- The Dell XPS 17 9700 might be one of the best laptops available right now in 2021 when it comes to battery life, performance, size, weight and the keyboard. Plus the XPS 17 with the RTX 2060 is meant for production and gaming in a big way. But with a high price even with Dell sales, after more than three months of constant use for work, editing, gaming and more, how does it stand up for battery life, performance, keyboard and price? The user review after 3 months is here.

Definitely should do these long term reviews on more of the tech you feel like would benefit from it.
I know right!
Thanks so much for sharing as as up and coming content creator this review was so helpful . I was looking at the XPS 15 . Now I’m looking into getting the XPS 17.
As I am still editing videos off my Sony Vaio from 2009. Which has served me well with upgraded ram and ssd . But I want to use my 4K camera to its full potential with 4K content.
Loving the long term reviews, look forward to see more!
The screen looks so good!
I also think so. I would get an XPS if they ever went for Ryzen... Not willing to the intel tax for less performance... If not. I might get a Legion when ryzen is available on the 7 or 7 slim.
Bruhh, how does ur logo look similar our hardware Canucks
@@rohit2405_ he had this logo even before Hardware Canucks changed their logo from a canuck to this.
That’s the only reason why I still buy 60hz displays on laptop. I photo edit a lot these days. More than I game. I’m excited to see how the 165 hz with 100 dcip3 does in your testing Jarrod
No heartಠ ͜ʖ ಠ
Nice honest review. Great job and certainly one of the best reviews I've seen. I'll be watching more. I have the XPS 17 and it does a great job for everything that I need it to do. I really wanted to wait for the 10nm 11th generation version because I felt like it would bring better battery life and might run a little cooler.. I personally am happy with the power of the 10th gen when editing photos but it can definitely drain the battery if you stay unplugged. But on the positive side, the battery is considerably better than my 3 year old XPS 15 - 9560. Much, much better.
On carbon fiber-like material: I used my XPS 15 (9560) for 3 years now and I do use moisturizers - no issues. Just clean it once in a while and you will be golden.
I've had an xps 15 now for 3 years. The carbon fiber holds up great, no visible wear.
And it is not overheating like some people are experiencing?
What a good , personal review. I must subscribe. As per the Dell 17. The display looks wonderful. For photo / video and content creators it seems like it would really shine. Those color profile choices Dell gives you on the 17 inch is so cool. Def great for photographers / videographers. Good review.
Wow your production, lighting, vocals, and backdrop are beautiful. Very inspiring space.
Agree - incredibly well done video
FYI, Dell hasn't addressed the trackpad issue AT ALL. Their new XPS line up (15 and 17) still have that issue, a simple search on Reddit/CZcams will prove that.
It's the fact Dell sends to reviewers perfectly working machines because they get tested more, unlike what the regular customer will receive.
Not saying every laptop will have that issue, but beware.
Also the hissing sound in the speaker. And apparently it's a problem that affected xps from the beginning of time. It blows my mind that there is not one rewier that knows about this problem
@@nohandlehere55 I had to use the touch screen a lot of times
Slick production and a well composed video! subbed!
I really appreciate all of your content!! I have the Dell XPS 17 with the 4k touch screen and how you mentioned that dell Premier Color is an excellent tool, I agree but there is a horrible color banding issue in dark images caused by dell premier color that caused me to uninstall the program and install intel graphics command center in its place. I would really love to hear your input on this subject and if you have experienced this issue? Thank you very much in advance!!
Well done mate, good review. I ragged on you before but this is a job well done, keep it up!
Dude I love your reviews, keep going!
Re one of your main drawbacks, I wonder if placing it on a cooling pad of some kind (base with a fan) would prevent this throttling?
This guy is the best! I have watched countless review of Mac Book Pros, and never once has anyone mentioned REC 709. Funny thing, being MACs are all about artists and content creators. This guy does a deep dive into color. Fantastic! As well as talking about build quality!
Is it actually possible to use the Thunderbolt-Ports? Since it was never possible to use them on the XPS 15 9560...
there he goes again: "spend responsibly," while showing off a $2700 laptop.
great review, though!
Yeah I just googled its price in our country that's 3237$
@@mrrohitjadhav470 it's a trash laptop.
The worst part - windows
The second worst - intel
third worst - RTX 2060 at that price
Fourth worst - throttles every goddamn time
simple evergreen guide :-
gaming : build a P.C. (upgradable)
office excel : MacBook air m1
coding : wait for 16" Macbook pro m1
As far as that display praise is concerned, any MacBook pro will put this laptop to shame. Plus, most people spending 3,000 USD get an external display anyways
I'm not even an Apole fanboy but that company did wonders with silicon.
@@omshree901 bruh if you don't like windows just install macOSX(opencore I think it called) or a linux distro, android folks, freebsd and goood luck getting a good Dgpu, also no coder/programmer wants a laptop that's locked down

Never comment, but must say your video presentation, graphics and lightjg use is spot on (laptop review great). Your background has horizontal tube lights, consider vertical accent lines narrow, same color, keep the orange spherical lighting and do som hidden faint lighting under the shelves. Will make a 9.5 presentation a 10. Great job and have a sucriber. Thanks.
As of December, Dell had NOT fixed the trackpad issue on the XPS 15. I had to return MULTIPLE laptops because of QC issues with the trackpad and the hinge.
Would love to see a laptop similar to this with a Ryzen 5900 amd RTX2060 or 2070
I was considering this laptop, together with the MSI Creator 17 and its HDR1000 dispaly. I ended up buying the MSI, but it's incredible how little justice it got compared to the XPS or MacBooks. It definitely deserve more. If you got amazed by the XPS display, try to look at the Creator 17
@Juri V The display is stil incredible. But the PC itself it's not. I should have waited for the M1 Macs. First of all, it's really HOT. The cooling barely manages to keep temps under 100°C in "heavy" use like video exporting. It's a Creator laptop, if it's problematic to export videos, what is its point? Sometimes it just shut itself off due to extreme temperatures! The build quality is poor, compared to other 3000 €+ premium laptops. The integrated Intel GPU can't properly drive the 4K HDR display, resulting in a sluggish Windows interface (you have to disable it and use only the dedicated GPU). The integrated audio is terrible, worse than any premium smartphone. Forget using it on battery. I have the 2020 model, the first one, and I hope that the 2021-2022 revisions fixed all these problems
beautiful back pack. what brand is it? thanks for a well informed video
I got the xps 15 in December 2020. Replaced it 3 times for the wobbly trackpad and 1 time for the speakers not working. I dont think they have applied the touchpad fix to all countries, as I live in Australia.
Thank you for the review! I have a question related to the touchpad, how is its sensitivity? Im planning on buying the 15" version and Im a little worried that the touchpad isn´t as good as the ones made by Apple. I use the touchpad a lot, almost for everything! :S
Thanks for the great review. I was wondering why your XPS looked like a dark/black color on the lid and then at the end, you mentioned having a skin on it. I would have loved to hear your thoughts on how well the skin holds up, especially the corners/edges.
I really, really wish dell would replace the base FHD+ display on the XPS 17 with a 2560X1600 unit. That would be amazing and on a computer this expensive, I don't really see an issue dropping the base model to make it better equipped.
Useful info.
The answer to the USB-C paradox: A USB-C dock.
@Hardwarecanucks you didn't mention HDR at all, how has your experience been?
I have an issue with dynamic contrast when HDR is enabled. (Won't disable at all no matter what settings I change)
I have one too, and I'm now hooked on the 16:10 aspect ratio!
Did u consider waiting for 11th gen? When did u buy it. 11th coming soon.
@@nateportney672 I am going ahead and getting one . Not new but open box and it’s way cheaper than the new one .
@@r.j.macready5410 I swear I had the same issue . Honestly I tested 3-4 xps and none of them had this issue . Probably people who have problems complain and people who don’t , they don’t come on Reddit and say good things . I finally bought and I swear I have never been this happy . Was thinking to get m17 r3 but thank god I got this one . Great battery , crazy screen and performance . If you can check before hand then get one seriously .
Amazing review and the quality is awesome! 👌
How is the xps 17 holding up? Would love to see an update.
Using XPS 15 9500 for over 10 months... really happy so far... carbon fiber holds up well.
The XPS 17 is on my list to purchase I also appreciate the screen real estate for my work and I was wondering if the laptop would fit my 30L travel bag. I'm really glad to see how the XPS 17 fits the 20L Peak Design bag that has helped answer the major question "Will it fit my travel bag?". This review helped on my decision to purchase this laptop. Thank you all at Hardware Canucks!
Thank you for review in this model. Thank
Love you for reviewing one of my fav laptops
Does using the Dell Color make your display have extreme color banding? I'm having that issue so i had to uninstall it...
Thank you, do you recommend it for games?
Did you experience battery drain issue during heavy loads while plugged in? Mine did that at first but the last few update seemed to have resolved that.
Thinking of this model for ML and coding, do you think it would be one of the top choices for 2021 Oct? There are a few other good choices like the Legion 7, was looking at the new MacBooks but the M1 chip is a drama for machine learning with python.
Great review, very useful! Thanks. Might you answer a question: Will the 17" FHD+ non-touch screen still have a decent quality picture if I go that route instead of the UHD+4k touch screen? I'm torn about which to get. I do use it mobile, but most of the time it's at my home office where I can plug it in except for the occasional time I decide to work or watch a movie elsewhere around the house. I am online long hours 5-7 days a week, but do no gaming and no video editing, just lots of streaming and web searching. It's now Dec 2021, I am looking at the XPS 17" 9710 with the 11th gen i7 chip, 16GB RAM, 512GB SSD storage, the 3050 graphics and Windows 11. Just can't decide on which screen to get. The UHD+ is supposed to have some anti-reflective treatment to it, including something about blue light, but it's still gloss, while the FHD+ matte screen is supposed to be easier on eye strain and better battery life. The extra $150/$200 for the UHD+ doesn't matter to me, I just don't want a poor quality picture, and am especially concerned that at the larger 17" size the FHD+ will be noticeably poor. Care to take a shot at answering my question above and providing any further insight? Thanks either way. Thumbs up to your video review!
The screen size is so good!
Listening his Voice, feel like listening Lisa Su's voice
He has a great, calm voice actually. Doesn’t talk too fast like some!
how do you feel about the 4 USB C ports?
Love it, but my fingerprint scanner/power button is no longer working. It became disabled (it seems) after an update. Do you know of a fix? Thanks in advance.
Could the battery issue actually be a feature to reduce battery degradation?
Great video ♥️
About the battery/charging thing: on my xps13 2in1 I can change how it uses power/charges the battery, there is a Dell Power Manager app for it. Maybe just configure that a little
The 15 and 17, esp. the 17 with the bigger display, uses so much more power that I have HEARD, I cannot confirm, that the included power adapter cannot fully power the device. If the CPU and GPU are both under full load, the battery will drain even if it is plugged in. Hence Dell's throttling when below 50% battery.
I don't own any of the new XPS laptops, cannot confirm the above, but that is a thing I heard on other techtuber's channels.
I’m just wondering if this is purely from windows users’ perspective? How would this laptop stack against the apple M1 laptops for content creators? Very nice review regardless, thanks very much
I turned off Premium Color on my XPS 17 last year. It had issues interacting with the Intel color management system, causing blacks to be crushed. Have you observed that?
Yes, color banding was awful... Ever since then I don’t trust the 4K screen on it, only work on it docked.
Hello, do you think I should buy the Asus ROG Zephyrus G15 or Asus ROG Strix Scar 15 (If they are both same price, AMD Ryzen 5800 CPU, 16gb RAM, QHD, RTX 3070 etc.)? If Zephyrus, should I buy the RTX 3060 variant if it is £300 cheaper? I appreciate any responses
can you compare the xps and precision lineups?
My ideal display is 3:2, 90HZ mini-led with HDR. 16:10 is fine enough, but I've found 3:2 to just be better for basically everything except watching movies or playing games (which I don't do much of on my laptop).
Is it still mandatory to have a working battery to update the bios? I ran into this problem when I tried to update an old dell xps 15.
The 2021 edition of the XPS 17 BEGS for Ryzen 5000 series & Nvidia 3000. Imagine the improved performance AND battery life!
Fan noise and heat dissipated? Can more elaborations be provided?
what's your creator/gaming recommendation? going through your vides to try and discern.... the legion 5 pro?
So happy i came across your review!! I just purchased this... yet i do not have it in my hands yet...so i wanted to see what the heck i just bought as the store didn't have it on site. Even though i have no idea of most of what you said haha, i got the message this is great & will help me get back to making videos for my daughter Kelli (killed by DUI Homicide...zero justice) in hopes of continuing to save lives & get a much needed law passed in my state! Am i hearing you correctly... there are no USB ports?!! Whaaaat?!!! They didnt mention THAT at the store. Thats going to be interesting for me. Yikes!! Pam
Could you please comment on issues with the Killer Wifi on xps 17?
I'll give my review.
The XPS 17 appears to be a great machine but Dell has serious quality control Engineering issues and it's very common for owners to get motherboards replaced with refurbished ones only weeks or a few months after purchase.
There service division gives people the run around first changing heat sinks and cheap parts before opting to change out the board only to have the issues persist.
People are spending 3000 4000 dollars on the higher end models of it to basically get a computer Dell refuses to replace or properly fix and which has made it unusable for many people for months.
If you have an issue more then 30 days after Purchase you are stuck with what ever service requests and fixes they arbitrarily decide to pursue all the while spending hours and hours dealing with them service tecks and not having use of the machine.
These are not isolated incidents be careful about some of the CZcams reviews many are just sponsored commercials.
my XPS 9310 2-in-1 has had 3 motherboards swapped by dell. . Still Dell will not replace. Fingers crossed it will be stable now
Thanks, What do you think LG gram 17 inch (2021) VS Dell XPS 17 ?
I have coil whine on mine dell xps 17 when I edit on premiere pro. Its just a small light buzzing but it can get annoying. Beside that it's a great laptop.
What laptop can power the KX77s? I thought that needs a proper amp to power?
Man, your voice is relaxing...
Where do I get the wallpaper of the yellow car in the dessert of your video cover?
The problem with Dell Premier colour is that it actually ruins the displays ability to display gradients. I'm surprised you didn't notice this working on colour critical content. With HDR disabled even youtube videos display excessive amounts of banding on backgrounds that should be smooth gradients. Resetting colours via the intel colour management tool instantly fixes this so that gradients display smoothly again. But the second you adjust the colours again in Premier colour the gradients go haywire again.
I just ordered the xps 17 9700 with 32gb ram, 4k display. Are you still using this, have you encountered any major problems since thus review?
Hi!, I own an Epic W 8K. Do you think I can edit 8K footage with this laptop? Thanks for your help!

How does the screen compare to the Aero 17 4K HDR?
With enormous keyboard space, I don’t understand why Dell still make these tiny arrow keys, and share Home/End keys with function keys. These keys are vital in coding and document editing, but Dell’s keyboard design obviously makes typing a bit more difficult. Guess I’d have to wait till the next gen if they come up with a more functional keyboard
As someone who bought this laptop at launch, I gotta say the review is spot on!
Only thing I want to add is that the launch was a mess, luckily most of the issues are gone. But my fourth laptop they sent me had it's graphics card crash. And when I had an on site repair a few months ago (prosupport) the repair person didn't plug in the speaker connector for one side. They also buried the connector under the motherboard so the entire laptop has to come apart to fix this.
Basically, Dells customer support and quality control has lots of issues, but the laptop is incredible
Fair review, as always, fellow Canucker, fellow XPS'r!
I got last year's XPS 17 as a client for work-related video conferencing and other work activities since I am required to keep work items on a separate computer from all home activities. I got it with the 1650 graphics since I wasn't expecting to do a lot of content creation on it. After getting it my employer went down the tubes and ended my contract early. But it was a solid workhorse for the business activities I was doing. The trackpad is OK, but I have a Microsoft mouse and dual monitors plugged into a Dell D3100 Dock that is connected to the laptop so actual trackpad use has been minimal for me during the pandemic. It's functioning as a mid-level desktop. . some reviews have been critical of the XPS 13 because it can require up to 180 watts on a full load for GPU and CPU and having a power brick that's only 130. Some reviewers are expecting a 180 or even a 200-watt power brick. This may also explain some of the battery and recharge choices that Dell has instituted.
Do you not face any issues with the Dell Premier Color application? For me, it messes my entire screen and I keep noticing color banding
Same, had to uninstall it...
Which one should I keep Aorus 15g 3080 or asus strix 17 3070?
Love the jacket !!!!!
@Hardware Canucks why wouldn't your mouse work with a USB-A to a USB-C dongle?
I have one for few months, I encountered many problems with touchpad and fans and fingerprint. It also sometime freeze with black screen.
Bought the XPS 15 9500 and Dell sent me two of them brand new out of the factory broken. I had the wobbly track pad and one usb-c port that wasn't functioning. The second one had a damaged hinge on the screen brand new from the factory.
The tech support was phenomenal. But the quality control from the factory was the worst I've ever seen using computers since 1983.
If the quality control was good the machine actually worked very nicely!
Returned both machines and got my money ($3000) back.
Nice review 👌👌👍
Been loving my XPS 17 for about 8 months now. Best laptop I have used to date.
The xps17 replaced pretty much all my laptops. This is probably the best laptop I’ve ever owned. The screen and having a 2060, it’s great. I have a tb external enclosure and 3090 I plug it or as well when at my desk.
Glossy screens need like a full windex wipe a week for me cause thin bezels meant I touch the screen every time I open the laptop.
May I ask where you got the skin? Thanks!
Man the lighting in your videos is friking incredible, great job
Intel has already presented 11th gen CPU, are there any predictions when Dell will announce a new XPS series in 2021?
3 or 4 quarter something like that?
Is it a 2 in 1 laptop? I'm considering between this and the Inspiron 17 7000. They are very similar but the Inspiron is 2 in 1.
Watching this on my XPS 15 9550. Still an incredible laptop (despite the battery and thermals).
Great review. One thing that's constantly missing in 17 inch laptop reviews is; How does it feel in your lap? On the couch? In bed on your stomach? Is it awkward or surprisingly ok?
I have it. If you put it anywhere aside from a desk it blocks the fan exhaust holes and it gets HOT. Its a powerful machine but is not a “lap”top. Your tummy will hurt
I didn’t find any drainage issues from the battery like most reviewers said and I played for hours top tier games.
hello, i am trying to find the right laptop for a long time.. no gaming, no video editing, no autocad or render work.. i will only use laptop for financial trading stock programs that need high CPU, SSD and ram. and laptop will be used from 09:00 am to 11 pm // all day nearly of course not will battery, always plugded in. i read some coil whine problems abaout this model.. can you advice this model for me ? heating /cooling issued and stable performance? thank you
nice video bro
I was looking at new xps 17 but thought the new alienware m17 R4 as it has better cooling and graphics card?
I got the precise config you did, even though I have no need for it. I have had multiple issues. Even with my moderate workflow, I have had terrible heating issues, and had to have Dell replace the motherboard, fans, heat sink at least once. I naively bought it so that I’d have a desktop replacement for a couple of years, but have in the interim bought an M1 Mac so that I have something I can use portably without setting fire to myself. Oh well. Mileages vary.
I was considering getting this for my programming workflow, but I bought the base model M1 air 4 months ago and have not looked back.
I own a Precision - I have similar power irks when powered through the USB/Thunderbolt ports.
I like this guys video demeanor. He looks like the guy from RichRebuilds, GREAT VIDEO!!
