    If you're interested in uniform stories - at the 1961 Carolina-Clemson game, some South Carolina fraternity members borrowed the orange jerseys of a high school team, impersonated the Clemson Tigers and ran out on the field for pre-game warm ups at Williams-Brice Stadium, almost causing a riot.

    We had another strange Georgia Jersey controversy at Williams-Brice when I was an equipment manager there in 1993-1995. I was assigned to the visitors locker room as a courtesy runner in case the visiting team needed anything. I witnessed a guy walk up and take Mike Bobo's Jersey at halftime. I figured maybe it had torn and needed repair or possibly he needed a fresh dry one. Someone asked me about it and I described the guy and they said that he didn't work for the team and it would seem that someone had just wandered into the locker room and taken that jersey as a piece of sports memorabilia. Later that year, we would go to the Carquest bowl and the same guy showed up in our locker room without the proper sideline pass. The police promptly had him arrested for trespass. I often wondered if they uncovered some type of illegal memorabilia ring.

    Why didn't somebody tell Holtz he could wear white as the home team? SEC rules permit the home team to wear white without permission of the visiting team in conference games. It would not have been that hard to tell Georgia to bring its red jerseys, especially since the Bulldogs were traveling by bus and not plane.

      I'm guessing it was just too late for Georgia to switch. That, or maybe they did ask Georgia to switch and Georgia refused. Because if they had a choice, of course they want to be the ones wearing white

    • @encycl07pedia-
      @encycl07pedia- Před 2 lety +2

      What you have to remember is that traditionally in football, the home team wears the team color jerseys and the opponents wear white. It wasn't until the last 10-20 years or so that teams actually chose to wear white jerseys at home, with some notable exceptions like LSU preferring white jerseys at home.
      I'm not sure if that was in the conference or NCAA rulebook at the time, either.

    I was at that game in the student section. It was stuff of legends. The students tore down the goalposts and marched one of them 2.5 miles from the stadium all the way to 5 Points which is an area with a bunch of college bars. They cut up the goalposts and pieces of it are still displayed proudly in some of those bars to this day.

  • @Ianmccor
    @Ianmccor Před 2 lety +8

    I went to that game against New Mexico State the week before. As for how big a win that was, the fans tore down the goalposts for beating a team that is barely able to stay in FBS today.
    With that said, the actual craziest uniform controversy in South Carolina history was in 2012 against Auburn, where the team was going to wear special Under Armour "Wounded Warrior" jerseys for charity auction to benefit injured veterans. The problem was that the camo pattern on the numbers was too difficult to read so the team was ordered to switch back into their regular jerseys when in the locker room prior to kickoff. The final result was a loss to an Auburn team coming off Cam Newton leaving for the NFL and ended up being the final game for quarterback Stephen Garcia who got drunk after the game after having been given a zero tolerance policy by AD Eric Hyman.

    8:17 - on the color of the jerseys: up until about 10-15 years ago, it was difficult to replicate the garnet for SC’s jerseys. Even Under Armour, the official supplier for the school’s athletic program, had trouble with the color initially. I’m thinking it might be a combination of the material and sweat that caused the garnet to look like a completely different shade of red.

    I doubt that Georgia has ever wore all-whites before. And even if it was the case, it would be very rare, mostly on the road. I'm reminded of a rumor I once heard involving uniforms. It was a Monday night game between the Cowboys and Packers. Supposedly the Packers equipment manager sent their white uniforms to Texas Stadium (that tells you how long ago this was.) They were going to FedEx the green uniforms but the equipment manager didn't know the zip code for Green Bay, WI. Either this got resolved or was a bad rumor because the Packers had on the right uniforms. Flash forward and the Broncos were fined for sending white uniforms when the Chargers declared their uniform choice as their white uniforms.
