My sister also made her own lyrics for the Alex Kidd theme... "Alex the kidd, Alex the kidd. Don't you dare lose your new pair of sandals." Yeah, I dunno, she was like 11. Didn't say they were great. lol
When I play as Alex Kidd in Sonic Allstar Racing Transformed I feed into the bitterness and hatred Alex must feel for the other racers for ruining his career, and it helps me win.
I beat this game using an issue of VG&CE since they had maps and also mentioned the vague things I was supposed to do in order to get past certain places. VG&CE = Video Games & Computer Entertainment magazine.
The bosses in alex kidd is not random. I used to play it all the time when i was a kid. And i remember i wrote down every combination for all bosses to beat them in one go.
I owned the Japanese version of Alex Kidd in the Echanted Castle as I owned the Japanese console before it's Australian release. Mostly the same except Japanese text and in the Rock, Paper, Scissors game there's a censorship in play. In the Japanese version you lose your clothes and Alex walks off the stage in embarrassment. This was replaced with a 100T weight falling on you. Great game and Sega need to bring him back. So many Aussies remember him fondly as Sega outsold Nintendo in this country in the 8 bit era.
Omfg!!!!!! I remembered playing High Tech World as a kid and absolutely loving it but I couldn't remember what it was called just some of the stuff that happened at the start. I then spent the next 20 years trying to find it again, I was certain it was either an Alex Kidd or Wonder Boy game but I had played all of them hundreds of times just to make sure and never found it. Never even bothered trying High Tech World though because as the name suggests I thought that game would be set in a high tech world and that didn't fit the memories I had of this game. Now I watch this video and see the footage of it and I'm like OMG OMG OMG THAT'S THE GAME!!!!!!!!!!! I'M NOT GOING CRAZY AFTER ALL!!!!!!!!!!!!! So um yeah, thanks!
Nice video. I've only played a bit of the first one and it didn't really suck me in but seeing that it changes it up after the first level makes me want to play it again.
I bought a Sega Mega Drive retro-console thingy with plenty of games built in, and one of those were Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. Fantastic game, even today. We really, really need a new one like that and Miracle World.
Awesome video, never had a master system growing up and did not know anything about Alex Kidd until recently. I will deffinetly check out these games on Virtual Console or pick them up for the SMS if i come across them.
1:45 It's worth noting that there's an item very early in the game that displays what the bosses are "thinking" for their rock paper scissors choice, allowing you to react as they change their minds. I think you get it in scissorhead's lair (second boss?) so you only have to beat the first boss by memorizing or randomly guessing.
Alex Kidd was one of my best childhood memories. I only really played the first one until I started getting serious with collecting years later. Thank you for this trip down memory lane!
Great video, Johnny. I never really played these games that much as a kid but it was great to hear your thoughts on the series. I've got 'Alex Kid in Shinobi World' but only picked it up because I really like 'Shinobi'. You're right, it's a very tough game. I actually like the sound of 'Alex Kidd in High Tech World' but I think I might need a walkthrough close at hand if I ever pick it up because it sounds like those puzzles are going to be tricky.
As a Master System owner back in the day... this brings back so many memories! Dang was 'Miracle World' hard... and those stupid bloody cars in Enchanted Castle still tick me off. A great overview! Thanks!
i have never forgotten about Alex Kidd, a friend of mine had a Sega with that back in the days, and i remember having a lot of fun playing that when i was at his place, i myself had a Nintendo like all others i knew here in Norway, but glad that he had Sega so i could try some of those games
i love alex kidd i wish sega brought him back in his platform games 3d modern style with nostalgic music better version awsome stages good power ups new powers for alex kidd vocal songs
How does the Alex Kidd Enchanted Castle game on the At Games Sega Genesis port compare to the original Sega Genesis Alex Kidd EC game? I notice that in the At Games version if you win a scooter or pogo stick in the paper, scissors, rock competition, you don't get to use it in the game, which is a let down.
This video brought back some good memories! I remember getting the sega master system 2 with Alex Kid In Miracle World built into the system. I also picked up Ghouls and Ghosts and Golden Axe For the Master System before I got my Genesis with Sonic.
i briefly played these games with my cousins back in the day, but never owned any Alex kidd titles until i bought the Genesis collection on PS3. Man, you're making me consider picking up more.
Another great Master System era video! I have so many fond memories of playing Alex kidd in Miracle World. Gotta thank Sega for having it built in with the Master System II. Alex Kidd was also a big factor for me getting into gaming at a young age.
You got a very good talent for game reviews! You talk on a very personal level that makes you very likable. I first played a Alex Kid game on a Sega Genesis emulator plug-in-play but I was only about 8 years old then so I didn't know much about it then or anything. I do remember I used to really hate those bosses though...
I remember when my buddy got an SMS model 2 and Alex Kidd in Miracle World was the built in game. I just had hang-on and the maze game with my model 1.
Finally, someone does justice to Alex Kidd! Great video, Johnny. By the way, Alex Kidd in Miracle World is one of the hardest games on the Master System I've ever beat, right up there with Fantasy Zone.
hah maybe. I think the hardest though is lost stars. You would have to go through all the levels again with some major slowdown when things got complex.
I have a lot of fond memories of this series as well. Strangely enough, I am the most nostalgic towards the Lost Stars, but I believe that was the first one I played. Like you, there was only one person in my neighborhood with a SMS, haha! Had that neighbor not had one, I probably wouldn't have had ANY experience with the system (or these games) as a kid.
Me too Johnny, Alex Kidd In the Enchanted Castle I played in my childhood. I remember it was very fun but extremely frustrating. Fun if you can keep a vehicle.
4:55 Awesome transition! :) Enchanted Castle is my favorite. It was also one of the first games I got with my Sega Genesis in '89. I remember the colors standing out. I was happy to see Alex Kidd in Sega Tennis & Racing as well. It's been said Sega named the first character that dies in Golden Axe (Alex) to represent them killing him off as a mascot. I'm not sure if that's true or not.. but it's interesting story none the less.
wow my first alex kid was on a friends master system on one of the cards you used to slide i nthe front of the system remember ? it was so much fun comeing from a spec-zx also hang-on was great.
I remember having to have several eye surgeries when I Was younger. In the hospital waiting room, I would always play Alex Kidd 1 and the Aladdin game!
As some people have already pointed out, the rock-paper-scissors matches in Miracle World were actually piss-easy. The bosses would always pick the symbol their head could beat (so the guy with a rock head would pick scissors) and then always the symbol that could be beaten with their previous choice. I was quite proud of myself when I figured that out at age 7 :-)
Awesome review, the first system I owned was a master system II with Alex Kidd in Miracle World built in. With the boss battles there are at least a few bosses that have a set pattern which they will always do, so once you know the move they make It's easy to beat them. There are also other "bosses" that you battle atthe end of certain levels, you have to hit them several times to win, I remember a big robot guy at the end of the forest level and a pig/hog.
I remember playing Alex Kidd in Miracle World and Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. The boss fight always drove me crazy. The games music were amazing.
Loved Enchanted Castle as a kid. Fond, fond memories. Revenge of Shinobi, too -- with the weird Spider-Man and "Bat-Man" cameos and the Godzilla boss fight? And hey, you've got LUNAR in the background -- RAD.
True, the janken matches on Enchanted Castle were blind luck, but Miracle World actually has a pattern (that I memorized as a kid and never could forget). Also, there's the Telepathic Stone, that allows you to read your enemies thoughts.
Did your Parents take you to Washington State to get your games? I live there and we have alot of Canadians that move here and come down for shopping, heck, we have more in common with Canada then we do the other States. People from other states think we have Canadian accents :)
Right, for the 3 first bosses choose the shape of the boss head for the first round then for the second round take what he just lost with. (i.e. rock then scissors for the 1st boss)
Another interesting bit of trivia is that the first boss in Shinobi World is parody of Super Mario and is called Mari-Oh in the Japanese version. The US version was edited so that it wasn't as obvious.
Definetely want to try Shinobi World and the Megdrive version.. I have one of those Master Systems where Alex Kid is built into it, a pretty nice supprise! That music is catchy as hell..
i remember when i first got the SMS alex kid in miracle world was one of the games i got with it and i stayed up all night playing it. it was one of the first times i stayed up all night until the sun came up.
I was born in 85, so didn't get into Sega till about 1992. Genesis was my first Sega console and was unaware Alex Kidd was the mascot before Sonic. Didn't discover Kidd till around 2008 or so when I got Sega All Stars Tennis. He's a cool character and reminds me of Wonder Boy. Hope they bring him back like they did Wonder Boy. Great vid.
Oh shit this game takes me back. I got the Mega Drive for my birthday, the package came with 4 games. Sonic 1, that bike riding 3d game, a soccer game and Alex Kidd. This was the shizznit. The first game I bought on the MD was this Donald Duck game, where you shoot the plunger. That was awesome too.
It would be nice to see Alex Kidd revived. I wonder how it would work in 3d, or re-imagined in 2d or with a larger audience of gamers. I guess it would fit the 3ds market the best. A fun series that I found challenging. I am too used to speeding through platformers. Can't really do it here.
he bosses were more memory than luck, for example the first ""Stone Head," to beat him it was always stone then scissors. Although is you lose it changes and the next boss changes his usual pattern as well
The first variation had Snail Maze, followed by Alex Kidd in Miracle World, Hang-On, and Hang-On/Safari Hunt respectively. The Master System II came with Alex Kidd in Miracle World as well, which was later replaced with Sonic the Hedgehog. There's a Wikipedia article titled "Variations of the Sega Master System" which should clarify everything if you have anymore questions. :)
The first 3 bosses you could memorize the pattern in rock, paper scissors.. the rest you needed the hidden item from the cave level so you were able to see their thoughts...
I had the master system with Alex Kidd built in
causerDAguv 😮
Same here. Sadly, it couldn't play Sega Game Cards...
I love how you get game over from wearing armor. Almost died of laughter when i saw that!
My sister also made her own lyrics for the Alex Kidd theme... "Alex the kidd, Alex the kidd. Don't you dare lose your new pair of sandals." Yeah, I dunno, she was like 11. Didn't say they were great. lol
Alex the kid alex the kid alex the kidd in miracle world alex the kid alex the kid alex the kid is great
Rin LOL. Your comment made my day. :-D

Yh and sometimes you have to double bluff , but as long as you keep the order, it works
Still a garbage mechanic. It most likely means you won't have the ability to beat the boss on your first try which is a huge no no
Thanks for the review, my brother. It does bring back memories.
Lol I can just imagine sonic playing rock paper scissors with eggman. XD
Great game and Sega need to bring him back. So many Aussies remember him fondly as Sega outsold Nintendo in this country in the 8 bit era.
I recall having it built into my master system.if u turned the console on without a game in it you would load up alex kidd
ur videos r like a lesson in my 'history of game design' class. I love it. Keep up the awesome vids.
awesome video man. what a great series! i remember running home from school to play the first game :)
Omfg!!!!!! I remembered playing High Tech World as a kid and absolutely loving it but I couldn't remember what it was called just some of the stuff that happened at the start. Love this series and i have all the games you have on the table too.
Happy New Year mate
For Rock Paper Scissors you had to get a mind reading power up from one of the shops
It was hidden in the cave level not in one of the shops
Alex Kidd on Genesis finished in a few sittings?!?!? Not very hard?!?!! ....I haven’t been able to beat it in 30 effing years!!!!
Nice video. I've only played a bit of the first one and it didn't really suck me in but seeing that it changes it up after the first level makes me want to play it again.
I saw on Twitter that you had a lot of work on the editing! And it worked out really well, great stuff, Johnny!
Nice job!! Loved the first Alex Kidd !! Spent hours playing that as a kid!
I bought a Sega Mega Drive retro-console thingy with plenty of games built in, and one of those were Alex Kidd in the Enchanted Castle. Fantastic game, even today. We really, really need a new one like that and Miracle World.
This was cool. I like the way you present your videos.. feels really personal
Awesome video, never had a master system growing up and did not know anything about Alex Kidd until recently. I will deffinetly check out these games on Virtual Console or pick them up for the SMS if i come across them.

Amazing video man. Really enjoy your stuff
I really do applaud your video's on sega master system games. Great video as always and keep them coming!!!
I'm so happy when I see a HCG video in my sub box :,)
Cool episode ^_^, never knew anything about this series. As usual your memories are a lot of fun to hear about.
As a Master System owner back in the day... this brings back so many memories!
Dang was 'Miracle World' hard... and those stupid bloody cars in Enchanted Castle still tick me off.
A great overview! Thanks!
I can't remember but did you do the Wonder Boy series?
i have never forgotten about Alex Kidd, a friend of mine had a Sega with that back in the days, and i remember having a lot of fun playing that when i was at his place, i myself had a Nintendo like all others i knew here in Norway, but glad that he had Sega so i could try some of those games
you uploading a video has made my night Johnny!
i love alex kidd i wish sega brought him back in his platform games 3d modern style with nostalgic music better version awsome stages good power ups new powers for alex kidd vocal songs
Or 2.5D like LBP on PS
Great video mate. Sega Master System 2 was the first console I brought.
great video love these series reviews

Good review :) My favourites is the first on master system and the one on genesis!
i briefly played these games with my cousins back in the day, but never owned any Alex kidd titles until i bought the Genesis collection on PS3. Man, you're making me consider picking up more.
Miracle World is the best in the series in my opinion
Another great Master System era video! I have so many fond memories of playing Alex kidd in Miracle World. Gotta thank Sega for having it built in with the Master System II. Alex Kidd was also a big factor for me getting into gaming at a young age.
why couldnt sega just make a sequel to miracle world back in the day? *sigh*
They did, Enchanted Castle on the Genesis was the sequel.
I was meaning more "straight after miracle world was released" but I also didnt know that, thanks! Poor Alex Kiid
You wanted to use the mind reading power up for janken so you could see what they were gonna do
You got a very good talent for game reviews! You talk on a very personal level that makes you very likable. I first played a Alex Kid game on a Sega Genesis emulator plug-in-play but I was only about 8 years old then so I didn't know much about it then or anything. CLASSIC HCG EP made my sunday
The music at the beginning is called "The Alex Kidd Song" and it's by Tokuhiko Uwabo
Alex Kidd should return... someday
He’s returning 2021!!!
Finally, someone does justice to Alex Kidd! Great video, Johnny.
By the way, Alex Kidd in Miracle World is one of the hardest games on the Master System I've ever beat, right up there with Fantasy Zone.
Very nice review. Never played the genesis version, now i need this! ;-)
Great vid. One of my favorite series of games.
I hit like before I even watch the vid. Alex Kid in Miracle World was one of the first games I ever played as a kid.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World was my first game on the Sega Master System. Good memories!
8:17 do u always play that close to the TV? don't u get dizzy considering that tv is 40"+..
hah maybe. I think the hardest though is lost stars. You would have to go through all the levels again with some major slowdown when things got complex.

Good job with the video. I to have fond memories of this series as well.
Me too Johnny, Alex Kidd In the Enchanted Castle I played in my childhood. I remember it was very fun but extremely frustrating. Fun if you can keep a vehicle.
Right. But you have to know them all, cause if you fuck up once, the pattern is broken and you get different results.
Hell yeah, new episode!
4:55 Awesome transition! :)
Enchanted Castle is my favorite. It was also one of the first games I got with my Sega Genesis in '89. I remember the colors standing out.
I was happy to see Alex Kidd in Sega Tennis & Racing as well.

@kiman it was written on the reverse of a tablet you pick up, you have to go to the pause menu
I remember having to have several eye surgeries when I Was younger. In the hospital waiting room, I would always play Alex Kidd 1 and the Aladdin game!
just a quick question...wasnt the first game built IN to one of the Sega consoles?...
Built in Alex Kidd in Miracle world on my MSII, took so much of my childhood hours. That game was my Mario/Sonic.
As some people have already pointed out, the rock-paper-scissors matches in Miracle World were actually piss-easy. The bosses would always pick the symbol their head could beat (so the guy with a rock head would pick scissors) and then always the symbol that could be beaten with their previous choice. neat video, would watch again
What's the song at the beginning?

Miracle World came on my Master System.
Also used to love Enchanted Castle on Mega Drive.

In Australia the SMS was massive & Alex kid in miracle world was built in so everyone had it!
i remember when i first got the SMS alex kid in miracle world was one of the games i got with it and i stayed up all night playing it. it was one of the first times i stayed up all night until the sun came up.
True. And last bosses would change their choice on the last second, we had to change it too to win.
hey i was wondering, you say come to america alot to pick up games. why is that?
I say HCG is the best he has a real funny way about him I love his stories
my cart melted..when my sega megadrive blew up
Very nice video. By the way MCBRemakes is remaking in a Hi-RES Alex Kidd in Miracle World.
Great vid.

That game is quackshot, it was a really good adventure platformer for it's time!
silversandsx I can still hear the music! :D
First game I ever played on the SMS as it was built in!
I just replayed this game. You're right, there is a pattern to all of the janken matches. Classic game!
I have been waiting for johnny to do an Alex Kidd review!!!
I missed the easter egg in Altered Beast where you found the Alex Kidd's Grave........Anyway, nice vid Johnny!
I'm glad someone found Alex Kidd & Enchanted Castle bearable.
I believe he also appears as a cameo in Hyperdimesnion Neptunia on PS3.
Whelp Alex Kidd made it into Project X Zone 2 along with Oppa Oppa from Fantasy Zone. They both appear during Ulala's Solo attack.
he bosses were more memory than luck, for example the first ""Stone Head," to beat him it was always stone then scissors. Although is you lose it changes and the next boss changes his usual pattern as well
