I met mr Mojica several times, few people knew that in the late 1990's he used to throw what he called "creativity workshops" with his daughter, both in their characters of Coffin Joe and Vampyra, funny duo they were. She took care of him in old age, she was by his side in life and at the bitter end. He once jokingly said that he never found the superior woman but he made a superior woman, I guess he was right.

Coffin Joe!! I've only seen the first film. Once. Lots of great imagery in it, but a lost of it is really hard to take. I saw the preview to the second film and decided to pass on it. But I remember the cool coffin shaped box set that was for sale about ten years ago. I kind of regret not picking that up.

I've only just seen the most recent sequel, and didn't know anything about the earlier parts of the trilogy. Very informative review, cheers!

@@retrohorror5418 - it's on my to-do list for sure. The list is now longer than Joe's fingernails.

Hi Wayne. I like the way you described the series. It's weird as hell, but there was some enjoyment in it as well. I've been eyeing that Synapse trilogy. I might have to snap it up.

Hi Todd, I definitely recommend picking it up. It has a unique history within the horror genre

About 10 years ago or so I purchased the Coffin Joe DVD Trilogy that came in a brown cardboard coffin, and comic books for the 3 films. The set was limited to 10,000 if I remember, and each box was individually numbered. I wonder what the difference in transfer is, and if Synapse plan on a blu ray release as a box set at some point?

great questions. This release was my first introduction to coffin joe. i bet that set from 10 years ago is worth some cash

So it isn’t just me who watches his films and wonders just how he goes about using the toilet in real life what with those damn fingernails of his, lol. I’m guessing he must have an assistant who wipes his ass for him, not a particularly enviable job, but as Embodiment of Evil proves Coffin Joe does have his devoted followers.
Incidentally i was watching a HBO drama series recently called 'Magnifica 70', which is set amidst the backdrop of the 1970s Brazilian porn industry and is really an eye-opener about the extreme censorship regime that Brazil was suffering under back then. After watching that series you can really understand why the Coffin Joe films had all the censorship problems that they did (the first episode of Magnifica 70 does even include a brief reference/homage to Coffin Joe himself).

interesting. I would think any of the south american dictatorship countries would be near impossible to work under as an artist
