Janis Joplin was influenced by the blues singers of the 1920’s/1930’s and when she found out that singer Bessie Smith’s grave was unmarked she bought a gravestone for her.
Janis was gone way too soon

Janis was born in January 1943. I believe she was from Port Arthur, Texas. She died in October 1970. She’d be 81 today had she lived. One thing was for certain, she was one hell of a blues singer.☮️💟

Although Summertime is most often sung by jazz singers, it's actually a song (aria) from George Gershwin's opera Porgy & Bess. Janis' version is totally unique though. But Janis was a pretty unique lady and talent. Someone mentions Jimi Hendrix. Well, if Jimi took the guitar where it had never gone before, Janis did the same for the human voice.

    Janis was an Angel
Sweet little Girl who was Viciously Abused by the Pigs around Her while Growing Up in Racists Texas.
Her Pain just came Pouring Out in the Last of the 60's and I'm Happy and Crying for being there to Watch the Whole Story Play Out in front of Me.
The year 1970 was Tearing Me apart with the Beatles Splitting, Janis, Jimi and Jim Morrison all Leaving Me at the Same Time and I'm only a Young Teen.
I hope You get to Hear Ella Fitzgerald with Louis Armstrong do this Song " Summertime" as a Duet cuz it is Absolutely Beautiful to Listen To while Relaxing with a Snack and Drink.
    Lovs the Reactions Sweetie
    Peace OOT EH from Canada.

We can only imagine that, if she could express pain with such depth and character, she undoubtedly felt pain more intensely than most. She had an old, tortured soul.

    • @tlee4218
      @tlee4218 Před 5 měsíci +1

What is wrong with her musicians? She liked raw music, not studio sound.
World class corporations would not allow her to sing what she wanted, her way.
I worked in music business back then. Like now is still a problem of who has right to lead.
Look at Swift even she is re-recording her songs so she can own them. She wrote them, sang but can’t own them? Same old story. Greed by the untalented.

Hearing them for the first time when they first hit the music scene we were stunned knowing that we had never heard anything like them before , totally mesmerized by them when they preformed .
no one like them had existed before and of course no one will ever equal either one of them . i remember when they died and I've really have never gotten over it and often think what could have been if they lived longer.

there are some great versions of this tune, Janis' is one of the best. I grew up listening to my Dad singing it in the Style of Paul Robeson, who had an exceptionally DEEP voice, one I just know would move you. The music is dated now but his voice remains pure, his versions of Old Man River & Swing Low Sweet Chariot were played at my Dad's funeral.

I love your review. And I wholeheartedly agree with you -- JJ's talent was not of this earth.
It is frightening to listen to her. You don't know how far she will go, and you KNOW she did not hold back in any way. She would go wherever the music lead her, with the abandon of a wild animal. I worry that she will explode, or something. Actually explode.
