I see a lot of people say _"STARFIELD_ would have been good if they had shrank the scope from 1,000 planets down to just 10 in the same solar system and then handcrafted each of them with maps the size of _Skyrim". Then others who think they know what is possible in game development say "That's impossible". Then others say "Neither of that matters as the RPG element is rubbish". Then others say "It's impossible to fill a galaxy with unlimited radiant quests which are in any way meaningful to the role player".
1. it doesn't matter how big the game is. The Milky Way has an estimated 400,000,000,000 planets. That is technically possible.
2. you can't handcraft a map in the way _Skyrim_ was made even for 1 planet. _Microsoft Flight Simulator 40th Anniversary Edition_ does not let you explore on foot.
3. it is possible, you just need to use many layers of teleological procedural generation. This recreates the entire geological, evolutionary, civilisational, and economic history.
4. RPGs are rubbish as you always encounter ludonarrative dissonance between what you would like your character to be able to do and what options the programmer anticipated.
5. similar to 3. it is easy to fill a game of any scale with virtual _dramatis personae_ who have their own secret _modus operandi_ and act in their interests whilst they are "off stage".
5.1 furthermore it is not realistic to make games revolve around the player, indeed they should default to a bystander/witness status, and observe the actions of an emergent system.
5.2 this system is the total set of AI agents and resources set up in such a way to be self-perpetuating, in order to make this interesting an AI director periodically asserts a theme.
5.3 as it would create ludonarrative dissonance for this director to mess with your player freedom directly, it affects the _dramatic personae_ you have formed "entanglements" with
5.4 it then sets up scenarios which are atemporal (doesn't matter if you are late), or ageographical (time sensitive, but doesn't matter where you are as "they" come to find you)
5.5 it can even be an asynchronous MMO of sorts, in the manner of _Forza Motorsport_ having AI mimics of absent friends. This populates space with idiosyncratic encounters.
None of this is possible with current development tools, which is why I have spent 25 years developing a new multiparadigm programming language which boosts my productivity so that I can rival the output of an entire studio in terms of gameplay. Graphically it isn't possible to make something look like _The Last of Us_ or _Hellblade_ as I lack performance capture tools

1: Overhauling the same outdated broken engine with every new release- resulting in more and more limitations as the graphical fidelity increases, and speaking of that...
2: They're always 5+ years behind other developers in regards to graphics, which wouldn't be such a bad thing if the PERFORMANCE were better, and speaking of that...

So you're saying they have two massively played games outperforming most games on steam? Checked and as of this moment on a Saturday Starfield has 53,477 and Skyrim SE has 29,954. Skyrim's average players last month on a saturday was roughly 22k-25k. Games Skyrim currently has more players than: Valheim, Rimworld, Phasmophobia, Path of Exiles, Total Warhammer 3, Payday 2, Garry's Mod, Rocekt League, Lords of the Fallen, Street Fighter 6, Warhammer Darktide, Civ 6, Factorio, Stellaries, No Mank's Sky, Fallout 4, Fallout76, Deep Rock Galactic, Slay the Spire, etc.

Note my comment was done 2days ago, on a week day. Obviously weekend will have more players, especially if you compare peak numbers.
No one also argues Skyrim beats many, especially niche, games (because none of ones you pointed out were very big, beside maybe Rocket League but in this case i feel it can be also affected by the fact it was moved to Epic Games). It's just a classic and a good game with even more content thanks to mods.
Skyrim i can see having steady 20-25k to even 30k right now. Even giving the high numbers Starfield now keeps around 30-45k and numbers keeps dropping every day, even with current peak to around 50k.
And we are talking about game that released bit over a month ago. Game that was advertised as their "biggest one yet" that should last for "hundreds of hours". That very game is losing players super fast even compared to other SP games without very sandbox features.... so i am really not sure what are you trying to prove here.
I did play the game and dropped quite some hours into it. Did i have... some fun? yeah, do i think this is objectivly a bad game? oh yeah. And people overall seem to agree.
It's fine if you are having fun, it's awesome. But that doesn't apply to everyone and people just cant go around calling everyone hater because they are not blinded by hype and love for Bethesda

You typed alot of words to say: Skyrim is an anomaly, both games are very popular, almost all new games will lose most of their population very quickly. This happened to Elden Ring, GTA V, RDR 2, The Witcher 3, and even Badlur's Gate which is holding players to an exceptional level lost 66% of its playerbase within 2 months. Elden Ring is much closer to a 1 to 1 genre comparison with open world RPG of similar setups and it lost over 80% within 2 months. You can try to explain each little example but then that just makes your comment so conditional as to be worthless.

Oblivion was in development for nearly 4 years, "Fallout" 3 was in development for over 2 years, and Skyrim was in development for nearly 3 years. You're telling me that Starfield was in development for over 8 years and this abomination is what we got? At least the first 3 Bugthesda games I mentioned were fun and good for their time but Starfield's design was 2 decades outdated.
I played the game via game pass, played for a few hours, got bored, uninstalled. Can't say I was expecting much. Bethesda has been riding off of their prestige for years now, which is odd they still have any.

@toringmort4231 No I haven't made that up, I followed the sub closey on launch because Armored Core 6 dropped at roughly the same time and I wanted to observe the difference between the two communities. The starfield sub was full of cope and criticism of the game was heavily downvoted or straight up deleted by the mods. The top posts on the subreddit were all like “Why Starfield is still my new favourite game” “Not being able to explore an entire planet isn’t a bad thing” “Not everyone hates the game, don’t be deceived!”. You can look all that up yourself if you sort by oldest and look at the top posts, the starfield community was and still is in a sad state and I can’t blame them. I would be too if my most anticipated game this year was Starfield instead of AC6 lmao

The problem with abandoning the creation engine is that Bethesda games have a HUGE modding scene. They COULD switch to something more technically appealing, sure, but a very vocal and active part of the fanbase could interpret this as a betrayal.

Didn't buy into the hype when it was announced, or when they shiny visuals were shown off, or when lots of people I know preordered it. I'm still not going to buy it now. Why would I? I've seen amazing work on Skyrim and fallout 3 and 4 from modders that improve the game in ways Bethesda would never have thought of. I'd be better off sailing the high seas and modding it in 2 to 3 years instead of giving bethesda any money.

Personally, I don't hate Starfield or love it. it just exists for now. I'll buy it when the modding tools become available and we start getting the fun stuff that just removes the MQ. Just a game with a lot of missed potential that really needed a better writing team. Then again, that's most Bethesda games :/

perhaps the greatest microcosm of Bethesda's borderline arrogant refusal to improve in any meaningful way is the D-pad inventory system.
It has been 20 years, 4 console generations, and Bethesda still vehemently refuses to put a weapon/item wheel in any their games.
No Man's Sky in 2023 is a better "Space Exploration Openworld Game" than Starfield in 2023

Starfield made me realize that with the exception of Fallout New Vegas none of their games are really any good compared to other RPGs. If Skyrim had released today it would've gotten shitted on too. People are just now noticing that they're bad, after playing the Witcher 3, Elden Ring, and Baldur's Gate 3.

I don't see anyone comparing From Software games with Bethesda, they are completely different games. And Witcher 3 is overrated, especially it's story. Baldur's Gate 3 being turn base is enough to turn lots of people away.
@z1u512 Stop lying, New Vegas would never happen if not for Bethesda and Fallout 3. It launched poorly because Obsidian's old habit of being over ambitious. And no they didn't get screw over for that bonus which Bethesda offered them but never obligated to, they missed one point so they don't get that bonus.
I never understood comparing skyrim to the witcher 3, witcher 3 feels way more story based like you have a fixed character and all that. Skyrim had a great world to interact with but the game felt really shallow in almost every other aspect. I havent played elden ring but im not that interested in combat based rpgs, the game looks brilliant tho. Baldurs Gate 3 seems awesome, id assume it absolutelly wrecks Skyrim in regards to its story. Id love to try out Baldurs Gate 3 once I upgrade my laptop.

Starfield isn't just everything bad about Bethesda. It's a step back from their strengths as well.
To me the perfect way to describe starfield is "one step forward two steps back" I guess. I really loved what they did with character creation in the start, it felt like they corrected a lot of their mistakes as they did in fallout 4. However they took the main thing from bethesda games, the exploration and made it all a few cities and beta no mans sky lookin ahh terrain. Even a lot of the mechanics from fallout 4 were downgraded and the story looks pretty lame. Honestly Ill just stick to no mans sky for my space game fix, the mass effect games look pretty cool too.

In 2016 I've worked abroad in Turkey and Germany, traveled a lot for several months and wanted to get back to play some games. F4 was coming out, my expectation were not high, I knew Bethesda going down into a drain. But it was fine a shooter. It was not Fallout game of course. And I knew that it's final game I will ever buy from Bethesda. Man, was I correct.
same-ish i knew fallout 4 is gonna suck i didnt expect him to be this lame and repetitive but with starfield, i always wanted a game like this, i of course lowered my standards and expectations but i am sad to report that the game is worse than fallout 4 and i hated fallout 4, i did not play skyrim because oblviion sucked so much but at least skyrim felt like a step up in some ways and it can be great with mods, fallout 4 sucks that only with mods it can be made a okayish grindfest time waster once you set it up juist right, starfield is so boring and lazy with less actual content than fallout 4 not to mention morrowind that i dont think mods can fix this. After this i am certain i will not buy another bethesda game.

It is a but frustrating but I have totally accepted that Bethesda games are not for me anymore. I really liked Skyrim, F4 a little less, but that was over a decade ago. Most games weren't doing what Bethesda was doing back then and so you'd just forgive the jank and questionable writing because it provided an experience no other game has. These days though, I don't think Bethesda can really grow if they keep doing games the same way without major improvements in the future. They will probably still have a sizable audience but nothing crazy.
I love this game and its just as good and fun as Skyrim. People hating it makes it even better

Starfield is just fallout 4 in space
That's actually the point, and Fallout 4 was a game that got better with mods and expansions. Despite having a fairly hollow game it outsold it's predecessors and was rated well. I'm saying this as someone who was disappointed by Fallout 4, Starfield didn't disappoint because I knew what to expect. Bethesda wasn't lying or misleading people leading up to the game release and anyone who felt like it was overhyped didn't understand what they were getting excited about.

I’ve enjoyed my time with it, but the main plot is ass. Multiple universe writing is boring and actually destructive to the world building.
It baffles me that they didn’t mainly write about the most interesting parts of the world like the political conflicts, or that the outpost building has no narrative significance compared to previous iterations.

The worst thing about starfield is that as a space fan who does not care about medieval fantasy i lowered my expectations, conceded that the game will be buggy and it will be decent with mods in a few years, just like fallout 4 which to be fair was not as good as skyrim with mods, that game was meh, well starfield is worse than fallout 4 and that comes from someone who hates fallout 4, how the fck you have less content than fallout 4 let alone morrowind which came out in 2002 when you hired 27 studios to help you make this game for a decade or so? How is the writing and the rpg mechanics worse than fallout 4? How can you not kill any npc in the game unless they have no unique dialogue, their dialogues makes me want to kill them not keep them alive so i can hear more of it. If you thought the fallout 4 story was bad wait till you see the story here and how grindy the main quest is, also it runs so bad it needs a 5060 to run well which will come out in 2 years. WTF bethesda? Not only they have not improved as a company at all but they are going backwards. "Space daggerfall" my ass an average procedurally generated city in daggerfall is bigger than all cities put together in this game, imagine using so much procedural generation and not letting you explore as much as you want and put invisible walls, this games make no man sky look good and i thought it was the most boring game i played. I d rather support indie devs like that one turkish man who made spacebourne 2. I will never buy another bethesda game.
i honestly wanted a fallout 4 part 2 out of starfield and i still was dissapointed, glad i could pirate it before it even released. but honestly ? at the end of the day people who will tell you it sucks will be the same people that have wasted hundreds of hours in it.

Earlier this year I did my first playthrough of openmw and it completely spoiled me on todd games. I refuse to believe real, flesh and blood human beings bought starfield. but when I look around it's the same people that fell for skyrim, fallout 4 and 76. These people will not change and are not worth helping.

Skyrim was the last acceptable Bethesda game, and even that isn't an RPG. Some of these reviewers act like the lack-lustre games should blow them away. When was the last time a game impressed you technically or with story. For me, Unrecord and VTMB. Video game discussion is just a hotbed of autism, enjoy yourself instead of bitching about something you can't fix.
