- A lipless crankbait, Rattle Trap, or rattle plug is a great lure to catch fish in cold water. We got through each bait and talk about what's in my tackle box right now.

2:44 Bog just chilling out, enjoying the sun, hanging out with his owner.... That is perfect!
I'm a 67 year old West Virginia redneck and I've never not liked any of your content keep it up
Upshur county here, and I agree with you. Factual, prudent information without a bunch of hype.
Hey brother, Iâm a Baltimore redneck and I come from a biracial family and there ainât nothing like being on the goddamn water catching some hogs. I fish up here pretty boy in liberty. Iâm only about an hour from Virginia what are some good areas down that way near DC that I can go bass fish only place I get down that way is rocky gorge and thatâs in Howard County Iâll drive to DC sold ainât nothing to drive to Virginia drive to Florida just a fish
I love that Bog is always licking the fishđ he get as happy as you do when a fish is onđŁ! Oh yeah I freaking love a lipless in almost any situation! Thanks Balzz
Excellent video...sharing your attention to details is what separates you from the rest of the pack.đ
The lipless is my favorite hard bait. I love it so much, I made a video and gave away a solid mod!! This is definitely a year 'round lure. No matter the weather, temperature, time of day... it just catches. I could throw one into a cup of water and pull out a bass!!
Thank you for the great information and video++
LOVED the Red jig right after ice off this year. They fell for it everytime. Gonna drag the jig with a Kelp Buster EZ this year, looking for that bigger bite.
I have been on a HUGE lipless kick lately. I've found, that in my area at least, that red eye shad style has been more effective than the Bill Lewis style. But I've been finesse fishing it. I let it sit on the bottom and sorta flip it side-to-side or I'll rip it and let it flutter back down. Been working great for me.
Have you tried the 2 tap red eyes? They produce much better for me in my area. That change in sound triggers more fish for me.
Been using traps since the 90s. Iâve had luck with quite a few. Thanks for pointing out a few Iâm not aware of!
Awesome video looking forward to watching more. keep up the good work.
Yes dude!!! Iâve been buying traps like mad this year, specifically red traps. Iâve got a problem, lol. Itâs my favorite way to fish. Iâve been fishing them kinda like you would a blade this year with a few shakes then lift the rod for a few vibrations and back to the bottom she goes. They always smash on the fall. So much fun man!!
I like using a 7â2â MH rod but with a moderate or mid-fast action. Iâve broke off way too many lipless on 12 lb test. I use 15 and 17 lb Flouro. Just have to let it sink a couple extra seconds. It amazes me how Bass hit a lipless year after year. A very consistent lure,
Good info! Keep the videos coming.
Yes..... I need to hear more about fishing Florida!! Thanks
Great vid! Thanks MB!!
Nice info on the eyes filming over bc I was starting to think about never throwing red again on my local lake. Red was hot for a couple weeks early then they went to swiping at it, but eating a natural shad color even in dirty dirty water and low light.
Bill Lewis Rat-L-Traps are the best. They're still made in the USA, are affordable, and still work the best. Lipless cranks have been one of my favorite lures my whole life and I've always gone back to the original Rat-L-Trap configuration for good reason.
Iâve caught so many fish early fall on black n chrome bill Lewis traps
Brother as always great video with awesome information. Thanks you for the videos and the time you put in to them to help us become better fisherman. Hope that one day I can meet you in person.
Thanks for sharing!
Mikey thanks for the new info..
For my pond in South Florida, the Yo Zuri in baby bass color is a killer!
I learned to fish using a trap on lake guntersville. Still one of my favorites!
Trap fishing is one of my things too. Iâve got some hand made lures that you need to try to believe. Super unique.
Love lipless in the late winter / early spring. Crappie or perch pattern yo- yoâd catches fish consistently!
On my lake the old Red Rapala single knockers are absolutely lights out pre-spawn. It catches numbers as well as big-uns.
Love the aruka shad.been using it for 12 plus years
Like your Steal your face shirt! I've been killing it on the Googan Klutch Mini in the Cash Craw color down here in central FL. It's even been catching me alot of tilapia which is crazy since I only ever foul hooked them until I started using it.
Good stuff. I like the 6th sense quake too.
Great content as always bro. I need to up my Trap game.
Great video Mikey. Thanks for your time and tips. Get back to Florida soon! Fishing is great! Especially in Lake Placid! Tight lines..
Be down shortly thanks for watching man!
Great on Mikey . Deep look into lipless . Thanks
Thanks for checking it out Mike!
MikeyBalzz, loved the video. Matter a fact just bought 3 new red cranks this weekend. a Strikeking lipless, a Bagley's flatsided squarebill and a traditional slender cabelas crankbait...will be on Lake Keowee in SC for my local tourney...just what the doctor ordered on your presentation of how to retrieve these babies.....peace and love to Bog......
Have some fun man that bite is just kicking up
I have a trap tied on all year long long up hear in NY the Aruka shad is my favorite, seems to work pretty well on Smallies
I love the thunder hawk lipless lineups
Great video! Trap fishing is by far one of my favorite ways to catch 'em.
At my lake I -crushed- 'em on the bigger 3/4oz Red Eye Shad in late summer. It figure it matched the primary bluegill size and it out-caught the 1/2 size 5:1 for me.
that sounds like a blast!!
I have caught more Bass on a Spro Arukashad than any other lipless in the same color you showed in December here in Delaware. Love em on 10-12lb flouro.
Mikey that hoodie
thanks bro i love that thing!
Traps style bait are a go to early in the year in my area. Definitely red with orange. Donât sleep on the shad colors.
Iâve never fished with her trap before this video. Open up my eyes to a whole new area of fishing.
If you've never fished with a rattle trap before you've been missing out on a lot
FYI redfish speckled trout and even flounder like rattle traps good for salt water
Hey Mike excellent trap video thanks for the equipment mini seminar I really needed this video and I'm buying the halo XD 3 pro series rods I like the way there built. GOD bless you and your family and my buddy bog's hey Mike good job putting a life vest on bog's. Ps love watching your channel and your a great teacher Mike tight lines always.
Super detailed speaking from experience video. thank you Mike....best to bogs
Thanks for checking it out Lenny!
Thanks Mike. Yo-Zuri has a much more suttle lippless I do better with. It only has 3 bbs in a small head compartment. It seems to get bigger bites.
Guntersville the bass hit lipless red Jan, Feb, March, April. I seem to get twice the bites on flat paint red instead of gloss.
Good stuff Balzz đ
Hellz yeah appreciate you bud!
Off topic : Mikey a couple years ago you did a really nice video on spoon fishing .. it has always been my least fav way to fish .. horrible results .. but you were slaying them in your video .. I watched that video over and over - I wrote down notes you were teaching .. since then itâs now one of my fav techniques on lake mead .. I learned so much from you & that video .. THANK YOU đ
P.s .. Iâve now two tackle trays with nothing but spoons đ.. Iâve got it down to a science now .. again all thanks to you đ
@@deangruwell6555 bro that's awesome way to grind it and learn it! that bite is so much fun when it's on, especially now with forward facing sonar. it's crazy how they eat it best like right now when it's cold and then in the dead of summer.
EVERYONE was waiting for you to talk about the LV 500đ€đ€Łmaybe you will give your take on another videođ Another episode for the winđđŻ
My go to brands are Bill Lewis and 6th Sense love their traps. I use a 7'2 MH Glass Expride. I can confidently say the fish I've lost on that rod I can count on one hand. 12lb flouro always
I love the two retrieves you talked about. I also really like to yo yo the bait and burn the bait in cold water on shallow grassy flats. I live in Colorado, and the water is hard right now. When the ice starts to open up its trap time and the yo yo is the best. But when them flats warm up enough to have them fish move up on them in the grass. I catch them burning the bait in 42° to 45° water consistently. Love the content, keep em rolling in Mikey.
they are so fun to fish and so super versatile too! caught a few on it in 2 ft today and 10ft - same bait just fishing it different.
Dig it, thanks Mike...
I need to get some practice with lipless cranks to get comfortable throwing them.
Luv the dives upward commene
i fish guntersville all the time and i have seen 2 times that u can fish a rattle trap, before the spawn and after the spawn, the love it ripped out of the grass
Great video! Donât sleep on that spro on the river!
Looks like your lipless box is like mine, it has a little of everything lol always a different condition for a different lipless. I still love the og lipless lures though.
Great video! I didnât see any Cotton Cordellâs or Rat L Traps in your lineup. Whyđ€đŁ
I fish Florida once a year in February @Headwaters and I throw a BillLews Tennessee Shad color⊠Have worn them out on that bait. Iâd have a hard time being convinced something can catch them better on that lake/same time of year.
That bag of producto worms on the wall rack behind you takes me back to 1980s. That was the secret worm in Florida especially Kissimmee chain black grape
Dude they still kill it and I probably shouldn't say it but they work super good on Guntersville
I knew i liked your style i like yo hoodie nfa
Would you use the sergeant on spots in ditches ? Like Lanier ?
Thank you
appreciate you watching bud!
I love the 6th Sense Quake baits. They have caught me a lot of great fush.
There suspending ones are great for shallow rip and pause .
That SPRO has been good this year. have you tried the ima? Itâs a suspending (slightly) trap. dude. Itâs a crazy Japanese version of a trap. subtle knock and FIRE colors.
I have yet to get a bit on a trap i have some strike kings and i have a few Rapalas
Great tips Mike us trap guys know when someone is speaking facts, and everyone trust me when i say this he most definitely is speaking facts. Xcalibur life is super expensive now a days lol thank God I have a lot of them
Hey man, Iâm in North East Florida near Gainesville and was wondering if I could use a lipless crank bait year around with success? Iâm more of a huge worm Texas rig guy and have been wanting to get into some moving baits like a lipless to add to my arsenal. Only problem is I fish a lot of lakes with Lily pads and grass. My dad swears by an original Rat-L-Trap with some gold to catch some giants.
I have a lot as well đź itâs an addiction
Where can I get one of the stealy monster bass sweatshirts?
Great vid as always Mikey! Itâs insane how far youâve come since the early Gambler days lol. Keep it up I love the educational aspect.
Thanks bud!!! How you been!
@@mikeybalzz really good! Got a baby boy now and canât wait for next tournament season to start up!
@@roydialfishing hell yeah you got a fishing minion! train him well in the arts of the bending rod!
@@mikeybalzz haha will do!
SPRO has the Essential Aruku Shad Silent Lipless Crankbait. I used to kill them on the silent Red Eye Shad but unfortunately they discontinued it. The Damiki Tremor 65 Silent is similar to the Silent Red Eye Shad but is kind of light.
yeah that silent red eye was badass had some issues though with a few of them where they ran super funny. still got a few hiding the box.
I caught my PB largemouth on a lipless and I've caught many other hogs on them. Love it BUT I worry fishing them because the bigger fish inhale it so easily and good that I've tongue hooked many of them which can kill them from blood loss. I've seen some bleed so freaking much that I couldn't believe they were able to swim away but I left worried that they probably died shortly after. đ
Cordell Spot and Lucky Craft LVR500 make the list.
Loved the content, Brother!! One thing that I want to know is do you change out the treble hooks? If so, what's your "go-to" brand? Much love to you and I appreciate all that you do!
Can never go wrong with triple Grips the cool part is a lot of the traps I showed in this video already come with pretty stout hooks, Some of them being triple grips
dude, Mikey, ever try the TD Vibrations ? They make a silent on too, harder to find but Team Daiwa makes some sick baits !
I use the old school Sebile silent "rattlebait" when it gets tough. It's an oldy, but goody!
Very sneaky I like it
@@mikeybalzz when you get old, you accumulate some good baitsđ. Dig your channel!
Juice!!!
Does all this pertain to smallmouth bass to?
Totally agree with you MB, in that the original Excalibur lures are just different than the remade Booyah. It is either something in the material they are made with, or the rattles that are used, whatever it is I just get more bites using the original Xcals than I do the Booyahs. And I have a 3700 box dedicated to my Xcal collection, which is all XR 50s in the rattle and one knocker, as well as the XR25s in both rattle styles. Good video topic!
it's crazy how classic discontinued lures can be like that, sort of drives me nuts because i really like the new booyahs.
@@mikeybalzz it's one of those things where materials matter and when new company comes in and tries to reduce production costs (see Yamamoto) the end result is an inferior product to the original. That's not to say the new product doesn't have some positive qualities, BUT of the original was unique or different than the other baits in their space, maybe staying true to the original has value ??? I think it's cool that you take bog with you on the boat. I have a setter who likes to fish with me as well. Worry sometimes about hooks, but my pup loves to be on the water with me, so I take her.
@@nawinchester no better fishing companion! never complains and always has an open schedule!
The xr 25 is the best lure ever made!! year round BooYa is not the same plus they do not make citrus shad color ! I fish them year round in the southeast and it beats everything !
If I remember correctly, that booyA one knocker Is the Tennessee shad. Or blush shad.
Yeah I think it's the blush it's a killer color man
Thoughts on fishing a double hook on the front as opposed to the treble hook to reduce snags?
works, that's some sneak stuff right there.
Brother, Iâm a huge Grateful Dead fan, as well as a bass fisherman⊠where can I get that hoodie?? Iâve never seen it on the website?? Thanks brother⊠tight lines and NFA
Why do bass like hard baits vs soft baits in the winter??
I like the video I love lipless crank baits. I noticed the reel you use on that set up is an slx is it magnetic or the one that's not mag. I ask because I've been looking at buying one I love shimano.
so i have a bunch of the standard slx, just got one with the digital brake for crankbait fishing and LOVE it! stay tuned got a vid where i put it to the test a bit in a week or so.
@@mikeybalzz I'm gonna subscribe and I'll be watching for the video thanks for getting back with me I pray you have a blessed night.
Hey Mikey, them old one knockers are beating the new ones due to experience đ€Ł
đ€Ł
How about showing these types of baits from shore. I'll be in Florida from 15 Jan until the middle of may. Would love to see your shore line tech Thanks
The 2 baits I'd bank fish in FL 90% of the time would be a floating frog and a Texas Rigged worm (usually a stickbait)
Hay man milt here who makes that trap the red silent one can you get it at tackle warehouse milt
No LV-500? My go to.
lv 500 is my go too they eat it here like they've never seen it!
I'm in Nor Cal and I've had pretty good luck burning the lv over the top of old vegetation in the winter , they hammer it!
@@adamj7067 they eat it at guntersville the same way.
Hey Bog!
Have u caught any of the chick magnets or the Rapala Tiny this winter? Or in general?! I just got a a handful of each was just wondering if you've gotten bit on them yet?
i don't like the chick magnet. i thought it was going to be juice specs wise but fishing it the wobble is too hard and there's something just off about it atleast fishing colder water/prespawn fish. just my opinion. the rapala is pretty sweet, alot like a big frittside, don't know what the general is.
@@mikeybalzz no brother I just meant in general like regardless if it was winter time or not in general have you used either one of these baits..lol.. but that's crazy about your answer though cuz I feel the same way about the chick magnet.. the Rapala Tiny is pretty legit tho.. they came out with some really good color schemes for that bait!! đŁđȘâïž
I lost confidence in trying a lipless crank bait because I fish Hartwell. Seems like all the videos I've watched have made it sound like they only work in grass. Don't have any grass around here or very little
For me, Jackall TN is the king if money is not a problem. RED EYE SHAD IS THE BEST FOR VALUE, BUT, THE HOOKS SUCK
i've heard a lot of guys talk about that jackall. gonna put them in the rotation again and see.
Ok I got it milt
Iâll buy those xcalibur xr50s off of you.
Can these baits be effective year round?
They do where I'm at in the south. I've caught them on it down to 42 degrees
đ donka donka donka
Splatter back Color pattern
đđđđđ
Ok Mikey who makes that Sargent milt
Thunderhawk - you can find them right here bit.ly/3yExFpE
The reason that the color red is so prevalent in January February and March is because that's when the crawfish start coming out got nothing to do with bass lids it's when crawfish start coming out thank you
That's def part of it. You're welcome.
Even up to June in some northern States.
No, but thats cool you think that!
Craws digest some mud while feeding on zooplankton .Down south with Alot of red mud causes the crawfish to take on a reddish pigment.Never saw red craws here in PA
@@mikeantes9597 def red craws up north
LV500 bro.................
IT'S A TRAP! Sorry it's a line in Star Wars has nothing to do with fishing, great video Mike keep it up always little things in your videos that haven't though of to try.
