Pool Lesson: Center-To-Edge (CTE) Aiming System (My Interpretation)

- Hey everyone! After receiving numerous request to do a video on the Center-To-Edge (CTE) aiming system, I studied it for about week. After watching multiple videos, multiple times, and reading a few articles on the CTE aiming system I was able to perform the basics of the CTE aiming system using a pure center ball hit.
I hope my interpretation of the CTE aiming system allows you to also be able to perform the basics!
REMINDER:
This is just my interpretation of the CTE system. If I'm wrong about it, I'm wrong. If I was able to add another perspective that others may be able to interpret more and add to the system, then great. I am NOT saying this is THE way you're supposed to do it. All I'm saying is this what I've been able to pull from all the stuff I've read and watched. The more I study and learn about it, the more I'll share and amend any mistakes.

Chris; I've practiced your original simple method and found it works well for me. I've also tried using a pro-one variant, as I understand it, based on your interpretation of CTE. Have you done, or would you consider producing a video/explanation of pro one? Thanks.

Stan shuffet made stupid videos about cte and said a whole lot of nothing and kept hawking his 40 dollar vids. My buddy bought it and we watched it and Holy sht you would think he was trying to teach differential calculus.
@@JohnS-il1dr don’t get me wrong, Stan knows what he’s talking about, he’s an amazing coach, he just doesn’t know how to teach it to the common player who has limited practice time, he raised an 18 year old to spank one of the greatest ever in a competition match. But his instructional videos are just entirely too over complicated for even really good players to get value from them. Chris may not be the best player out there, but he is amazing at breaking things down simply for everyday players to be able to instantly implement.
Ya it sucks trying to watch an hr long video n they barely get the point across.

DUDE SERIOUSLY...the last video I saw was some absurdly good player using terminology and methodologies that I couldn't fathom.

i would like to thank you for making it easyer for me yo understand CTE. your videos are a great help. if you get time could you do a video on how to hit a object ball going 1 or 2 rails where you don"t give ball in hand.
If anyone was going to make this method easy to digest for the everyday person it was bound to be Chris. Phenomenal teaching skills. No fiddling around just straight to the point.
First he had to understand CTE at a high level. Next he had to come up with a plan to teach it. He did both of those things better than anyone I've seen to date.

I've listened to numerous people try to explain CTE aiming system and they all failed miserably until now. This like all of your videos is outrageously easy to understand which is greatly appreciated. And one instructor who tries to explain this and I'm not going to name is very well respected and what he does is just yap away saying the same thing over and over again that made no sense the first time he said it and he ends up shooting shots while he continues to yap away and we have no effing idea what he's doing. For some strange reason this instructor has comments disabled for his videos. I'm guessing he got tired of reading how bad he is at instructing. This video is fantastic. Thank you Lil' Chris !

I’m very glad to see this shown. I began playing billiards at the age of 10. I used the 10 ball instead of The Cue Ball to understand what was going on with the ball I was hitting. One day At the age of 15 I was introduced to my brothers best friends grandfather. This man played professionally. He was watching me shoot his table for a brief period of time and he realized that I actually saw the lines on the table to make my shots. Even bank shots were simple. playing on the league pool games people knew do not leave me a bank shot on any ball especially the 8 ball because I will most likely make it.This is without me reading books or educating myself on how to play better. It was just playing with the 10 a lot it and was my body that was creating the angle. Joe saw the deep passion that I had for billiards(ALL) and said as long as I promised to never ever bet anything on this game He would teach me a few little tips and tricks one of which was NEVER ever hit left or right of center. I was using the same the system without even knowing what the name of it was. I kept my promise to Joe and never disrespected him or the sport by betting anything on it. I had old teammates that thought I had no idea what I was doing. However those are not the teammates that I went to the APA tournament in Vegas in 2011. Out of over a thousand teams the team I was fortunate enough to be on came in 147th. So we won a small amount of money however nothing will ever replace the passion I have for billiards and respect and gratitude I’ve held for Joe all these years. A extremely important thing for a new pool or billiards player is to know how to chalk properly and after each and EVERY shot! Our team represented the state of Massachusetts in the year 2011 with the team that I was on and I was not questioning my shooting style/system There are many systems out there to learn however I stick with the basics just like Joe showed me to do. Joe you are missed.
watched this video a few days back and decided to try out CTE aiming with your instructions. Potted 65 out of 100 balls on first try, 76 out of 100 on second try. Seems like this one suits me really well, I will try to implement it more often for some harder cut shots. Thanks Chris, everyone should subscribe

I just love your videos. you explain things in a simple but direct way! you have made my love for the game come back. My life isn't the same since my brain tumor operation. and I'm serious about when I say you have inspired me to pick up my stick and chalk it.

This lesson has to be the most practical, straightforward, and logical I’ve ever had - on video or person-to-person . . . thank you for breaking down what can be for some (me) the ever-bewildering concept of aiming, and putting it together with awesome videography to create that visual memory to play in my mind’s eye as I get down on my shots. Thank you for that well done and finally straight to the point explanation. I've watched at least five rambling, mumbling inarticulate and snooze inducing videos that made me want to strangle someone. One guy went through all the aiming systems he used over the last twenty years before he got to CTE. It was like watching home movies of a family on a carnival cruise, I nearly opened a vein. Another guy kept calling his index finger his fore finger. WTF is a fore finger? I almost did the unthinkable and considered taking up golf. You saved me.

You are absolutely right. He explains it in simple terms and does not digress into other useless information trying to demonstrate how knowledgeable he is. He focusses on the key elements on how it works and illustrates it very clearly. In other videos people ramble on how it works and then just shoot without demonstrating what they are actually doing. They could be bullshitting and we can't really tell.

Great instructional video! I practiced it for about 2 hours tonight, and am amazed with this technique. It makes the 15 or so degree cuts extremely simple to make. Thanks for the clear explanation.

You believe someone who claims to be out in the country, happens to see a ROUND BARN. Takes out his gun & shoots holes in the barn? Then another guy has a video w/ a round barn model on the pool table. Same guy claims to know how most pro's think.

Now I understand why they explained it in a very complicated way. If not, they couldn't make a book to sell, because actually it's very simple method. I've tried it once, I couldn't pot the ball as I want to do random experiment, but it's very close and I'm amazed, now I just have to get used to it. Still, IMHO before learning how to aim with CTE, we must have a good understanding of ghostball aiming too. Next, I will try to mix them both, because I think, they complemented each other. Even the pure founders of cte do not explain like this , and those guys do a great job with cte. This just simplifies the process.

Very well done. These kind of aiming systems are a bit tricky. I think it depends what level of a player you want to be. I realized after trying multiple aiming systems, I'm better with no system at all. I do a lot of aiming with the edge of my ferrule, and allows me to play any type of english on any shot with ease. But I'm focused on the contact point only. It allows me to worry about my speed, cue ball control, english, etc. I found when I use systems, I worried way to much about making the ball, and less concentration on cue ball control.

Treat it like face of a clock. Every 5 minutes segment is 30 degrees and 45 degrees is 1.5 segments or about 7 minutes. Easy to visualize.

Correct me if i am wrong but this system seems to only be using OUTSIDE PIVOTS away from the cut angle, This is an interesting implementation of CTE. Have been a CTE user for years, and am applying the PRO ONE methods of this which also uses an A B C aiming point on the object Ball while using the Left and Right Edges of the Cue ball to align the shot pre pivot.
One of the biggest examples of a difference in implementation of your technique would be at czcams.com/video/2E7T0gltORc/video.html 4:54 Where you have a 15 degree cut to your right, in your terms you used a A to A aiming with a Pivot Out. In the PRO ONE method, which sticks to the ABC points being Left To Right, you would use a RIGHT EDGE on Cue Ball to C on the Object Ball with a Pivot Inwards.
In all the methods of CTE i've seen so far almost all of them utilise pivots inwards and outwards depending on angle, with yours being the only one which utilises EXCLUSIVELY outward pivots, but with a variations in the Cue Ball Alignment points (being ABC on the cue ball rather than , Centre to Edge, Right Edge to ABC or Left Edge to ABC).
Thanks for doing the video, but more impressed with the ingenuity of implementation of a ONE DIRECTIONAL PIVOT CTE. As with all CTE users, i think there are always certain Pivots and shot types that are not as spot on as others, and i think anyone who already uses CTE in any form can benefit from the additional information you have shared here ...... and for those who do not this i a brilliant introduction which removes the "PERCEPTION" mystery behind other CTE Preechers, which to be honest often times diminishes the Technique and over simplifies something that still needs to be practiced.
Would love to hear your thoughts on how Bridge Lengths affect your technique as there is always a debate between Starting More Offset Pre Pivot (1.5 tips out) vs using a shorter bridge to set up the pivot which can get the same pivots required when setting up thinner cuts.

As I mentioned in the video, I had to watch multiple videos multiple times and re-read articles over and over. It wasn't until I got on the table and started trying stuff, that I noticed similarities between all the different interpretations and saw that, for myself, the one directional pivot showed some consistency. I am by NO MEANS, saying this is THE WAY to perform CTE. This is just what I was able to interpret from what I studied. If I'm wrong, I'm wrong. If I exposed another perspective into the system, awesome!
As far as the ABC (left cut) vs CBA (right cut), I just thought it's easier to remember that A is 15 degree cuts, B never changes (30 degree cuts), and C is 45 degree cuts.
I've also read/watched about how the bridge length matters. However, this didn't seem to matter when I was performing the 15/30/45 with my other camera in the way and had a LONG bridge (over a foot). I am NOT saying that the bridge length doesn't matter, I am saying that it didn't seem to have an affect in what I was showing.

Anyway for comparisons sake
Pro one
Anything less than 30 is a pivot inwards
30 to 43-45 is a pivot outwards
45-50 is a pivot Inwards based off of the 1/4 alignment
Anything beyond that is a 1/8th alignment with either in or out.
Your system
Pivot out for all based on
15 is A
30 is B
45 is C
Beyond is 1/8
Personally I think your 30 on B will help me the most as the CTE on B is usually to thick unless you are on tournament conditions!

A couple thoughts.
First, this was really interesting, thanks for sharing. I'm going to have to give this a try
Second, ok A = 15, B = 30, C = 45 and "D" = ...a lot. This seems overly simple, and your examples specifically show 15, 30, 45, and a very thin cut. My question is, what do you do if you have an angle of, say, 22 degrees. Does aiming right in between A and B work for that?
The "D" Spots are very vague in this system - jumping from 45 degrees to the maximum which is around 90 degrees for a centerball hit is a pretty extreme jump. Surely there must be more to it (or, if there's not, that's wild and I'm excited to try it out), but a, say, 85 degree shot must be different from a 65 degree shot, right? (Oh jeez, now that I'm thinking about it, they aren't drastically different. This is blowing my mind a little bit)
While this *could* apply for banks, kicks, and caroms, I'm not sure it makes sense to use it in those contexts (we already have the diamond system, tangent line/natural roll logic, etc). However, I'm very curious to know how english affects these shots (Or even like cut induced throw), and I do hope you put out a video explaining it.

CTE is perception based aiming system. Where your mind will adjust your shot.
At least that’s what i gathered from Stans videos. I just couldnt understand half the things he was saying as he was using terms like “Visual Sweep”. Wtf is that

I agree. His system depends on being able to measure these cut angles. But what about angles in between 15, 30 and 45 degrees? Split the differences somehow?
My hat is off to you Chris! You have convinced me that CTE works for you at least. Because of your ability to explain how you make it work, I'm gonna give it a go again! I'm optimistic that it will , largely based on your video and your talent in conveying your method. As a number of others have pointed out its a rare person that can simplify a system that here to fore , in spite of many that have sincerely tried to explain, left many of us confused. I'm relatively new to the game as I had a friend give me a pool table a couple of years ago and I figured since I have a table, I should l really learn the game. I recently joined an APA team and won MVP in 9 ball in my 1st session and since watching this video, I have adopted the CTE system and my shot making has really increased. Thank you for breaking down the information as I have seen other videos and I was left unimpressed. Great job and thanks again!!
I think I’ll just think of A B & C as 15 30 & 45 degrees remembering the 15 is always on the inside. Well that makes sense to me at least...

I thought it would be easier to for me to identify which aim point to use if I eliminated having to translate the degree into a letter. Ya know 😄
how about angles such as 22, 23, 35, 36??
Im not using this system , my opinion to your question is just use the closest degree of ABC and you can make it i think . With the system that i created i have an exact aim point for 22 ., 23 35 and 36

When I was starting to shoot pool this system didnt make a lick of sense to me. Now here we are 2 years later and you made finally comprehensible.
Finally! An understandable explanation of CTE. After watching dozens of instructional videos and still not getting it, I was beginning to think that I was just plain dumb. Now I can see that some very good players just don't know how to teach. Thanks Chris.
I have always had issues cutting the thin ones close to the rails. Now I will try this method to hopefully get a more precise shot and not feel like it's a lick shot when I make it! Thanks Chris!

I had an old guy show me this once and I was sinking cut balls left and right without issue. I let a couple weeks pass without playing pool and when I tried to remember what he showed me, I must have missed a step because I couldn't figure it out and had to cut em in the old way!

Excellent demonstration explaining a complex system and appreciate it greatly. Now it'll just take a little to correctly locate the aiming points on the object ball.
Kudos to you Chris... I so so so appreciate you explaining this so straight-forwardly! I've personally talked with Stan over the phone a year and a half ago ... when his tell all book was going to come out... I kept waiting, kept waiting, kept checking his website and facebook... He's saying that he has no control of the publisher when the book will come out. I literally think he'd do well to sell the digital version (pdf)... self-publishing. His videos are so, so hard to grasp with all the general terms.
I gave up about four months ago and went total fractional aiming... measuring the angle with my stick and the width of my hand at a certain point of my cue - I established this on my own with 15, 30 and 45 degree cut out triangles that I printed out. It's working really well. I've way upped the level of my play.
