- Gav has finally entered the 21st century with a brand new, 7.4 kW EV charger, and as you can see, he loves it! Perhaps a little too much...
The charger is a 7.4 kilowatt AC (alternating current) unit from the Evnex, and as you can see, this New Zealand made charger is really well designed and easy to use.
It's got everything from "solar diversion" (which sends power to your car instead of the grid) to remote control functions for when you need to control the charger remotely. It also comes with a SIM card built-in, and it has free internet connectivity FOR LIFE!
EVnex sell this just-released "E2" charger in New Zealand for $1395, but if you're across the ditch in kangarooland, then you can get it now, too! It's available at www.evnex.com/home-charging
And if you're keen on cutting your carbon footprint, come and join us at Ecotricity, which is now New Zealand's only climate positive electricity provider! That means by switching today, you're actually turning back the clock on Climate Change, while saving money in the process.
Sounds too good to be true, right? Well, it's not! Ecotricity is real, with really affordable electricity, thanks to it being purely renewable.
Head to www.ecotricity.co.nz and chuck in your address to see how much money & carbon you can save right now. It's that easy and it makes a real, positive difference for the next generation. - Auta a dopravní prostředky
Man I can't believe I had to wait six minutes 30 to see you do bad drag...still...great review.
Well done for promoting locally made product Gavin. It is also exciting to hear about your upcoming solar system installation. Upwards and forwards from here.
That's a lot of effort for a very short site gag. Love it! 🤣
Haha, I'm just glad someone noticed! :D
Installed an Evnex charger a couple of months back, fantastic unit!
"All done in the best possible taste!"
Very good explanatory video, I’ve watched some where I’m more confused after watching it than I was before watching it!
I'll be honest, I didn't know they made home charging cables that long! Ill definitely be looking into getting one for the side of my house to cover the whole driveway.
Some of your references Gav were well very familiar, very...like setting up the VCR recording schedule or the mention of dial-up. Can you imagine the Millenials with their snapchat or instagram having to deal with dial-up. Great video on the install process. Good to have the electrician willing to come on camera as well to answer some questions as they installed it.
Millennial here! We remember dialup and VCRs very well - we’re older than you think (sadly)
They sell them in Australia, so will be getting one installed, excess solar export to charger is a great idea
In ireland I got my 7kW charger installed for €1299 but got €600 back from the government and it has 7m of cable. Problem is that it is too far from my stone house and cannot pick up the wifi. Now I have to install a new wifi system beside it. It let's me charge my PHEV on the 2 hour super cheap rate during the night.
Super informative. Thanks.
You're welcome, mate. I know I was gushing over the thing, but it's just so cool!
Brilliant video and especially interesting as we're planning on upgrading our old 7kW charger to an Evnex on the advice of our installer so we can restrict it to PV only power when required , then Ecotricity can have what's left after our Paladin diverter also feeds some our HWC.
The real question from us though is how many potatoes have you got stuffed down that bra? That gag was spit out my coffee hilarious!!
Great video as usual! Keep up the gags!😂😂😂
Omg an Allegro!
These are also in Australia.
Been uming and ahhing about getting one as $2.2k installed.
Had ev less than a month and so far slow charger seems to work ok.
But yes the E2 looks awesome
For a charger that can work in with solar production, that’s a fair price to be honest. If you have a decent size solar system, I think this type is the way to go. Initial cost is more than the likes of the Tesla gen3 but no doubt it would pay itself off after a while. I wish the cable was the same as the Tesla at jut over 7mtrs. With a double car garage, 5 metres might be stretching to reach the second car?
@@oldchev2850 same.
That 7metre length is handy.
The Tesla Gen3 is WAY cheaper installed at around $1500 installed, but no smart features are a bummer
@@TheMelbournelad At least there seems to be a few choices and they're improving all the time. I spoke to a local installer(in Australia) and he said out of all the brands, Evnex had by far the best support.
I have an enphase solar system and I see they are bringing out IQ EV chargers so I might end up waiting for that. I like the idea of the charger and the solar being on the same app.
@@oldchev2850 100% for what you get and the support the $700 extra is worth it
Installation charge is a bit steep for a 2 - 4hr job. But wall charger instillation charges are almost always steep no matter where in the world you are living. Money for jam for your average installation job.
Nice little unit..
Solar Diversion is a must have feature for anyone considering/have solar panels.
Do they do a choice of cable length? Often find 8m+ is much easier!
Oh, did you mention where that unit was made?
Hard to beat caravan plug at 13 amps, but at long term faster charger might pay itself.
Assuming car uses 300w overhead while charging, cutting charge time 7kw vs 3kw saves 180kw.
Assuming $2500 upgrade and 12ct/kwh, that's 0.0216$/h or 115741 hours of charging or 810mwh of power or 5.4M km at 15kwh/100km efficiency.
I wonder if EVNEX will do an upgrade offer against my older model….
Blonde suits you Gav!
My Mercedes EQE AMG arrives in September, want to take it for a spin?
Can you get a longer cable if needed?
I do wish the charger had a removble cable. We have an Eesee charger here which lets you easly swap the cable out, convinient if you find you need a longer or perhaps a shorter one is more convinient
Evnex do also sell charges with a socket. That is what I got installed at my home.
I agree that the removable cable is good if owning a car with Type 1 charging plug but you are expecting to upgrade to a car that takes Type 2
6:51 Eating mashed potatoes, while watching this. couldn't have accidently planed this better
Tesla Powerwall is cheaper with longer cable!
A lot of hydro in Kiwiland, so not that hard too plug into a RNables grid
Not too serious, excellent video. Only thing is I don't think this EVSE is OCPP compliant. I think that's something everyone should look into with a charger. It's not essential but when the time comes that you want your EVSE to talk to the grid, you're going to want it. It also seems to be a totally different EVSE they are offering on their website.
It is OCPP compliant
@@pariandangel Then why don’t they mention it on their website?
@@mondotv4216 It is mentioned on there website in support documentation.
@@pariandangel Ok - I thought they would have made a bigger deal about it as it's quite an important feature.
No fire hazards Charging in the garage.
Was that your sister? Single by any chance?

Ah, so it's "Evie-necks"? I was pronouncing it as "Evan-Ex"... Nice choice, though.
Here's a quick Q: when you go for solar PV I suppose there'll be another app to look after the inverters and power gained, etc. Will Evan's, sorry, Evie's app talk to that app? Then there's battery storage, home hot water systems, maybe a heat pump - you're gonna need a bigger phone... 🤣
$595 more than the Tesla Wall Charger and a 2.3m shorter cable… 😢
meanwhile, entire world is running on at least 7kW charger at home Gavin :)
"slow trickle charger" - also capable of 7kw..
7KW is state of the art?! Not 22?
22KW is only for 3 phase electricity supply.
Very few NZ homes have 3 phase supply.
The thumbnail is so horrible on this video that it actually put me off buying this product, I'm not sure whose idea that was!!
I'm hoping your leaf gear is type two , is it from a UK import or nz new leaf or the one in 10 unicorn 🦄 jap import ?
Mmmmmaybe! Hit the subscribe button and you'll see just how this Nissan Leaf-powered 1977 car charges!
