I remember how she shocked the world back then. She was really special.
I love how black listeners have no problem with this at all [See Jamel/Jamal listening to the Righteous Brothers for example]... No accusations of co-opting a culture or any other such nonsense... Just feeling what they are putting across and going, "Wow, the sister really has something special..." Interesting Note: The lady watching Janis performing here at The Monterey Pop Festival in 1967 is Cass Elliott from the group "The Mamas & The Papas". Her mouth drops & she mouths “Wow" after a particularly strong vocal run from Janis.

She also happened to be one (along with 4 others) of the originators of Monterey Pop in a meeting at her house a few months before that initial Pop event. The first performance by Janis and Big Brother wasn't filmed, as they weren't well known and hadn't been signed by a major label. But after hearing them, they were called back and a shortened set was shoehorned into a slot the next evening so that they could be filmed for the Pennebaker _Monterey_ _Pop_ documentary film (and that is the video shown in this reaction). We're lucky that at least this was preserved.
