- We have made it to the final episode of the fifth season of Basement of Horror. Thank you for watching! This special episode explores the phenomenon of the Brazilian horror icon Zé do Caixão, known as Coffin Joe in the U.S. and U.K. We will look at vintage and modern Coffin Joe collectibles, discuss the character's history, and delve into my personal experience with Coffin Joe's creator, actor/director José Mojica Marins.
It's a long episode. But even at this length, there is much I left out. To fill in the story, I would recommend you visit my website Diary do Demonio:
www.stateofhorror.com/demonio...
I traveled to Brazil in 2006 and 2008 and had the honor of working with Mojica on a historic Coffin Joe film project. During both trips, I kept a daily diary. The Diary do Demonio website is the online version of that diary.
I also recommend you watch this December 2022 episode of the Dark Shadows podcast Terror at Collinwood:
• Terror at Collinwood E...
Host Penny Dreadful (Danielle Gelehrter) interviewed me for this episode. Before we discussed Dark Shadows, we talked at length about my connection to Coffin Joe. I related my experience working with Mojica and what it meant to me.
Finally, here is a short film I made in 2008 called The Blind Date of Coffin Joe. It's a parody that, thankfully, met with Mojica's approval. It won some awards, played at festivals, and was aired on broadcast television in Brazil.

Thank you so much, Raymond. It's truly fascinating to go on this gloriously epic retrospective with you, one that I've hoped you would produce for some time now -- told as only you could have told it. A genuine treat for Classic Horror and Coffin Joe fans everywhere!
Thank you!
Well, I'm only 22 minutes into the episode, will probably have to finish it piecemeal, but you've already accomplished in the first 20 minutes something I did not expect. I've been aware of Coffin Joe as a character for quite some time, but after cursory investigation decided it was not my bag. But listening to your heartfelt reminiscing of your own discovery and how it affected you has me thinking about the best way for me to start seeing these films. At least the trilogy, if not more. So congratulations! :-) Looking forward to watching the rest of the episode and seeking out these films....
Thank you! You need not bother with the end of the video. Nothing important happens there.
@@RaymondCastileMe thinks thou dost protest too much.... I'm at 56 min. now and not ABOUT to miss the end of this exciting season finale!.
Ah, just finished up the episode. Worth every second! And I was so hoping there might be a personal visit from CJ. And there was! Great ending, and I always appreciate your vulnerability in sharing aspects of your experience as you did here. I appreciate you and what you're doing. Enjoy your time off and we'll see you for season 6. :-)
Sir, you are in for a very dark and illuminating treat!
This has been like a roller coaster ride. All the cool stuff , the subject alone is sweet ,& the personal tie-in was the cherry on the cake. Great season finale !
Thank you!
@@RaymondCastile :D
Took me a few days to get through this whole video, but it was worth it, I learned so much about a character and a man that I really had very little knowledge about other than he existed and he was from Brazil, Just started watching his first movie on CZcams with subtitles, I’m really liking it and also I really liked hearing the parts of this video pertaining to how you felt as if you willed yourself into that reality/world, can’t wait for next season of basement of horror
Thank you for sticking with it! I'm glad you enjoyed it!
Holy smokes Raymond, I found "Embodiment of Evil" to be the single most frightening movie I have EVER seen, and I've witnessed some extreme stuff. You played the rising from the swamp scene with ferocious conviction, as if you had truly let Maron possess you.
What a soul-wrenching treasure that movie was. I had the worst dreams of my life the night I watched it. It shook me to the core. Good job! What good fortune he found you and was
able to complete his long awaited third of the trinity. A master magician and artist. Francisco Goya has been a potent recent inspiration, along the lines of looking the horror
of life directly in the eye. Bob Dylan: "The human mind can only take so much." Marin was
one courageous visionary.
Thank you! I'm glad you liked Embodiment of Evil!
Not even the casket can decry the eternal reach and spirit of Coffin Joe!
You, Raymond, are his spiritual conduit on earth. Until you two meet again.
Great, supreme, imperial and stellar episode!
I loved it.

PS- I'm almost half Portuguese from my mother's side.
Thank you! I like the adjective "imperial" used this way.
Seeing this renews my faith in the interwebz.
Thank you!
This was glorious Raymond, we need fewer Art The Clowns and more Coffin Joes in the movies, I was friended with Jose back when I was on facebook, it never failed to upset me I could not do something - anything for that visionary.
Thank you! I wouldn't put down Art the Clown. It's not on the same artistic level as Coffin Joe, but it's keeping up a tradition of transgressive horror that is "not OK." When people look at "problematic" horror films from the past and say, "You couldn't do that in a movie today." Well, the Terrifier team is doing "that" in movies today, in the middle of what is probably the most culturally repressed era of my lifetime. So I have to congratulate them. But what they are doing is nothing compared to what Mojica accomplished in the 60s, in a country run by an oppressive dictatorship, in a stiflingly repressed cultural climate, with no precedent to draw upon, no cultural tradition of popular horror entertainment. The US, UK, Italy, Germany, France, Japan, Mexico all had cinematic horror traditions by the 60s. But not Brazil. Not until Mojica cracked it open. Like you, I felt pretty helpless reading about his plight on Facebook. It was sad watching from a great distance as this larger-than-life man slowly crumbled into oblivion. As fans, it's not our place to wonder if we could have done something. He and his family were in charge, and their wishes have to be respected. I'm sure they did everything that could have been done, within the parameters of what Mojica did or did not want. The Master is gone. His disciples must carry on.
@@RaymondCastile the first movie with Art (All Hallows Eve) was intriguing but the others seemed like they are just gore for gore sake, but I get where you are coming from.
By the way, I just watched Black Exorcism, it was genuinely scary.
Great episode! If it wasn't for Basement of Horror, I would probably have no idea of Coffin Joe and the films. Your channel is very important not just for vintage toys and collectibles, but for learning and understanding of what things are and the value of it. Thank you for a great season.
Thank you very much!
Best. Ending. Ever!!!!!!👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Thank you!
Great story. Thanks for sharing. Very interesting.
Thank you!
Irreplaceable? Nahhh… as long as I’m still drawing breath, I could replace your Mojica figure, or any broken parts
Great episode
Matt
Thank you! A duplicate would still be a gift from you, but that original one represents a certain moment in time that cannot be replicated.
That was a great video, Raymond. So much wonderful information on Coffin Joe. It's fantastic that you're keeping the love for Coffin Joe alive. This was a very heart felt video, that was just as much a glimpse into your life, as it was into the life of Jose Mojica Marins. The story that you told about being a part of each other's lives, and breaking the curse, was especially moving. That is a very special connection and a treasured memory that may only come once in a lifetime, if ever at all. And with all of the filming that you've done, the music that you've made, and the Basement of Horror community that you've cultivated, I think it's safe to say that you are just as important to all of us, as Jose Mojica Marins is to you. Keep up the awesome work, Sir. 💀
Than you for your kind words! I'm glad I have enriched your life in some small way.
@@RaymondCastile You definitely have, and I thank you for that.
so soothing just watching you take your time showing us your peerles treasure....
Thank you!
Great episode! I'm super jealous of all the cool merchandise you have, especially the comics. I have one comic from either the 90s or 2000s, I forget. Oh and my Something Weird T-shirt was printed in red, fwiw. Not sure if they did the green one later, earlier or if someone else did it. I have the catalog from 1995 from which I ordered it and it says right on it that it comes in red (the images are all b&w). There's also a couple cool pages of photos in there from a handmade book called "Coffin Joes Visions of Terror", that apparently a friend made for him as a gift in 1971. I love that catalog. Reminds me when the world of cinema was so fresh and exciting for me.
Thank you! The shirt I remember seeing in LA had green lettering, so I never questioned the color. The shirt is copyrighted 1994 Something Weird Productions, Seattle, Washington. Something Weird put out a VHS compilation called Coffin Joe's Visions of Terror. I don't have it, but it's on CZcams. It's mostly trailers. I thought it would be short films, but it's not. It does include Mojica's "Nightmare" segment from Trilogy of Terror (1968). I wish there was a way to view Mojica's short films, especially the original early 1980s version of Encarnação do Demônio. I have no idea what that is like.
What a fantastic video. Just saw the first two movies for the first time; had the same revelatory feeling about them that you had. Had to find more and thrilled to find you!
Thank you!
Wow what a comprehensive review and collection! I’ve wanted to do a portrait bust/model for years and this has reignited that idea. These films are at the top of my favorites list!
Thank you! Yes, do a portrait bust!
I never seen an ending to any show this good!!😂
And a wonderful tribute to Coffin Joe and his work. Bravo
Thank you! I wonder how many people make it to the end.
Your work and research and dedication are important and inspiring! Thank you thank you❤❤❤
Thank you!
Thank you. ❤
I'm not surprised one bit that Arrow is working on a Coffin Joe bluray set. Hopefully they'll include the more obscure films in Mojica's Coffin Joe series and not just the main 3.
I don't know what is in the set, but I hope it is extensive. This is probably our one last chance to get these films properly restored and preserved for the future.
Ray ...
- stressful week at work, so glad for the weekend, woke up, checked youtube
- I mistakenly thought your season was already over,
- surprised to see a video from you, saw the '70s Special intro, got excited just like a kid for Saturday Morning cartoons
- I've seen the pictures of you as young Coffin Joe and you've mentioned that you'd eventually do a video about this.
- I've been waiting years to see this video, and unlike some things you wait years for, it surpassed my expectations.
- The story of successfully willing yourself into that world, blew my mind. I'm like you, I don't hard-believe in stuff, but I've had things happen in life that were so magical like that.
- The ending was a jolt, a surprise, so bad-ass and it made me emotional!
- You are my favorite video creator on youtube.
Thank you.
Thank you! Your reaction is what I was hoping to achieve.
Hooray!! I'm so proud to be friends with Coffin Joe!
Yay! Thank you! I am happy to be friends with you!
I finally got to watch the second half of your fantastic season finale video this morning. It was such a heartfelt, personal tribute. Thank you for sharing your feelings and experiences. I can identify with feeling cursed and not being on my home planet, too. Last but certainly not least, that ending was sensational and wonderful in every way and made me very happy!
🖤 🎩 ⚰️
Thank you, Danielle! I hoped you would enjoy this! I can tell that we are kindred spirits in many ways.
Recently found your channel. I love what you're doing. Just going back and checking things out. I'm not a collector nor am I familiar with most of these things (I am a monster/halloween fan) but I find them fascinating. I can't wait to watch all of your videos
Thank you for checking out my channel!
It took a few sessions but I finally completed this episode and enjoyed every minute! Great stuff, Raymond. I keep coming back to your channel because of your enthusiasm for, and deep knowledge of, the content you cover. Thanks for all the work you put into your videos - looking forward to next season!! Oh, and I guess if there's another breakout of COVID there will no longer be a need to search your basement, looking for the source...
Thank you! I have sterilized the basement with hell fire. There are no COVID organisms here.
hi raymond thanks for this episode it was great
Thank you!
The return of Coffin Ray. Haven't seen him since the old UMA days. :)
He's never completely gone.
Fantastic video. Always great getting to know more about you.
Thank you!
I was at that 1994 Chiller Convention (I was 20 years old at the time) and got Joe's autograph on a poster.
What poster did he autograph?
Awesome!
Thank you!
The fotonovelas magazines were very popular in Brazil and all over Latin America, stories told in photographs like a comic book movie in magazine form, they sold millions! The romance fotonovelas were the most popular genre followed by horror
Thank you for that insight!
Hey man this was absolutely amazing brother!! Im very much a Coffin Joe noob but instantly I was hooked in by the talons lol..I am covering the new Arrow set a couple films at a time and would like to know if youd be interested in coming on the channel to discuss Mojica?
Thank you for watching! I'm not in an interview/guest frame of mind right now. I've had a few other requests that I haven't accepted. I've got a lot going on at the moment.
@@RaymondCastile ok no worries just if you do feel up to it just let me know I appreciate it brother
Think it was Night Flite back late 80’s first learned of Joe. We traded vhs tapes through Goldmine to get them.
What was Night Flite? Was it a video store?
@RaymondCastile Do you think Coffin Joe would've ever considered doing a film where he was pitted against El Santo?
If someone put up the money and paid him an advance, he would have done it! I can’t imagine him initiating a project like that.
Goddamn do I miss Ze
It's depressing to know he's not here.
I use to hav yrs ago a Coffin Joe dvd coffin set but I later parted w it. I thought about buying a copy or back but I hav yet done sone so. But he is one interesting person in films.
Those sets are getting expensive. I'm thinking of buying another before they go any higher.
Now this is how you do a season finalé . Great memories and filled with info about a character and actor I would never know if not for this channel . Have a great summer Raymond and see you in the fall . Cheers , Tom
Is Ze's museum still operational?
No, it hasn't been operational in many years.
Do you already understand Portuguese?
No. I could speak it a little back in 2006 and 2008. I tried to teach myself Portuguese. But I haven't used it since then.
