I love how all these videos are so realistic for the average guy. Working outside in the backyard with basic tools oppose to in a shop with hundreds of dollars of air tools and lifts. Keep the videos coming.
Right? I bought NB for $3k and was looking at flying miata kits for $3.4k or ebay kits as low as $1.6k and well shit! That is about how much I paid for my car. I like the whole cheap out where you can, buy GOOD 2nd hand quality parts aspect, and when you can afford it you can easily replace.
I also agree, BUT don't make the mistake of lowering the importance of know-how and very good quality parts. I got an FM kit about 7 years ago, with a GT2554R. Nothing is broken...that turbo now has around 60 THOUSAND miles at 250 hp crank...the reliability is insane...no way you can get that with discount parts.
i bet i coulda bought 16 ebay turbos for my integra for the price of the gt4554r 7 years ago
Yes using any old tools at hand

i watched this like a year ago and it was way above my head i love coming back to old videos like this and having it all make sense to me

Same here. Over the past couple of years I've learnt how to rebuilt a turbo once removed and diagnosed thanks to videos like this. 👍Before there was no way I was doing a job as scary as this but would do it without a second thought now.
Love these Miata videos man. I really appreciate the effort and time put into these videos. Totally changed my mind on Miata's. I now want to buy one and boost it as well!!
Love how in depth these are, you never miss a thing.
He missed something
Great videos man!
I'm in the middle of turbo'ing my 93
sadly I had to set the project aside for winter, Luckily you'll be way ahead of me by spring so I can watch all your videos right before I do my own :) obviously with alot of other research as well
Recently I've been watching your videos religiously in preparation for my own turbo Miata. Hahaha, thanks for the informative videos!
This is probably one of the most useful videos I've ever seen
I got my GodSpeed Ko4 turbo off of craigslist for 50$s then I got a rebuild off of eBay for 40 something dollars..
it's been almost 2yrs now and no problems at 22psi! but because I just mentioned it, my car is sure to blow up now.
+Audiwan Kenobi Perfect.
TheCarPassionChannel sure is!...minus the exploding car,right?...just checking.
Audiwan Kenobi Hahaha yes, that would not be good.
Did u ballance the turbo?? Or use the methode used in this video?? (Marking)
Oh god, my turbo just went out on me and I was freaking out on a rebuild. you don't know how happy I was seeing your channel name on the first video that popped up
Bro I have watched a lot of your videos and they are so helpful, thank you!!
congratulations on another great video. keep up the good work!☺
Great videos man! Keep doin what you do.
Thanks for the video! I’ve always wanted to rebuild an old turbo I have and now I know how to do it 👍
great videos love them so much, this is helping me be ready for my boosted Miata build :-)
Miata wars. Episode 5 the Miata strikes back
Awesome video man thank you! Can't wait to do the same
Nice vid easy to follow good info ! Nice job👍
I have A4 b7, and it's just starting to make a flutter sound on its own, without a whistle or bov!
Awesome video! I love the fact that you did it outside with basic tools, no fancy shop with air tools. I'll use this video as a guide to try to rebuild my truck's turbos. I have an 07 International 9400i with a Cat C-15, 1.3 million miles, my turbos work but look like they're about to crap themselves any minute. Is there any rust prevention to coat the turbos with?
Very nice video! Keep this good job!
great video, very in depth. I'm new to this channel so will definitely be subscribing and checking out your other vids
Thanks!
OK thank you very much !! keep those videos coming man!!:)
Very step by step. Excellent! ❤️
This is a cool video on how to rebuild your turbo, I think I have a T 25 laying around from a SR 20 DET. I think I will try to rebuild it using this video. Thanks !!
Check out my BoostVlogs video on my other channel about removing seized turbine housing bolts, that might help you as well. /watch?v=3B-Yw4syNCE
You, Sir, are a real hero!
LOL! my td04 broke. Just googled turbo rebuild and this came up! I guess i came full circle because you are of the reasons to turbo my mx-5 x)
love the videos bro, cant wait to get back in a na miata so i can boost it :)
Thank you for your tutorial video its a big help.
9:18 Never seen an allen key used like that before, thanks for the tip!
+Chandler Cowser All those years of working at a bicycle shop... :) Cheers
Another excellent vid... I will be doing the full timing belt / front seals / waterpump as per your video in a couple of weeks, and during next year make everything stronger and prep the car to turbo later in the year. I'm planning to use a TD04 turbo off an impreza, and want to learn more about wastegate actuators and aftermarket boost controllers....Basically how to set and control your boost (i plan to use a p+p ecu) but want to know how these things can be set physically, and what might work well... Kinda hoping you might be planning on covering this...
Keep up the excellent vids... Cheers, Ollie.
+ollydubhead Hmmm... how the various types of boost controllers work... sounds like a good idea to me.
Dude why don't you have more subs? Your videos are fantastic!
Fantastic video
That turbo housing is clean , compare to the one from my car. Thanks for the video! Can you make a video from a Volvo xc90- D5 - 136 KW, how to rebuild?
Hey man what would be the best quality rebuild kit or does it really matter?
best explanation videos👍
Good video. My t25 Emusa is smoking bad. Please advise.
Hey Greg! Where’d you get your snap ring pliers? I have bought 2 pairs now that are both too small.
thanks for give us this video
quick question : is the disassembling process the same (or similar) for all turbos ?
Do you think a turbo off of a r33 would be decent I've heard that some of them blow up cuz of the ceramic turbo blades
Thanks for the great video. So I can actually rebuild without taking the trouble to get the turbo rebalanced? I’ll do that trick where you marked a line on it. Nice one.
Did you have any issues getting your car smogged in California with the t25 turbo?I was trying to stick with the Greddy TD04H-15G kit since it has the carb sticker.
Would you recomend buying a turbo apart and assamble it at home?how do i balance it if so
isn't this turbo the bell engineering china charger? Would you recommend the bell engineering china charger or the enjuku t25? Keep up the videos Greg
is it ok to have a little play of compressor wheel inside
the housing ? or it shouldn’t move at all?
Would you recommend using a torque wrench or it's not really necessary?
Great video!
Just a note though, locktite is made to melt at temperature and therefore will do no good on a turbo.
+Cory Yalowicki You want to make sure to get the high temp stuff which is good for 500 degrees. The compressor side and the CHRA will not exceed that, and you won't use it on the turbine side since it will get waaay hotter than that.
Hey! So even though i marked my compressor wheel/nut/shaft together, i’ve managed to lose my markings, what to do now?
I've got a 1996 GQ patrol with2.8 liter diesel with a t28 on. I heard the first GU with the 2.8 litre turbo was downsized to a T25 as spools quicker. The turbo never been touched on my car I'm thinking maybe putting on a smaller turbo. Other words I think I have to rebuild this one cheers Graham
What do you think about the roller bearing upgrades they offer?
best to undo fan nut with a log extension socket bar and have a socket in vice for the exh side ,,,, so not risk bending shaft .in .the push down method shown ,,,also can fit carbon seal on intake side round alloy thing ,, so you can use with suck thru carburettor.. i have one on suzuki 1100 motorcycle
I rebuilt 3 turbos now and this is how I do it but the most important part is getting the correct parts cuz I rebuilt 2 with bearings fans and compressor shaft 10k km later no problem but 1 with only new bearing and rings but they were slightly wider and scrashed the housing and leaks way worse than it was
Beautiful
Subscribed !
Nice Video. Its getting better and better!Btw: Your House could use a little paint😉
+Fuelfoxx We're in the middle of doing some stucco repair!
+TheCarPassionChannel 👍
hi Craig . awesome video as always buddy!! I was just wondering if you could help me out I have a gt2871r turbo on my car and I need to buy a banjo bolt for my turbo. can you please recommend to me how many millimeters the hole should be on the banjo bolt so the car doesn't smoke from the exhaust? Thank you
Personally I run a 1mm restrictor on my Garrett GT turbos and I've had good luck.
Nice vidio. I like it
Can you please tell me where I can buy turbo charger kits for Hino 2016 , 268 model ?I need few turbo kits I'm really screwed I can't find it anywhere. Thanks good man
Thank you sir
man you need a tv show !!!
WOOOO FINALLY! bummer about the mic mistake in the middle, but a quality video as always!
+Sam Williams Yeah what happened was I dropped the external recorder at then end of the clip and didn't realize it corrupted the audio file until I was editing the video, so I used the camera audio.
Thats always a bummer. Still a good vid and awesome work. This car will be cool! Are you planning to just daily the B and B, and maybe go for even more power on the other car???
Sam Williams Actually, B&B will be for sale upon finishing. I plan to continue daily use of my main car.
Cool. Well good luck with the rest of the build. whoever gets the car will be a lucky guy!
Thanks save a lot of money
Is t25 turbocharger compatible with Detroit Diesel turbo ? Thanks
Nice!!!
all of these miata videos have made me certian that i want one for my first car
my plan is to get a 1.6 liter and vinyl wrap it a royal blue, raceland coil overs, at fist i want to get a full manzo exhaust system and then go turbo when i can, some sort of a "cold air" intake, 2 inch wheel spacers, and maybe some white plasti dipped diamond steelies or maybe some nice bbs rim but not to sure yet
Just a couple suggestions... IMO, you should get different coil overs because race lands suck lol and instead of the spacer, get wider wheels, it'll make the car look SO mean plus a wider wheels is nicer. And I'm speaking from an owner of a 1993 Miata with 15x8 wheels on
oh ok yea ik race lands are crappy i might go with some thing a little nicer with maybe some camber adjustability
+Dale Jackson I've got a Manzo exhaust on my car, it's a bit loud for daily driving but I don't mind it. For wheels Advanti Storm S1's are gonna be going on mine after I finish piecing together my turbo build. For coilovers though you should consider Flyin Miata. They're a bit pricey but they give the car great feel in the corners.
Does anyone have a link to a T25 turbo. I can't find one. Thanks
How do you go about choosing the right turbo manifold? Off the top of my head, I would think that price point, construction, position, application and performance are some of the metrics that one would use when choosing one. What are your thoughts?
The best way is to decide what your main use of the car is going to be. For most builds, a high quality cast manifold is the best option. They're usually around $400, they perform well, and they are BULLETproof. You can go with a tubular manifold for higher performance but they take up more space, are more expensive, and less durable.
I noticed you did not mention having the turbo re-balanced. While in theory if you mark the compressor and shaft, and reinstall carefully, it should be balanced, in theory this is not always true. Even if it is misaligned ever so slightly, this can throw the balance off
never seen anyone turn an allen key the way you just did lmao
Hey Greg , I have a 99 miata and I'm starting the process of piecing a kit together . Do you think a sr20det T25 would be a good turbo for a miata ?
It's basically the best budget turbo you can put on a Miata engine.
TheCarPassionChannel, Idk if you still read the comments on these old videos, but I’ve got the same t25 from enjuku for my 94 miata. I spent a couple hours today trying to remove the snap ring to clock my compressor housing and I broke both of my snap ring pliers. This thing is so tight even after a bit of wd-40. I also destroyed some skin on my hand when the pliers slipped off and pinched it, so I’m taking a break for a bit haha. What snap ring pliers did you use for this video?
Coady Lewis The snapring is brutal on these turbos... I had to use beefy snapring pliers on mine, and good technique.
9:19 love how you work that alan key ;)
+PVznPie Haha that used to save me a lot of time when I worked in bicycle shops
Did you ever do turbo rebuilds for bicycles? hahaha
PVznPie LOL I can't say that I have.
I'd like some advice, Do you think you could help me? I'll pm you my question.
Awesome video! Purchased a T25 Garrett Turbo today for cheap. One random question I had, how are you deleting the AFM since Broke and Boosted will be using a stock ECU? Just curious, keep up the great vids.
+VTCar.Club I will not be deleting the AFM.
that's easy enough!
Hey man, know this is an old video, but im hoping you can answer a question for me, on the exhaust side it looks like a piece of pipe has been cut and welded to separate the chamber between exhaust and wastegate. Was this to prevent turbulence and pressure build up? Cheers! Really enjoying you videos, they are a great help for my current turbo project!
Yeah, I don't really like the design honestly, I had a lot of cracking issues with the Begi downpipe
Awwww yeaahhh! :)
I don't even have a Miata yet and I've been watching this whole series lol. Hopefully will have one within a month though
+Real Talk Sweet!
+TheCarPassionChannel thanks for making these videos, you make everything so clear and easy to follow
Good video man, unfortunately you forgot to line up the oil seals correctly. 😟
💚💚💚💚 bookmark/ notes : compression wheel 🍦🧁ball of paper / shredder 🚁 …..ect…..tbc…..-g-b, bot
Will this stop the oil leak
What caused the shaft play before rebuild? Were the journal bearings scored/damaged?
+arcticgod619 The inside of the old journal bearings was just worn ever so slightly. The tolerances are so tight, even a fraction of a mm of wear will be noticeable when you check for play.
link to the rebuild kit please
its awesome to see this build coming together! im getting a miata some time within the next 2 years and definetly plan on turboing on a budget. do you know if a turbo/turbo setup like this would be reliable to dailydrive for a couple years?
+Capt Fuzzy Plays If you're planning on daily driving and having it as your only car, I always recommend starting with Megasquirt. That's the major difference between this build, and the more "proper" way to do it. You'd have a faster, more reliable car if you have the right management.
+TheCarPassionChannel allright cool! any other tips i should know about?
Capt Fuzzy Plays Engine management is the heart of a reliable build really, make sure you have someone setup the safeguards in your ECU if you don't know how to do it, they can save your engine. I bought nearly everything for may car twice because I realized I needed better parts, etc. Go with 750cc injectors, they'll handle anything a stock engine can including E85. I bought 420cc, then realized I wanted more power so I had to upgrade. Bought a clutch that could hold 185wtq, started slipping so I had to upgrade. Bought a $350 china turbo, upgraded to a Garrett because again, I wanted more power. Always go for the better parts, it's worth it in the end!
+TheCarPassionChannel thanks a ton dude!
How do you rebuild it to make more boost? Just curious, my turbo is almost through the door and the one that comes with the vw stage 2 kit says they used same housing but its $1800!!!
The only way to make more power from a turbo that's already maxed out is by getting a larger compressor side. And that's assuming the exhaust isn't fully choked already
So ebay turbos are great?
I know this is an old post, but I am rebuilding a T25 SR20DET that I found. Three questions. 1. Where did you get it? 2. How long did your rebuild kit last? 3. How did you clean your CHRA?
Mike Mohr eBay, $45 (make sure you get the 360° thrust washer) and it's still going strong after 20,000 miles. I did not clean out the CHRA, didn't see any reason to.
TheCarPassionChannel - kudos to you for interpreting my question correctly! "Where did you get it" could have referred to the turbo, but you correctly deduced that I was referring to the rebuild kit.
Most used turbo for sale say slight shift play of noise. will this rebuild kit fix that?
Even brand new turbos have slight shaft play, and what do you mean by "noise"? I have a recent video "How to Buy a used Turbocharger" that might help you out.
what's your advice on driving a car with a blown turbo?? I have the chance to get a pretty clean 240 but it has a blown turbo and I can't tow it... car is 10 hours away from me...
It depends what's "blown". If the oil seals are bad you'll be burning a lot of oil
🔥🔥🔥🔥
Is it a GT25 turbo or just a t25?
when i try to find a t25 turbo, the results come up as a gtx2860r with a t25 inlet, is this what im looking for??
Exploit Films no. Its a 2554 your looking for
where did you get the cool compressor housing?
+David monterroza Bell Engineering will modify the turbo however you want when you buy it from them, so I had a 3" inlet put on it.
Two questions: How do you remove the wheels when the wheels won't come off the shaft? And I noticed you gave no time in the video to inspecting and measuring the shaft for wear. I understand the bushings are a brass alloy and are meant to take the abuse rather than the shaft, but I would think there would still a shaft inspection step. There most certainly are wear marks on your shaft in this vid. Nothing of consequence, I'm sure, but wear nonetheless.
I don't even have a miata but I love your videos haha
+austin SOLO Good to hear! A lot of the work and techniques I do in my videos can be applied to other cars and other mechanical things in general. I got a lot of my wrenching skill from working as a bicycle mechanic for 6 years!
+TheCarPassionChannel that definitely helps man! I'd like to get a na miata eventually as as daily while I build my forester haha but I feel like I'm too big for them
Alright so i know the turbo u have for project broke&boosted is a t25, i want to know what turbo u have on ur other miata? Great video by the way! Thanks in advance.
+FukYoCauch The exact turbo for Broke & Boosted is a Chinese "T25/T28 Hybrid" also known as a "T2854" In my opinion it's not the most ideal T25 sizing for the Miata, but it still works pretty well. The one I have on my other car is a Garrett GT2554R, which is the smallest ball bearing turbo Garrett makes. That, is an amazing turbo, and arguably the BEST version of the T25 for a 1.6L Miata. 1.8L's would be a little better suited with a GT2560R. Being the highest performing T25's you can get, they are also the most expensive at around $1000 new.
Hey Greg, only this past week found your channel, great content, love the hands on side of your videos
My question is, the turbo you rebuild in this video, was it the Chinese turbo? I'm considering buying one of the new units from Thailand, or is it a waste of time and stick with genuine?
+Wayne Clement Yes the turbo I rebuilt here is a Chinese turbo, it's the T25/T28 Begi sells (also Enjuku Racing as the "SR20 replacement turbo") for around $350. They seem to be consistently good quality, where the $180 ebay turbos seem to be good sometimes, and other times fall apart. I'd definitely recommend it, although it's not the fastest spooler!
Thanks Greg, do you think one of the better built (Chinese/Thai) units would be more durable in a low boost application (Going by experience with this unit, I know you're gona say you're not an expert!) :D
Wayne Clement Heck, this thing held up for nearly 30,000 miles on 14psi
What was wrong with the turbo as everything looked fine on dismantle?
The compressor wheel was contacting the housing
That bronze "washer" isn't a washer. It's the Thrust Bearing
Is a turbo rebuild utterly necessary? I know its keeping on the safe side but are the chances high for them to konk out if not rebuilt?
If your compressor wheel is hitting the compressor housing, yes it needs to be rebuilt before it eats itself. If it just has some play but no contact, then it doesn't really need it.
wait so If i have a gt2545r and it has ball bearings how different is rebuild than from this journalbearing chincharger? doing a rebuild on it soon
Cosby Quiroga Quite different
Cosby Quiroga much more difficult
would a t25 be good for a 1.8? Also what turbo do you recommend for a 1.8?
+Nicholas Kondylis Same. They are great turbos for both engines, it will just spool a little faster on a 1.8. If you have a 99+ 1.8L, I would recommend going with a larger sized T25, like a 2560R over a 2554R.
Is there a difference between the ISIS t25 and the ones sold on eBay for half the price?
+yossi126 Good question! I have no idea.
can you take a china turbo and make it ball bearing? i heard that you can but idk how. can you explain how i could do that?
+Johnny Quinones The only way I've heard of people doing that is buying the ball bearing CHRA and swapping the China turbine housing and compressor housing onto it. The CHRA alone is usually $700+ so I think it's a better idea to just buy the complete ball bearing turbo.
Thanks for the help. Trying to make some power out of my 1.6. Im thinkimg of doing a 1.8 swap but idk might just turbo it
