She was bullied relentlessly as a kid. She would sneak out of her home and into the back of black churches just to watch the gospel. I did many papers on her in college. I have much respect for her . we lost a legend

I knew some of the stuff about her...I didn't know she snuck into black churches to listen to gospel music. She wasn't my cup of tea in the 1960's when I was growing up but I have in my 70's become a fan.

Wrong! That was Elvus going to Black churches. He was part a Black Baptist choir. As a teenager in East Texas, Janis & friends would sneak to Louisiana Black bars to listen to Blues. Her family shunned her. Both were Southerners & Black people music were their inspiration. Both Freakin Great & Genius.

"Summertime" was written by George Gershwin as part of "Porgy & Bess" back in 1934 and has been recorded numerous times, notably by Billie Holiday, Sam Cooke, and Billy Stewart, whose version resounds with horns and scat singing like you won't believe. This Janis Joplin version stands out for her singing, of course, but also for its arrangement which varies slightly from other versions. Check out her version of "Me and Bobby McGee" when you can.

Poor Janis, never really got to feel the full appreciation and respect she eventually would recieve from peers and fans . Every moment spent trying to please someone, feel wanted, part of something, pitiful people make someone feel that way over what they perceive as superiority or fairer looks or better qualities that are given, not earned. She showed em, but did she ever know? She was a little homely, but if you were her friend, familiar with everything about her, how could you not be head over heels in love with her!!??! Baffles me

Then I watched this documentary on PBS about her. She was born & raised in Port Arthur Texas. I'm from Dallas. She was relentlessly bullied in high school & college. I was in middle & high school. She was my heo. To this day. I love her. She was a beautiful spirit. Inside & out. I wish I could've met her. 🥺🖤
