I enjoy your videos. You 2 guys are an interesting window into the lives of average DPRK soldiers.
    1. The US "combat foods" are also known as M.R.E.'s (Meals, Ready to Eat). Typically they are foods that can be reheated with a heating pack provided in the bag (it uses a chemical reaction when water is added to the pack). Other foods include different kinds of bread or crackers, cookies or pastries, and even candies (M&M, Skittles, etc). These also come with coffee, kool-aid, or hot chocolate. The MRE is designed to have enough calories to sustain a soldier for 24 hours. They are not very bulky and can fit easily in the cargo pockets on your pants.
    2. Not every soldier is equipped with a bulletproof vest. There are different styles depending on the mission, and the comfort of the wearer.
    3. NVG's (night vision goggles) are also not issued to every soldier. It depends on the mission and what their job is.
    4. While the gear can be heavy, generally American soldiers don't have to carry it very far. They do train to hike long distances with a full pack, but more often than not they use vehicles to get personnel and their gear where they need to go.
I hope this clears up some confusion.

US Military gear is designed for the terrain that the soldiers are deployed in. As for the cold weather gear, often it is given to soldiers who are going to be in cold weather environments. If a soldier wants to carry extra gear, while often discouraged, it is allowed, within reason. The Poncho liners are actually liners designed to wear inside of a rain poncho, it can be used for other purposes. Here it's used as a blanket, it can be placed in a sleeping bag as insulation, or inside the floor of a tent as a way of keeping dry. The gearload is generally 40lbs (18Kgs).

As a former American soldier who served in South Korea, this is very informative and I enjoy your youtube channel very much.

My load-out was fairly light with plates no ammo, it was guaranteed 80 pounds solid... add 50 pounds for ammo for M240b and MRE’s for the trip and you’re set!
The sleeping gear was “essential” only if you can’t sleep on the ground, but a huge waste of space and weight overall, the poncho was a glorified tent, and nothing else as they issue you cold and warm weather sets of weatherproof pants/jackets.
They issue you a bandolier, 2-3mag pouches, 3 single mag pouches, 2- grenade pouches, a concussive grenade pouch, 2-2mag pouches, a 3 day bag, ruck sack, sleeping pad, poncho, poncho liner, cold weather weather-proof outfit, warm weather weather-proof outfit, winter boots, summer boots, Kevlar (k-pot) helmet (not like the old steel pot), Molle vest, and a few other things I can’t remember, I only ever used a couple things from the issue, and we had to do a 4 hour personal inventory every month to make sure we have everything...

When I was still serving _(U.S. Army 19D-B2, Calvary Scout Sniper, 2004-2012)_ my operational kit was _slightly_ different than an Infantryman due to my particular MOS _(job)_ obviously. However, when actually traveling from one staging point to another, it became the normal, standard kit with just a few differences. Your kit was, to a degree, based on _your_ weight. You'd have the standard gear, but then extra magazines, ordinance, water, food, etc up to a certain weight. You _could_ exceed that weight, to a certain extent, but it was highly recommended that you didn't. The DoD has done endless reseach on how to keep their soldiers able to stay battle ready at all times, even after long marches, and the gear/weight ratio is one of the most important for stamina's sake.
My helmet and vest were far lighter, but my rifles _(issued three 'primary' weapons 2x Rifles - open field/anti-material and urban/personnel - as well as a DMR variant of the M4 for when attached to an infantry unit - but two tended to stay locked up inside my port in tthe unit's Bradley when not actively using them, so it isn't as if I carried all 3 at a time),_ ammo, etc were heavier by quite a bit. Thus it balanced out in the end. Due to the weight difference between, for example, the 5.56mm rounds and .308 (7.62mm) I carried fewer rounds, obviously, but I also carried only one spare magazine for my .45 sidearm. All of these seemingly minor changes to my kit for the sake of weight were, in fact, fairly _major_ changes to my combat effectiveness in different situations. For example:
Your standard kit on an infantryman _(ignoring specialties such as squad gunner)_ would allow them to rotate between controlled fire (aim and pop individuals) and true suppression fire (make a wall of hot lead that only the very stupid don't seek cover from, even though it isn't accurate, and this is effective against groups of almost any size). They can do so for both short skirmishes, and protracted pitched firefights. If they supress fairly often in a pitched fight they may run low on ammo, but 9/10 times they can grab a few spare magazines off others in their unit. On the other hand - I was _not_ equipped for large scale pitched firefights. Ever. My contribution to such was by way of creating caution amongst the enemy in their movements, and removing those soldiers manning artillery or squad weapons ("machine guns"). That _may_ just seem logical, thanks to what you see in movies about snipers and marksmen, but to be quite honest... your average infantryman is far more useful in a prolonged fight than is a sniper. Generally that (and occasionally joining infantry on urban patrols just to give them either overwatch or support... and give us something to do before we get bored and cause trouble lol) was when we would ditch the rifles for our DMR variants. (Designated Marksman Rifle... generally not even rifles, they're simply M4 Carbines - normally, there are others - with longer barrels, cheek riser stocks, better optics, etc) due to the increase in ammo capacity, and the ability to deliver more firepower down range. There are many times where quantity actually _is_ better than quality in a firefight.
Anyway, I rambled as I often do. Point is: Yes. American soldiers carry more weight than most any other nation's soldiers... _when they are marching or moving to a staging point..._ They rarely, if ever, actually carry their full ruck on patrols, or into firefights, knowingly. Thus, in combat they ditch almost 75% of the weight they've got on them.

ahhhh man. I was in an arctic unit in Alaska. We have expensive arctic gear that would blow the dog fur blanket out the window. we have to sleep outside starting below -20 degrees F once or twice a year for training. Our sleeping bag keeps you warm. that's how advanced the U.S. is. There is so much equipment for every single type of weather and landscape.

for those who didnt know, the steel helmet shown at the start is actually a copy of the Soviet ww2 era Ssh-40 helmet. it can only stop 9mm pistol rounds at a distance

It'd be a fun video to see them try MREs from different militaries around the world.
