    Reinstalling your computer with rekordbox
    This guide works also if you want to move your rekordbox to another computer
    1) make a backup:
    rekordbox collection / via the menu LIBRARY - BACKUP and store on a safe location like an external hard disk or usb stick.
    music files / on a safe location like an external hard disk or usb stick
    backup app itself on a safe location like an external hard disk or usb stick
    backup the rekordbox XML on a safe location like an external hard disk or usb stick. This is only nessary if you want the change the location of the music files.
    2) note down which directory you put your music and which username you used. Case sensivity of letters is important
    3) reinstall your computer and make a user account with the same name as before
    4) install rekordbox from backup
    5) put your music files in the same directory as it was before
    6) import the rekordbox backup
    if you have choosen another username or another directory than the original, rekordbox cant find the music files.
    scary workaround, not supported by pioneer:
    ON YOUR OWN RISK!! I DO NOT SUPPORT IT.
    I DONT WANT ANY COMMENTS TO SAY THAT IT FAILED. ITS AT YOUR OWN RISK.
    IF IT FAILS, ITS YOUR OWN FAULT.
    1) make sure rekordbox collection is empty. Otherwise in the /library/pioneer/ folder, delete the ‘rekordbox’ folder.
    2) download and open TextWrangler, or any other text editor. we are goig to edit the Rekordbox XML file
    3) open the file and replace the path of the music files the xml file. Make sure that the text you are searching for is unique, otherwise other text or settings will be accidentally replaced too. This will currupt your xml file or your library. The %20 is the code for a space.
    4) in the Rekordbox settings, point to the xml file
    5) now import the playlists by dragging them from the xml file to your library
    6) after the beachball freeze, shoot the application from the process list or right click on the icon and choose forced quit.
    7) Open Rekordbox again
    8) Rekordbox needs to analyse alle the files again. This might take a while. After this is done, you are good to go.
    There is a more time consuming alternative, only available in Rekordbox 5.
    You can export all your songs to USB and then import them back from the usb drive.
    If your library is bigger than 32Gb, you have to do that in stages of 32GB each

    Thanks for the tutorial! I have a question. Basically I have rekordbox on my macbook and on my window PC , the USB sticks are formatted on FAT32. Can I use it on both devices without having to format them differently or MS-DOS will do ? (The case is I travel a lot, the main database is in my window PC but i need to update my library on the go - with the Macbook )
    Please help me, thanks a lot!!!

    Do you know how to change the file paths of Rekordbox5 files after moving all my iTunes12 music to an External HD? I have moved the iTunes files w ease and it knows where to songs are. My main issue now is that Rekordbox files (cue points/grid,etc) cannot be found due to the old path. Any solutions here for me other than relocating each file manually? Thx

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 6 lety

      well, not easily.
      use the 'missing file' feature in Rekordbox a couple of times.
      It is really helpful if all the music files are just in a few directories, otherwise it takes forever to find them all.
      Luckily it searches for more than one file when you point to a location.

    Hello DJ Dexxter,
    I kindly would like to ask how to COPY my collection from a laptop to another (Windows to Windows), that includes all my tags, hot cues, comments, etc... for each track.

    Any idea how to copy only playlists and track markers/cue points? I have already installed Rekordbox on my new machine and newly added and analysed my whole library collection. I would just like the playlists I made in my old machine to be duplicated along with the cue and markers I put on those tracks. Would exporting the playlist as .m3u8 from the old machine and importing this to the new machine include all this data?

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 4 lety

      do an export of your playlist like you normally would do to a usb stick (but now a hard drive).
      Import that like you normally would import from a usb stick on the new computer
      But get rid of the analyzed database on your new computer

    I would like to copy my tracks, playlists and cue points from windows to mac but I don't want to use the move database option because that would delete it from my old pc. I tried copying the datafile to the mac but that didn't work. Can you please advise me how to do this? Thanks

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 6 lety

      Pioneer officially says you can't do that. Never tried it, but I don't see why not.
      Indeed, try to copy the datafile, but the file structure on windows is different than mac. Try "relocate file"option (see my video: czcams.com/video/IpiafaTt0bw/video.html ) to find your files. I think that will probably work

    @travisbickle9745 Před 6 lety

    thanks for the video! but why is there an option to "move database" in "Advanced Preferences" when you literally can move your database by just using the backup option?
    and if you use dropbox to store your music files, you just have to use the same username with your new laptop, install dropbox, and then the directory of your music files should be automatically the same, right? So in this case you wouldn't have to copy the music files manually and you also wouldn't have to relocate the files?!

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 6 lety

      "move database" was too obvious to make a movie about ;-)
      dropbox: In theory yes. But indeed you have to be really carefull that all the paths are the same ...
      But I had some dropbox problems with duplicate files and such and dropbox automatically renames files with duplicates. You have the same problem that Rekordbox can't find your files.
      And Dropbox is taking up so much resources of your computer with a lot of files. Every clocktick you need for Rekordbox, because it can be resource intensive too.
      By chance I just finished shooting a tutorial about another way of moving music files in Rekordbox

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 6 lety

      But seriously about the "move database": it only moves the REKORDBOX DATABASE itself in stead of the music files.
      Try it, you will see :-)

    • @travisbickle9745
      @travisbickle9745 Před 6 lety

      hmm so in the end it doesn't matter if you use "move database" or the "backup option" because with the backup option you can do it also without the music files?! then it would also just backup the database.
      ok, I don't know if I should try to import the music files via dropbox to my new computer or do it manually via a external hard drive to avoid any complications...

    • @DexxterClarkMusic
      @DexxterClarkMusic  Před 6 lety

      The difference is that "move database" points also to another location where the database is stored. That is not the case with "backup database".
      But I get your way of thinking ...
      External hard drives is also a pain in the *ss.
      Copy the entire database and the entire directory every time on your external hard disk and overwrite everything on the second computer.
      Not a beautiful solution. But its a solution ;-)
      If you are a handy with applescript/automator you can probably make it a lot easier just by executing a script. ( i know it's possible, but never worked with applescript)

    • @travisbickle9745
      @travisbickle9745 Před 6 lety

      I asked Pioneer and they said "backup library" only works if you wanna restore it on the same computer, it does not work on another computer. So if you wanna move your whole database you gotta use "move database" DAAAAH ;D

  • @reemeruxd
    @reemeruxd Před 4 lety

    I dont understand why its so hard for rekordbox to just let you collect all and backup all the info/music on an external hard drive then just plug that hard drive into your new computer and restore from there? all this having to preserve the file name destinations is ridiculous
