      I'm not talking about Tom asking the guest to clarify some lingo, or to rephrase something. I'm talking about the other 95% of interruptions.
      Like when he'll cut the guest off to inject a personal story and then ask for insight about his own experience specifically.
      Or the guest will mention a factoid in passing, and Tom will halt the conversation to go off an a random exploration of that factoid that the guest really only mentioned to help support a point that Tom never let them get to.
      " *Tom’s interruptions have always been valid and beneficial* "
      No. They're often tangential. Almost always unnecessary, and certainly don't need to happen that very second. He could do what all *good* podcasters do and wait until the guest finishes what they're saying, or at least finishes their f*cking sentence, and then ask follow up questions.
      Instead, Tom rudely cuts the guest off mid sentence to ask questions that often take the conversation down tangential rabbit holes, rarely circling back to the topic that was interrupted.
      This isn't complicated. When you ask your quest a question, let them f*cking answer it.

    - Avoid ultra-processed foods
    - Avoid being obese/overweight

    - Avoid high levels of simple carbohydrates
    - complex carbohydrates in the form of vegetables are ok
    - A diet that's high in plant good quality plant-based calories typically is going to be pretty healthy

      I mean sure, that's the very short list of recommendations in this interview, but there's a ton more useful and interesting info about the state of aging research and various protocols and drugs. To simply chop this video into a bullet point list of diet tips kind of misses the point.

    Tom just loves his own voice! In most interviews he's talking like 70% of the time, and constantly interrupting the guests! I don't know why the guests even bother trying to speak full sentences!

    Holy shit Tom's tangential interruptions are dialed up to 13 in this one. Matt will literally say "I have a couple things to say about that," and half way through thing #1, Tom interrupts him with a question that derails the whole point Matt's trying to make.

    Tom - I'd be curious if you get a chance to clarify on the caloric restriction.
    Matt said that rodents were restricted 60% vs what they would freely eat.
    Tom - I'm assuming your 25% reduction was a 25% calorie deficit which could in fact be a similar number.
    I can't imagine the rodents were losing weight all the time so it'd be curious to know what level of calorie deficit (if any) they were in.

      I was also confused by the logical connections here.
      Especially given the fact that
      1) rodents and humans eat more when they have nothing else to do,
      2) rodents and humans eat more tasty and unhealthy food, so it's not clear which calories we are talking about,
      3) the number of calories can be completely unrelated to increased hunger/autophagy/weight loss, etc.

      I think it’s possibly because they have zero sun on their face and that is why they look like white sheets, but if they’re taking vitamin D to supplement that, does it counteract it??? Also, are we just not used to seeing somebody thin, which kind of accounts for the sunken eyes and somebody super pale?????? Just a thought but I came here to find this comment because he looks like death warmed over even though this might be a healthier look and we’re just not used to it because we grew up outdoors, farming, etc.

      He's not trying to "advise" people on anything. He's just a scientist reporting on the research. If you bothered to watch the interview, or any other with Matt, you'll notice that he is always hesitant and sometimes entirely opposed to making recommendations or giving advice. Usually he's 3 gallons of caveats and disclaimers in a 2 gallon bucket.

    seen this guy before on peter attia's podcast. he's so much more realistic (and accurate) than someone like david sinclair. i always get the bs vipe from sinclair, especially when he talks about caloric restriction and dietary stuff. in general he does that annoying hubris thing smart scientists fall into, advising on something that doesn't have he data to confirm it's a good idea for everyone.

      it is always easier to remain conservative and say that nothing will work and there is little that can be changed.
      that not everything is so clear and hence that it is impossible to draw conclusions.
      such people inevitably seem smarter.
      but such way you won’t advance science much, and you won’t really motivate people
      for example, advice to eat less - obviously no one is in a cage with a lab assistant who feeds him, so most mentally healthy people will never reach the level of hurting themselves badly by cutting calories.
      not to mention that calories by themselves say little about nutrients and elements in food

    Just a thought, vegan/vegetarian or keto/carnivore has a lower protein consumption than a typical "balanced" diet because you're combining not only the protein of animal foods but also that of plant foods. Grains or rice and legumes (which contain growth signalling amino acids on their own) can be combined to make a complete protein but if the person eating these plants also ate a lot of meat, their protein consumption is probably going to be much higher than someone who eats either just plants or just meat (or mostly) and this may be too much protein than what the body evolved for, our ancestors experienced a lot of scarcity, never full balanced diet with every nutrient available, so I wonder if that has something to do with people experiencing health benefits on either diet, because it restricts that protein or perhaps an overabundance of nutrients that maybe produce an opposite effect like too many MTOR growth signals?
    So perhaps vegetarian and keto allow people to eat as much as they like and reach satiety more easily without overdoing their protein?

      @@simoneambroise6392 we don't know how long our ancestors lived (or could of lived) on ancestral diets. we have a few skeletons. we have skeletons showing very old humans too. we don't have much (or none) evidence showing if they died because of nutrition. we have a bit that they died of trauma. and we know many would have died way before old age merely because the conditions were so harsh (starvation, infections, blunt force trauma etc)

      vegans can't get the right amino acid profile to be healthy unless they are very very serious with supplementation and know what they are doing. easy to get the right profile if you eat meat regularly because it's naturally occurs.

      ​@simone ambroise Okay so quantity and quality of each kind of macronutrient and micronutrient? Yes but there are still certain examples of singular factors like trans fat, tobacco, alcohol, carcinogens... etc that can shorten lifespan. Protein activates MTOR which speeds up cell growth and likely the aging process and my point is that the protein content in plant foods eaten alongside protein content in animal products is overlooked and in most omnivorous diets and thus may be a lot more in total amino acid content which may be stimulating MTOR even more and this includes complete proteins like you have in meats that can also be formed by combining plant foods so this is a potential factor that may be causing problems by speeding up the aging process, and so you can see that vegan and carnivore diets rule out that factor as they limit net protein and amino acid content to either just plant foods or animal products.
      So most omnivorous diets may be sub-optimal for this reason and maybe we need to be better at measuring our net amino acid and protein content from all the foods we eat. For example: I'm having rice and beans for tea tonight (which make a complete protein/contain all amino acids (which activate MTOR)) so I'm going have the chicken (complete protein/contains all amino acids - which activate MTOR) in the fridge tomorrow with something else like spinach (vegetables with less amino acids because I want to keep my MTOR activation minimal) tomorrow night. This is not something that is talked about enough and so I think people can easily overdo this by eating much larger quantities of amino acids from both animal products and plant foods, than they can from just one or the other (like with vegan or carnivore).
      Simply put: total amino acid content maybe a factor that speeds up aging and it's much easier to over-eat amino acids by combining plant foods with animal products than just eating plant foods or just eating animal products on their own (vegan and carnivore diets).

    Execise and constant movement during the day and evening is my secret , it has to be , at 55 my calcium plaque score is zero meaning 100 percent of men my age have plaque , and I feel and act younger , I bowl , bike , hike , lift heavy weights , bench 235 lbs , leg press 350 lbs , I believe the weights and my food choices have helped me
    the most, and adding Spin class again.

      @simone ambroise I have tried it, and the portitions you can eat after fasting all day like that are very small, you feel full by basically having a glass of water and a few bites, and I have friends that fast that say the same so I am not sure that its as unhealthy as we think!
      My point is that its interesting that someone decided a 1000 years ago that fasting has benefits hence I ask the question to understand the root cause to come up with some rule, religious beliefs are often based on an observed benefit or at least a thought that its beneficial

    My question would be, is there any birth defects in apes and if so at what rate? If there isn’t an overly obvious higher rate of birth Defects, then perhaps is it our environment/diets that are causing it, because our hormones are thrown off by these horrible foods most people are eating now? I wonder if the biggest factor in aging is actually toxicity. It seems to me that the foods and environment that we are in tends to have the biggest effect on aging. Even exercise can be linked to this too, because if you are exercising I believe it’s setting in processes that are actually removing toxins. Exercising helps to use up sugar that is essential removing it from our system. Also caloric restriction that seems to be a huge factor in anti aging, would mean you were taking in less toxins and would allow your body time to clear them out!

    Portion sizes matter. Europeans have a smaller portion size than Americans. The Japanese have a smaller portion size than even Europeans. Life expectancy: Japan > Europe >> US
    If you are eating American portion sizes and switch to either European or Japanese portion sizes, then it's a calorie restriction. But once your stomach gets used to the smaller size, then it's not a calorie restriction. It's just the normal calorie intake.

    I swear by estrogen replacement as a menopausal women. I am 57. I have 2 older sisters who do not replace hormones. The difference is unbelievable. They have mental health challenges, belly fat, muscle wasting, pre-diabetes, bone and tooth loss, cardiac issues etc etc. I have none of that and I have been on estrogen for 10 years.

      It may not be purely because of the oestrogen. I'm 57 and a cyclist, and slim and healthy (though I did ping something in my back recently, which is annoying) and I have great teeth. My resting hr is in the low 40s and my max is in the mid 180s. I don't do hrt, simply because I didn't feel the need. I do RLT and have an earthing sheet on my bed. I eat healthily and do intermittent fasting, amongst other things. My sister is 53, has hrt and is overweight. But she doesn't have the interest in health and longevity, as I do, so her habits are very different.

    I increased my fiber in my diet with a variety of beans and added a V8 fruit drinks (not splash) and cut fried foods. Been on it for about a month. Weighed 285 and dropped as low as 270 but Im floating 275. Cant wait to see results in the next month

    Tom Bilyeu is worth 400 million dollars. ALL of the doctors doing podcasts are millionaires. I am on Social Security along with my best friend and his brother. His brother lives on a monthly check of $1,200. All of this information is great but maybe applies to 5 percent of the population. I am 74 years old and I have never had a blood test and don't have the money for one. I try to eat decent and get my protein from beans and eggs. FORGET $35 a pound grass feed beef. I do the $1.29 a bag dried beans.

    I smoked delta 8 and did gummy’s for two months and seriously looked 10 years older after, so there is some truth on aging faster. My own science experiment done to myself. You can take it or leave it but it was my experience 🧐🥸

      I saw my parent age 10 years in two months when they went through a stressful period. I think we accumulate metabolic wastes and such and then one day, it is like the cells are full and it hits all at once. The smoking and gummy's probably put you over the top, but you were likely due soon and it would have just happened another way probably within a year or two.

    I’d be interested to know if they looked at affects on fertility caused by the decrease of senescent cells. And if they found that it’s best to start this treatment to the mice after the norm fertility window. Especially looking at this for the female mice. So much of the research looks at decreasing senescent activity. I haven’t heard Sinclair or any of the big names speak on this. You can’t abolish all senescent activity because they do play some role(s).

      Aging is inevitable. Even those that have all the money in the world to get procedures age!!! You just don't see it because everything is filtered today. There is no secret to living a healthy balanced life, because everyone's metabolic, genetics, lifestyle is different. Reasons why sometimes the healthiest ppl get cancer. You can wear all the sunscreen in the world and still get fine lines!!! The healthiest ppl studied do not stress about aging The way this generation does. Stop normalizing anti aging and see how less stressed you'll be and how better you'll live.

      @@mirandapillsbury7885 sometimes. consider sunscreen every single day. i dont leave the house without it and i still look 15, no shit. the sun is a MAJOR cause of aging. i use oils, moisturizer, sunscreen, and retinol every day. when i say i will look young in my late 30s, i mean it. kids mistake me as a teen, because i never cosmetically aged past 20. SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN SUNSCREEN! and retinol if you can afford it. but most importantly, sunscreen. never too late to use it. if you already look 30, well, sunscreen will make sure you stay looking 30 in your 40s. i swear by it.

    @17:50: You are 100% wrong with your assumption that "we have zero odds of getting our complete needed muscle maintaining & building blocks with a vegan diet " with all due respect. Complete nonsense. I am plant based vegan (not a so called pudding vegan) for 10 years now and all my health problems disappeared completely and that as i side effect on top of my achieved mind clarity. I am lean and strong with a good amount of high endurance & power performing muscle mass on me. I look atleast 10-15 years younger then i am according to what i hear every day.
    So if you think that way than you definately not knowing enough about the true science of an accurate plant based diet or you did it most prolly completely wrong at some point in your life with what ever you tried there, resulting in this conclusion.
    Btw: I know from watching your very good episodes over the years, that you actualy are looking for a way to stay and feel young as long as possible. Well then let me tell you that your wrong conclusion is something you really need to address then for sure. You lost an important key Tom somewhere . Find it and use it correctly and you will get there.

      1) you are biased in this matter because it is about your lifestyle
      2) we do not have a second control you who would eat eggs, for example, to compare and draw conclusions
      3) your isolated case does not allow drawing conclusions for 8 billion and does not refute research
      4) 10 years is a decent amount of time, but not so huge that you can say with confidence that you are at the peak of your muscle mass and strength and will stay there
      5) no one argues about the benefits of plant-based nutrition in comparison with the standard American diet, almost everything is better than this

    Interesting info guys, but what would the poor do? Not everyone can pay for scans and tests and organic food. Bread, rice, beans, noodles can be cooked many ways and fill an empty belly. They also help make us fat. Without the poor, and the jobs we fill, the world would not turn.

      I don't know about "often." I think you're making broad generalizations based on personal experience. I think "the poor" are probably no more or less hard working than any other tax bracket. Also, I wouldn't confuse showing up to a job every day with "hard work." Even among people working the exact same job, you're likely to find a huge variety of work ethics, be it "poor" jobs or "rich" jobs alike.

      Sometimes it is. Sometimes it isn't. I understand the perils of being financially challenged. I've been there. And there are many reasons any given person might be struggling.
      But there is always a way out. Not saying it's easy. Just saying that nobody should ever resign themselves to being "poor," especially in 2023, when people can make six figures reviewing friggin video games on youtube for crying out loud, or seven figures selling chinese trinkets on amazon.
      I agree that there are many reasons somebody might be struggling financially, but I would argue that the vast majority of these reasons can be overcome in one way or another.
      Some people don't realize that if they put 1-2 hours a day into researching, learning, and trying different ways of making money online, that in a couple years they could be financially independent.

So increasing protein during CR doesn't really tell us anything about CR itself. It'd be like saying "the main benefit to CR is a reduction in sugar, because CR restricted animals on a high sugar diet, don't live longer."
      Don't get me wrong, I think we can agree that excessive protein probably increases mortality. But I don't think he have enough evidence to conclude that protein restriction is the main mechanism of CR-induced longevity.

    I'd think caloric restriction percentage must account for the amount of brain activity. I'm just a regular know nothing dude, but yeah, 60% reduction in calorie will probably make my brain pretty slow and lazy
