On the modding front, Starfield is the PERFECT "modding platform" for star trek, star wars, stargate, alien, and basically any other sci fi franchise. It's only a matter of time before we get Correlian Freighters or Klingon Birds of Prey, and I'm so here for it.

Oblivion was my first ever open world game, got randomly gifted it for Christmas and thought the starting heal spell was my only source of light and couldn’t get out of the sewer. Went back a couple weeks later and it’s now my all time favorite game, it holds up extremely well just played it recently and put another 70 hours in.
Starfield feels promising so far, I really enjoyed the faction quest line I did and while I’m not too bothered by the whole loading screen map thing to travel, I’m more bothered by the procedural worlds REALLY feeling procedural and I worry I won’t be able to explore as much like I could in other titles.

    • @jimmythegamer2231
      @jimmythegamer2231 Před 9 měsíci +16

There's more to Starfield than just the procedural planets. Most of the exploration should be done in the handcrafted areas and cities, which are about as big as something like Skyrim or Oblivion. That's the problem with a lot of people that bounce off of Starfield after playing like 2 hours of the game; they think that the only thing to do in the game is explore empty planets when that isn't the case.

I'm half with you. I reeeeally want them to add more stuff to the procedurally generated locations, like NPCs, random quests and most importantly mini stories told through notes and terminals logs!
I'm almost certain they'll add that in eventually though.
With that said, there are a ton of handcrafted places to land on most planets and moons.
If they add 5 letters that tell a story per every other procedurally generated location, I'd be thrilled. They'd be so easy to make too.

I feel like with updates / mods there could be more things that could happen as a result of custom systems that could shake things up. I hope DLCs that add more content could add to the pool of resources the proc gen can take from and give us some pleasant surprises as a result when exploring. Also mods are coming next year so Shattered Space could indicate where BGS is heading so modders can decide what they want to add/change after everything is said and done.

you're description of how you feel about Morrowind, Oblivion, FO3, and Skyrim is spot on for me. Exactly my experience. I think the reason Skyrim didn't hit for me is that it felt so vanilla and "normal" compared to the previous games. Morrowind had silt striders, netch, houses in trees, houses in sand, every city felt so unique and otherwordly. And with each subsequent release, the amount of mystique and magic just seemed to decrease until Skyrim, which basically felt like Norway with Dragons. It felt less like high fantasy and more like medieval fantasy or Arthurian fantasy.

A bit more than 40 hours in, I still haven’t finished a whole faction quest line, feel like I’m just scratching the surface of the main quest, customized a ship or two (barely), and haven’t even touched outpost building. I just keep finding random things that hold my attention.
I know it’s a completely different type of game, but it’s doing the same thing as Breath of the Wild did:
Send you in a vague direction, show you something interesting in the distance that distracts you, and give you something interesting and lore-filled along the way. I find myself several hours into a play session and I’ve completely forgotten about the quest I was doing, because I’m infiltrating some huge outpost connected to a giant underground area that I didn’t know was there.
I’m sure the experience will vary because of the procedural generation, but dang it all if it isn’t working PERFECTLY for me right now. I’m obsessed.

I don't know. There's the reason Earth is dead, Sol being a backwater that no one wants to be posted at, and the fact that Charles Dickens books are the most common now because everyone thought he was the author most needing preservation, so they stuffed ships full of his books when evacuating. So, many other earth books were lost or are incredibly rare. The lore is far deeper than I think most give credit.

Honestly, I thought the storylines were compelling and the gameplay loop might be the only one that keeps playing my same play through over and over again. The combat has a lot of depth and I have found my self switching play styles a lot. I understand some people’s frustration with space exploration, but I think if you had no expectations and went into this game you would have loved it ten times more than if you had these preconceived notions of what it was going to be like. I thought it was extremely cool how many dialogue options opened up once you joined all the factions and became starborn. Already it has changed my second play through like crazy and from what I’m hearing it will continue to change it in different ways many play through a later. The dialogue actually has some weight behind it as well the ryujin storyline for instance had my choices causing very different results because I decided to be evil and it had a tangible effect on the storyline in ways that I feel like is an improvement from previous Bethesda games. There is enough variety that I feel like I got more than my moneys worth and I would say it’s an amazing game. I also felt the side quest, much like you have said in your review, have a far more unique twist that I personally have loved and haven’t gotten bored of as quickly. Even with the dialogue quest where you talk to person A, then go back to person B etc. have been far more interesting due to the overall options for dialogue in general being more interesting. Overall I’m thrilled with it and I can only imagine what they do with dlc and mods are going to make my experience even better

Great video as always, as for what’s next at Bethesda, I think that’s a really tricky line to walk for them and for the consumer. I think without doubt they’ll be focused on adding a ton new things to starfield.
Things I would love to see is vehicles like moon landers to make surveying planets easier and more fun. New DLC could be a ways off but would still be fun after I’ve finished the 6 million quests I’ve currently got in my log 😂
Where this could get very bad is if Bethesda decide to over monetise starfield and go down the Fallout 76 route with subscriptions for access to certain ships or weapons and resources. This is something the company has done before so why not in the most successful of their IP. It’s a scary thought so let’s hope that doesn’t unfold.
There is still plenty of good they will achieve without really trying with starfield, so in the short term the potential looks great.

My friends and I were really hyped to have a real HQ graphics (at the time) open world to go explore in. Skyrim feels like it looks a bit duller, and also didn't invent something new as much as Oblivion did.

All that stuff felt so new and fresh. For the most part the story basically let you do whatever you wanted to do. I feel like Skyrim in retrospect was the beginning of the new Bethesda.. where a lot of the core gameplay in choices the player had were stripped down to make it more of a big AAA game everyone could enjoy and when the game developers focused more on making things bigger rather than flushing out aspects of the story and gameplay.. but I'm with you. I see the flaws of starfield and yeah I'm having an awesome time playing it.. it's scratching that itch I have to play these type of games. Bought for me maybe this is my Skyrim because it doesn't feel like anything's been added to enhance it I personally enjoy. So far not a huge fan of The starship combat and I hate as an Xbox player trying to build outposts or my own ship.. it's just not my thing. I would have loved to see maybe vehicle so I'm not running on every planet.. and the fact that I'm basically going to small maps after small map and just fast traveling instead of being forced to travel the world and find things is kind of what's missing for me.. I miss having a quest marker and having to walk for a very far away and finding things along the way that aren't just a cave or whatnot

Being able to choose how you want to approach the game as a whole just isn't there in Starfield, it feels more restrictive like Fallout 4 when it comes to your own personal story. I cant see a difference between a trucker, a miner, a rogue, a bounty hunter, a pirate, there's just not enough distinction. You are who and what the game says you are, but then it doesn't fill that out with something significant. The world is a great place to build on but it's all so binary.

One thing that I loved about oblivion that I missed in other games including skyrim was the arena. That was one of the coolest things in the game and winning cool loot for passing each arena level. Every game like this should have an arena vs computer enemies in waves or however they like throw in bosses too. More arenas in rpg please. 😂

I really like the game, even from the jump I found it super interesting and I don't think games should be punished for need a few hours of coaxing you into the world. I see a lot of people where "if it takes 3-5 hours to get into the game it's not a good game" I couldn't disagree more. I had to start the witcher 3 like 5 times because it just starts off so slow, but once I grinded through it it's one of my top 5 of all time. So I do think that the beginning does limit you a bit I don't think anyone on the fence because of that should dismiss it. I'm having a ton of fun just exploring and stuff. 50 hours in and I haven't even gotten close to finishing the story yet. I'm just doin all kinds of things cuz it's fun.

I find there’s a lot of times where it just looks flat, and half baked. Other times I’m like woah, look at that moon. The problem with Starfield is the absolute lack of depth in the game world. After about 20 hours, you have pretty much seen everything there is outside of the story. I'd personally put Morrowind first, but otherwise, this is a completely based ranking. Jake really surprised me with this one. Man, I'm so curious about Starfield, but just not 70 dollars curious. I went way over budget buying games last month so I keep needing to actively convince myself not to buy Starfield for now. I honestly haven't cared for the last few Bethesda games, FO3, Skyrim, or FO4, and Starfield looks a lot like FO4 but in space with lots of fast traveling in place of exploration. For me, I think the time spent walking between points of interest of places for quests on the map was a good pacing tool, and the idea of just fast traveling to locations instead sounds kind of awful. I don't know. I'm conflicted, because I am super curious to check it out, but also know I probably won't love it, and it's so pricy. This is why I mostly play indies.
