    People can do their taxes on an app, why not use similar methods with stricter security. Like being verified on Tinder, the government could use a similar methods with like a driver's license. I don't see why this can't happen soon.

    An app would be great but at the very least all citizens should have a secured government issue email. It's inconceivable that right now the only way to process government paperwork is in person or by mail...

    As a new developer, this really excites me. I'm curious though, how would this deal with the wonky districts (due to gerrymandering), different levels of elections, verification of voters, etc. More importantly, especially as it begins to be rolled out, how would we ensure someone can't vote via the app and then in person? There'd have to be some connection to the "legacy" voting that were currently using to count, right?
    Also, keep being awesome and delivering content like this because this side of CS isn't my forte and I love learning about it.

      A big thing i could see for making sure people are of voting age would be photos of ids. I know of more then a few apps that require that for verification already.

    I am agreeing 100% with what is being said in this video. One thing I hope that is added, if this ever becomes a reality, is an in depth description of what every position in office does and every bill or things of that nature that was signed by which person in any level of office.

    Check out Democracyos. They made an app to educate, debate, and vote on policy to effect the decision of the Representative. A possible direction to start would be an accountability/consent of the governed vote or y/n on policy and expand as possible 🤷‍♂️. One consideration is keeping vote selling to a minimum.

    Any kind of conversation about a voting app needs to include a voting expert, somebody who can talk about the guarantees that traditional paper-based voting processes offer (or are supposed to offer) and that we need to replicate in an app. For example, in Estonia, they vote online using a digital ID card (to avoid Sybil attacks and impersonation) and you can vote several times, the last time always overriding the previous times in order to mitigate against coercion. There is also the constraint that your vote remains secret while being verifiable. All of those guarantees (and I'm pretty sure there are others) need to be replicated in any form of app. Some of these guarantees just cannot be offered by something like a blockchain for example, which makes it suitable to vote on decisions but not to elect people into office. We take those guarantees for granted but they are hard to replicate in a digital format, and we absolutely need to research these, and so long as the generation in power will be 1-technology averse and 2-voter participation averse, it won't happen. But it's one of those things that we need to take into our own hands. And also, coming back to the digital ID card thing, it's something that Americans are going to have to accept at some point: if you want to have a truly efficient digital voting, you need to represent your identity in digital format, and it's gonna rub a lot of people the wrong way, and it's going to be hard to include everyone.

    If an app could be used as secondary voting process and watch the data for 10 years. So many question could be answered and more question could occur.

    The suppression of our vote is a #gop priority; power mongers in all parties, though. Thank you for tackling this fuckery. I’ve been voting for 29 years and they still get be to vote for something I never would; the quadruple negatives and marketing statements make it impossible to know, especially with judges! Mazels on becoming a citizen! 💓💗

    I wrote a blog post this morning that reminded me of this conversation. I think an official app that gives all candidates an equal voice to state their case and convince voters would be a good thing. But the actual voting should be a different thing. Here's how I'd do it. brianchabot.org/2020/11/12-steps-to-better-voting/

    Name one system or app that hasn't been hacked or can't be hacked.

    • @lostboytnt1
      @lostboytnt1 Před 3 lety +1

      There is nothing that 'cannot be hacked' given the proper resources. Regardless of the security of something, given enough time and resources, it can potentially be compromised, anybody that tells you otherwise, is trying to sell you something. Now, that being said, There are reasonable levels of security, that make compromises secure 'enough'. You could build network security to the point where infiltration would require either physical access, inside knowledge, or such an excess of manpower, and/or computing power, that it's not 'worth' trying. Same as with fort knox, you COULD break in, but the resources required to do it would likely require an army to do so.

    why dont we use the an app that has an unbiased knowledge filter it asks you what you know about the candidate and if you fail you have to read up on him/her and other candidates (which will be added on the app] before making the decision.

    Before I have watched the video I just want to say that I am very firmly against e-voting. I think that in theory it has the potential to be the perfect solution, but in practice it never could be. I think that in theory it could be secure, but in practice it never could be.
    And you could easily argue that our current system of voting isn't perfect either, but the reason why our current system of voting with physical paper is still superior is because in order to attack a paper election it requires much much more money energy and people to scale it up to a level that could sway an election, but a electronic voting system, once you found the way in it takes the same amount of effort to change one vote as it would to change 1 million votes

    • @93DavidJ
      @93DavidJ Před 3 lety

      My biggest concern when it comes to e-voting is a voter suppression virus. Basically a virus that you can get on your personal device where you have the app installed that would block your vote from being cast if it detected you were inside of a certain demographic.

    • @93DavidJ
      @93DavidJ Před 3 lety

      Okay I've decided I'm going to live reply to things as I'm watching them in the video. So I'm at about 17:30 And the guy in the top left asked about open source and crypto. And it sounds like he's never ever been in a customer service position. The general public does not have any idea what those words mean and they definitely would not have any idea how to actually validate any of that, or validate that the compiled app that they were running is the same as the open source code base that it's claiming to be from.

    • @93DavidJ
      @93DavidJ Před 3 lety

      All right I'm at about 18:30 and I absolutely agree with you Ray, The United States is going to be a major target and entire countries will be dedicating their most powerful supercomputers to cracking that code. But, they're also going to be doing that even if we don't have it open source. If we did it at all I still think it should be open source so that people can report security flaws easier. Because just as many people with good intentions white hat hackers would also be trying to find security holes. Having an open source I think is going to be something that would attract white hats, whereas having it closed source won't prevent black hats from trying to penetrate the security of it

    • @93DavidJ
      @93DavidJ Před 3 lety

      I'm at 19:00 and I'm honestly kind of appalled at the idea of giving it to a company. And having a company handle it. That's probably the absolute worst idea possible. It would be completely impossible to have a company do it without there being a conflict of interest involved somehow. Maybe if a company submitted the first commit to a code base and after that it was in the hands of the American public maybe. But then you have the issue of who gets to review commits

    • @93DavidJ
      @93DavidJ Před 3 lety

      Okay so I'm at 21:22 and I think the biggest thing in terms of fear is going to be in people who are aware of cyber security. Who are more technical savvy. Because those are the people who are going to be the most aware of the possible downsides of something like this. They're going to be the ones that are going to be familiar with the idea that nothing is bug free. If you told a programmer that they would be charged with treason if the voting app they designed had any security bugs in it at all there wouldn't be a single programmer that would be willing to take that job.
