How I learnt it in my polisci class is that you look at multiple types of media, from all sides and then use your critical analysis skills to come to a conclusion. If there's research related to it, you read the research too

I try to check any news on 3-5 different sources
    1. Usually a very similarly minded news company.
    2. One on the opposite side of the political spectrum.
    3. One source in the middle.
    optional
    4. One news company based in a different country that won't be affected by the news being delivered.
    5. One more source from Switzerland.
If any article cites sources double check them.
If there are any scientific papers I'll read them to see if they are lying with statistics.

Click on the links in the story you read online. Follow into the rabbit hole and check their source. Is it a recognized source or is it a blog or opinion writer. Check the authors other work for bias too. Thats some of the things I check when I'm sent stories or see things on the Internet.

It depends on the subject. If it's about Covid or the vaccine I go to the CDC's website and the WHO. And then I go to the pages of actual nurses, physicians, and doctors in the medical field. If it's about stimulus checks, what happened with Wallstreet. I go to pages of actual economists and people who are erudite on finance and economics. If it's a natural disaster, I go to AP (associated press), Reuters, and The New York times. Occasionally the guardian if I can't find anything on the NY times.

I usually try to locate the name of the author, look for more of their articles, check their social media and then see if there's at least 3 more articles that confirm the contents(if its a political article.) Look at the source, are they reputable?
Look at the author, who are they and do they have a sales pitch?
Related: check if it's "sponsored" or hidden as being so (not everything demarcates itself as such!)
    Check alternative but reputable viewpoints

I do a couple things when fact checking information:
    1. I always read articles before liking/commenting/sharing. Article titles can be extremely misleading
    2. I will always trust a .org/.edu site over a .com site. Furthermore, I check the “about” section of every website to find their statement of purpose.
    3. I look into the author of the article if there’s one listed and read other pieces by that author to see if I can piece together where their biases might lean
    4. I look to see where the info originated from, and if any other news sites are talking about it
    5. I try to find any “studies” listed. Many times, the “studies” they talk about either don’t exist or are studies sponsored by big companies, giving the study an automatic bias towards whatever that company wanted them to find.
    6. Look for the date the article was published. Many times, people grab old headlines and pass it off as being current, or as something that was directly influenced by current events (that story about Ford moving operations from Mexico to Ohio comes to mind)
    7. Check my own biases. Although it’s probably the hardest thing on this list to do, being aware of your own bias will allow you to better see when you’re falling down a bias hole specifically created for you. Also, confirmation bias is real and can be a real problem.
    8. Always assume the story is propaganda, so always ask questions. My favorite question: what do I still not know after reading this article?

Basic out line of my Research method:
    1. Find an interesting topic.
    2. What is its level of relevance to the world (or discipline that it is a part of)
    3. Collect all the information possible. From as many sources as possible.
3a. Make sure to have as many primary sources as possible. Avoid anything below secondary sources.
3b. Make sure to collect information from as many different schools of thought as possible.
    4. Verify the reliability of the source.
4a. Are they somebody that is ACTUALLY knowledgeable on the topic? Or, do they claim knowledge?
4b. How much evidence do they present to support this claim of knowledge?
4c. Do they have an agenda?
4d. Are they claims pseudo-scientific or "Alternative Truth" findings?
    5. Does this information agree with the current body of knowledge on the topic?
    5a. If not, why not?
    6. Are they claiming to have found out something new?
6a. How far from established research is this finding?
6b. Is this a finding that can be backed up by empirical evidence?
    7. Once information is gathered and interrogated, gather up all relevant parts of research.
    8. Put results into a coherent narrative.
8a. This narrative MUST be unbiased and objective.

If I suspect something on social media isn't real, what I typically do is: Google search the social media post, complete with whatever bad grammar and spelling errors that the 'meme' or post had. Often times, I'll find it on Snopes, where they'll tell me the real version of the story. If I don't find it there, I go to snopes directly and start searching for keywords from the post. Typically I'll find some part of it that helps to give me the real story

A way to counter this extremely important problem imho is to teach kids in school how it is done. Digital Awareness should be a part of the mandatory curriculum from an early age. I am currently trying to convince Canadian education ppl of this, they are subject to the phenomena itself tho which makes for an ironic sitch indeed.

Something that I do to prevent tracking is I use an RSS reader on my computer for CZcams videos, Reddit, Tiktok, Instagram, etc. That way it doesn't know if I saw a specific post or not because RSS links are public, the sites only know which URLS of the posts I open (to read Reddit comments or to see a CZcams video, or things like that).
Edit: Plus RSS articles can be saved offline after they've been downloaded!

Also recently i've been trying to read more and listen to more stuff that disagrees with my opinion or said topic to see what similarities there are and how vast the difference is just to look at more perspectives. Recognizing that my perspective is not necessarily always "correct" even when it feels like it is.

Thing is that I thought that I was being very safe with my online activity's but then you pop up in one of my socials. Which means that I probably wasn't being careful enough or that the algorithm thought that I was just more critical in the information that I look at. Either way I am glad that you have popped up in my feed all all though's months ago as I have finally found someone that is spreading the information that I have been trying to tell people to be more aware of.
The things that I try and do are exactly what you laid out in the video. I don't listen to just one news article or one presenter. I have a VPN on all the time that I am connected to the internet and if I am trying to look in more detail to a news article I refresh the VPN IP log out of any services that I am using e.g. google/bing and never 100% trust everything that is posted on social media. If the news story is only hoping up on one news site and social media applications then I don't believe it. And I question everything that is in the article. I look for the research papers that they talk about, basically I go down a rabbit hole of the information that they try and spew out and keep on asking "How?" and "Why?"

  • @StavrosD

The best way for objective information is listening all sides.
Visit websites of both parties, lets' say country A and country B. Try to visit websites written in the local language, just translate them using a translation tool hosted in another country(not A or B) .
In the last few years I met people from different cultures. Europe, Cuba, China, Turkey, USA, etc. There are many good and bad stereotypes for each country. There are good and bad people in every place. People makes the difference, not stereotypes.

  • @kevinpowers2959
    @kevinpowers2959 Před 3 lety

    1. If I'm unsure of the veracity of a news story, I ask myself who benefits from it being true. It might not be that the person writing it is lying, they could have gotten information from someone else who was lying or even just ever so slightly twisting the truth to their benefit. Even subconsciously. If I have multiple, unconnected info sources with no stake in a particular claim being true, I feel more confident in something being true.
    2. I try to have a cohesive world view. If I read something that doesn't fit into my understanding of the world without clashing with something else, I'll hold it in a in a kind of idea-purgatory until another piece of information comes along that corroborates it. That clashing feeling tells me either what I learned is wrong, what I previously believed is wrong, or my understanding of the situation was insufficient and after learning more about the topic, the mechanic makes more sense.
    3. I really like having friendly arguments with people. Sometimes I'll take one of the points that are in my "idea-purgatory" (nothing potentially dangerous like Q for example) just to try them on for size. There have been many times where I argued a point with someone and it took me writing it out or saying it out loud to understand why my understanding of the topic was wrong. This requires that you commit yourself to arguing *only* in good faith. If you're arguing something that you don't believe because you know it will stump an ideological opponent, you are the problem.

  • @afistfulofvideos
    @afistfulofvideos Před 3 lety

    Great job, Rey!
As for how I verify news:
    1. Over here in Europe it's a "little" easier as independent news and very established news are the norm as far as I experience it.
Some of them are also available in English (I'm in Germany).
    2. I do get newsletters from unis about economics, politics, and the like that I can double check regular news with.
    3. Another think I do is subscribe to www.nap.edu/ to know more about the framework of things to then filter from there.
I think the worst thing about this problem is the convenience factor of just "going with the headline". Research takes time and sadly by the time you could verify something that headline influences things around it no matter if it's true or not by the time you know what it is.
Please keep making more of these!

And for sharing stuff I barely share stuff even tho I would loved to share more with my friends and family they quiet frankly don't care about the news or continue to support the same thing they did for the past many years so that a waste of time and for public forums or social media I keep interactinons to a minimum when it comes to politics or other related stuff and only share facts with proof that are true instead of the whole article's which I know they won't read completely. Hello. Thank you for sharing.
My approach to researching stories I am deeply interested in is:
    - read full article with an open mind
    - find keywords in the article I read, and design a couple searches on Google (shamefully covering eyes) or PubMed (for medical/scientific stories) to verify validity of the original claims
    - clean up keywords and go on Twitter to find people opinions using my keywords. If I get annoyed or interested in an opinion: (1) view other positions from this person, (2) view general opinion that people I follow may have of the new source I found or of the story, (3) only follow people who’s opinions you have come to respect (this requires unfriending people if necessary)
    Cheers!

I check sources or use snopes for things. I'm Canadian, so while our new organizations have bias & some like to cherry-pick, none of the major ones lie, (outside opinion pieces) so I will look for articles on the same thing from other organizations. I make a point of including one of the conservative newspapers in my news intake for this reason, despite the fact that they are ideologically bankrupt. (They still don't make stuff up outside their opinion pieces, so it is not like Fox.) (Also it pays to know what the other side is focusing on.) Also, me and my friends like to talk about current events & fact check each other & stuff. (We are all pretty interested in unvarnished truth, so it works.)

I can never explains well because I cant communicate properly like other people it's a neurological proublem I need to see a neurologist to be sure what's going on. Anyway I feel you just said everything I was thinking and how I feel on this matter. Thank you being my voice without even knowing. My method is when I read something that catch my eyes and start reading about it. I try to find more article from different sources to see if it's True or not. Like I watch a video about portals on earth and find out that in space there are portals on space that open and close all the time for a short period of time. I thought it was really cool and I look up more information from NASA website and yes there are portals opening and closing all the time. But they are not the portals you think they are. In today time portals generally mean like the portal to the nether in minecraft and back to the overworld in minecraft. But what they are referring to is that of a door way. Yes there was I time door way ment a portal. Once I found that out I was a bit upset but i did learn something from it .

Query : could you make a video like this that we could share, that doesn't have individual opinions in it? I personally absolutely agree with you, but unfortunately, many people who I would want to follow this type of thinking, and how to research what's fake and biased, the moment they saw you for example speaking I'll of trumpf, it would immediately flip their opinion and viewpoint of the entire video, and they would just see it as the liberal media trying to discredit their (flawed) viewpoint
I think letting them find the truth for themselves, instead of pointing it out to them might have a better chance of accomplishing the impossible task of them actually seeing the truth.

I understand your disdain you have for some certain person; I always hear, they are so vile a person, but never a reason that holds water. For all the reasons, all the facts spewed forth there is always a biased source or untrue instance. Jan 6th a speech set forth a deadly insurrection, but now it's becoming more know that it was planned and started well before a speech and mostly by members of groups that have been practicing all summer long. There are people giving accounts of the horror that were not even there at the time. Yet as blatant as I see wrongs done others see the saintly acts of the accusers as the truly assaulted. I stop and wonder if I’m wrong. I look at what is before me, you don’t get the money unless he’s fire, son in the pocket still to this day to china. Then I have to ask isn’t that much worse and do you ever think about if you’re wrong.. no wars and middle east peace is kinda a good thing …no?
