I've seen Linus rage about tech, but even at "Apple purposely making repairs impossible" levels, I've never seen him gesture this wildly and scratch and paw all over his face like a crackhead looking for a fix. This rant was epic.
He was a house painter when he had nothing but passion and bills; it's finally found a vent, because I imagine he paid more money for this job than he received in his entire career as a painter. :)
I would totally watch LRT (Linus Renovation Tips) after seeing how passionate he is about paint.
My dad painted houses for 35 years, and I helped him for a few summers. I know this rant well haha.
Because he doesn't have to live in an apple product, as opposed incorrectly painted house.
Before Technology, he was his own boss… as a painting company. He cares about his paint.
he paid them for a specific job, and they did something else. The rant is totally justified, if you did this to a big company factory they'd have fines in the contract for doing this and delaying the project.

That depends... I work for a big factory. No contractor will take a job with us with fines. The number of times we have had to fix stupid contractor mistakes....almost every time.
But then again we're not 'big' these days. We're only doing $200k HVAC upgrades.
you are actually on point there. you are paying for a specific service. its not something "hey buddy it's all up to you on the paint you will be using. go ham on it man". and it's probably not cheap so you have to give what the customer asked for.
Pretty common in the Vancouver area pretty much every company doing residential work is no better then a flyby night probably the only person ticketed is the owner the rest are skids off the street slapping paint on walls for minimum wage.
@@Morberis I read about the fines on the news regarding govt contracts for building roads and bridges; not in Canada. There was also an opposite condition that if the contractor finishes the work to spec, ahead of time, they'll get a bonus. So I guess in this case they'd put up with it.

I live this shit for 50+hrs/week running a paint store. He's wrong about the paint & primer, eg-shell vs satin, and oil-based paint for ceilings.
@@fartface7447 i wouldnt really say misinformed since before he was in tech his main income was being a painter. i would personally be more inclined to trust someone with first hand job experience vs someone that just sells the paint to the people that actually have to do the work. There can be a large difference between what things should be/do and what they actually are/do. im not saying your outright wrong but im not saying your outright right.

Just now I realized I was confusing Linus and Colin Furze old jobs, I though Linus was a plumber and Colin a painter
Oh I thought he was just an employee. Didn't realize he ran the business. But after this rant, it makes total sense.
I didn’t know Linus was a professional painter, but as someone who worked in blue collar fields, this kinda stuff always makes me laugh. When a contractor tries to pull the wool over a customers eyes and the customer hits them with a Ron Swanson “I know more than you.” Maybe on their next job they’ll think more about doing it right the first time instead of wanting to get it done quick and attempting to outsmart the client.

This is actually not a rant. It is a very detailed and educational video for paint. WE. WANT. MORE. PAINT TIPS! LPT! LPT!
They messed with the wrong guy. I love how Linus rants about stuff, he did his job properly and he honestly expects others to do their job correctly as well.
I'm incredibly patient with people who are not at my level of knowledge on a subject, as long as I get the impression that they're actually listening and genuinely want to learn. I'll explain and explain again and again, try to be as positive as I can with my feedback and I'll compliment them on a job well done, even if it's not great yet but I know they'll do better in the future.
But just like Linus, I don't want to deal with incompetence, no matter whether it's born out of ignorance or laziness.
@@RudyBleeker The one issue with that is when you hire a professional, you are hiring them to be competent and knowledgable.
There is no leeway for a willingness to learn at that point since you are paying them to know what they are doing.

We're a family of painters - my dad has his own paint contracting business, both his brothers are painters, and their had had one before him until he retired.
Mostly doing large buildings, manufacturing and the like, but occasionally some execs house. To this day, though I've not consistently painted daily in 12 years, my wife still groans every time we enter a new place as I cant help but point out so many massive failures when they're so glaringly obvious.
I feel this rant at a primal level.
Bro I’ve painted for 15 years my wife does the same thing hahaha we go anywhere and I see all the fuck ups lol. The only thing I disagree with him on is super paint isn’t a bad product. I do agree paint primer is a gimmick. I prime and the 2 coat.

The biggest thing that always gets to dad, well all of us really, whenever we walk into a place that has an active job site is the amount of tape that is used. Tape on everything. Tape around every door jam, taper around every window, tape around every outlet.... "If you can't cut a straight lthe straight line, then get a different job!" 🤣

It's absolutely not less work to go in and fix the imperfections after like he said, these guys just have single digit IQs
He's right about 'by the job' and 'by the hour' not being the same, but 'by the hour' at least ensures you're paying for what you receive. When you pay 'by the job', a worker is incentivised to complete that job to the bare minimum of time investment required & then immediately go to the next job. More jobs in a week means more pay. Why spend more time than it "necessary" to earn that cash?

Man, the part where he described seeing the satin paint, explicitly telling them “you’re not gonna use that on the walls” and then having them do exactly that hits way too close to home. I swear there’s nothing worse than being part of a project where you see someone poised to do exactly the wrong thing, tell them *specifically* what *not* to do and then they do it anyway.

wait until he sees how some car paint shops paint their cars, as someone who was scolded at 15 by dad for orange peeling paint... the amount I see as acceptable in cars today hurts my effin brain. Then you ask if they wet sand and they give the "what's that? look".
@@KOSAMAGAMES Pretty well every GM vehicle for over a decade. My buddy owns a paint shop and he said you wouldn't believe how people would pick up their brand new car and drive it over to him to wet sand and fix orange peel.
guess the price is also so low that even with orange peel people come back?
over here orange peel would make you legal to sue the painter and just getting a bad reputation for colour matching can get the shop bust even if it was a single occurrence, but then the price of just repainting a bumper in same colour as it was is fast 15000 NOK here (1700 USD)

(Also at my old house which we were renting from, they put goddamn flat paint on the walls. Nothing ever comes out of flat paint, literally nothing.)
I thought flat paint was good in areas like the garage because you can touch it up easier? Where eggshell it isn't as easy to fix scuffs
@@erickshaffer6615 You can't clean flat paint. Generally the more gloss the easier it is to clean. But the more reflection thus you see the imperfections easier. But I feel like its a little unfair to put so much emphasis on egshell vs satin, as it does vary greatly from brand/product to brand/product. Some eggshells have more sheen than some Satins. There is a standard way to measure it, but there isn't a standard for the words "eggshell and satin"
If Linus was this picky, he should have specified the exact brand and product of paint to be used. Especially right now as at times it is difficult to get paint due to current global supply.

Scuffs? Easy touchup. My interior is dead flat white. Love it.
It's cheaper and when you move out they can charge you for a new paint job because the old one will be "dirty".

As a contractor you weren’t being a bad customer. Customers that save me from a stupid mistake are my favorite!
actually as a painter of many years, that putty example you gave is the best and fastest way I've learned to do it through experimentation (hundreds if not thousands of houses at this point). The rationale they gave you on that one is spot on, if incomplete. Unless they already had two coats of paint on in which case who knows. But the process goes something like this: Prime > patch any big holes > sand > first coat of paint > patch (if the walls are white, you can either dye the patching compound, or put tape near them for visibility) > sand > spot prime the patches > second coat.
This is very normal, and results in faaaaar fewer touch ups at the end of the job because of how difficult these patches are to see after just a coat of flat primer. Doing it any other way always always always results in missing some patches, and having to try feathering out the repairs into the finish coat, which is likely to flash off and you'll wind up doing a third coat anyways. Doing it this way saves an entire round of patching, and you'll have a nicer finish. Simply best and fastest. Also you absolutely can prime standard spackling with paint, so there won't be any coverage issues.
that said the rest of what you described is pretty inexcusable 😅 I just don't want any prospective DIYers taking this as gospel, most information was correct

It made me realize why my office paint falls off if you look at it wrong lol (got that 2 in 1 stuff off the bargin shelf at Ace). Still not gonna fix it though, this office is on the end of a slowly collapsing barn 🤣

Change the channel name to LPT and flood it with a tonne of paint videos, unboxings etc.
@@MCXL1140 those 2-in-1 products are fine if the wall has already been painted and doesn't need to be fixed before being repainted....but if you're painting on new drywall or walls that have been repaired, always go with separate primer and paint. If you use a white primer, any holes in the wall will get highlighted by the primer and you can fix it before painting.

I now know what profession linus would've went with if the YT wasn't a thing. You can see his passion pouring out of him about the paint.
Linus was a professional painter by trade for years in college/after dropping out, back before LTT was a thing. He painted houses for a living, but eventually quit when he couldn’t handle the immense depression it gave him to feel like he had no direction in life. He talks about it often on WAN show.

I get the sense that whatever profession Linus happened to work in, he would have this level of knowledge, understanding, and passion for. As someone in a completely different industry, that is an immediately recognizable and highly desirable trait set.
As someone who does paint work and has helped build a house: YES. EXACTLY. EGGSHELL IS THE CORRECT CHOICE.
Linus is also correct about satin being easier. But that is zero excuse to not use the product your client wanted and is requiring. The rant about inefficiency gives me life as well. You ALWAYS patch first and then prime and paint!
The exact problems mentioned about exterior paint are why I have a brick house.
The previous owners of my dads house painted onto the bricks and it doesn’t look that great lmao
@@kaeden7570mortar, just cover the whole exterior wall on a thick layer of mortar and it will look flat or with any texture you want, before painting.
Linus really knows his paint! I worked as finishing contractor for years, and I don't think half our painters had this level of knowledge....
@@agawtdangedbear Because it's cheaper to pay people who don't have the knowledge required to do a good job. It's quicker to do it the easy way. Most people won't notice, or won't know enough to care if they do notice. It's why there's so many dodgy project home builders in every single developed country. If you pay idiots to do a good job they'll be there forever; if you pay idiots to slap it together and tell the client it's good enough there's a profit margin for you.
I'm not angry about it, just impressed with Linus's knowledge (and I understand why he is upset). That being said, there have always been contractors, trades, and builders with differing levels of knowledge and skill, this isn't anything new.

Yes, I am aware. He noted that he was a painter previously in the clip itself, and also it's pretty well known that he worked for College Pro Painters (not the most reputable contractor, you get whoever they send you)....

Linus reminds me of my old history teacher, whenever we didn't want to do any work in class we'd ask him about Ancient Greece. He'd go for a good 45 minutes on some random thing or another, you'd learn heaps, have fun doing it all while not having to do any work
I had some similar history teachers. The best one (meaning the one where we learned the least) was an older guy who at the start of class would ask people about current events in the news. If we could manage to continue the discussion long enough, we would go through an hour long class without talking about anything relating to the class.
We had a science teacher that would spend the whole hour talking about Disney Land if you brought it up. She and her family would go every year.
my hs chemistry teacher was the same, but about his life stuff. like he'd tell us about his kids, or the time his calf muscle turned around playing football, or sumn like that, it was great. he was a rather intimidating speaker, but, he was very dedicated, and I admired him.
My job just painted our walls. Our CEO is disappointed in the color and they also went through the tape process after painting, so it’s been a month total as they’ve puttied, waited for that to set, and finally came back to repaint then putty anything else they’ve missed. It’s such a disorganized process.
As someone who use to work a paint department for years and paints as a hobby it's so refreshing to find someone who understands my pain at seeing bad paint jobs

I've learned more about paint than I've ever known, and surprised at how much Linus knows. But then he's an ex-painter, who sounds like he was pretty good at it.
My own painting horror story: When we moved into our home, we got a painter to do the repaint. The painter was one that the handyman (who our real estate agent used on her houses) had worked with, and recommended. And, the paint job looked great.
Until the paint started peeling off the trim and doors. Turns out, he used the paint we had wanted, in the color we liked. A latex paint. And the existing paint? Oil based. Know what happens when you put latex over oil? It doesn't stick, and peels if you look at it wrong. Oh, and the best part? The painter becomes "unavailable," then ghosts me. So does the handyman. But, the walls still look good.
This storytelling and explanation ability just proves to me what a god tier content creator he is. before this video i could not care less about paint, by the end I'm literally thinking about how to repaint some walls in my house. it's so cool to witness S tier content creators "create" on the spot
FINALLY someone else that is emotionally devastated by inefficiency. when they do things so wrong, just so... beyond stupid. entirely out of the range of rational comprehension, you could only assume that it was deliberate, because at the end of the day, this level of sheer incompetence could not have been an accident, and that is what frustrates me the most, personally.

And you know what their answer would probably be like? "BuT wE'vE aLwAyS dOnE iT liKe ThIs..." That's the worst part in such situations. Thinking about it one minute would save them hours. I only worked as a painter for a year in university, and even I know this kind of basic stuff. If I did even one of those bone-headed things, my boss would've fired me on the spot.

This was probably miscommunication between sherwin williams and the new-hire who went in to pickup the wrong paint cause they were out (they have had massive supply issues in the last 8 months)

There are a lot of painting contractors who just hire unskilled labourers for painting jobs with minimal onsite training when in fact as Linus has explained really need a professional. Worth to do your research and ask questions.
As someone who works with contractors there is a 100% chance that the person in charge got lazy and decided Linus was a typical uninformed first time homeowner and thought they could get away with whatever made it's way onto the jobsite and pressured everyone below them to just go with it because they're the kind of shitty boss who meets any kind of "talkback" by flipping the fuck out.
I work in residential cabinetry and I can attest that the worst in people comes out when things don’t go flawlessly with their personal homes.
Linus is 100% justified in this. If a client was explicit to me over and over and the wrong product shows up, I am at fault.
I blame company management, some people love to leave out specific costumer instructions the the laborers because they couldn't be arsed to re-explain it. Then when shit hits the fan they're super quick to blame the laborers.
This stuff always makes me infuriated. If I pay you for a service, and I'm clear that I don't want compromise on that service, GIVE ME WHAT TF I ASKED FOR. Don't send me docs that say actually what I did was fine, nah. Y'all can actually get TF out of my house. Linus was 100% right to be fuming on this one...

A bit of a story… i work on garage doors; new construction, tear out, commercial, residential, rolling steel, screen doors, pedestrian doors, gates, you name it…
Well we had a commercial job a few years back. The distance from the ceiling to the opening was 16 ft. And they had a 14ft door, 6 of them actually. There’s this thing called vertical lift which essentially just moves the door straight up, it doesnt come back, really, at all, there’s also hi-lift which raises where the door is at when its back to allow more headroom and you can get that pretty much any height until it may as well be vertical, and then there standard lift which is what’s on nearly home and is the standard way; brings it right back right above the opening.
Well this guy was looking at the price of vertical lift vs hi-lift vs standard and vertical was like $800 more per door and Hi-Lift was like $400 compared to standard, and since these were something like $15,000 per door its not adding much. But that was way too much for them apparently so they went with standard….
You may be thinking “well that makes sense, hes saving like $5k”…. Well, the track and operators need to hang off the ceiling and they need to be roughly in line with the top of the opening with standard lift… so each piece of track (2 per door) and each operator needed 16ft of hangs x3 for the track (to dissuade horizontal movement either side and lateral backwards) and x2 for the operator and its all done in this thick ass angle iron which costs about $5 a foot, thats roughly 800 ft for the building so thats about $4k just for angle iron. And gtaking into account that rather than needing 2 guys to be out there for about 5 hours per door; you needed 4 guys out there spending 8 hours per door to hang it all… at about $100 an hour, rather than spending the original $6k in labor, he ended up spending about $20k… and there were some other things thats went wrong like the people that installed the installation said the operators were too close to the wall so they just unhooked and dropped them all (even though they were a minimum of 16ft from every wall) so we had to go back out but thats neither here nor there.
And on top of ALL of that; the doors run like absolute dog shit since theyre 20ft away from where theyre anchored so they move around a lot and there’s not really a good way to stop that that wouldn’t be ludicrously expensive…. Plus they dont have any vertical room inside which they need since this is a warehouse which houses heavy machinery (they’ve already taken out 4 of them in the past 3-4 years).
All of this was explained to the owner of the company yet he was hung up on the extra $800 for vertical lift so we ended up charging him an extra $4200 per door for a far inferior result.
There’s also been a few people who swear up and down that they know what theyre talking about and want a specific thing that just wont work and you pretty much have to say “this is what youre getting and you’ll like it” and sure enough they always have

If cost truly was the deciding factor for that customer, then I don’t know why you as a professional wouldn’t have explained that it would actually cost over 5x as much to get the standard doors and in the end as you say charging the customer over an extra $20k. Something isn’t right with your story man.
I feel like Linus and I just became friends. Linus? Why don't we hang out? Oh - because we live hundreds (thousands?) of miles apart. I manage a large painting company, am a tech nerd, and a workaholic, who likes to learn new things. Pretty sure our kids are about the same ages and we're about the same age and height (you're not old or short, btw - you look great man). I'm going to echo Linus' rant. Eggshell, velvet/satin, flat, are *not the same thing* - They're SO DIFFERENT! The chemical content is different. I will say that - even in the last year - paint has come a long way. There are scrubbable velvet finishes (that I like much better than eggshell for common spaces *don't use it for bathrooms*). The only thing that I hate about velvet is that you can't really touch it up. You roll that on and in a year, you're rolling walls corner to corner again for a coin-size touch up. This was SUCH A GOOD RANT! Some painters are SO BAD. Also I love how passionate you are about it - clipping audio mad. Such a good rant. SUUUCH a good rant. Can I say it again? Such a good rant. If you're going to do something, do it right.

3. What kind of paint should you use for bathroom walls??
bathroom walls (and most kitchen, laundry room, basement, or garage) should be shinier than eggshell & be rated for damp areas (usually a kind of ani-microbial)
This helps in protection (water or other splatter) and also higher humidity
bathroom walls should have "wonder board" style drywall & a water-resistant or even oil primer (that accepts water-based top coat)
Exactly like he said, semi-gloss shows imperfections so often its a sheen between that & eggshell for a bathroom compromise, especially half baths or kitchens with backsplash that might do well with less sheen

As a half decade long paint industry employee. I have a few comments related to this rant.
1. Paint + Primer combos are a complete marketing gimmick. They absolutely cannot replace the job of a dedicated primer. The only difference they have over standard paint is they take more pigment, thus decreasing the chance of bleed when going over bolder colors.
2. Sherwin Williams does not offer (to my knowledge) any product lines in both egg shell and satin in the same category. Some lines like ProMar and Cashmere offer egg shell, while lines like Super Paint, Duration, and Emerald offer satin. These sheen names are used interchangeably and carry the same gloss levels.
3. Higher gloss finishes DO NOT hide imperfections better than lower gloss. Glossy finishes are harder, thus more durable, however when damaged, very noticeable. Flatter finishes are softer, less durable, however hide damage much better. Think of trying to find a paperclip in a bundle of steel wool vs laying on a piece of sheet metal.
4. Although old ways suggest that finish directly correlates with durability, new technologies and formulas have developed products that offer high durability regardless of finish, allowing the customer to worry about one less aspect of their decision making process and focus purely on their cosmetic preferences.

I also want to add this,
When having your whole home repainted, it is advisable to visit the paint store the material will be coming from. Speak with the experts there about what you expect out of your project. They will be happy to help you develop a spec for your project. A visit like that could have been the factor that would have avoided all the fuss you went through.

This by far is my favourite LMG video. I've learnt so much. The storytelling, passion, and education was brilliant.
As someone who works at home depot in the paint department I found this video very nice and so many of the things that you said about the different products and the steps of dueing things is what I always tell people when doing things. However there have been so many times that I have been working and I got like I did this and im like why, you will have to do this again to make sure it is right. Then when it comes to the paint and primer in one, I have never been told that I need to sell the "paint and primer 1 coat" more I just recommend and sell what I think will work best and 90% of the time when it comes to people that want to do it right I always recommend a dedicated primer and then a paint to go along with it because, even though I haven't painted before its what I have heard is the best from so many people after working there for many years. Then when you talked about putting stain over paint I was like noooo whyyyy because and how you explained it is exactly what I tell people but nobody ever listens to me because I am just a person that mixes paint at home depot. Thanks for this clip even though I am a year late!

Linus' description gave me the impression that the painters don't really know what to do.
I am a bit annoyed at Kent and Home Depot who keep pushing latex paint (water + acrylic) instead of oil-based paint for exterior walls. Here in Nova Scotia I gave up on latex, it doesn't last in wet and freezing weather. I now paint my decks with oil-based anti-rust metal paint. I would use ship's hull paint if they sold it. :-)
True for all painters bar building restoration painters.

No other group of contractors has the MAJORITY of them as Meth heads. Simple Fact.

This is the equivalent of being a mechanic, knowing you blew your engine, and telling the shop "I blew my engine -- please just put a new donor in and let me make sure it has the right amount of mileage." And then the shop agrees to your face, then the mechanic is skeptical, and then they rebuild your engine instead of putting in a donor.
And then the rebuilt engine fails and ends up costing everyone more time and money than just using the thing that the customer WHO IS EDUCATED ON THE SUBJECT ** asked for. :)
Yup, and that's why i do almost everything myself. I can't stand people who can't follow instruction, even when they are paid to do it. And they get mad after when you explain them why they just had to follow the damn instructions as asked in the begining

Just saying that some of your experiences may not be all their fault, not saying it's your fault (I know literally nothing about any of it) but communicating properly is a pretty big deal if you want it done right
TLDR
Make sure you are clear with what you want and if they do it wrong then you can't be blamed
Even if they're not educated on the subject, you should either:
1. drop the job
2. educate them
3. just go with what they want even if it's not optimal

I work in hotel reservations. I cannot _imagine_ someone calling in because they wanted a single king bed and got two queens and saying, "Yeah, but two queens is fine. It's the same size room as a single king. I'm not going to fix it."
Yeah, there's a lot more work in fixing a paint job than switching a reservation, but _my goodness_ you screwed up _royally_ so now you get to invest a royal amount of time and money into fixing your screw up.
Have lived this, booked a single king, was offered a single double, refused until they'd given me what I booked. It had a damaged lock, which I pointed out to them, and they kept my damage deposit because the lock was broken, the lock which I had pointed out to them. I disputed, they contested, I still lost.
Loved rolling up late at night on a long road trip and having our "2 queen" reservation turn into a "twin and a pull-out"
@@hovant6666 That's crazy. The hotel I work at, if someone disputes, they almost always get their way. Even if they're clearly in the wrong. And we also get stuff fixed ASAP or, if not, put it in the notes and add resort credit.
TBF, we are one of the top two hotel/resorts in the city (I think we're the best, but that's me).
Although the dispute thing kind of sucks for me at times because I make commission on upsells. A guy asked for a $600 upgrade for two nights. We had the room, and the front desk agent completely took off one of the nights from the reservation because he was cute or something (yeah, she doesn't work there anymore). Then he disputed the $600 upgrade and, in spite of him being recorded asking for it and agreeing to the price, they took it off. All told, I lost out on $120 from the front desk agent and the dispute.
@@Matkatamiba For us, that mostly happens when people book third party. Expedia (for example) tells people that they're booking a specific room type, but they really book at "whatever is available" (the term changes based on the hotel). When I worked at the front desk, there was a woman who booked with Expedia for 2 queens because it was her, her husband, and two kids. Expedia told us... none of this. And she ended up with a single king and a rollaway bed for the kids.
I should clarify the original post is if _we_ book it. If it's booked through a third party, there is absolutely nothing we can do if it's a sold out night and they showed up late enough that we already assigned all the people that specifically booked for two queens.
And it gets even worse when it's a bad card that doesn't go through, so the reservation gets cancelled _months_ in advance and they _still send them e-mails reminding them to come in._ That happened once. Again, when I was working at the front desk.
Basically, always book directly unless you're doing it through some sort of special deal (like a travel credit card).

I fully understand Linus, I'm tired of the construction industry, I worked in it for years, when you're told to do something one way, nobody cares about opinion, this is what you're getting paid to do, this is how you're going to do it... period
I wouldn't take the job if they tell me exactly how to do it. I understand what Linus is saying about choosing the sheen of product, that is absolutely his decision. But when I have owners tell me exactly how to do something 99% of the time it turns out much worse than if I would have done it my way. But maybe thats just the 16 years of experience talking.
Most construction companies these days are ran and supervised by people who are under educated and just generally piss poor at their job. Its largely due to companies not being interested in training people in middle and upper management they just love to take people who are good on the tools and with zero training or over sight expect them to be great at leading a crew and making the company money

He always begs me to come work with him, because I'm one of the few people who actually cares about attention to detail (based on what he said), but God damn do I find painting houses painfully mind numbing.

Have you considered maybe helping your father find people that meet his standard given he considers you his current "gold standard" for a worker? If anyone would be able to tell if another can work with a similar, same, or better level of detail and care (about doing their job correctly) as you may seem to (apologies, I don't know you personally, no offense meant) while you were working with him, it would be you.
I assume this because I'm also a person that takes serious pride in any work I do (whatever it is) and I do my best to cover every detail and do so correctly (I often tell people that half-ass things "If you're going to do it at all, then you might as well do it correctly the first time" becuase I personally hate incompetence, shortcuts, lazy work, etc as well) so I tend to notice those that lazily work with 0 care vs those that actually care and take the time to do things correctly the first time around.
If you do this, you may win in two ways... 1) You dad stops asking you so much to come back, and 2) you help your father keep business going well.... while also getting him to stop pestering you to come work for him 😂😂
This rant was a banger, and very justified. I worked in a print shop for many years and any time I order something printed I get so frustrated with the small details no one pays attention to.

@@procarpenter1788 Listen again, closer (and yes; he's bouncing around among different subjects) - he was comparing eggshell to flat when discussing "wash-ability", and why it's a good balance between flat and satin or gloss... but then went on to comparing eggshell to satin in terms of what he *wanted*, specifically contracted for, and repeatedly verbalized - and the contractors were trying to tell him that eggshell and satin were "the same thing".
@@MrJest2 I think he was confusing matte for satin TBH. His comparison about washability and then his later comments about the painters using it to hide imperfections in both the paint job and the drywall only make sense for a matte (something more dull (flat) then eggshell.

Also, while he did get satin and matte mixed up; either the painters used satin when he asked for eggshell, or the painters used matte when he asked for eggshell. They didn't do as he asked and paid for.

It's like some adjunct to Knoll’s Law of Media Accuracy - he was able to spot all the screw-ups in the painting because he knows enough about it to see the flaws, but he trusts that the other contractors have done their jobs right, when they could well be at least as bad, but he hasn't worked in those fields to know how to spot the problems.
He wasn't just a painter, he owned a painting business.

The actual spec document:
- Must be paint.
Something as simple as the store waiting for product that will arrive the next day can lead to things like this happening. The contractor doesn't give AF, they'll take whatever product is available, and not mention it to the customer.
At Sherwin, it doesn't help the customer that the Contractor Paint and the Customer Paint, are labeled, priced, marketed, and formulated differently while also conflated and compared to each other constantly.
How? They've done it before, saved a few bucks and the owner didn't notice, didn't care, or didn't know to care, and there were no repercussions.
A lot of installation "experts" do hack jobs just to get the job done quick. I've had that problem with professional air conditioner installation guys who didn't even follow anything in the manufacturer's installation guide. Ended up with great bloody holes in the wall that pests can waltz on through and one unit didn't even work properly until it was re-positioned under warranty (the temperature sensor was completely blocked against the wall). Then you confront them about the shitty job and get the typical "that's how it's always done". You pay good money and try to go with the most reputable company in hope of getting a solid result, only to get burned when they cut every possible corner to save labor costs. Assholes.

Usually the best way to catch as many of the small defects in a walls before painting including high and low patches from previous painters as well as holes or drywall mud bubbles is to go over the walls with a light on a 45 to 75 deg angle and looking down the wall you will be able to see imperfections easier and patch them before doing your first coat.

Though most actually did a poor job in addition to making mistakes like this. Getting PTSD reaction from listening to this and it is why I do most everything myself now, but sadly can't (and won't) for my small condo/townhouse HOA.
Very smart and good that you had it in the document so you have legal backing in getting them to redo. This is the #1 thing I would tell everyone is to ensure that every single thing is extremely clearly specified in the contract. Protects you both.
Agreed that satin and flat makes it so much easier to not notice texture variations (if you have orange peel or other texture) and roller lines than eggshell or gloss. It is why you use it on the ceiling.
Also fully agree that patching before paint is easier and you can see the imperfections by shining a light down the wall. Doesn't make it meaningfully easier to see after painting.
I feel so lucky I got referred to a great contractor. But even he subcontracted to guys that didn't do a spectacular job and he personally fixed it & didn't charge me a penny of labor for mistakes. I can't imagine just hiring some random general contractor, I'd go crazy.
@@Mongoose3769 Lucky indeed. Sadly the subcontracting is often the problem and often the problem they create can't be fully fixed, only mitigated. The contractor making it right without giving you grief is really the sign you found a good one.

Why is it when someone is adamant and specific about a certain selection, someone else will let their imbecilic desires shine through.
I mean, literally, he could sue their company, possibly to bankrupcy if he wanted to. Sue for not doing the job he asked them to so he can get the money for the job back, and add to that the legal fees.
They'd wouldn't be able to afford all that.
Like, seriously, if someone asks for something specific, just do it! People have no respect for themselves or their profession and just want to do everything lazily.
