- Starfield (PC, Xbox Series X/S) is the next big ambitious adventure RPG from the creators of Elder Scrolls: Skyrim, Fallout 4, and more. I like this game, but I don't quite love it. Let's talk about the best aspects.

Any fallout references?
Your hair is particularly fluffy in this video Jake, I appreciate that
But is it a “ good video game-ass video game”?
that pic of your ship at 12:16 is AWESOME!!!

I love how Jake is not really a critic and just a dude who loves video games, makes it easy to trust and listen to
I would argue video game critics love games more than the average consumer
@@joshuatealeaves eh. Not everyone loves the thing they work with for a living
@@joshuatealeavescan you really love it if you’re constantly nit picking it ? you don’t do that to something you love, you accept the flaws
That's very subjective. To me, it makes him harder to trust. In my experience, honest people are not always so positive about everything. I am not talking about this video, I am talking in general about the channel. How much credibility can you give to a guy that finds a positive place no matter what he plays?
@@Alfonso88279 Tbh I'd rather listen to people who always find the good in things than people who go out of their way to be negative. Living like that is exhausting
Modded starfield in 2-3 years will be absolutely insane. Youll meet luke skywalker somewhere.
Looking forward to that lol
somebody is going to recreate star wars in starfield and I can't wait for the lightsabers
I'm so glad Xbox will have mods to. This game will be played for the next 10 years.
You will meet him in vr , you can pretty much say the vr will come one way or another.
I can't wait to see Ricardo Milos in space
When I was a kid I had this art-book that was written in the early to mid 70s. The art was a lot of illustrations of what the future could look like. The art style of Starfield and Mass Effect is sooo close. The CRT computer screens, the minimalistic hud elements, the architecture…etc…
Love it!
very 2001
This artstyle makes me think of Ridley Scott's Alien, or even Star Trek ENT. It's both minimalistic and brilliant at the same time.
BGS calls it "NASA Punk", and I could agree, if we are talking 80s and 90s NASA control panels, that were basically just repurposed IBM PCs. However, I don't know if a style that's been around this long should be renamed by Bethesda. Unless Scott, and Rick Berman, and anyone alive who worked on the 2001 Space Odyssey sets, all agree to it.
The photos you take in photo mode get put into the cycle of load screens! You can check your photo gallery in the menus, but really cool feature, even as small and inconsequential as it is, to just throw pics you’ve captured as you’re out in the galaxy
so the exact same thing 76 did. Once again zero innovation from Todd.
@@thefilmdirector1 Yoooo I heard they even added a soundtrack to Starfield?? FO76 did that too, and we all see how that went!
i was pleasantly surprised. took a pic on triton from a high mountain with neptun in the sky. pretty cool
@@thefilmdirector1finding something negative in something that really isn’t is a skill- congrats 👏 Maybe some people never played 76 and will be pleasantly surprised by that feature?
I spent like the first 4 hours walking around New Atlantis and doing side quests. I actually loved the city.
For the first 6 hours I was exploring the first planet, 6 POIs around Kreet Lab, then moved to another location on same planet and explored 5 POIs more.
I like the quest, but the city is designed very terribly. it is very hard to find what you want. such as weapon and armor shop.
@@VYMdude I tried that and was getting smacked by higher level enemies😂
@@user-vt6qo5sp8p it takes some getting used to! There’s these little kiosks through the city and if you access them, they list out the shops available to you and what district they’re located in
@@WhosStevy I looted laser sniper rifle from lvl 14 zealot killed by some thermalbeast. Then killed that beast with grenades and looted 2 more zealots for backpack and helmet :)
I feel like they should’ve started you as a prisoner who’s taken from jail to space travel w/ other inmates to mine the planet where you find the artifact and Constellation pays for you to be freed. That would’ve been a little more compelling in the opening hours
Hey... being a prisoner is an Elders Scrolls thing.... hehehe
Yea the opening is so underwhelming and almost comical compared to Skyrim and fallout 4 opening but the game is fun overall
@@sofarnotgood1349 yea now that I’m deep into it, I’m hooked. These faction quests are incredible
So just the Skyrim opening. Yep, I agree! Would have loved that 😂
I dunno. I kinda liked how it wasn't so dramatic or high stakes. You're just a regular miner and then you're thrust into adventure. The rest I can make up in my head. I'm kind of tired of a dramatic, depressing, world ending beginning. Although I wouldn't have minded if they added some new intros depending on what you picked sorta like Cyberpunk.
One thing that wowed me every time, is building your ship, adding more and more to it, and just seeing your spaceship docked on the side of a space station while your looking out the window, its really cool to see.
In Beth games, the main quest is always nothing special but more of an excuse to hook you into awesome side quests and interesting locales and characters and immersion.
I was shocked that new atlantis was not enclosed. Massive wilderness around it. I climbed a mountain and looked at it from afar. I thought that was cool.
I’m a few hours in and I am blown away with all the stuff to do and the world they’ve created.
I’m going to be at it with this game for a while.
I’m loving every second of Starfield. Hooked me from the opening moments and everything after has just made me more and more obsessed with it. It won’t be for everyone but it is definitely for me.
Thats the important thing.
I could have said the same! 3 days in lol
Having the Before You Buy and your own videos on games is really the best thing for getting a full sense of what games are like. You the man Jake!
constant loading screens is a bit of a disappointment, but i feel like a lot of people had super unrealistic expectations for this game. a "Bethesda ass Bethesda game" but set in space is exactly what i was expecting/hoping for and i can't wait to jump in! always appreciate your content man.
Kinda an issue with space games in general. Outer worlds is an example, but it's way more excusable running on an nvme rather than on old hdd. Those loading times were brutal on PS4 for the outer worlds but completely mitigated when I went back and played on PC.
That trailer they released set unrealistic expectations and Bethesda talked it up so successfully, as they should.
Also, Microsoft needed a masterpiece exclusive on their platform.
Xbox gamers have waited a long time for a hit whilst Sony knocked it out of the park for so long long. I think it was not on,y expectations but a lot of hope that Xbox would have the game of the year, finally.
Constant loading screens reminds me so much of early days Skyrim. Put me off the game as I hate entering buildings. Lol

Coming from your gameranx video, I am very happy to hear that the relationship got better the further you went along
Fallout in space is all I wanted.
Then you will be happy for sure!
I think that's all most people wanted.
@@JakeBaldino you are awesome dude
Which Fallout? The last one worthy of the name was made by Obsidian.
What you really want is Fallout in Skyrim.
If there's one thing so far that really exceeded my expectations it is the sound design. The music is so good I can hear a little bit of John Williams a little bit of Hans Zimmer I can even aliens and I can hear from Star Trek in there a little bit and I can also hear some Blade Runner. But it's not just the musically sound effects the environmental effects sounds so good everything that I hear in this game sounds fantastic
I really think that, with the way this sounds, once they go back to tes6 and scale it back down, they’ll absolutely nail it. From stepping out into the map and being able to see everything and say where do I go from here
Thanks, Jake. You always have the best takes. I’m looking forward to playing this!
Man, your channel is just amazing. Feels like talking with a good, smart friend. 10/10!
Jake is a real one. It feels like he's easy to talk to and genuinely a good person.
I said this on the Gameranx channel (and various others) and I'll say it again here since Jake confirmed it as well-
The ship builder system (and accumulating a fleet) is the only thing that made me truly excited about this game over the last few months, and I'm so glad it turned out to be one of the better aspects
Sounds like exactly what I expected to be. Thanks for the video Jake
That part about flying to a planet encountering a dungeon and getting some random loot was and always will be peak Bethesda. Wouldn't have it any other way
The problem others stated is...
■ Caves and bases have the same layout
■ Procedural creation will put almost the same enemies and loot in these areas.
So it is fun the first few times... but it seems it get too repetitive after a few planets.
Thanks for your level headed honest chat/review on Starfield, it's a great year for gaming.
It's actually a lot more fun than I expected. Loading screens can be annoying but hey, no bugs for me yet. Been running super smooth.
The modding potential looks insane. Can't wait for modders to build custom planets.

Super excited for Starfield, but for me it always seems to payoff waiting for updates/improvements/expansions on these types of games. Hope everyone playing at launch enjoys it!
That’s just modern games in general and its a shame. And this one doesn’t appear to be any different. You shouldn’t have to play 20 hours or wait for mods/updates for the game to be good
Yea I only try out games a year or two after they launch for that reason.
@@nyikomaswanganyi5983that’s fair. I’ve gamed since the early ‘90s and have always gotten too excited to wait :)
Yeah, seeming more and more like this is going to be one I wait on. Like, for example, Cyberpunk is about to get Phantom Liberty (Cyberpunk 2.0) which is supposed to completely overhaul the game. I'll probably just play that. Starfield gets an expansion early next year, I think in February. I might wait and play it then.
I hate that I took the week after release off for this game with pre-order and I'm kind of regretting it as I know I should've probably followed suit.
As with every over BGS rpg it will keep getting better and better. The appeal of Skyrim for example is BGS make you want to live in that world. It's good to slow down and really get into your character. I get the impression this game is a long term marathon not a sprint. Which I love and will be playing for years..
One of the best reviews I’ve watched all day about Starfield, I have 6 mins before I can play it and I am so hyped!
I appreciate your insight Jake. I had worried I should have waited for reviews before purchase but your thoughts put me at ease. That has very much been my experience in the first few hours. Please keep up the good work.
Jesus Christ, sometimes I forget how absolutely stellar Jakes hair is. Mind blowing.
That is fire hair
10/10 no mods needed
Glad I'm not the only one who noticed lol!
I'm a woman and I wish MY hair was that gorgeous. Damn.
Glad I'm not the only one thinking this! His hair is just so BOUNCY
This is what I wait from a Bethesda game. That it grows on you, unfolds gradually, gets more depth with every character you create, lingers constantly in your mind creating new ways to adventure.
I hate how everything is compared to other things as far as how good things are these days, instead of things being seen as their own thing. Everyone gets their expectations so beyond what is capable and overhype things that no one is ever satisfied anymore. Alot of the complaints are a given, and should have been known beforehand. Glad people are enjoying it though, and taking it for what it is.
Im really looking forward to mods. Whatever else Bethseda do, there support for modding is first class. Having so many planets is just a huge blank canvas, new companions, constant refinements outside of official content. I loved Skyrim at launch but being able to constantly refresh the experience has been great. The same for Morrowind, Fallout and Oblivion.
Bethesda outsourcing the creation of additional content to the same people who paid for the game
@@paulemcculloughthank you for pointing this out. They were planning this from the beginning. It’s straight business.
The Before you Buys and your own personal opinion on games are really the only ones I genuinely enjoy and trust. Great to hear Starfield is going to be good!
The game is nothing close to good. Forspoken is better than this trash. It's a conversation sim, not up to par graphics and tons of bugs. Copies completely(without the cool powers) from mass effect but combat toned down a lot. Ppfff even mass effect has a better story, in depth information and mandy!
@@stevendavis6157 Sorry you feel that way man. I'm about 15hrs in and I'm having a blast. Some games just aren't meant for some people and that's okay.

Jake is the next Geoff Keighley
Jake thanks for this honest and beautiful review. Like always good job!
Saw some gameplay I totally agree with that ✨ feeling when the main theme comes on and your ship takes off into space ... magical!
I saw a lot of people saying that the mods of this game would be the main focus in the future. And to those people I say this, "What is the merit of the base game if you're treating mods as a must?"
This might be a hot take, but people should stop treating a game's worth based on the mods it has or might have. Seriously, if the main focus of a game is on its mods, then it just means that the base game is lacking.
It's amazing that people think a game with literal thousands of random dialog options and scenarios won't always have sort of bug. It's the game's engine and there isn't any other dev company that makes games to this magnitude.
Exactly. What team
Other than maybe cd projekt red has created a world with as much depth and options as Bethesda? None. No game has even matched Skyrim, which is over a decade old
Rockstar?
First video I've watched from you, I liked the honest review!
Once again I go to the man I trust to be honest about a new game. Thanks for the input Jake XD Always a pleasure to watch

It's funny that prior to release Jake said that Starfield's characters and story looked uninteresting and boring but turns out he ended up liking the characters/main story quite a bit, and according to other reviews, it appears that it's arguably Bethesda's best main story yet.
I know they briefly teased something at the end of their showcase but I do hope there is some sort of “magic system” to play around with

I played around 8 hours last night and how you get involved with infiltrating a faction was one of the coolest ways I’ve been introduced to a faction quest line. I’m ready to see if there were other ways to end up where I was at from a different type of character play-through. I don’t wanna say too much since the game isn’t out for everyone, but I was under the impression that particular questline started a completely different way so I wonder if there are other fully fleshed out ways to start certain quests and such
I just started this game today. It looks so intimidating at first cuz of how big the game looks. Awesome vid!
So the general consensus seems to be its okay, but not GOTY levels of good. Just a good space game. It's amazing how quickly the hype got tempered once we got to see the actual game, and not just the fantasy in everyone's heads.
I suspected this game would be classic Bethesda and not the Star Citizen killer people seemed to think it would be, but you know, internet. It's either GOTY or the worst game of the century.
I have gone back and forth so many times today on whether I'm going to get this one. This video has me back on the right side. But I'm such a slow gamer (play too many), that with BG3, I'm not exactly dying if I end up waiting for at least some bug fixes.
I’m on a media blackout on Starfield reviews and reactions, because I just want to enjoy it and immerse myself in the game before the avalanche of reactions hits. But I had to get Jake’s take, because I trust him and love the way he presents his experiences. I booted up the game at 5pm PST on the 31st and dove right in. I’m glad I wandered off from the main quest at first to get solid with gameplay - and damn, that first experience flying the spaceship was amazing. I am loving this game so far.

First in line for the Firefly mod. Everyone get behind me.

I'd love a Futurama themed mod for sure.
I'm playing right now and I remembered you said there's no 'holy shit' moment like walking out of the sewers in Oblivion for the first time. Dude, when you walk out onto that moon for the first time and you see the ship come down, that was that moment for me.
Nice! I always check out Jake's/Gameranx and Mortismal Gaming's reviews of new releases and these guys got me excited about the game. Mortym has a 50+ minute review of the game after putting 120 hours into it.
My biggest gripe with Fallout was always the gunplay. Dunno what it was specifically and part of it was definitely I tried to play it on console 1st and I hate playing fps games on controller, but I came back to it on PC much later and it still didn’t quite work for me. Glad that seems to be a solid area in starfield for you as it was my main concern with getting it. I can deal with jank in a Bethesda game but the combat needs to be fun
If it can be modded it will be great. I hope Bethesda realized how modders keep their games interesting. They need to make a game that facilitates that. I want a good base game, sure, but I will be playing it for years if modders can have their way with it. I put in hundreds and hundreds of hours in Skyrim on Xbox 10 years ago but I just put together my first PC about a year ago and am playing Skyrim (and fallout 4) again because of hard working modders

I really like that you're objective about the game. That's the shit that separates the true game journalists from the schills and the tryhards. The interT00bZ has either made it out to be the Second Coming of Cheezuz or incapable of meeting it's own hype (which between the schills and Bethesda, that hype bar is really fucking high). Jake just says "this is cool, this is wack," and if there's more pluses than minuses, he says as much.
The schills are giving the game Royal Mr. Handys (if you catch my drift), the haters are making it out to be Fallout 77. Jake is a real game jouralist because he knows the goal isn't getting in a company's good graces, or chasing clout by trashing anything that isn't perfect... Why do people want to hate this game so badly? Is it so amazing that the developers that have made some of the most successful and popular games in history would make another good game?
There isn't room for mediocre games in 2023.
You do know the answer...It's an Xbox exclusive. No Bethesda game was scrutinized this much before. They released broken games before and were still given great scores.
The worlds most powerful console putting out the worlds most mediocre games!🤣
@@Keebler311After Baldur’s Gate 3 people said they wanted games that were finished on release without microtransactions and lots of content that developers had put their heart into. Well Starfield ticks all those boxes and is very ambitious and tonnes of hours of quality side quests, do whatever you want game, yet people love to hate on it. It’s not a perfect game but it still doesn’t make any sense how much hate it’s getting. Gamespot and IGN giving it a 7? Like c’mon everyone knows that 7 means a bad game to these companies.
@@Keebler311 There isn't room for mediocre games for Xbox . they have literally zero good exclusive game for 9th generation
