Ray Allen’s 3-point shooting ushered in a new NBA era - and made him a legend | The Class of ’96

  • On this episode of The Class of ’96, Bomani Jones looks at the life and career of Ray Allen. After being selected as the fifth overall pick in the 1996 NBA draft, Allen made more 3-pointers in his career than any player in NBA history, including perhaps the biggest shot in the history of the league. But even while he was helping to set the stage for the 3-point surge of the modern NBA, he was also a dangerous slasher and penetrator - and a Spike Lee collaborator.

    What's amazing about Ray Allen was that he played in an era before analytics and part of his career (Milwaukee) was played with a bit of hand-checking in the NBA. If he played under today's NBA's rules during his time, he'd have a much easier time driving to the lane (people forget that Ray was good at driving to the basket especially during his Milwaukee days) and going through screens. He'd probably also opt for more corner 3s and 3s in general, less long-range 2s, and so his shooting averages and PPG average would increase for sure.
    I'm not saying today's game was the way to play. I'm only saying that Ray's scoring and shooting would be very comparable or even superior to today's best scorers.

    "...as if Ray Allen was going to give someone else a chance to do the thing that he did better than anyone else ever!"
    All the while LeBron was calling for the ball at the top of the key for a 2nd chance after just missing the 3 that Bosh was rebounding. LOL Great Take Bomani!!

  • @blovett0814
    @blovett0814 Před 3 lety

    That game tying 3 in Game 6 is the greatest clutch shot for these reasons (no particular order):
    1) Heat down 3-2 and down by double digits entering the 4th quarter
    2) LeBron going off for 16 points in the 4th quarter and his 2 critical turnovers ALONG with the 3 prior to Allen's shot
    3) The yellow ropes were out ready for the Spurs celebration
    4) Mike Breen's forever legendary call
    5) This is probably the most important one: He practiced that shot in the moment for his entire career (look it up)
    Final note: Yes, Ray Allen did save LeBron's legacy because of this shot but that doesn't take away from what LeBron did despite his turnovers down the stretch and the missed shot. Allen deserves all the credit in the world for this shot, which is still my favorite NBA play ever, but LeBron had a triple double in this game and in the overtime period. Allen did save LeBron's legacy but mainly because of the scrutiny if the Heat didn't win this game. Steph may be the greatest shooter ever, but Ray Allen is STILL the clutches shooter ever!
