A high school phenom who spent just one year at Georgia Tech, Marbury was selected fourth by the Minnesota Timberwolves in the 1996 NBA draft. After 13 seasons and two All-Star appearances in the NBA, Marbury left for China, where he won three CBA championships and is so beloved that he has his own museum and statue.

MJ=Lebron
Oh this da crazy guy who constantly hates lebron for no reason 🤦🏾♂️
continue this kind of series instead of goat debates..this is way better
Do this for the ‘03 draft class. You have the four stars plus korver, Perkins, maybe mo Williams
my favorite player ever
I’m glad that he was able to redeem himself in China. Marbury was extremely talented, but everything is about the right fit.
@M C i agree. but he was able to overcome the memes of him, which were extremely fucked up to begin with. he shouldnt have been ridiculed, but unfortunately he was, and he had to reinvent himself to move past that
@M C agreed, he's personally my favorite player all around, as an individual and on court
M C Yes he did ‘nothing’ wrong but you would have to agree that his brand of basketball is loser basketball. That is to say he got his counting stats but he got them inefficiently and therefore contributed to losing. And of course there’s that crazy thing. Wish Starbury and you the best.
M C nice! Thank you and gl
@@johnofmalta so you're just here to be a douche that adds nothing to the conversation? marbury is #17 on the all time scoring list for point guards, with less games played than a lot of others. he averaged 19 and 7 for his career. if you dont understand what that means, or how deadly he would be in todays league with a more guard oriented focus, then you just dont know very much about basketball
so happy Marbury got his redemption. He's really an underrated star, he killed people in the league and def did it his way. Makes me proud to be from Brooklyn.
Literally was a losing player his whole career. All empty stats
@@ctwwtc8761 people around him were garbage
Very underrated
@@ctwwtc8761 everybody was losers except bulls, lakers, and San Antonio!
Funny how ESPN is talking him up but they the same ones that orovuded the platform for TV host to tear him down...smh
You know why
Think ........ supremacy
I came here for this message, they pushed the bashing of him rather than understanding him.
'96 is truly the best draft class....you see all these bangers??
They forgot undrafted Ben Wallce, Antoine Walker, Oneal and Big Z
@@TNMUSlC facts💯💯
I see all that trash
@@TNMUSlC And Peja Stojaković
Bro 94-97 drafted the best all stars we ever seen in that era, so much talent came out those draft classes!
Marbury wasn't "Misunderstood" he was under appreciated 💯
One of the the most underrated players ever 🏀 🔥
@@henrysmart6854 you are not living up to your last name
@@yvnggoat4739 He’s overrated. He’s gets talked about more than Jason Kidd or Tony Parker when he’s not better than either. Cause he played for the Knicks and went crazy in China
@@yvnggoat4739 Everybody has their opinion so.. nobody is wrong. But I do agree with you 😂
Steph is a HOF'er my book. Loved his game, and love his story. NY point guard through it all. Lead the way Starbury.
Just for his contribution to spreading the game of basketball in China and becoming a legend there, he deserves to be a HOFer.
The Basketball HOF is not just about NBA accomplishments. Many players who helped spread the game overseas have become HOFers. IMHO, Marbury deserves to be one as well.
Watched the documentary on this man. What it showed and confirmed to me was you don't have to win an NBA championship to be a legend.
Great player and a great man
Lived in Beijing for 10 yeas, Marbury is THE MAN in Beijing, absolutely beloved over there.
Why do people like D Rose in China?
China's GOAT 🐐. I'm happy Marbury found his peace there. He's a good dude. He was just misunderstood like Sega, Sony PS Vita, and LG phones. The LG G5 was too ahead of its time.
LOL interesting comment. I like your perspective.
Sega4Life
The comparison to technology goods lol

Had Stephon Marbury stayed and played with Kevin Garnett In Minnesota, he would’ve been a perennial all star and would have some playoff success and with the numbers both points and assist that he was averaging he would’ve been a NBA hall of famer without a doubt
Yeah, he and kg should've worked that out. That's just being young and not seeing the bigger picture.
They were suppose to be the next Stockton and Malone
@@kennymos9007 didn't give it enough time with he and kg. They could've built around them.
@@chrisisslick Minnesota never competes.
@@kennymos9007 did you just delete your previous comment? That was their chance to compete many years ago...all this is neither here nor there now anyway.
Marbury was one my favorate players to watch growing up in the 90s & 00s.
I remember my parents were only able to afford starburys for me when I was like in first and second and third grade, during the prime of the brand and I still remember going into the store and just thinking as a kid how cool everything was and still remember the smell of the sneakers, man is a great guy with a good heart and was truly talented, yet went under the radar...shame, but things all worked out in the end. Love to see it.
I used to work at Steve and Barry's. We could never keep the Starbury shoes in stock lol. People would swarm is wherever we brought out a new shipment lol. Good times.
I had a one of the peacock jackets from there
@@SLSMe bro the shoes were dookie lol but for 15$ you couldn't complain lol
At that price point, you didn't need to steal. Just skip 3 burger meals and you can afford a pair. He had a vision and wanted everyone to have a pair. YOu compare this to Kanye and Yeeyz... no comparison.
@@benjovic7498 I totally respect his vision. It's a shame the company went under.
@@NoName-cn3cp The shoes appreciated and still sells for 30USD on ebay today. XD
I was fortunate to have seen Stephon Marbury in high school and he was so great. Along with Kyrie, he's the best HS guard I ever saw.
He had one of the best Netflix documentary ever
Ever!
Then I really need to watch it.
best ever for real....his littlie cousin Sebastian Telfair had the second best ever. going to high school to the pros. two cousins with the best ever documentaries.
What was the documentary?
@@Mike-bt3ki A Kid from Coney Island
I used to buy his $15 Sneakers. My mom would never would have bought any basketball shoes over $80+ at the time
And the shorts folks
Starbury
Steve and Barry’s was lit back then
I sometimes bought expensive shoes, but I bought his shoes and clothing and wore them just because I thought it was so cool what he was doing.
Marbury could've earned millions just signing with any shoe company. Instead, he used his name, time, and energy to promote shoes for a social cause.
Living proof that anything is possible even when you're at your lowest point when you fully put your mind into it. Mad props to trying to make a positive difference in society. This man has heart!
Definitely underated and an inspiration to this New York City kid.
Bryant. Iverson. Nash. Allen. Marbury. Marion. It made a cultural impact thanks to Iverson. I think the doc just wanted to talk Kobe. Expect more docs about him in the next few years.
Yeah I can see your view on that but ai already had a 30 for 30 on him and tons of other docs I think( no disrespect ) Kobe achieved in death what ai already had in life
Marion wrong draft class buddy 99
I love this lil series on the 96 draft we need this on the 03 and Jordan draft too!
Dope. He’s definitely a Hall of Famer.
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR MAKING THIS! MY FAVORITE PLAYER EVER
This guy was a phenomenal ball player. Happy to hear he is doing well.
One of my favorite PG. Unfortunately, I feel that he was in an era where combo guards were criticized.
Bomani you kiillin' it with this series. Thanks for reminding us of the past and present greats!
That's pretty cool he was able to go overseas and have success in China. He has a statue in Shanghai
I was just watching your old Bomani and Jones videos. You do a great job Bomani. Keep up the great work.
Me, spend my first 22 years in Beijing, China. Seeing Marbury is the city hero. No one watch Basketball before he came. The people of Beijing truly love him. And he love Beijing too. Love is love.
I read this in an Asian accent
@@peavy951 the truth is I am an Asian
“No one watch Basketball before he came”? Come on, I think that should have been “No one like you watched basketball before he came”
One of my favorite players ever!
i'm loving these basketball bits
This series is🔥👌
these short min docs on ppl are great
I remember when Isiah took over the Knicks front office and made the Marbury trade it was very big at the time for those who remember, and I remember his cousin being sebastian Telfair lmao and him being on the cover of street hoops during that time frame and the last playing in the NBA on my Celtics in 2009 who would have won the title if Kevin garnett was healthy if you ask me imo but crazy career
Yo I love these 96 NBA Draft videos
Great video, he did It his way, can't be mad at the brother
Legendary 👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾
Love Steph! NYC legend
Who else been waiting for this one the most😁😁
Love this
Quickest first step i've ever seen
such an underappreciated star player, Marbury was box office
This series is happening because NBA TV has a documentary on 1996. I still think 1984 is better. I think 1984 is like 1994 with movies. While 1996 is like 2019 movies. Deeper.
This series was made and released before NBA TV's doc.
Man I still remember the smile on my moms when I wanted some marburys
these shorts been dope
And this is why he deserves to be in the HOF
Loved Starbury he might've been the strongest 6' guard going to the hole I've seen. He would go in the paint at will take contact from whoever & still finish
Marbury is a NYC B-Ball Legend 💯
The living legend
Marbury a hall of famer fasho since its basketball and not just NBA
Every man has a place in this world
Good job
Marbury peers Yao Ming in popularity here in China. Local people even built a MUSEUM for him in BJ.
He is the first foreign player who earned a permanant residance for China, the most hard-to-get one in the world.
He is a big name with success and expected to coach Team China.
Starbury is OG triple OG
best ever for real....his littlie cousin Sebastian Telfair had the second best ever. going to high school to the pros. two cousins with the best ever documentaries.
Respect to Marbury
Jason Kidd replaced him then Steve Nash replaced him both levels above
Top 3 favorite player ever
He was actually the first player I loved from this draft. I got so many rookie cards. Lol I put my stocks on him. 🤨 But man he was good.
Can we please get more Bomani Jones?
My first favorite player before I became a Kobe fan
His Netflix documentary is 🔥
I need a full length bomani jones narrated documentary series not jus youtube shorts or a full 30 for 30. Excellent storyteller
One of the coldest
Starbury was one of the best dunking PG's ever...
Marbury is a legend to NYC people like myself.
What went wrong with Sebastian Telfair? I remember reading Slam Magazine in Junior High and he was an even bigger prospect than LeBron at the time
@@game_theory2547 Telfair went on the wrong route & I believe is still incarcerated. Very unfortunate.
The Starbury!!!!
Too late ESPN, a documentary on Netflix called A Kid From Coney Island already told this story a couple years back
4:26 That Dunk 👀🤯
I remember his head was almost at the same level of the rim. What amazing athletisim
⭐️🗽
Bomani Jones killed this
As a diehard Heels fan in the 90's, there were two players in the ACC who made me nervous: Steve Francis and Stephon Marbury.
ESPN should also do more videos about the rest of the guys in the 96 draft, apart from these few legends, you also have:
Marcus Camby
Antoine Walker
Shareef Abdur-Rahim
Peja Stojakovic
Jermaine ONeal
Žydrūnas Ilgauskas
Derek Fisher
and the undrafted Ben Wallance
Not gonna lie as a Celtics fan I loved when he came to Boston.
sorry if i been sleepin on him but first time hearing Bomani Jones narrate something and I'd enjoy more
he also had a good series here on the best teams Jordan beat
Early in his career, I thought he was arrogant. He called himself the "best PG in the NBA" though his teams weren't the best, and I thought many others were better than him like Jason Kidd.
But after I found out about his Starbury line of affordable shoes and all the charity work he does (like he would pay for poor kids in New York to get haircuts), he became my hero. The psychological breakdown and then his comeback in China just made his story even more heroic to me.
Players like him and steve franchise, if they had been a little smarter with their career and body probably could've easily played a lot longer in the NBA.
part of me wants to say "I wish he stayed with Minnesota and KG" but then I remember that things probably worked out better for him this way
I did not watch this and may not because as a New Yorker and Knicks fan I know it better than most. I don't expect ESPN to tell the truth, but it needs to be said that Steph's return to the Mecca should have been a triumphant family story as the son who finally became a star after all of his brothers had failed. Starbury not only failed to write that story, but it was not because he couldn't get 20 and 10 in his sleep, but whatever mistakes he made were made worse by Larry Brown, and Larry Brown turning on him and Isiah Thomas. Add the horrible and unfair Media NYC is famous for always looking to crucify our pros and what should have been a celebration was turned into a nightmare for him and us fans. It should also be known that Mike Dantoni stabbed him in the back and refused to play him that last year even though he did everything asked of him that last year, and was the team's best PG by far. Thank God for the hero-worship in China that may have saved his life. That's how bad things had gotten for him in NY.
Marbury made the all star team 2001 2002 and 2003... him and iverson brought the East back in 2001
Yet the east still sucked then.
@@kennymos9007 yes they did but he as an individual was never suck now his ability to make the team
Better was always in question Jason Kidd came and took the same team he couldn’t win 40 games with to the nba finals
@@pedrogates3189 well it was easy to get to the finals then, and Kidd was a very productive guard... Marbury was more like a superstar of a player.... And he proved it.
@@kennymos9007 What weed you on ? Lol Kidd was the superstar are you kidding me ? He took the same team to the final marbury couldn’t even get to the playoffs literally the only different was the player swap of the two you must don’t know about the young Jason Kidd from a all around stand point it was a upgrade marbury maybe was a better scorer but that’s it he did nothing else better
@@pedrogates3189 you're saying exactly what I just said.
he always remind me of new jack
Are they doing the whole 96 draft?
Should have had a part on his famous rivalry with the shark knight himself, the wonton don.

STARBURY !!!
We need to call these pieces "Bomani Joints"
Man sht i was so happy you find yourself in china. Good luck to you man
