    I love how all these videos are so realistic for the average guy. Working outside in the backyard with basic tools oppose to in a shop with hundreds of dollars of air tools and lifts. Keep the videos coming.

      Right? I bought NB for $3k and was looking at flying miata kits for $3.4k or ebay kits as low as $1.6k and well shit! That is about how much I paid for my car. I like the whole cheap out where you can, buy GOOD 2nd hand quality parts aspect, and when you can afford it you can easily replace.

    • @shadowkeeper0
      @shadowkeeper0 Před 7 lety +1

      I also agree, BUT don't make the mistake of lowering the importance of know-how and very good quality parts. I got an FM kit about 7 years ago, with a GT2554R. Nothing is broken...that turbo now has around 60 THOUSAND miles at 250 hp crank...the reliability is insane...no way you can get that with discount parts.

      +Cory Yalowicki You want to make sure to get the high temp stuff which is good for 500 degrees. The compressor side and the CHRA will not exceed that, and you won't use it on the turbine side since it will get waaay hotter than that.

    all of these miata videos have made me certian that i want one for my first car
    my plan is to get a 1.6 liter and vinyl wrap it a royal blue, raceland coil overs, at fist i want to get a full manzo exhaust system and then go turbo when i can, some sort of a "cold air" intake, 2 inch wheel spacers, and maybe some white plasti dipped diamond steelies or maybe some nice bbs rim but not to sure yet

    • @AidanMorris
      @AidanMorris Před 8 lety +3

      Just a couple suggestions... IMO, you should get different coil overs because race lands suck lol and instead of the spacer, get wider wheels, it'll make the car look SO mean plus a wider wheels is nicer. And I'm speaking from an owner of a 1993 Miata with 15x8 wheels on

    • @dalejackson5003

For wheels Advanti Storm S1's are gonna be going on mine after I finish piecing together my turbo build. For coilovers though you should consider Flyin Miata. They're a bit pricey but they give the car great feel in the corners.

  • @havoc010101
    @havoc010101 Před 8 lety

    How do you go about choosing the right turbo manifold? Off the top of my head, I would think that price point, construction, position, application and performance are some of the metrics that one would use when choosing one. What are your thoughts?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      The best way is to decide what your main use of the car is going to be. For most builds, a high quality cast manifold is the best option. They're usually around $400, they perform well, and they are BULLETproof. You can go with a tubular manifold for higher performance but they take up more space, are more expensive, and less durable.

  • @magnetic0314
    @magnetic0314 Před 7 lety +2

    I noticed you did not mention having the turbo re-balanced. While in theory if you mark the compressor and shaft, and reinstall carefully, it should be balanced, in theory this is not always true. Even if it is misaligned ever so slightly, this can throw the balance off

I spent a couple hours today trying to remove the snap ring to clock my compressor housing and I broke both of my snap ring pliers. This thing is so tight even after a bit of wd-40. I also destroyed some skin on my hand when the pliers slipped off and pinched it, so I’m taking a break for a bit haha. What snap ring pliers did you use for this video?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +Capt Fuzzy Plays If you're planning on daily driving and having it as your only car, I always recommend starting with Megasquirt. That's the major difference between this build, and the more "proper" way to do it. You'd have a faster, more reliable car if you have the right management.

    • @RevinKevin
      @RevinKevin Před 8 lety

      +TheCarPassionChannel allright cool! any other tips i should know about?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      Capt Fuzzy Plays Engine management is the heart of a reliable build really, make sure you have someone setup the safeguards in your ECU if you don't know how to do it, they can save your engine. I bought nearly everything for may car twice because I realized I needed better parts, etc. Go with 750cc injectors, they'll handle anything a stock engine can including E85. I bought 420cc, then realized I wanted more power so I had to upgrade. Bought a clutch that could hold 185wtq, started slipping so I had to upgrade. Bought a $350 china turbo, upgraded to a Garrett because again, I wanted more power. Always go for the better parts, it's worth it in the end!

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 2 lety

      Mike Mohr eBay, $45 (make sure you get the 360° thrust washer) and it's still going strong after 20,000 miles. I did not clean out the CHRA, didn't see any reason to.

      TheCarPassionChannel - kudos to you for interpreting my question correctly! "Where did you get it" could have referred to the turbo, but you correctly deduced that I was referring to the rebuild kit.

    Most used turbo for sale say slight shift play of noise. will this rebuild kit fix that?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety +1

      Even brand new turbos have slight shaft play, and what do you mean by "noise"? I have a recent video "How to Buy a used Turbocharger" that might help you out.

    what's your advice on driving a car with a blown turbo?? I have the chance to get a pretty clean 240 but it has a blown turbo and I can't tow it... car is 10 hours away from me...

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 7 lety +1

      It depends what's "blown". If the oil seals are bad you'll be burning a lot of oil

      +David monterroza Bell Engineering will modify the turbo however you want when you buy it from them, so I had a 3" inlet put on it.

    Two questions: How do you remove the wheels when the wheels won't come off the shaft? And I noticed you gave no time in the video to inspecting and measuring the shaft for wear. I understand the bushings are a brass alloy and are meant to take the abuse rather than the shaft, but I would think there would still a shaft inspection step. There most certainly are wear marks on your shaft in this vid. Nothing of consequence, I'm sure, but wear nonetheless.

    Alright so i know the turbo u have for project broke&boosted is a t25, i want to know what turbo u have on ur other miata? Great video by the way! Thanks in advance.

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety +1

      +FukYoCauch The exact turbo for Broke & Boosted is a Chinese "T25/T28 Hybrid" also known as a "T2854" In my opinion it's not the most ideal T25 sizing for the Miata, but it still works pretty well. The one I have on my other car is a Garrett GT2554R, which is the smallest ball bearing turbo Garrett makes. That, is an amazing turbo, and arguably the BEST version of the T25 for a 1.6L Miata. 1.8L's would be a little better suited with a GT2560R. Being the highest performing T25's you can get, they are also the most expensive at around $1000 new.

    Hey Greg, only this past week found your channel, great content, love the hands on side of your videos
    My question is, the turbo you rebuild in this video, was it the Chinese turbo? I'm considering buying one of the new units from Thailand, or is it a waste of time and stick with genuine?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +Wayne Clement Yes the turbo I rebuilt here is a Chinese turbo, it's the T25/T28 Begi sells (also Enjuku Racing as the "SR20 replacement turbo") for around $350. They seem to be consistently good quality, where the $180 ebay turbos seem to be good sometimes, and other times fall apart. I'd definitely recommend it, although it's not the fastest spooler!

      @wayneclement7201 Před 8 lety

      Thanks Greg, do you think one of the better built (Chinese/Thai) units would be more durable in a low boost application (Going by experience with this unit, I know you're gona say you're not an expert!) :D

    Is a turbo rebuild utterly necessary? I know its keeping on the safe side but are the chances high for them to konk out if not rebuilt?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 7 lety

      If your compressor wheel is hitting the compressor housing, yes it needs to be rebuilt before it eats itself. If it just has some play but no contact, then it doesn't really need it.

    would a t25 be good for a 1.8? Also what turbo do you recommend for a 1.8?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +Nicholas Kondylis Same. They are great turbos for both engines, it will just spool a little faster on a 1.8. If you have a 99+ 1.8L, I would recommend going with a larger sized T25, like a 2560R over a 2554R.

    can you take a china turbo and make it ball bearing? i heard that you can but idk how. can you explain how i could do that?

    • @TheCarPassionChannel
      @TheCarPassionChannel  Před 8 lety

      +Johnny Quinones The only way I've heard of people doing that is buying the ball bearing CHRA and swapping the China turbine housing and compressor housing onto it. The CHRA alone is usually $700+ so I think it's a better idea to just buy the complete ball bearing turbo.
