You advised me not to get one of these back in the day (which was fair enough as MG was an unknown) but the features, price and warranty drew me in. I'm really happy with it so far. There is a BMS update to allow charging on type 2 while the doors are unlocked. It was by design for some reason when it launched but MG took feedback and have been pumping out software updates. They've got rid of the annoying bongs as well with the comfort 2 update. So impressed with post purchase support as well.
Sounds like u made a gr8 Choice, I'm hoping to get this car aswell if God wills, mate how is the acceleration compare it to any car which one would u say. Merc 220 diesel..?
You prolly dont give a damn but does any of you know of a tool to get back into an instagram account?
I was stupid forgot the login password. I would appreciate any assistance you can give me
@Holden Saul instablaster ;)
@Damon Anders thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and im waiting for the hacking stuff atm.
I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later with my results.
@Damon Anders It worked and I now got access to my account again. I am so happy!
Thank you so much, you really help me out!
You walked around the car, and the video ended abruptly.
I thought I was going to see you on the far side. đ
I can confirm that after the BMS update the car will charge on type 2 unlocked. It doesnât have a heat pump. Itâs just a heating element and a fan.
It always rapid charged unlocked. I got an Ohme cable that charges the car on octopus go/agile overnight.
Iâve had this car for a year next month. I paid ÂŁ24k, Iâd hate to pay ÂŁ28k for the same car now!
ZS EV owner here! You can change to KM from mph in the settings on the infotainment screen, think it is called Units. I did this when I was in Ireland with the car over Christmas. The car doesn't have any charge timers, The car was originally set up so that you had to lock the car before charging on AC (DC can charge locked or unlocked). To enable the AC charging while unlocked, you need the dealer to update the EVCC and BMS to the latest versions (sadly we can't do it ourselves). Although the car has no internal alarm sensors, so you can lock the door from the inside and sit in while you charge on AC if you want!! No Heat Pump in the ZS sadly, and no app, though one is being developed using OVMS, it can read the info at the moment, but youcan't set anything. (I also had a Seat Leon before the ZS! Though it was a 2015 one!) Overall I think the ZS is a great car for the money and I hope you enjoy your year with it. My only real criticism is the range could be better.
Thanks for the info Alan, Iâll root around the screens again to see if the Kms is there somewhere!
I think BYD E6 2021 Model with Blade Battery having 522 kms of range & 580 liters of boot space is better than MG ZS EV
Good morning Bob, greetings from Portugal, good review as always, be safe!
Thanks, you too!
Glad you are doing this Bob, we need a realistic and long term review on these things not market hype. Glad you are doing it, then we will get an honest opinion.
I love the no bs. If its good u say,its its bad ya let it be known. Love this channel. More so than carwow even
Thanks for vid from U.K. Has an ordinary heater. Seats get hot quick. Brilliant in winter. You can get top model for ÂŁ22,000 in U.K. keep safe.
Look forward to the updates on this over the next year.
Be interesting to see how you get on Bob over the next 12 months. I have to say that my Kona EV doesn't have an app & I've never found it an issue, the Leaf I had did have an app & it was useless! Though if I was to give a bit of advise to anyone thinking of buying an EV I'd say buy the car with the best range thats in your budget. The Kona being easily +400km means that apart from a trip to Cork, I've never had to use the public charging system.
I got the Project EV charger and set the time my car charges on that so I don't have to worry about charge times off peak. The app let's you input your electric rates so you can see on the mobile app the full details of charge times and individual cost of each charge. Really good!
Thanks for the video going to be interested in your experience .
Looking forward to hearing more on this, also i agree with earlier comments re the heat pump or lack of, just a restistance heater?
Great review
You're going to really love it come the summer
The squeaky wipers can be fixed with a good liquid window cleaner. It's the lack of use that causes it. I've had the same during covid. We've had such little use that I've just filled the washer bottle since I bought the car on 3rd March last year.
Another couple of points. There is no heat pump. Itâs just an electronic heater. It does sap quite a lot of power. Iâve found as much as 20 miles is regained by turning the HVAC off altogether on the range meter. Itâs actually a lot more economical to heat the seats rather than the whole car. Also, In other countries outside of Europe MG dies have an app and I believe the car is already equipped for its use. Because MG servers are based in China, European law prohibits the use of the app because it collects data that isnât protected under law. That is being addressed. The biggest issue with the car at the moment is battery management. Itâs worth catching up on recent updates as winter range and battery heating are a big fix. Iâve not had mine done year due COVID here in England but I expect it to make a difference in the worst of winter weather.
Close Bob, Exclusive not Executive model.
There are several software updates for this car and the AC charging with the door locked has been resolved as well as being able to charge from a home charge unit app scheduler. Sadly when I asked my local MG dealer when enquiring about this car these software updates they wanted ÂŁ130 for every software update but I've heard not all dealers enforce that stipulation and promoting good customer service.
No onboard charging scheduler or app integration.
I'll check into this Colin, I'm not sure what the deal is here in Ireland with updates.
@@BobFlavinVideo it's called Executive in the EU and Exclusive in the UK. The EU version has an SOS online system the UK doesn't get.
@@cable1722 Before posting I checked MG Ireland and they use the same names as the UK. From what I can see on the MG EU site they call them Comfort and Luxury.
Good day, I like your review and I hope to see more on the MG, I am looking at getting a 6 month old MG executive 70 plate for 20 grand. I have 2 questions if I may,
1, Have you tried the apple connection so your phone is on the screen ?
I saw an Indian review on the MG and Mr Cumberbatch was having a coffee in a cafe and on the advert he was using an app for the car while itâs being charged. Question 2 did you know when we will get the software update like they have in India. Have a nice day
Needs a software update to charge when unlocked on AC - without it, though, youâll still be able to charge on a rapid charger with the doors unlocked just fine.
Lack of a charge timer isnât the catastrophe some seem to think it is - a decent home charger (Ohme, Zappi) will take care of that without issue.
Great to see something more realistically priced in this segment. I recently moved from diesel to petrol and am hoping that by 2.5 years' time there will be better EV choice and range for sensible money available. Once that happens I'll go EV but not until price and range improve. Looking forward to seeing how your experience of this one develops over the year.
Re the charging and needing to lock it first, this has been removed with a software update...the one you have us running on the old software...there are various updates that the dealer will complete once they have the car.
Overall a great review. Iâve had one of these for a 15 months now and produced several videos about it. Enjoy.
MG ZS EV doesn't have a heat pump -- thought it didn't and quick check on specs confirms. Had a short test drive of one some months ago and was impressed, especially at the value for money.
A heatpump is heavily overrated..... it requires maintance, it is weight and you pay quite a lot extra. For a few km more in winter.
If it has AC, it has a heat pump
@@markthomasson5077 Yes, and if a car has 4 wheels, it can drive.
@@markthomasson5077 Yes, but not necessarily used for heating... as is the case here and in most EVs (not that I fully understand why).
An auto diesel golf is the same price as a ID.3. Your right about fossil cars getting more expensive.
WLTP pushed up the prices on ICE and the greedy push with new prices of cars makes them now look expensive and EV's are staring to look reasonable
@@BobFlavinVideo WLTP is just the excuse... most manufacturers need money for their electrification programs, they need to show their revenue holding up to support that debt
This has the makings of a good review of a car.
This is my next car looked at it before but went for a BMW i3 instead as it was half the price, but still fancy it in red and an exclusive model.
Enjoying the BMW had it a year now and cheap to run but still fancy a MG EV.
Good video Bob as normal keep up the good work my friend.
Good choice Steven I find the MG far more practical than the i3 because of the boot space and the room for the kids, plus the back doors!
Hi Bob received my new MG, 2 weeks ago got good deal on px for I3, and yes red exclusive, everything ok with it so far, its even managing to give me 185 on a full charge but found if you have a lot of banks to go up and down goes through the battery quicker and loses a lot of miles due to it. But still learning the car
Hi Bob, a couple of thoughts :
1. Re charging, the car doesn't have any timers, so what did is to buyer a mains socket timer, the the times for cheap rate electric and then plug the Granny charger into it - VoilĂ timed charging.
2. My ZS EV Gen 1 will charge whether it is locked or not. There is a ms update available which may solve this problem.
3. Ref range : I am currently (July 2022) getting 340 kms of range of a full charge. This is achieved with Eco mode, KERS 3 & Hvac switched off. In winter it is lower, perhaps more like 250 kms due to cooler temps, wipers and lights on more, plus Hvac on.
4. No heat pump on any MG ZS's.
If you are charging at home or on a type 2 destination charger you can sit in the car while chargeing if you lock the doors. And you can sit in the car whilst rapid chargeing without locking the doors and with the heater on.The MG zs ev does not have a heat pump.
I like the new intro music and graphics.
Cheers Robbie, more changes on the way soon.
Great video as always Bob,when will we be getting the 2nd part ?
Working on it for the end of the month, economy figures being worked out
@@BobFlavinVideo thanks Bob very much appreciated
play around with the menu and you should find that you can change to digital display from miles to KM. Let me know if you can't find it and I can check mine to give you the exact location of the setting. Also, a charging app is available for Asian markets. EU regulations apparently restrict them from bringing that in just yet but I'm sure they'll eventually bring one into Europe soon.
Hi Bob great review. You recently reviewed the id 4 which you seemed impressed by so the 52kw 348km starts at around 36k which is 3k more than top spec mg zs all be it maybe the mg has a few more bells and whistles but id4 a bit more range .so which one Bob??
ID4 for range and resale value?
You can get a pre-reg exclusive model for ÂŁ21,000 in England if you shop around.
Try Vic Young in South Shields got my Exclusive there for 20.5 grand !
Hi Bob, you can sit in the car with it locked charging, while perhaps waiting for your wife while she is shopping, also using the front Usb you can watch Mp4 movies on the screen and listen to Mp3s, mp4 audio and flack files. Also one can set charging times using an Ohme charger and I believe the Zappi charger can as well.
Hi Bob I have been looking at the MG but have been put off by Thatcham report that it fails the relay test, So Bob use that Faraday bag or the car may not be around for the full test. It's amazing that no testers ever test the security of the vehicles, could you be a first?. Love the show.
I did 2000km road trip in my zs EV all fast charging. In NZ they cost 49K nzd and I enjoy all the high tech.
This is the exclusive model and executive and I have a new one, very happy with it. There is a new update that allows you to sit in the car whilst charging, dealers done that for me. Sounds like he has the old BMS installed and needs updated.. I do wish it had another 100km range and then it be perfect. But I did get the home charger for free which was 1100e. Paid by MG and SEAI.
Exclusive model not executive as mentioned
Using MG ZS EV in India for the last 2+months, little over 2000 kms. I am extremely satisfied with the car, overall, features, handling and comfort.
Hey BOb, any planned vlogs with Tesla Mod 3?
There is an MG app but only in Asia at the moment. Not sure if it will be released in UK/Europe soon. It is available to download and is written in English so maybe its not that far away.
The charging with unlocked doors thing? There is an update that fixes a lot of other things too.
There is an update that allows charging on AC when unlocked, it does do it on DC rapid charging. I do a cheap off peak timed charge using the timer on my home charger, the car doesn't have a timed charge built in. I got mine in August and think it is a good EV for the price.
Thanks for the info, itâs all part of learning. Buying second hand doesnât mean you know if soft wear is done
Same update also allows timed charging if your point at home can be scheduled, Bob. Has been out for six months. Hadn't heard any BONG BONG BONG so it's had that fixed. All updates covered for free by MG but aren't over the air. Nice to see my odd mention of the ZS in online chats has to come to fruition đ
Which one to choose between MG ZS EV with panoromic sun roof & BYD E6 2021 with blade battery, higher mileage & bigger boot space. Is sunroof really useful/necessary ?
Nice shave Bob
Bob bizzarely all EV's use more 'fuel' on motorways as there is not much regenerative braking going on. In town range gets extended by stop/start driving. This means they are better suited as City or Town cars. I like the 'Owner' view where you are getting the niggles that real owners would get.
Loads of niggles, most with the infrastructure and pricing of electric rates!
I look forward to seen all the follow up videos on this car Bob. I'm sure you'll find it very easy to live with. Just a pity you can't pre-heat it from an app.
So good walking up to your car on a minus 4+ morning and you only have to spend two seconds squirting some de-icer on the headlight lenses before getting into a toasty warm car.
I was waiting to see where the cost had been cut. No app support or scheduled charging is massive in EV ownership. Seems like such a silly place to cut cost, hope they can retrofit that in.
What you think about the mess about used cars coming into roi after brexit. Are cars in south going to become even more expensive. Suppose they will change the side of the steering wheel Bob....we get our second hand cars from England.
There are some updates that cover those grips Bob, also, my wipers squeak when they are cold!
I cleaned the wipers and the squeaking stopped so far but we haven't had any rain in days now!
Give the screen and blades a good wash with a bit of washing up liquid just to make sure there's no crap on them. If they still insist on trying to chat you up đ€Ł, might be worth putting a good set of blades on as you're keeping for 12 months.
@@Iceberg1313 they say a wipe with everybody's favorite - pour WD40 on a bit of kitchen roll does the job !
You said the Chinese were coming and you weren't wrong. The price will attract many people, let's hope the dealers look after the customers and the mg adds competition to the market.
Bob where is the next part please
According to MG website this car does not have a heat pump but a basic electric heater also annoyingly it does not have a pre-heat / cool function which even a Nissan env200 van has.
Bob try driving it with the boot open
Just wondering have they sorted out the re-gen when using cruise control, the early models used friction brakes to slow on declines wasting energy.
The only long cruise I've had was a b-road with active cruise on and there was no slowing down. Seems to work the same as other brands so far
It's been confirmed they won't be fixing this and you do lose a few % of range because of it based on people's testing. It's the Bosch auto pilot system stolen from the ICE range so that system doesn't understand regen apparently and it's too much money for them to implement it. You do lose a few miles of range because of it but it's a more relaxing drive with it.
Looks like a good effort by the Chinese especially with regard to price. As always with SUV/crossovers, though, boot space is disappointing considering the size of the car.
I don't think the KERS does trigger the brake lights.
How about an update on the MG pleased
Timed charge is only available from your home charger, if yours has the facility, none built into the car.
The app is available in Thailand and India - no idea why they don't roll it out to the rest of the world.
Will you ever review your own Seat Leon? Could be interesting seeing as itâs had such a long term test
No tmer charging is ridiculous. My 2014 Outlander PHEV has 3 separate timers and also a linked to location function which disables the timer if youâre not at home. That was 2014 and itâs now 2020 and an EV comes out without timer charging?
Software update has now solved this mate.
Such a cool car, but the resale value is probably going to be horrendous...
Most people paid ÂŁ22 / 24.000 for these great car.
How. Many miles you can cover.? Realistically?
200km in all conditions. The WLTP rated 263km is achievable in summer with careful driving.
Buy one here in France for 19000âŹ...its a good car for price
Exclusive, not Executive.
does any electric car have freewheeling when lift off the accelerator? that is something I would want in a EV. then maybe a steering wheel padel, too ease the re-gen on.
It has 3 levels of regeneration on it, number one is almost freewheeling it slows down very slowly, there is a way I have found on the motorway to turn regen off, by putting the cruise control on, on the motorway, set it to say 40 but then drive the car up to 70 with the accelerator, when you take your foot off the accelerator it's just freewheeling.
@@biker779 Does the regen you select return to a default setting once the car is switched off ? Most things do these days for some reason and it drives me nuts :-(
@@Macmonkey1000 yeah it does
It defaults to regen 3 and normal mode when powered on each time.
Make use of those roof rails Bob. Because the ones on the MG5 are largely useless!
I use the app all the time on my EV. And i would need the timer for night time.charging. pity.
Check out the fully charged show, there keeping the price of EV's artificially high so they can sell the petrol versions there making millions of.
Fully charged should not be considered an unbiased news source!
@@BobFlavinVideo Have to agree i'm afraid, it was great before corporate and politics infested it.
No charge timer?? Thatâs a huge problem.
It be added with the latest software update mate.
One pedal driving is the only way if you care about range and efficiency.
this car IS good. for that price it's fantastic. my only issue is depreciation value for MG, so sadly if you calculate your leasing for 2 years (because you are waiting for Arya or Polestar 3), it's starting to sound crazy.
I was amazed after a test drive, but at the end I decided to go fro 3y with Skoda
On the plus side - if you can wait 2 years - you will have an absolute bargain!
@@doggylover1958 TBH? I am considering buying this as a second car if we will return to commuting to work (the first one would be Arya 4x4 performance, or not yet announced Polestar 3), they would be on the market when my enyaq lease is over.

By far the cheapest new EV for sale in Australia right now. Literally $10,000AUD drive-away price cheaper than the nearest EV (which would be the Leaf or the Hyundai IONiq). I think this might even sell better than the Tesla Model 3 here.
How popular is MG in your country, and are people afraid of a Chinese brand product?
MG has just gotten here so everyone is very curious, most don't know it's Chinese as MG used to be an English company. I'd like to try out more Chinese products just to see if they are as good
Dacia is not on Par with this they are visibly cheaper and it shows from a Mile away. Besides this is Electric no gears and no engine means smooth power
I thought MG was dead
Electrification will revive it. It's not a British brand anymore though, it's owned by a chinese automotive.
yes you are absolutely wright electric vehicles are way to expensive and a company like hyundai is now going the wrong way whit the ioniq 5 /6/7 the 5 will cost aroud40k for starters, this is ridiculous. they should instead make a i20/i30 whit 40/50 kw battery starting at 22k and they will sale like pancakes. sheers.
Absolutely zero info on charging times, cost, or convenience, at home or out and about?
It's a series, watch it
Will be very interested to see how you get on with this because despite being committed to diesel I do like the look of this car particularly in the spec you have there though it's a bit beyond my budget at present. What I'd like to see you do is a few long motorway journeys in it which I know affects range but speaking primarily from my own point of view as I may have previously mentioned I do around 70 miles plus a day during the working week which is primarily motorway driving with urban/dual carriageway driving during the weekend and so though I probably will be for that reason going for diesel the next time I change, I know the ever present EV can't be ignored. I noticed you said it does around 250km to a charge which sounds like a lot but in reality for those of us that deal in miles that's 155 miles which means as much as I do like this car, I'd be charging it more or less every 2nd day, due to the limited range, it's doubtful as to whether it would be of much use to me.
Known issues so far are under car rust and infotainment screens going blank for no reason.
No sponsor but a car for free for one year, hum... BTW, 95% of Tesla buyers don't buy a Tesla for speed but for range and rapid charge, and I guess for safety.
95% of Tesla owners could buy two MGs for the price of one Tesla. There is NO sponsorship deal, please donât elude to any connection because it would be very wrong and it will make you look silly. Watch some other videos, Iâm very proud to be as independent as is possible
