it makes me so happy you see the similarities between your fiance and the mc
Poor Richard getting roasted more than the food.
@@-nav-398 I mean, can only speak for myself but when you get diagnosed you usually stop taking it as a roast, and more like-
".... Yeeeeahhhh..... That is me, you right-"
@@LucasF25 Aw sorry bud, I wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad. Just out here doing very poor food puns.
@@-nav-398 ahssk naaaah, you good, buddy.
Laois is like one of the most autistic-coded characters i have ever seen, i love him so much and it's so cool to have a protagonist like this
Yeeeeah, he's a fucking walking disaster
Mood
100% this. Every autistic person I know takes one look at him and goes "He's me for real" and honestly I LOVE that the author went with this, great representation.
@@fastballncs tbh the only reason he didn't click with me at first is because in this anime i often feel myself relating more to our elf girl who's just grossed out by all of their Monster food shenanigans.
Being a picky eater too is common among us, after all.
That aside, hell yeah, i totally see it now.
@@LucasF25I feel like the whole party is so relatable in the sense that there is at least one of them you relate to, and we haven't even got our last member yet. Also I am a Senshi through and through.
Bro definitely has autism and adhd. I have both, and I relate to laios so bad I am literally him fr
Yeah, glad you're starting to understand Laios a bit better. Minor correction though: he is not so much a food nerd, more like a monster ecology nerd. His interest in how they taste came as a collateral effect of his hyperfixation.
also from that monster gourmet book he´s been reading for so long
I thought the way they did living armor in this was ingenious. I don't know if I've ever seen living armor portrayed as a mollusk before.
Spiders, ants, or some collage of pest in general are the go to if it’s not magic, mollusks are definitely a unique choice
I can assure you no XD
it's a reason why I enjoy the anime makes interesting changes to generic fantasy creatures so they can become food so bigger changes like this makes the world more fun.
@@BaeBunniI love how they did mimics
When you consider that Laios has never and likely will never be properly medicated, his behavior makes a lot more sense.
22:50 So fun little thing about this series, Senshi is the ONLY character in the manga that gets the pantie shot. Even when situation might result in someone else showing panties, Senshi is the only one who ever does. It's one of my favorite gags the manga has and am so happy they carried it over to the anime.
That's because Shensi is hands down the hottest character in the group. He is *the* thirst trap.
I've heard Senshi described as 'the Daddyest Daddy in all Anime right now' and you know what, yeah.
Perfect thirst trap for Daddy lovers.
And just like that, Laios went from yapping bystander into a neurodivergent baby.
I feel so seen from Laios. He's a weirdo with a hyperfixation on some shit that nobody else cares about. He's just like me frfr.
Same here. Including his near lack of social skills.
To this day i never met someone who can keep up with me on talking about mythology at all
Granted, that'd be much easier to find if i actually had a social life, but that's besides the point!
@@LucasF25 Any specific mythologies? You got me hooked.
@@alexanderstavroulakis335 i mean, greek, egyptian and nordic are always fair game, but japanese Yokai are a weak spot fot me. Though really, finding out about legends ive never heard of from anywhere in the world anytime
@@LucasF25 Classics. I've been looking up Inuit mythology recently.
It is absolutely fair and valid to criticise the MC for overthinking and not acting, but I'm also so glad you recognised that him stopping to observe the Living Armors move and recover was exactly what helped him to figure out what they are and how to beat them.
22:40 I still find it amusing watching many people expecting the slime and the man-eating plant parts to go pervy only for them not to. Only for them to make it to this part.
Admittedly, while I dislike assigning mental or neurological disorders to characters when the creator hasn't done so (and sometimes when they do), Laios has WAY too many aspects of High-Functioning Autism and ADHD that it being a coincidence seems unlikely. This, coming from a High-functioning Aspie with ADHD.
Also, the idea of the Living Armor being Mollusks like scallops and mussels is honestly so weird and out-of-the-box for magical monsters that I have no choice but to commend the creator of the manga for making such a move. It's honestly very creative and the idea has so much ground for experimentation and hypotheticals. Like, could you train a full suit of these buggers? As in, train them to work WITH the wearer and act like a suit of power armor? And what about weaknesses? Are they extra weak to fire, lightning and acid given their metallic shell and muscular network mimicry? This is how you make a creative change that leads to the right kinds of questions.
Honestly, I hadn't even thought of the idea of domesticated Living Armors. It's crazy how much this silly change expands the possibilities of this common dungeon monster. Like, you could even train them as extra party members to boost your numbers without spending your magic on summons (or in addition to summoning magic). I'm definitely using these if I ever DM a game of D&D or something.
Fair.
But i like doing it a lot, and this was a very easy call to make, lol
this man simply exemplifies the ADHD Asperger's struggle too well to not define him as such, I'll respect the authors if they want to say he isn't but I would have to attribute that akin to them intentionally ignoring that he is what he is.
(This from a formerly defined 'quiet spacey' fellow as well)
this whole comment has me thinking of the Bio Power Armor Samus had in Metroid Fusion
but the DnD route/ medieval Game Item is just too exciting to navigate; I'd go with it being Plus 2x Strength but double water type weaknesses and maybe Damage over Time when their strength is in use-Oh! like maybe to train the armor it's cursed to zap you a little to keep the mollusks malleable to your input.
@@jaysuscrass9119 i don't think most mangakás Care enough to prove or disprove something like that, so it's fair game imo
Honestly I HATE character who are written to be Autistic characters (mostly cause' the writers 9 out of 10 butchers what being on the spectrum even is like) but I REALLY enjoy characters who might have some traits but aren't ever called out for being on the spectrum.
As a wise man once said: "Write characters WITH Autism not Autistic characters"
It becomes increasingly clear over time that the author of Dungeon Meshi spent a *lot* of time thinking about how the ecology of the world would work, and did their best to make the dungeon itself feel like a place where people and things actually live, rather than just a place where adventurers go for loot and XP.
I love this series so much because the Mangaka really went the extra mile in thinking about the little details of classical monsters and how they could have an ecological explanation in-universe! It's the kind of logical fantasy world-building that I absolutely DEVOUR as someone that read(s) a lot of Brandon Sanderson novels.
I see what you did here.
Ah, I recognize a classic D&D strategy: send the guy in plates armor sneak around for the sneak attack on the leader. 😂
Glad you figured out Laois! He's definitely got some ADD stuff going on, but he's even more strongly autism coded, which you'll see develop in later episodes. I love how this episode shows him using his strengths of observation and thoughtfulness to figure out what's going on with the living armor. It's something the series will continually show. He's such a fascinating protagonist for all of those reasons. And the living armor itself is so creative!
Frankly I only see him as autism coded. As an ND I hate when a neurotypical has family/friends that are ND and are suddenly experts on ALL of us. Like no, we are all different, we express it differently. Sit down.
@@kailynchen Fair. My friends with autism often discuss the similarities between that and adhd. In my own experience with adhd I've also related to some depictions of autism. It's not an explicit part of the text, so I think there's room for different readings based on your experience.
@@kailynchen ???? You literally solved your own problem?? You said you don't see him as ADHD coded, but then you said that everyone is different and not every person will have the same experience-
Besides, most people with Autism have ADHD as well. Not always, but very often. I don't see the issue
Man, I have ADHD and it has impacted my life in super significant ways, but people around me don't understand the little things that get difficult for me and it kills me every time. It was so touching how matter-of-factly and tenderly you talked about your fiance having ADHD and how obvious it is you have made an effort to understand his mindset and how it affects him. Sending my love to you both, thanks for this.
When you said "The worst thing you can do with someone who has ADHD is get frustrated with them, because they're already frustrated with themselves" I was just thinking "He is so fucking lucky to have you because YOU FUCKING GET IT" you understand the ADHD so well with that one sentence
Laios quirky fixations are a lot of fun. Also this is definitely the most unique take on living armor because every other time it's either: magic (extremely common), ghost/souls (FMA), or cursed. This episode definitely bumped up my score overall for this anime. Thanks for the video.
4:33
resurrection is with limitation in this world, the anime will soon cover that part, if it doesn't cut that part from the manga which I am sure it won't since it's important world building bit.
@21:30 That's exactly what makes Laios awesome, imo. It's not like he's just zoning out when the first armor reassembles itself, he's actively observing the monster's behavior, and that's why he so frequently knows what to do when they encounter monsters -- he's more observant than action-oriented, and he always takes something away from his experiences that he can use. You'll see examples as the show goes on of other adventurers who jump into action a lot more readily than Laios and end up paying for it.
I don't know, as a tabletop gaming nut, I like the approach of having the party leader be as much of a strategist as a fighter. It always grates on me a little when anime protagonists can be expert warriors while simultaneously coming up with genius tactical analysis. I know that's kind of just how the medium is, but it does mean that more grounded characters can sometimes feel like they're just dopes.
The band that do the Opening is called Bump of Chicken.
They did, Battle Blood Blockade, Spy X family S2, and more anime that I don't know or don't remember them doing like with Pokemon and One Piece.
they also famously made a fan-MV for the manga "March comes in like a lion", which actually contributed to getting the anime made, and they got the honor of making the actual first OP song for the show
I met them thanks to Pokemon MV they did.
Bump of Chicken sounds very appropriate for a cooking anime
I first heard of them in the tales of Abyss opening
I love how they show and not tell that dwarves, at least Senshi, have a higher heat tolerance than the other races. The hot oil burning Laios yet Senshi just sticking thumb in the oil last episode. Senshi toss the grilled armor to Laios. Senshi doesn't seem bothered by it while Laios recoils in pain.
Fun Fact in the English Dub Liaos is voiced by Damian Haas from SMOSH and Shinshi is voiced by the ever loved SongWon aka ProZD.
Richard figured it out. "No" is the better way. I can't count how many times I got into undesirable situations by defaulting to "huh? Yes."
I think any fantasy media that likes to play around with things like this is always good. I think it's the only time I heard of "living armor" being basically a fantasy clam.
Living magic Armor is seen in so much fantasy series, but I've never seen them being explained as basically walking clams, only the shell is armor.
Laios is like if late night wikipedia reading were a person
He just like me fr
Well, it's not that the fancy armor waited for Laïos to monolog, it's that it was playing defensively. Also, they aren't the swiftest or most coordinated creatures around.
I think its so runny that you recognised laios' neurodivergent emmediatly. When i saw his character i was like "yep, this dude is just like me. He got the tism and the adhd"
I love Bump of chicken they have been going since 1994 and still have the same members one of my favorite songs of theirs is Karma the opening song to my favorite game Tales of Abyss
As an ADHD boy with a zoology hyperfixation, I’m personally offended by you dragging Laios every episode 😭
BITCH I ain’t dragging him. I’m engaged to a man like him 😂 open ya damn ears
@@Aliciaxlife sorry, I absolutely commented while watching the first half of the video
17:55 Dragon Slayer Ornstein? we’re screwed.
I know it's not the point of this video, but it's refreshing to see someone so concisely state what having adhd is like. Cause yea, i AM also frustrated by my own lack of focus, oftentimes more than other people are. It's just really nice to see someone who doesn't have it (afaik, sorry for assuming if im wrong) have that understanding, since so many people dont and just assume we're being lazy/rude
Kui is notorious for giving panty shots to Senshi. Grundle and all.
Honest to god Laios is so much more relatable than most anime protagonists. Love this neurodivergent king
Honestly, him and Legoshi from Beastars rank pretty friggin high for me on how relatable they are. It's not exactly like I haven't wondered if you could cook and eat a Terrasque in D&D before. What would they taste like anyway?
Side note, I still think it's funny that Marcille and Haru from Beastars share the same Japanese voice actress.
Ngl Laois, despite not being called out as being on the spectrum, is becoming an iconic spectrum character for me lmao
Honestly I HATE character who are written to be Autistic (mostly cause' the writers 9 out of 10 butchers what being on the spectrum even is like) but I REALLY enjoy characters who have the traits but aren't ever called out for being on the spectrum.
As a wise man once said: "Write characters WITH Autism not Autistic characters" - Rad Chad
(same man also said Autistic people FUCK and amen to that brother)
Your rant about adhd made me feel so heard!!! 😭 for like the first time ever!! You just became one of my favorite youtubers!!!
Since the original author, Ryoko Kui, is a woman, it may be even more interesting to look for points of empathy from the viewpoint of the same gender!
日本からいつも楽しく動画を拝見させてもらってます🌸
The way I'm viewing the situation with Laios looking, contemplating and trying to figure things out during the Armor Run is that it's a *joke*, time doesn't conveniently stop for him so he can exposition dump the audience about current affairs, what he thinks is wrong and why things are happening the way they are during that .0001 second, because they "think that fast"... fuck that noise. The situation continues onward as it normally would, and I'd like to say he did learn about the last time he did something like that, in saying that the party needs to move so they don't get caught lacking by his distracted ass.
During the first episode it had more of an impact because it actually cost him something and to shock the viewer into understanding that mechanic of the show. And from what I understand he does own up to his mistakes and immediately tries to rectify them.
dungeon meshi is a slow burn ngl, but it is still fire
Oh yeah, a lot of the material is given to world building and character development is such small ways sometimes. They seem like a bunch of weirdos but they really are skilful as an adventurers group as well. But man, the manga go to dark places later on.
Yeah and it's great while things are slow. Then the story takes off and it's just depression and mindfuckery all the way down (but also still great).
A+ series, love it much.
God I love the world building in this series. Seriously, slugs controlling a suit of armor? Who thinks of that?
17:54 Oh shit, it's Dragonslayer Ornstein!
I unironically LOVE Laios' monologues even right from episode 1 because it reminds me of how to tackle RPGs. So much more satisfying than those other instant revelations like you say.
I don't know, to me it's obvious that Laios's internal monologuing is timed differently than external actions. It's clearly not 1:1 at least, so I find it kinda unfair to keep blaming him for not acting in every little situation, especially when he tries to understand his enemy and come up with a strategy to win. Most of the time I really don't think he could do anything because time runs much faster than it seems, which is probably mostly due to the amount of information that needs to be compiled to the viewer. Don't get me wrong he does zone out, but I think we are only talking about 2-3 seconds most of the time. XD
Laios HAS to be neuro divergent in some way
The ecology of this dungeon is amazing
As someone with adhd, I wish more people were like you
Dungeon Meshi is a slow burn. Works on comedy and world building for a while, but the tension will kick in! And then do remember there must be a reason Studio Trigger, of all options, picked this up. Hehe.
Hey Alicia just wanna let you know about Asobi Asobase cause i think it'd be a riot.
I second this.
Asobi, Nichijou, and Daily Lives of Highschool Boys. The trinity of chaotic school anime.
Yeah this episode really did it for me
Damn, I knew Rich was a catch and a half, but I didn't know he was THAT adorable! You go girl! = P
Is weird to see triggered doing something without fanservice, well cept for senshi.
yeah that mc hate was crazy to point bro could breath wrong and she would drag him, like in the first ep with the slim elf girl wasn't paying attention and got slime but that some how is the mc fault even tho he was trying to warn her bet if it was the mc whom wasn't paying attention she would be like "that what he get for not paying attention"
*whispers*
"ooh you found his saack."

Today I learned that the myth is true : hand holding CAN indeed get you pregnant.
i probably like this anime more then most since more or less every time i kill a DnD monster i ask my dm how i can make food out of it. and when this anime which is litarally DinD where the campaign is kill monster and eat them. while the main plot is save your dead sister before the time limit... if someone told me this was a D&D campaign of the author i would not hesitate to believe them

You should watch the devil is a part-timer. I think you would like it
Neurodivergence Gang, rise up 😂😂😂😂😂
Sometimes observation does reward you, just sometimes at the expense of your teammate's life
Oh my god poor laois
Autistic king Laios 🙏
Hey you should have a listen to the English VAs in your own time. They do a really good job.
Not sure if it's ADHD or just a 'character observes enemies movements and notices something' scene
Hi Alicia, I was wondering if you'll react to S2 of Dangers In My Heart, I know you liked the first season and this season has been serving so many good moments
28:50 Laios will start the stomach rumbling
Rich is lucky to have an understanding fiancé like you
The only fan service I approve of is Senshi fan service!
Old Alicia, especially during CSM, is just Laois but for animation and cinematography, speaking of can I borrow anyone’s notes from Alicia’s lectures, I wasn’t listening
I wonder if Laois has Pica or something
Ah shit he's me. XD I can't take the meds for it due to other reasons, but yeah, I zone out a lot : s
Hey Alicia I highly recommend you check out Welcome to Demon School Iruma kun. It’s an underrated series outside of Japan. It’s an amazing feel good series full of what you would call babies
22:36 the only acceptable fanservice, for the sexiest dorf around town
so i guess it's a... sentient weapon?
It never occurred to me to compare Laios to someone with ADD, ADHD, or on the autistic spectrum.
SPOILER ALERT BELOW:
Do not read further if you have neither watched or finished watching this video.
As far as the Living Armor in this anime is concerned, I originally thought that they were possessed by spirits or, as they thought, controlled by a magic user. The idea that the suits of armor being inhabited by molluscs/shellfish is the most creative take on the Living Armor monster archetype I've ever seen. I commend the author for coming up with this clever idea.
The next time you bring your fiancé onto one of your videos, you should give him an avatar that looks like Laois.
It's not so much ADHD as it is Analysis Paralysis. Also holding hands makes babies confirmed.
I can’t believe the Catholic Church was right about premarital hand holdies
How come you don't have an Adventuresome Avatar? You'd look really cute as like a little SHOUTY Elf/Knume Nun/Preistess/Healer.
Senshi the best waifu frfr

Day 190 of asking Alicia to play Nier:Automata!!
I just need Alicia to stop calling everyone who isn't Laois a side character. They're an ensemble cast. They're all the protaganist. The actual side characters come in later.
How did you watch the entirety of Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure, and you still don’t understand that talking is a free action? Whenever people are internally monologuing or thinking, they’re not wasting time. All of that happened in under a second IRL.
I'm honestly getting a little tired of the constant pausing to dunk on Laois.
I know this is going to sound very rude but you really are not good at observing what he is doing or looking your more focused on his IQ.
Damn is Alicia so far off with her understanding of Laios and blind with hatred. Laios is a monster fanatic. Not just to eat, but he wants to know them. So anytime something different or unexpected happens with monsters, he tries to figure it out. She gives the man no fucking credit.
What?

Ok. The zoning out isn't part of ADHD. It's part of being a man. It's called The Nothing Box. It's when a man just kinda phases out of reality and achieves a state of pure enlightenment. We don't know what's happening around us. If we respond, it's a reflex. Eventually, we will return to earth. ADHD might make him visit his nothing box more often, but the root is him being a man.
As a non man with adhd can confirm you acquire the nothing box if you have adhd
