96% or better. The gravel drains and does not displace when wet, it stays packed. The sand does work its way to the top. For that, you have to maintain the gravel (3/4 to 1”). Maintaining the gravel is working the top 3-4” regularly, depending on weather and use. A blade with scarifiers is the best I find. There are land planes, just a set of harrows,,, lots of opinions out there!. You gotta take care of your gravel. It’s not set & forget. Been doing this for about 50 years now and even at the feedlot with all the trucks & equipment, feed tractors & wagons, then trucks, it stands up. Eventually you have to top it up, but only with maybe 3”. That’s years apart though depending on how well you take care of it & how it gets used.

Boy I would hope people realize you have to remove the top soil, but I guess I should have mentioned it to make it fool-proof

@@doomsdaydiesel - Haha. You would be surprised. Of course I live on the prairie and we are lucky to have 8+ inches of topsoil in many areas. I have seen some areas in the foothills of the Rockies where there is 8+FEET of topsoil. Mist be a bit more challenging there! Haha. They will use 10-12 rubble to start in some of those areas.
