Butker commencement speech spotlights religious war on women's freedom, even Taylor Swift's

  • A commencement speech at conservative Catholic Benedictine College by football kicker Harrison Butker resonated nationally as its anti-diversity, anti-LGBTQ, traditional roles for women themes are seen as encroaching on public life for Americans who in large proportion do not support religion-based rollbacks of social progress. Leah Litman, law professor at the University of Michigan, talks with Alex Wagner about why a speech at a small college became a national flashpoint.

    As a female person who lived through the 60s and 70s era of My Body, My Choice, the last decade has been quite alarming. I highly recommend the book When Abortion was a Crime by Leslie J Reagan to understand why emergency room doctors rejoiced when the Roe v Wade decision made abortion safe and legal.
    On women’s independence: when I was 30, I couldn’t get a credit card in my own name. I HAD to have my husband on the account. He maxed out the card and ran off with a mistress. I had to go through bankruptcy to clear a debt I never wanted - a debt which was only possible because I could NOT have my own line of credit.
    I didn’t need a no fault divorce because my state recognized infidelity as a legitimate reason for divorce, and he had admitted to having multiple dalliances. I fully support no-fault divorce. If one person wants out, they should be allowed to leave, no questions asked.
    We are not property. We are people. We deserve to be paid the same amount for the same work. We deserve to decide what goes on in our own bodies. We deserve to live in safety. We are not a genie you can stuff back into a bottle.

      It's not just sad, but actively very worrying to see from across the pond what's happening in the USA currently, and on so many levels... We may not have the abortion freedoms I'd want here in Germany (it's generally illegal for everyone involved, though the exceptions that make it legal are fairly generously set up), but it's in practice far better than with that Roe v. Wade thing taken down in the USA now. And while there are _some_ occasional attempts to make it worse here as well, there luckily are more attempts to completely decriminalize it.
      And yeah, those lingering inequalities in various (other) areas are... shameful.
      The _only_ thing I _may_ disagree with to some degree, depending on what you meant to refer to, is the same pay for the same work thing. Even if you mean the "cleaned up pay gap" (or whatever it's called in English), I have some issues with it. For example, is the factor taken out that physically smaller people tend to get paid less? Women are physically smaller than men on average, but that factor also affects smaller men, it may just be difficult to remove that variable from the statistics - and that's just one pretty easy example. Negotiation abilities and the role testosterone plays during negotiations play an even bigger role, and I have _zero_ idea how that could be taken into account.
      Maybe the only solution would be to make collective agreements the only legally acceptable type of contract, so personal negaotiation skills and physical attributes (size, body type, looks, ...) and such play no role? No idea how one could make sure that that's actually done _everywhere,_ but it should be easy to enforce in the vast majority of employment contracts.

    • @wolfofthewest8019
      @wolfofthewest8019 Před 17 dny

      @@beck204 The reason women worked in the home for thousands of years is because the home was the center of all economic activity for thousands of years. For most of our history, women were semi-nomadic gatherers. Then we became farmers, and for thousands of years we lived on farms and men working "outside the house" meant "in the fields."
      As economies developed, the home remained the center of economic activity. A silversmith in the 12th century had his shop in his home, often with the front of his house opening to the street, where his wife would sell his wares while he worked smelting and shaping metal.
      But women have worked outside the home as long as such work has been available. There are women in the Bible who support their family by working as servants in the houses of others, and women have been nurses, maids, servants, as well as innkeepers, brewers (for centuries beermaking was done almost entirely by women).
      With industrialization women went to work in factories, operating looms and other machinery. With every new technological development, women have been needed in the workforce. And women have needed to be in workforce. For most of recorded history only the elite could afford to support women who had no useful employment. Princesses are not the norm.
      In the 1950s, it became possible for working class men to finally provide their wives lives of luxury. The last 50 years haven't been the beginning of women working, it has been a battle between the aristocrats and the commoners. The powers that rule the material world do not want working men to be able to treat their wives as queens, lest they mistake themselves for kings.

      Benedictine College is where wealthy Catholic families send their daughters to get an education and meet a husband. Many of those women are doing exactly what their parents want.
      Also, I'd really like you to stop and consider what you're implying. Do you really believe a woman who gets an education and does not pursue a career in the market is wasting her education? Is accumulating wealth the only reason to get an education?
      Education is a good on its own, regardless of whether it is put to some utilitarian purpose. Everyone benefits from an education, even if it is just in being able to better understand the world around them. But education is *essential* for a mother. How can she educate her children, how can she teach them to appreciate and cherish their own education, if she does not attend to her *own* education?
      Catholics do believe that a woman's vocation is to be a wife and mother (or a nun), but that does not mean that she should not have a career. That career does not have to be homemaker, though blessed are the homemakers, but even if it is homemaker she should be educated.
      Catholics were the first champions of women's education. The very first woman in the world to earn a university degree was a Catholic woman who attended a Catholic university. In the 15th century. She went on to write one of the pioneering works on Latin translation. And she was a wife and mother.
      Catholics established the first convents, where women could live and pursue their vocation as nuns. These convents raised funds by *educating the daughters of the nobiliy.* The Benedictine Sisters have been educating women for hundreds of years, long before America existed.
      You have no idea what you are talking about, what the purpose and value of education is, or why those women were clapping. You see everything from such a narrow, ignorant perspective. It's sad.

  • @CreekValleyCritters
    @CreekValleyCritters Před 21 dnem +10

    If they really want more women to be homemakers, they should pay women who stay home with the kids a guaranteed livable income. This would make being a homemaker have more status, and it would make it financially possible to stay home to raise the kids. Many women would love to be stay-at-home mothers, they just can’t afford to. It would be in the country’s best interest as well, since unstressed mothers tend to create more stable, capable children, leading to less social problems and a thriving economy down the road. Children growing up in poverty are often stunted in their mental, emotional and intellectual development leading to an increase in social problems.
    Same with abortion. Make childcare affordable, make medical care affordable, make housing affordable, make education affordable, pay mothers a subsidy, and suddenly the rate of women choosing not to have an abortion will go up dramatically. Most women don’t want to have an abortion but feel they have little choice.
    Without implementing a robust social safety net, forcing women to stay at home, taking their choice away when it comes to abortion, is just plain cruel. It will lead to a lot of misery for both women and their children, and ultimately lead to a very unhealthy society with a lot of deep unhappiness, social ills and crime. If you are not willing to create strong social programs, you cannot ask women to stay at home, you cannot make abortion illegal. Ultimately it will lead to fewer women deciding to even have children, since now pregnancy will be much more dangerous, since in extreme cases, abortion is not even allowed to save the mother’s life. It is already having an effect on men, young men are having vasectomies at unprecedented rates so they don’t end up having to be responsible for an unwanted child. Without advocating for strong social programs to support mothers and their children at the same time as promoting stay-at-home motherhood and banning abortion, this whole debate is not about morality at all, it is about controlling women and putting them back into a state of dependence and semi-slavery. When you ban abortion to the point of sacrificing the life of the mother, you are sending a strong message to women that they are second class citizens and of little value.

    The joke is on him. In every developed nation, where women are able to forge their own careers, rather than being forced into being homemakers, the nation benefits both economically and socially. Giving women more power over their own lives does in fact reduce such things as unwanted pregnancies and abortion, while boosting the economy with a larger workforce.
    The simple truth is that empowering women benefits us all.

      And in a society where women can work, the pressure on men to produce is reduced. This creates a more peaceful society as men are less agressive, less likely to commit serious crimes, or have mental issues. Women have spent decades working on doing their part, yet when it comes to men doing the work to do more in the home, in the family care and there is immense pushback cause ego is more important that family.

      There is a _little_ bit more nuance to it all than you're making it look... For example, the social and economic expectation now is that women have their own careers. It's significantly harder for couples/families to live on just one income now than it was, and polls show that far more women are unhappy in their careers than men.
      Don't get me wrong, going back to the stereotypical gender roles would be an atrocity, all I'm saying is that it's not just black and white, it's all shades of gray, it's just a much lighter gray now.

    Home maker is definitely the most important title a woman can hold and it’s very significant and important in society. Every woman will know this deeply after they hit 35 and have no marriage/ family.

    "The tyranny of diversity, equity, inclusion." This is Orwellian double speak, pure unadulterated bullshirt. I get it, coming from Butker, intelligent thinking not being one of his strong attributes. He believes that words go together because "I dont' like that" so "I don't like diversity and I don't like tyranny so tyranny of diversity" makes sense to him. Except that isn't how words and ideas work, that isn't how thinking works. And, Butker will be the first one in line to follow some tyrannical authority. That there was an applause is saddening. What is amazing is how, like an AI ChatBot, he can speak with such seeming eloquence while having no capacity for intelligent thought.

      @@kwamebushman606 No it isn't. Democracy is a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives. What you are trying to allude to is that he is entitled to his opinions because in the USA you have the right to free speech. Just like all of us here in the youtube peanut gallery .

      @@kwamebushman606 Children who grow up with that gender roles nonsense often end up wounded and traumatised by unnecessary guilt, and they curse their upbringing for the rest of their lives. These teachings cripple marriages. It's good to point out when somebody's opinion can hurt people.
