    To be fair, Laios waited until people were eating and tension lowers before making his case after organizing his toughts clearly. It's almost politically clever for him.

      Not to mention, the Orc chief asked him 2 questions first, Why do you want to go to the depths? then what he'd do if he gained control of the castle (which is the assumed motive of most adventurers)? Laos didn't have an answer for the second question, and the conversation moved on from there. Not to mention, the Orc Chiefs' response gave him something to think about, which probably occupied a lot of his thoughts for a while.

      @@LucasF25as far as I heard First edition Orcs on D&D were drawn as Pig men, and that was the edition that made it to Japan in the way of RPG

      This will be an interesting history lesson.
      ...
      ...
      In the old TSR settings of DnD orcs where drawn as pig-men, to avoid the ire of the Tolkien estate no doubt.
      Even more interesting,
      if you ever wanted to know why Japanese Kobolds are dog people instead of mini dragonmen......
      ..its because in the Japanese edition of the Chronicles of Mystara DnD books (There's an old arcade video-game for this btw)
      ,the printers screwed up and put an image of Gnolls on the kobold picture and Vice Versa,
      they didnt have descriptions too, so there was no way to tell it was wrong.
      Incidentally, Gnolls do not show up at all in Japanese media, as most players likely saw them as inferior Lizard men thanks to the switch.
      ...
      Basically it's an IT error thay caused it, although the DnD pig orcs did hold some influence in the west.
      If you ever reread lord of the rings you'll realise there's no description of Tusks among the orcs, that was due to DnD giving that association. If you depigify the tsr orc image you'll be left with a very savage looking Tusked humanoid.
      Elder Scrolls also does similarly, while they have an almost Tolkien origin, Orcs are usually called Pig-children in setting. There is even a lore book named that.

    • @catmatt777

      Yeah, the tradeoff to how they're doing things is that it is not the fastest way. Having to hunt or gather food all of the time and then sit down and properly cook every meal is not quick, but they're never going to reach a point where they are just completely out of food with no way to get more, and they aren't going to be slowly weakened by a poor diet.
      They're never going to be progressing the fastest, but they will. just. keep. progressing.

  • @bthsr7113
    @bthsr7113 Před 6 měsíci +50

    Rushing might seem like a good idea, but if they get seriously injured, tired, or malnourished, that would compromise the rescue mission. Heck, their hunger was part of why they got beaten by the Red Dragon. Bessides, Laios' initial plan was to go solo, which would have made it easier for him to evade monsters to go fast. But with a party of four, he can't be as sneaky or evasive. And quite frankly.... I doubt it would have worked anyway. So while they should avoid unnecessary detours and could maybe go faster, they do have to be careful of overexertion, since it would be really bad if they made it to the dragon and all got eaten with no one to res them.
    For reference on how fast they're going, each new hairstyle of Marcille is a new day.

    The odd thing I like is that, for what looks like an unorthodox comfort Fantasy, this has strangely deep and good worldbuilding. Like, the history is as rich and deep as a 1ft cauldron of chocolate dip. I actually want to know more about the wars between Orcs and other Humanoids. Like, did Orcs really shoot first or was it a misunderstanding that set off building tensions?
    Plus, the very fact that this anime is the first fantasy ANYTHING I've found that acknowledges using Golems as farms is ridiculous. That idea is brilliant. Like, they're bodyguards AND food production. Like, it's a genius combination. Not only do the golems produce delicious vegetables and ingredients on the go, but the roots reinforce them and make them stronger by holding the soil tightly together. Y'know, similar principles behind Erosion prevention. Even add small stones for airation and animal remains from hunting, and you get a mobile greenery guard that packs an extra punch.
    Side Note: If I don't find a D&D wizard story that has Planter Golems, I will be very disappointed.
    Side-side note: it's generally not a good idea to use human feces as fertilizer unless you treat it for parasites. If you've ever seen photos of North Korean escapee remains, you'll get why. If you need fertilizer, fish remains and animal feces generally work very well, especially crushed bone meal and cow crap

    • @MagicalMaster
      @MagicalMaster Před 6 měsíci +18

      Orcs don't even have to shoot first. Wars like that can easily kick off if two societies with differing values clash.
      Imagine that the elves are a farming and ranching society. And the orcs are hunter gatherers that follow the game trails. The elves have a nice farming community and then an orc scout spots some of their crops or animals from a distance. So the whole tribe rocks up because they think they hit the motherload and not even think that the food was someone else's and then the war is on. Because without that food the elves will starve and die. But to the orcs that food is rightfully theirs, they found it so they get to eat it.
      It's far too easy for wars like that to kick off.

  • @GoldenKaos

    The fastest way to get to his sister is the route that reliably gets them down there safe and well-fed. If they go a "faster" route that goes through a bunch of unneccessary fights and/or parts of the dungeon where they can't easily source food, they'll either get wiped out again, or have to retreat - worst case scenario all the way back to the surface, best case scenario back up to an earlier point in the dungeon where they can recover and try again, but still losing valuable time while doing so.
    Remember that they don't have any supplies or rations to fall back on (besides whatever ingredients Senshi happened to have with him) because they re-entered the dungeon immediately after being wiped out and losing all their supplies. The trade-off they decided to take by immediately going back down to recover Falin was that they would have to source food along the way, which means sometimes taking detours. They are necessarily going to have to move slower than if they had fully supplied above ground, which wasn't really an option given their financial straits. Taking detours to ensure they remain fully supplied is, if anything, maximising the chances that they reach Falin in time.

    While there probably aren't any "toilet monsters" in the setting of Dungeon Meshi, there is a monster with a similar concept in D&D: the Otyugh. Like that weird tentacle thing living in the Death Star's trash compactor, the Otyugh is an omnivorous detritivore/scavenger that feeds on the kind of filth & waste that nothing else will eat (because _something_ has to eat Dragon dung) and they can sometimes be found in the dumps & sewer systems of humanoid settlements. You might not guess it from looking at an Aberration with three elephantine legs, gross stony skin, a pair of long spike-tipped tentacles, an eyestalk with 3 eyeballs, and an enormous maw filled with needle-like teeth that can probably give you half a dozen different plagues if they touch you, but Otyughs are actually intelligent enough to speak & understand Common, and they typically won't attack you unless they feel threatened or are literally starving (plus they serve the important ecological role of keeping the dungeons free of rotting carrion, filth, & waste).
    On a similar note, there's an actual Japanese Yōkai called the _Akaname_ ("filth-licker") that lives exclusively in dirty old restrooms and feeds on mold, grime, excrement, and hair clogging up the drains by licking it up with a long tongue. If only we could put one of them in every gas station in North America, the toilets might become clean enough to actually use.

Oceans added a lavish 3d world instead of a top-down perspective. Which you explore on the back of a giant golem. Wandering the seas looking for dungeons, islands and fighting sea beasts for materials. Highly underrated.

    I didn't see anybody stating this but I felt the need to clarify that you should, in no circumstances, use human feces for fertilizer or fertilizer production. The reason we use animals feces is because the chance of them attracting disease inducing things, parasites especially, increase dramatically if we were to use human feces, as those parasites are more likely to be ones that will harm or target humans. Besides that, as someone with years of experience as a cleaner in general for homes and businesses, I can say without a doubt, cleaning up almost any kind of animal shit is less gag-inducing and much less gross than cleaning up any people shit.

    Ali havinf ADHD is one thing but image having ADHD combine with schizophrenia and psychosis.
    Yesterday I was talking to someone and at the same time I was running a simulation in my head of a theoretical conversation between two characters in the world I invented for the novel. And during this non-existent conversation, one of the characters gave some facts... paused for a moment, then connected certain events and came up with a theory that shocked ME. And I was so incredibly excited by this discovery that I changed the topic of the conversation I was actually having. And I started rambling that "I KNOW, I finally know why these two races have been fighting each other for thousands of years. Because race A is probably the former race C, which created race B. Race B rebelled against C, and to avoid extinction they developed technology thanks to which they became race A. But the war did not stop."
    The person I was talking to was surprised, but more so by the fact that he hadn't heard about Race C. So the whole conversation turned to talking about what, apparently, was the result of my experience in my own head.

    I find it a bit hypocritical of Senshi to be apprehensive of magic, when he kinda utilizes it all the time. And not just with the golems. You could argue that most to everything in this entire dungeon is magic based, considering it was all created by an obscenely powerful mage. And, if Senshi is so against taking "shortcuts" then he isn't allowed to use weapons. Cause weapons are a "shortcut" to kill an opponent. Can't use tools for building either, cause that's a "shortcut" for construction. Senshi assumes, like many other anti-magic characters in fiction, that magic requires no effort. Which in most to all settings, is not the case.

    • @tenjenk
      @tenjenk Před 28 dny

      Senshi does not have an issue with magic, its a natural part of the world. He has issues with magic wielders using it for degenerative convenience which weakens people to fall back on all the time, especially if they're left without it. Places turn into dungeons through sufficient abundance of magical and magical energy from a mass amount of spirits (germ like kind). The place itself turned into a dungeon itself as such places are want to do, but what the mage has done has impose artificial factors that do not occur in other dungeons, name the anti-death magic which other dungeons do not have and which Senshi is also very uncomfortable with.
      The examples you're mentioning are outside the context of what he's stating. Theres a nuance to utility and tools vs lazy over-convenience and dulling of ability.
      That being said, dwarves do have an aversion to magic and while Senshi is more open than most, he still has certain cultural prejudices and a lack of exposure to magic. He does get better about it as the show goes on and he learns more about the nature of magic. Tho he still insists on not depending on shortcuts.
