Sungold Monster figures - Raymond Castile's Basement of Horror

- In the 1990s, Sungold distributed a series of knockoff classic monster action figures aimed at the dollar store market. The set was simply called "Monster!" The same figures were distributed in Europe by the German company Simba, but were marketed under the name "Monster Vampire." These cheap but charming figures are interesting for their crude designs that mimic the 1960s Louis Marx Universal Monsters figurines, the Playmates Toxic Crusaders figures, and feature a Where's Waldo version of Freddy Krueger.

These knockoffs are incredible. Love the card art on them! Thanks for sharing them with us Raymond!
Thank you!
Thank you for sharing. This would have been a great toy line to pLay with if I were younger. I was 21 in 91 and wasn’t paying attention to toys at that point. I have no memory of these.
I think I would have enjoyed these as a kid. I grew up with Mego, Steve Austin, Star Wars. I guess, if I were a kid in the 90s, I would have liked whatever was in the stores.
Very cool bloody card art. I have never seen those figures until now.
Glad you like them!
What a fun line! Freddy Krueger, a toxic avenging hunchback and the classic monsters. Wild! Enjoying this episode with some Saturday morning coffee 👀☕️
Thank you! They are a fun group of weird little toys.
I find these to be so funny. Dracula resembles Arnold Schwarzenegger. The Mummy resembles Frank Sinatra. My favorite has to be the Freddy/Waldo figure. Might as well have a few laughs while we are "waiting to die". I was hoping Billy would make another appearance. It was nice seeing him, if only for a few seconds.
I'm glad we got to see Billy! He hasn't been on for a long time. His agent is charging a higher fee these days.
@@RaymondCastile I hope you won't have to sell off too many of your favorites in order to pay his agent! We need more Billy.
Completely completely agree about squishing the heads of action figures
Absolutely!
Hi Raymond, a very interesting toy line in deed, I remember seeing these at a local Big Lots in the very early 90's. Thanks for sharing !
Thank you! I looked for these at dollar stores when they were new, but I never found them.
These look really cool! Never knew about them until your video. Thank you for sharing. And as a bonus, we got to see Billy! 🧟♂️
Thank you!
Loving the lowkey existential dread coming from this review
All my videos are like that.
Great review
Thank you!
Thanks again for sharing your cool collectables with us Mr. Castile. And it's always a treat to see Billy esp looking so sleek and healthy.
Just before Christmas I commented that I'd ordered the Blu-Ray set 'Inside the Mind of Coffin Joe' and you'd responded but I had the CZcams notifications turned off somehow and didn't see it until a week or so ago. Well, Amazon sent me an email that my copy should be here by the end of January. Hope you get yours soon as well. I'm really looking forward to checking these out!
Thank you! Yes, I want Billy to stay healthy! I got my Coffin Joe sets. They sent me two. But Awakening of the Beast has subtitle problems, so they have to send replacement discs. I might do a video on the set, but only after the replacement discs are available. I don't want to tell people to buy something that has a technical issue.
@@RaymondCastile I think I speak for everyone that we wish Billy to be strong and healthy for a long time to come! Thanks for the warning. I just got my set and have only watched the first two films so far. I'll be on the lookout for the subtitle issues on 'Awakening'. I'd love to see a commentary from you on the set. I'm planning to go back and watch your Coffin Joe episode again when I finish the set.
I have 3 of the on card mummy ,wolfman ,hunchback ,I bought them at a flea market many yrs ago real cheap but to complete the set now won’t cheap like then
You have a good start, at least.
I definitely want to be Sharp Hand Joe for Halloween now!
You would have a lot of confused questions.
I still have thr Wolfman, I thought it was a bonafide universal Chaney Wolfman!
It's a genuine knockoff. Some collectors would prefer that over a licensed figure.
There's no solid information about Sungold unfortunately. They are known for all the many knock off toys they created. Especially the Galaxy Warriors. Great video again!
Thank you for your perspective. I know you are very into knockoff and unlicensed figures.
I dont know if youve seen Phalin Phalis, but he has a seroes on Sungold's Masters of The Universe knockoffs. There might be some background information on the company in one of them. He's really done a Deep Dive on those.
Thank you for the suggestion. I had not heard of him. I will check him out.
Killing beast reminds me of Koukol from Fearless vampire killers
I had not thought of that, but you're right.
Man... those Sungold backing cards are pretty gruesome looking for 4 year old kids to be looking at! 🔪
Playmates could be pretty gruesome, too. I remember being surprised at how grim they could get with their TMNT and Toxic Crusaders figures.
@@RaymondCastile True.
just to clarify; the poster behind you is no longer sold right?
The poster is from the 70s, but there are reproductions.
wtf how are they allowed to use sharp hand joe's likeness, from the bad dream on oak avenue film series
Ha!
I like these figures but don't love them. However, I am stealing "Sharp Hand Joe" for something, I don't know what.
He might visit you in your dreams. He won't kill you...just poke you a little.
have you taken percocet before this video?)))) you are so sedated
Never heard of that medication. The rest of CZcams is so hyper that it more than compensates for my sedated approach.
@@RaymondCastile it's an opioid simmilar to oxycontin))
Voice makes me tired
get some sleep
It’s a good thing. Soothing ASMR
I Remember looking for a Sharp Hand Joe for MONTHS on Ebay, Finally one day someone put one up for 40 pounds. i live in Texas, Leatherface Capital of the World.. so it came out to around $45 in USD.. i asked the seller to please pack it well, because i was so happy i finally found someone selling it, and for a NOT insane price "i had heard of the figure selling for $150 to $200 before" so it gets to me... the person shipped it from the UK to me in Texas... in a bubble Envelope.
keep in mind to anyone watching this video, or reading my comment... these figures, these knock offs, while awesome for their detail "i mean, most knock offs are terrible, but i think this line's sculpts have an undeniable charm to them!" they are *INCREDIBLY DELICATE!* well.. of course he was completely smashed to pieces. so i got my money back. but the cool thing is someone else uploaded one without the "Scoop" hand for $20! once again... in the UK. this time however this seller actually cared about ol Sharp Hand Joe's Travel across the Pond... and MY Mental health. so now i got him on my Desk, with about 30 other Horror/Slasher Toys of all types. i was also able to get the "Killing Beast" not too long after, too. i hope one day to get the rest of this line, and hopefully a Sharp Hand Joe on the Card..
I've had experiences like that. It's bizarre! I hope you find the rest of them.
