I'm a nail tech and got an allergy in less than a year. :( I wish I knew what I knew now. The main thing is to avoid nail products that contain HEMA, HPMA and Ethyl acrylate, which are hard to come by. The brands I know of are Ikon IQ, Light Elegance and Diamonds & Gloss but everyone is different and may react differently. I am now not using enhancements at all and specializing in natural services with Dazzle Dry. It is an awesome nail polish that lasts like gel but removes with polish remover. It also dries rock hard in 5 mins. It's the best.

I am from America and I do my nails at home and I was doing gels. I developed an allergy that caused the skin around my nails to blister, peel and bleed. It was itchy and painful. Once I stopped doing the gels and switched to acrylics (liquid and powder) I haven’t had any problems at all. I also always do my nails outside on my porch and clean my area after so my kids or pets don’t get into it.

      @TheBloodofAges Před 5 lety +3

I've been using hybrid gel products and getting horrible blisters around my fingers. Gel is still technically acrylic. Acrylics still contains acrylates, which is what causes the allergies. However, I think it's much easier to keep liquid and powder systems off the skin, that may be why you're having better luck with them.

😢 it’s more about learning how to do it properly to avoid potential problems. Nail products need to be treated with respect and with full knowledge of it can cause issues, much the same as prescription drugs or alcohol, if used appropriately it minimises most risks ♥️♥️♥️

I, too, got a bit lazy after doing my nails by not cleaning my desk thoroughly after filling. Now I have blisters on every finger! I've been doing nails over 25 years, but gel & polygel for 3 years or so. I don't work in a salon anymore and switched careers. My fingertips are always tender and wonder how long this will last. It's going on about 4 months now. I would post a pic on here but don't know how...
      I miss my beautiful nails!😢😢

It sucks so bad to be allergic to what I love doing! I'm extremely careful now to make sure I'm not getting dust in myself or any product and not just on myself but my clients too. Great video. Nail tech from Montreal, Canada here. I haven't experienced any reactions myself aside from a sensitivity to the cuticle softeners and callus softeners we used when I did my training course. As soon as I saw symptoms (peeling and sensitive skin within 24 hours after being exposed) I asked that when my practice partners did my manis and pedis they didn't use those products.
When I was signing up for the course however the person I spoke to at the school said she'd gotten acrylics done at a salon roughly a year ago and when she had them removed they simply stuck a nail tip under the acrylic and pulled the enhancements off. Even a year later her natural nails were weak and sensitive from the ordeal.
Based on what I've seen and heard from speaking to my fellow techs and the techs in training I learned alongside, there isn't much information available in Montreal about the difference between a certified tech and a non standard salon, so people think all techs and salons are interchangeable. Some people don't even know that a certification is available for nail techs, they think it's people turning hobbies in to careers.
Additionally, when I was taking this course (a CND certified course!) I was given only a few lessons about how to use gel products to create an enhancement, and in the course of those lessons we did not cover: what gel is, what the structure of an enhancement should be, how to build a proper enhancement, how to file that enhancement in to a proper shape that won't break, or why you need to cleanse the sticky layer after curing (aside from it being sticky).
If it weren't for me being very interested in learning as much as I can and searching out good nail techs on social media before I ever started that course I know for a fact that I would be a terrible nail tech simply because I wouldn't know that allergies are a possibility, or that files can cut skin if you're not careful. I'm certified to use gels and create gel enhancements, but 90% of what I know about proper and safe gel usage did not come from the course that certified me.

    • @Murrfle
      @Murrfle Před 6 lety +5

I'm currently only doing private sessions at my clients' homes while I look for a salon to base out of. It's hard to find one that's not going to gouge me on the rental fees, or make me choose between servicing my clients quickly or safely. One place I went to check out I saw the owner tell a tech not to throw out a file and buffing block that were "still good", completely ignoring the tech when she tried to explain they were used on a client with fungus.

Props to you. I have been trying to find an online nail tech course in Ontario Canada, as where I live (northern Ontario) there are few salons. But I want all the info, not juamst bare bones (I have a diploma in database design and admin, but not enough experience to get a job in the field, andcan't get a job to get experience in the field (because not enough experience) my point is, I don't want to go that kind of 'learning institution' again. Currently learning on my own, trying to figure out why my gel manis come off within 2 days. I try to see the positive. Its great practice for my non dominant hand lol. If you know of an online course that is worth it, svp let me know. I really dont do well in crowded spaces, especially since my service dog was put down last sept. Thanks and good luck to you!

Natasha, Thank you so very much for your informative video. I have extreme allergies, asthma and immune issues, so I am always careful, but I'm sure many others are not aware. In the U.S., we hear about sanitary cautions rather than allergies. I've known women with terrible bacterial or fungal infections from unclean salons. If I purchase a hair or nail service, I always pay extra for a clean, sanitary salon with stylists and technicians with professional credentials and safe practices. I inform my professional about my health issues, so they can be aware of my needs. I ALWAYS ask to wash my hands when the service is completed. I cannot stress this enough....Ladies, your professionals are WORTH your loyalty, fee payment and generous tip!! Find a great professional, pay them their fair wage and tip and be loyal!! The true professional who has the proper education and credentials have earned that.

Thank you for making this video! When I started to do my own nails 4 years ago, I took a whole year of research and practice with regular nail polish before I dared to touch gel. I followed Doug schoon religiously (top nail scientist), subscribed to the face-to-face informational nail videos. Took a online nail course from the academy of nail design and bought the most up to date Milady Nail technology text book. From the start I understood the importance of the use nitrile gloves ( the ones from Napa auto parts), to never mix gels and lamps, keeping all nail products off skin, and all other nail safety. I think its hard for nail enthusiasts and techs alike because of so much misinformation, contradictions and plain ignorance clouding the nail world. When I started joining nail groups, many educators were mean. As though you were only worthy of information if you had a license. That type of attitude is one of the contributors to this problem. Everyone interested in doing nails or getting them done at the salon should have easy access to this valuable information. This why I love Doug schoon because all the articles and pictures he publishes are available to everyone. You are such a talented nail artist. Thank you for using your platform to give out this priceless information. I wish more licensed nail techs and educators were willing to generously teach the way that you do.

I have to give you a BIG thank you, for talking about this. This is the first time I see someone talk about this. I have had allergies from two different products, and no one could tell me why this is happening and howto handle it. I am still recovering from my last allergic raction from UV builder gel nails and it was awful. The first time was from UV nail polish and my nails almost fell out. Not to mention all the pain I had to endure, since I was not able even to write on my keyboard. It was awful. Thank you for speaking out about this.
so, I am from Bulgaria, not a nail tech, the first time I went to a salon for a couple of months for UV gel polish - no allergies, all good. After that I began doing my nails at home with the same brand polishes. For the first couple of months there was nothing troubling, all good. The winter came, and my nails began to hurt. I mean they were red, swolen and very sensitive. I thought it was Winter allergy, so I continued to put polish on (BIG mistake). The last time I put on polish I took it off 2 hours after aplying since the pain was unthinkable. The removing did nothing. My nails and fingers continued to hurt 2-3 months after, my fingernails were "cracked" and the wounds did not want to heal, the nails were flopping from my skin under them. It was a mess. Fortunately, 4 montsh after numerous cremes and...just time passing, my nails and fingers healed. I decided that this was deffinitely from the UV nail polish since I have never experienced anything like that before using it, but there was 0 information about this issue on the internet. I guess no one knew, or no one has spoken out about it.
The second time I had this problem was 4 months ago, I decided that I wont have the allergie from a UV builder gel, so I decided to try - I wen to a salon again. And it was great at first. My nails were gorgeous, no pain, no swollen fingers... cut to 3 months later. Again the same symptoms, the pain was unbearable. But this time I managed to "catch" it on time and luckyly the damage was not that big. My nais are still recovering, they are little bit weak and break at the free edge, but nothing troubling.
In conclusion - 1st time it took around 3 months to see a reaction, 2nd time again around 3 months.\
    I hope I have been helpful :)

BRAVO to you and THANK YOU for making this video! I was diagnosed by an allergist with a hema/di-hema allergy in the early '90s. It was brought on by overexpose AS A CLIENT at a NSS that incorrectly bathed my sidewalls and cuticle areas in monomer regularly! I continued use of enhancements on myself and now as a nail technician student with products that do not contain the ingredients I am allergic to, along with following strict operational protocols.
I cringe when I watch YT videos of nail professionals that routinely practice measures that have been proven to lead to overexpose; Unskilled use of a colossal brush for L&P services which results in monomer flowing all over the skin. The use of unopposed monomer to pat down previously combined L&P product. I saw a tech recently placing gel polish on their skin! Tapping down glitter, chrome, pigment, ect. into an inhibition layer with their fingers! It would be so sad to ban the sale of products, as most of the time - it's the misuse of the product. If a manufacturer or supplier does not offer a copy of the ingredients/SDS on the site before purchase, strongly reconsider the purchase!
Gloves and ventilation aside, the blatant ignorance I see daily (online forums) from professionals regarding how to handle a reaction is alarming. Instructing clients to take/use Benedryl or haphazardly changing products in an attempt to "fix" the issue. Even proclaiming a client has a "allergy" is incorrect. In the US that is outside our scope of practice and could be construed as practicing medicine without a license! Should a client complain or if you are a DIY nail artist and experience a reaction STOP using the product! A doctor visit is the ONLY way to know what you are allergic to (through testing) and the only professional qualified to treat a reaction! The statement that one is allergic to "acrylic service" is like saying a person with a poison ivy allergy is allergic to weeds.
THANK YOU again for your time and professionalism - it is very refreshing to see proactive education in the industry, especially on this platform:-)

THANK YOU SO MUCH, NATASHA! 🙏
I’m training to become a nail technician, here in Australia (Certificate III in Nail Technology,) and we spend LOTS of time studying Occupational Health & Safety. One area of particular interest to me in this subject is the *PREVENTION of allergies and contact dermatitis*. Now, there is one particular topic we’ve yet to cover (and I’m not certain that we will,) so I’d love your feedback: I’m aware that when using acrylic systems some technicians seem to prefer sculpting their client’s nails using one or *maybe* two beads. But it seems that this often requires a somewhat “wetter” liquid/powder ratio. Seeing as how this results in a longer drying/curing period, is it therefore the case that the client is more prone to adverse reactions from the uncured monomer? I’m aware of the feeling of “tightness” that a client can experience when their extension(s) are still drying/curing hours later, but I’m yet to hear about the effects of uncurled monomer in the context I’ve just mentioned...🤔 Hence me asking you! 😉
Thanks Natasha, and love from Oz
    ❤️🧡💛💚💙💜

This is an excellent video! Education is key! I've been wearing gloves for a while now and they make a massive difference 👌🏼 but that's because I suffer with eczema and sensitive skin anyway so I'm always careful about chemicals being near my skin. But for people who don't usually have issues, it's so important for them to understand that they can still develop sensitivities to products. Love your videos Natasha 👏🏻

Thank you for this educatonal video! I do my own nails at home, and had no idea what I was exposing myself to. I've not had any reactions, but certainly have had lots of uncured gels exposures. I did recently order a dust blower with filter, but don't have it yet. Appreciation here for all you do!

I started doing gel nails at home. I bought good quality gel using mostly OPI products. I wanted to try something cheaper so I ordered some cheaper gel from amazon. I would start getting severe cuticle itching after my manicures but I just ignored it. It took me breaking out in hives all over my body and extremely damaged skin and nails to realize that I was allergic to the chemicals in the gels. Never buy low quality gel! And don’t dismiss any irritation because it can lead to bigger issues.

Great information. I have been doing my own nails for over a year now - and for me, apart from the things you mention, the most important advice is to TAKE YOUR TIME. I do. It takes me 3 hours every four weeks, but being careful is crucial. I think many of the problems in the industry come from the hurry and wanting to make money as quickly as possible. When you are in a hurry, you are doomed to make mistakes and not see small spots of product in some wrong places.

I've started doing my own nails after a bad experience, was sent home with thick nails, and uncured gel polish that I'll say puckered, I could squeeze the uncured polish out through little bubbles on my nail. I removed the gel nails myself with a dremel and hand file. I love your videos so informative 🙂💅

Hi Nat, I have been doing my own nails for 18 months, self taught. My hands actually degloved twice, the blisters were huge, the itching was out of this world. The pain horrendous. It was the MMA in the monomer. My dermatologist said that it has now kick started eczema. I can't use gels, acrylics, gel polish, nothing at all. It has been awful. I spent hundreds of pounds on my equipment. It is all now stored away. I loved doing my own nails and miss having them so much. Thank you for your video. I did speak to my MP about this.

Thanks for the information. Years ago I was getting my nails done at a local salon and developed a reaction to one of the products. Although they claimed they were using gel, it was put on like acrylics, and then the a layer of gel was applied and cured. After several months, my nail beds would start burning and itching following the curing process. This would last for a day or two, but would recur after each manicure. I discontinued use of any gel or acrylics for several months then moved on to having silk wraps applied. For the past year, I have been doing my own nails, using gel or a dipping system that requires curing but have not had any further issues.

So my first reaction was from acrylic at a salon. It was a week before my wedding and I had completely lost my pinky nail. It started with blisters under and around the nail. At first I thought it was escema, it was a preexisting condition I was dealing with but on the top of my hand. I'm a home user now and I recently tried using Polygel in hope that I can still have nails without the reaction, and yet after 24 hours I was already experiencing blisters on all of my fingers. The blisters are itchy and cause the skin around my nails to be very dry. Its aweful waking up in the middle of the night to your fingers just on fire and itchy. I just took off the polygel nails today and my skin is so incredibly dry. I've been trying to find research on what reaction I'm having, if its allergic or a chemical burn. Thank you so much for the educational video and the hard work, research you've put into this.

The only issue i ever had although still terrible and shouldn't of happened and could have ended very badly with the worst just being an infection was a pedicure. After the incident which happened when was 16 I have still never gotten another pedicure, i am now 34. The girl that did my pedicure for a wedding made everyone of my toes bleed. After which put polish on right after. The whole experience was horrible. I'm lucky I didn't get an infection or worse. I didn't realize how bad it was until I got older and started doing my own nails and learning from people such as yourself. Thanks for making this video it's not talked about enough! God Bless

THANK YOU, NATASHA! I have said for ages that having acrylics put on my nails ruined the quality of my nails and the pictures of that poor woman's nails prove it. I had acrylics put on for the first and last time in a generic nail studio seven years ago. Now, aside from the fact that this mob were a bunch of butchers, I knew within 24 hours that I was having a reaction to the acrylic. Every bit of skin that I touched (particularly my face) ended up red, very raw and incredibly itchy and my fingers were constantly itchy and swollen, regardless of how much I washed my hands. I was in agony for the three days it took to figure out it was my nails (which I had done for my sister's wedding). I went and had them professionally removed in a different and far more up-market studio by a qualified nail tech which relieved the initial reaction but the legacy of that horrible weekend is still around all these years later. My nails are completely ruined. They constantly split badly and it takes a lot of work to get decent growth. The skin around my nails isn't great but it's not as bad as it was.
I also now suffer from pompholyx (dyshidrotic eczema), which is basically a contact dermatitis that causes horrible, itchy clusters of blisters through the top few layers of skin. I developed an allergy to preservatives in things like detergents, skincare, shampoo, etc. I have to be incredibly careful to clean my skin after using any nail products. I only do my own nails now. I keep to the five-free nail polishes to avoid as many nasties as I can but I never really know how effective that actually is.

I teach nail technology and I am very particular with health and safety in the classroom and have always advised students about becoming sensitive to nail products and how to avoid becoming sensitive to these. Every precaution you have mentioned I have given to my students and I make sure it is applied in practical classes. I became very very sensitive to the point my skin cracked when I started using nitrile gloves. I now have to use cotton gloves plus latex gloves over the cotton. One of my students developed and instant allergy to nitrile gloves while putting on a set of acrylics, she took the gloves off and her skin was burning. There is a reaction with monomer and nitrile that can cause a fast reaction on the skin. Maybe you can research that further. But it is very important not to let the products near skin, because at some stage one can become very sensitive if one is not careful.
