We had a joke in the USSR. In different variations, but something like this:
A NYT journalist brings an article to the editor. "The Soviet gymnast won gold at the World Championships."
Editor: "Are you a fool? - rewrite it normally."
Journalist "The Soviet gymnast won the World Championship.. But at what cost?"

It’s strange when Europeans say that Russians are losers, because they lost so many soldiers in 2 years, while America lost only 4,000 people in Iraq in 8 years. They don't take into account the fact that:
1.The Iraqis did not have as much military equipment and weapons.
    2. Almost a million military personnel did not fight against the Americans with constant reinforcements and several waves of mobilization.
3.The Iraqis did not have satellite intelligence from other countries.
4.The most developed countries in the world did not help the Iraqis.
5.The Iraqis did not have drones or modern radio equipment.
6.The Iraqis did not speak the language of the Americans and could not pass themselves off as them.
7.The Iraqis did not leave for America and did not destroy military installations within the country.
8.The Iraqis did not have such strong propaganda.
9.The terrain of Iraq is deserted, the terrain of Ukraine is more difficult due to large forests in which it is convenient to hide. Houses in Iraq are basically low, houses in Ukraine are multi-story, making it easy to hide in them.
    10. Ukraine has a lot of artillery, Iraq did not have artillery in such quantity and variety.
That's not all, I'm too lazy to go further down the list.
Russia is fighting against Ukraine, which has all this.
It is wrong that Europeans, who fight only with weak countries, tell Russia that it is weak.

In other words: if ukraine would truly just defend itself it would be enough. If you can prove without doubt that's what happened you have the high ground no matter if your opponent is a human or orc. But they can't. There is actually prove that's not what happened. Russian/Soviet small squad tactics have been on par with the west as far back as WW2. If anything, the Red army always had a much heavier emphasis on artillery, over infantry. But they recognized the importance of combined arms since the 30s. Flexible defense, deep penetrating assault with encirclement, overwhelming artillery is how the Soviets won WW2, not human waves. Any "human waves" that occurred were a result of poor coordination and bad intelligence, i.e. blunders caused by fog of war.

Yet their commanders organised 5 more platoons to do the exact same thing. But they aren't meatwaves...
What is funny is, that copeplanation feels extra hollow now we see Russians drive open unarmoured Chinese golfkarts towards Ukrainian positions and actually get mowed down with machinegun fire on approach.

@@Deathadder90 Do you have a video of the Russians "walking down a road" and then commanders organizing "5 more platoons"? Do you have video of them getting "mowed down with machine gun fire on approach"?
I have seen none of these things in Ukraine. I haven't even seen a single platoon moving forward, never mind 5 of them. The highest number I have ever seen was a squad, maybe a bit more. Never seen squad machine gun fire cause casualties, only AKs at very short range, or suppressive fire to pin down the enemy.
Infantry squad tactics involve moving infantry forward on foot. Sometimes the artillery and recon don't do their job and people die. But the point isn't to "overwhelm the machine gunner". The point is to do a push reconnaissance: move forward to take positions or force the enemy to reveal their strong points. This is followed by retreat and more artillery, or bringing in air/artillery/armor assets to deal with the strong points.
A "human wave" hasn't happened since WW1, it's all a myth perpetuated to reinforce racist stereotypes, as it's physically impossible to take a position armed with even a singe machine gun. Everyone who went to a military academy knows this.
There is a good video made by the marine corps demonstrating what a properly set up machine gun team with a belt fed machine gun can do: mow down thousands of enemy troops at 300 yards within seconds for hours at a time. A "human wave" of 10 thousand men can not take a single machine gun.

During the Soviet-Finnish War, all Finnish newspapers were published daily with victorious reports about the extermination of thousands of Russian soldiers, hundreds of their tanks, and dozens of aircraft. About the help of the whole world in the war against the USSR. And then suddenly, one morning, all the newspapers came out with the headline, in huge letters in a black frame, - FINLAND CAPITULATES.

This goes back all the way to the US Civil War. For generations the prevailing myth about Grant's broad-front offensive into the South was that he just ran his men carelessly into Southern guns trading lives for territory. The truth is, while Grant did make some blunders (such as Cold Harbor), he simply had the manpower to attack more objectives in more places while also being able to outnumber his opponent. His reputation as a butcher is wholly unwarranted because just because he kept with the prevailing military doctrines of the time, which resulted in higher casualties by their nature. Plus, he was on the offensive, which also by nature (usually) results in higher casualties.

It means many things, camouflage, concealment, disseption, planting false intelligence to trick the enemy, etc, etc. But I never thought that it could be so effective to the point where you can make the enemy believe their own lies. It's like the Germans after WW2, we only lost the war on the eastern front because of the bad weather, it was the leaders mistakes, they over ran us with their endless human waves blah blah blah. History repeats itself, no one ever wants to admit to being outfought by Russia and has to come up with an excuse to imply that the enemy was cheating somehow.

Only in modern times these tactics are no more used. From Vikings to Romans to Turks and Polish Knights to Napoleonic wars and axe wars, to WW1 and WW2, Vietnam war, Korean...Yugoslav partisan and East Front battles - there were HUMAN WAVES fights... Люди это основной ресурс любого государства, и стоят они гораздо дороже снарядов, это как минимум рационально. By that logic russian losses must be well in the millions with even more still alive and pouring into the frontline every day. Because the only possible reason for extra troops in such a case is just because they just can not manage to reload the machine guns quickly enough to keep mowing the rising zombie waves. What can I say, if the ukrainian army itself truely believed in that then they would have already lost a long time ago.
