  • Lipless crankbaits, like Rat-L-traps, are some of the best all times lures that any bass fisherman can own. However, I do feel like in recent years they have been put on the back burner in fishing.

    There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to fishing a lipless crankbait. One thing that a lot of people tend to do is assume that all Lipless cranks are created equal. Not only do the have different sounds and shapes, but they also dive differently and fall differently.
    I think that a lot of people also assume that lipless cranks are only for fishing in grass situations and that is just not true. Fishing on rock flats for smallmouth bass is one of my favorite ways to catch bass!
    BassFishingHQ is dedicated to teaching people how to catch more and bigger bass. I will go over different bass fishing tips & techniques that will put more fish in the boat or on the shore. Whether you are just starting out or a seasoned tournament angler, my goal is to help you catch more bass.

    This was the year of lipless cranks for me. I can't believe all the ways I caught fish on them; burned in shallow water, rip and pause like a jerkbait, slow rolled on bottom, bounced off rocks, etc. Just tonight I caught two keeper walleyes on back to back casts with the lipless. Good video keep it up.

    Great video! One tweak I like to make to my lipless cranks is I take some wire cutters and cut off the front most hook on the front treble. So it’s got 5 hooks instead of 6. I find that it makes it wayyy less likely to snag and doesn’t seem to affect my hookup ratio. Since when it’s moving that front hook hugs up to the body, I just eliminate the hook that’s hanging down pointing forward.

      I have been doing the same soon after they came to the market back in the day. Its my go-to crank lure and 90% are dressed with 5 hook; 2 front and 3 back. Won tourney big fish at Okeechobee lake a 1/2 OZ Fire Tiger Rattle Trap on that very cold day (40°)...

    The EWG Mustad triple grips are an absolute must change I make on most every lipless and jerkbait bait I have. I have noticed a significant difference in getting those fish into the boat and not losing them. The moderate to slow bend rod action is also a must as it reduces the chances of you from pulling the bait out of the fish's mouth. I built my own lamiglass composite rod specifically for this type of fishing and the first time I took it out was in a local SC tournament in February. Had 24 lbs of fish with a 8.24 lmb (second big fish of tournament) using that rod. Great video, it does confirm a lot of what I already do, so great job.

I'm starting the MLF BFL's this season as a co and learning from your videos, I have had come to realize I didn't know half what I thought I did about fishing. Before I watch this I'll comment one of my favorite ways to work a lipless is like a jig. Let it hit the bottom and soft lift ups. An awesome retrieve. I have a special way of using it. Floro over mono. A medium heavy 7 6 with fast action and high speed reel. I keep my rod high for sensitivity and some 5 and 6 lb bass have hit like blue gills. I kill it that way and barely lose any fish. You'd have to check my video to see my unique way. Plus lv500 over Rattle trap 7 out of 10 times.

    Another great straight to the point video.
    I have some good days mostly late fall & winter vertically jigging or yo-yo. I have found the rattle rap has a better action or fall for this style. Do you have any thoughts on when to throw blade bait vs. 'rattle trap' on deep water bass with rocks?
    What is your cut-off water temp for winter fishing?
    Keep em coming!

    • @BassFishingHQ
      @BassFishingHQ  Před 2 lety

      Thats a great point. I used to yo yo a lipless crankbait a lot to catch fish in cold water, I tend to start using the blade bait more when the water temp is below 50. However I do think that these are interchangeable at times. As far as cut off. As long as you have some clarity to your water, I have seen where bass can be caught on a blade bait in water temps in the upper 30s.

  • @billyhill2488
    @billyhill2488 Před 2 lety

    I need to get my confidence back with the lipless. I usually have them in the boat but always choose something else to throw. Hard to beat a black and chrome lipless for busting whites though. Something I do with trebles is set my drag looser than needed for the line. Smaller the treble looser the drag. My number of lost fish went way down when I started giving them more freedom to pull drag if they needed to run especially close to the boat. When I see people crying about losing fish on trebles I look them square in the face and say "loosen your drag because it's a little different from that big single jig hook". And I also mention the more parabolic rod to them and the importance of line stretch. Yo Zuri Top Knot in 12# is my line of choice for most chunking and reeling and even for jerks due to its smaller than standard diameter plus it does have stretch.

    Easy way to figure which noise. If you have big schools of smaller bait you use the ones with more smaller bbs. If blue gills or bigger bait fish you use the bigger bbs with the knockers. The bbs imitate the sound of a school moving. Smaller fish will create higher pitch. Also use silent or blade baits in winter. Because schools are smaller and make less noise.

      That video was totally out of line. I don't know what exactly he was reacting to. Certainly nothing that I have seen. I watch pretty much all the major fishing content youtubers and there is a ton of similar content across the board. I think it is just the nature of the subject matter combined with the number of folks attempting to create content. I couldn't tell you how many friggin Inu-Rig vids have I watched in the last two weeks. Don't let it get you down, Tyler.
