I pay for game pass for the games. I can care less about online multiplayer. It is a weird double standard that developers provide free servers for pc yet dont for console. Imo Sony and Microsoft should at the least provide free multiplayer for first party titles
Do you pay for ultimate or console/PC then if you’re just there for the games?
It’s more that Sony & Microsoft charge for access to the network that lets you get to the multiplayer servers, so it’s not necessarily the fault of the developers.
But I disagree, shouldn’t just be free for first party, should be for all games, they make exceptions for games like Fortnite I’m pretty sure
@@J1mothyyy I’ve used both console and pc although I use the console games more. For some games like CK3 you can use console commands on the pc version then import the save to series x via cloud save. It’s also nice to be able to trial games on the cloud without the need to install them. It’s saved me time not having to rearrange drive space for potentially large games.
It would be nice for multiplayer to be free, but the big three have been exploiting their console user base for years and this has just become accepted behavior.
Ooh that's cool that you can do that with CK3. I own CK3 but used my $1 subscription to try Forza 4 out, and play Forza 5 day one.
Clouds cool, but my internet is a satellite on my roof (Starlink sucks here so we had to go for something local) and I get 50mb down on a good day 😭
It really is exploiting at this point. NSO isn't so bad but if they put the prices up they'll be just as bad as Sony and Microsoft
@@J1mothyyy in simp terms windows 10 is going to start charging 5$ or upgrade to 11 basically 360 era before their price hikes
Simp terms? 😂 but yeah it’s dumb, Megacorps are bad
It will never have any better value because these services used to be free and were expected to stay that way.
Unfortunately paying for these services looks like it’s going to remain to be a thing
It was never worth it.
I used to think it was worth it before the price change (i always got it on discount) for the free monthly games , but I think the only game I ever used that I claimed was Maquette
Having these huge libraries is pointless if you're not gonna be playing lots of them consistently. 90%+ of these catalogs I would not touch just by being indifferent about them. I'd rather buy the specific games I want than pay a constant subscription to maybe play a few games off the entire list.
Exactly
It was never worth it, one of the things that pushed me to PC during the PS4/XB1 generation alongside games running at 900p dropping to 20fps all the time. You're entirely correct to call this a scam.
I love consoles for collecting physical games and playing single player games, PC is for multiplayer games/competitive games/strategy games for me personally
@@J1mothyyy I think I care more about ownership on a technical level than I do physical media. Traditionally physical meant ownership but sadly these days it doesn't guarantee you'll be able to play that media in future because the ownership model has changed. A great (read: terrible) example of this is when the disk has 72 MB of data and you need to download 100+ gigs coughcallofdutycough. I have a Switch with plenty of physical games and it's nice but PS and Xbox just don't really have a place for me personally anymore. Things like the steam deck also might just supplant my need for a portable console like the switch as well.
Ownership is super important, and unfortunately you're right, Physical Media doesn't mean ownership.
However, I _am_ a hoarder, and I like collecting physical games.
This is an *old* photo of my collection lmao

@@J1mothyyy that's a dick collection!
Dick? or sick 😂
I miss the good days where you just put the disc/cartridge in the console and i just played the game. No downloads, no DLC, no yearly fees. Just hours of fun.
Same here, times have changed. Just look at what came out yesterday cause of Sony with Helldivers 2
Just mod the consoles that you own. Its a process but its better than going through this modern gaming BS.
Mod the consoles to play online for free or? Or to get the games themselves for free
@@J1mothyyy Yes
@@GUNS_jk I’m too lazy and I like collecting physical 😂
I’m not subscribed to anything now but as a former Gamepass member and former PS Plus Essentials member, my fav is actually PS Plus Essentials.
Thsts cause the 2 games added each month on PS Plus was actually a good pace to catch up to. Gamepass is too overwhelming. There was a period of 3 months in which I was only playing Persona 5. In those 3 months Gamepass felt like such a waste of money cause I was just playing one game.
But when PS Plus prices went up, it became too expensive
So my main gaming method is still to pay and own games (physical copies preferred) and not be on any subscription models.
But thats just me personally
Btw the 2-3 games per month accumulated as long as you click to add them to the library, and they dont go away.
I’d bn a PS Plus member for like 5+ yrs so if I ever decide to rejoin the PS Plus Essentials subscription, I regain access to like 200+ games that got added on over time as 2-3 “free” games per month.
There are a lot in that 200 games list that I still havent gotten to play yet.
So there are some days I feel tempted to renew my PS Plus Essentials… 😅
The 2 games definitely wasn't bad, and I definitely will have a load of games if I ever sign back up, but I'd rather just buy the game when it goes on sale for a good price, and be able to play it when I want, rather than pay for 2-3 months of subscription to play half of it, cause I've got no time to play games anymore 😂😭
@@J1mothyyy yep thats my conclusion. I own close to 2000 games over various generations of consoles: Xbox One, PS4, PS Vita, Switch, Wii U, Wii, PSP, 3DS, PS Vita, PS3…
And 300 games on Steam and on GoG.
That trumps any subscription service any day
Damn, I'm only 940 physical or something 😅
@@J1mothyyy thats still amazing, and wayyy more valuable than a rental subscription 😉👍
I stopped paying for PSN subscription after they increased the price as well.
For how little you get vs how much they charge, it’s not worth it anymore
PSN prices are insane. I got a Series S when that price hike happened when I was ready to get a PS5 lol
@BruhHowDidIGetHere I’m really not a fan of the series S 😂 I worked at GameStop through that release and it really just felt like a shitty version of what already existed lol
@@J1mothyyy Especially for those who only want to play online, which I still believe should be free on all consoles.
Agreed, the fact its not is insane in 2024
Switch Online is the only one I'm fine with subscribing with because it's only $20. Ps plus essential is 4x that and feels limited for the price.
Exactly
They were never worth it. They are a completely unnecessary charge that Microsoft started in the 2000s just because they wanted more money out of people and for no other reason. I left consoles behind, and paying for online is a big reason why.
That’s fair, and I don’t blame you for leaving. I only really got into console gaming cause I got a discount at my work on new releases and then just kept collecting 😂
correction, it was NEVER worth it
Which one? If you’re saying gamepass, after what Microsoft just did, agreed
@@J1mothyyy ALLLLLLL OF THEM
@@J1mothyyy ALL
Fair 😂 I like Nintendo though cause they’re not screwing people at the moment hahaha
@@J1mothyyy talking about Nintendo service to play older games I can do that myself and better
I primary play on pc and i dont think any of the consoles should have paid online multplayer when i can play online multplayer for free both pc and mobile . Also subscription in genral add up over time.
Agreed, Console gamers are getting screwed over
I say no subscription models are really worth it. I want something tangible for the money I spent. Not to pay for an experience, and then have access taken away once my money dries up, or even worse, have access taken away for no good reason.
I don't completely agree that no subscription models are worth it.
I think in cases where you don't care about ownership of an item its useful, and why things like Netflix & Disney+ etc. are good. E.g. I don't care about owning movies, and am likely to just watch them once, but video games, _especially multiplayer games_ I am likely to go back to over and over again, or will want to share with friends, so ownership becomes super important to me then, so in that case I agree subscription models aren't super worth it
Ironic that you are ignoring plenty of the negatives of NSO:
- Online multiplayer used to be FREE until now
- The online methods Nintendo use are ancient, not always stable and is ripe for people to cheat
- The NES, SNES and other retro games used to be purchasable (not streamed) for under $10 on “Virtual Console” for Wii and Wii U
- They let you back up save data onto USB drives before the Switch
- They DRIP FEED titles onto these old game libraries, sometimes ignoring fan favorites
- Their emulation started off horribly with N64 and games did not have great button mapping
Online multiplayer I had no idea. I didnt evaluate the stability of any of the services to be fair, but you’re right, it is rubbish.
Purchasable would be better, but for the price, it’s not bad.
Saving on USB drives should come back. I won’t say the drip feeding isn’t good but there’s likely greater complications than “too hard don’t want to”, but emulation could be better 100%
If you only paying for online no, but if it's for features like game pass or other perks yes. (Ps plus is over priced)
PS plus is way overpriced for what it is
I'm so glad I'm a PC gamer. My XBone PS4 and switch are collecting dust, The only reason I got them in the first place was to keep my kids off my PC .... I'm down to one kid at home and he is a PC gamer now with his own systems, :D LOL!
Needless to say I canceled all my console subscription services.
Fair, and glad to see you’re teaching the next generation 😂
Not worth it. I was a GamePass Ultimate subscriber (since it started), also PS+ and Nintendo Switch Online (also since it began).
I unsubscribed to all these at the end of last year. The online games that I did play, I have restarted on PC (via Steam). Each room in my house has a Steam link connected to the TVs and I stream via Ethernet, so I can play on couch using a controller. I limit to 1080p @ 60Hz (limitation on the Steam Link) and it looks great with no lag whatsoever. To the casual observer it seems that I'm playing on a console.
I figure that if I want to play a game on that's on GamePass I can either buy the game outright or just subscribe for a single month only, play + finish the game or try a few games out and then decide - but NO MORE AUTO RENEW. Same for PS+.
For the classic Nintendo games I just use an emulator and play via Steam. Don't care for multiplayer from the console perspective.
That's fair, I need to find and setup my Steam link, so I can play my steam library from bed 😂
Really good video 👍👍👍
Thank you!
Just to be clear, the retro games for Nintendo Switch Online are divided between only two different pieces of software between regions, so whenever he mentions Australia and New Zealand, he means everywhere in the world except Japan and Hong Kong.
Oh I actually didn’t know that, I figured it’d be pretty similar but didn’t wanna get people’s hopes up by accident for a specific game 😂😅
@@J1mothyyy With this in mind, if you really like old games, you can make a second Japanese account and link it to your Nintendo Switch Online family and Switch to get all the ROMs Nintendo offers in the subscription, AND, it’s cheaper than paying for two separate accounts.
I never thought of doing that, but do the roms support English?
I never thought of doing that, but do the roms support English?
@@J1mothyyy No, they’d be in Japanese, unfortunately. If I wanted to play something like Mother 3 I’d have to go learn Japanese because of how heavily text based it is. However, plenty of games have differences depending on what language or console you play it for, so if you wanted to play Super Mario Bros. 3 for example using the Japanese ROM it is slightly different and you won’t need text to enjoy it.
I have the NSO expansion and game pass ultimate. I'm perfectly fine with those and would rather buy PlayStation games when I get the console.
The more I look at gamepass the more it’s a good offering, I just can’t justify paying that much when I get to play games maybe once a week if I’m lucky 😂
Been playing NieR Automata and I think I’m 7 hours in over a month or so 😭
As for ranking the 3 subscriptions, it is currently Nintendo > Sony > Microsoft. Microsoft can stick with what they're doing, but there's only one way for Sony to gain a new foothold, and that is to provide an offer with their upcoming PS5 Pro:
$499 U.S.
Dualsense Edge Controller included
1 free year of PS Plus Deluxe/Premium
Released Holiday 2024
Without this, Nintendo will remain on top for the next 4 years at least.
I’d disagree, and say Microsoft is doing better with their subscription.
I also think they’re better off dropping the price of extra, I can’t really see Sony doing a full year free.
It’ll be interesting to see if Nintendo does anything different with the Switch 2 and if that changes their service at all
Who?
Sony's strongest library was the PS2. And yet they barely offer PS2 back compat. I swear it's like they hate money.
@cyxceven I have a backwards compatible PS3, and a PS2 for a reason 😂
I got PS+ extra for 1 year for $80. That's a great deal.
What currency? And how much is it for you normally if not one of the currencies I mentioned? 😂 sounds like a good deal
@@J1mothyyy USD and it is normally $135. I got it 2/2/24
Oh that’s not bad, how’d you get the deal?
@@J1mothyyy It was just avalible through the playstation store.
Oh damn, I must've missed it/it wasn't available in my region
Sea of Thieves is online only and i love it
Online only isn’t bad! It’s the subscription model that sucks unfortunately
Well actually, online only has it’s own issues, such as what happens when a game no longer has official support, physical copies become coasters 😂 Like Babylon Fall
Gamepass is 💯 worth it
Yes but, after today, screw Microsoft 😂
80 Free games on Epic and counting
I need to start opening epic again on a regular basis 😂
Nope, not worth it. The only one that is temporarily worth it is PS+ so you can enjoy Bloodborne with your friends or with strangers. Otherwise? LMAO no, make the switch to PC like I did after Sony hit the shitter.
Just do a me, and have every console and PC 😂
@@J1mothyyy I do want a Switch, but I'm waiting on the Switch 2/Pro. Xbox I don't care about because I can just get it all on PC.
@paledrake fair, I’ve had my switch for a while now. Xbox I got cause I got the halo infinite edition (it was a fluke after it sold out), and cause I used to get a discount on games where I worked
Not being able to play your original PlayStation discs on PS5 is stupid imo
Why the original PlayStation specifically?
Backwards compatibility with *all* prior systems is one of the only things XBOX gets right these days besides specs (even if the newer games they have on Series refuse to take advantage of said specs, and, in turn, the 3 games the Series has {woulda been 4, but Hi-Fi Rush turned out to be a *timed* exclusive} are all cross-platform Windows games).
@bachilles3285 very true, but it’s also not complete backwards compatibility which is kinda rubbish, so I gotta buy a 360 now 😂
But also I feel like I should elaborate, I fully agree that all PS games *should* (I understand there’s a lot of difficulties to do so easily and effectively) be backwards compatible, but it seems odd to single out the PS1 specifically
@@J1mothyyy Maybe SONY didn't feel like programming the disc drive to read CDs, I dunno. Microsoft did that for the Series X for reasons, so SONY doing the same thing for the PS5 shoulda been a no-brainer.
No
No?
